Start with Book of Souls as we'll be rushing Book of Thoth to begin stacking the item as soon as possible.
Why no starter item? By not starting with a starting item allows you to pick and choose any start upgrade you might need in the late game. The reason behind this once you choose a starter like Conduit Gem you are stuck with only two options so if you need a defensive starter like Sentinel's Embrace, you'll be unable to pick up the item.
The Current Meta Build provides a decently high amount of power, 20% cool-down reduction, and utility through Rod of Tahuti and Sentinel's Embrace.
The max order is as follows, prioritize maxing Love Birds by level 9 for maximum wave clear, damage, and healing, followed by Back Off! for damage and cc, Kiss for the movement speed, stun, and jealousy damage, and Undying Love for the immunity.
As of the current map, taking Kiss at level 2 instead of Back Off! is optimal as both junglers show up at mid by then, being able to provide sustain and possible damage increase in a potential 2v2 is far superior. A niche situation is taking Love Birds at level 5 instead of Undying Love, but the safety of the ultimate is generally a better option.
When choosing to start putting levels in Undying Love depends on personal playstyle/preference. You can either choose to start maxing it after Back Off! or after Kiss. I personally prefer to begin putting levels into it after Back Off! as protecting your hyper carry in the late game becomes crucial and having a longer invulnerability duration can make or break the outcome.
Purification Beads and Aegis Amulet are very standard relics in the mid lane.
Magic Shell is very niche being good into double hunter comps, etc.
On your first back of 1150 gold, you'll finish Book of Thoth. It's important to finish this item soon as possible and getting it stacked will benefit Aphrodite quite nicely. The item provides a high amount of power and mana making it a great option to make up for the loss of power by building Sentinel's Embrace.
Shoes of Focus are the best boots for Aphrodite as it provides a good amount of mana, power and most importantly cool-down reduction to which the Goddess of Love, adores.
Spear of Desolation is currently being raved as the best item in the game due to its passive effecting both basic abilities and ultimate cool-down which makes the item very versatile.
The addition of 10% magical penetration on Rod of Tahuti makes it always a great pick up considering the high damage it brings. On top of that, the passive works on Love Birds' healing on both yourself and your Soulmate.
Sentinel's Embrace is currently underrated in normal smite play, however, it's quickly picking up a storm in high elo and among pro players such as Venenu. The item is incredibly stat efficient making it the best defensive item in-game, especially as you'll be splitting 50/50 resistances with your hunter.
Obsidian Shard is very cheap and provides 20% magical pen base and 10% extra on your first ability every 10 seconds, making the item great against tanks in the late game.
Super late game, you'll purchase an Elixir of Speed and sell your Boots.
Magi's Cloak is very cheap and a good last item pickup against crucial CC to save Undying Love or Purification Beads is on cool-down.
Soul Gem is a very cost-efficient last item to provide power, survivability, and cool-down reduction. Chose this if you don't need Magi's Cloak or simply want to replace the CDR loss.
Purchase an Ward whenever you back as Vision is key for protecting yourself and your allies. Sentry Ward is great for gaining control and denying vision in key areas such as objectives like Fire Giant.
Potion of Power is purchased when you don't have anything else to buy or the game is closing out. Exlixir of Speed is purchased when you'll want to sell you Shoes of the Magi for another item.

The general rule of thumb is that every game will be different so you won't always go for the same build path. In the section below, you'll find the build paths for different situations. Remember that there are times that you can't afford your items and that's completely okay.

I think I agree with BD's build assessment, but I only have concept on that, not actual use.
I don't think it's worth a point skip at level 8/9 to put a 2nd point into the ult. That means nothing at level 8, with max Birds at 9 + 1 ult giving an extra 0.3s. Really think it's going to be of more use to put a 2nd point into Back Off! at 8 for the extra damage and finish Birds at 9. And while I see the obvious benefit of a (slightly) longer ult duration, in most cases I would expect you'd continue to get more overall use by maxing the 2 before putting more points in the ult, especially when your relic choices are the standard Beads + Aegis.
In your skill leveling sequence in the body of the guide, if you do really insist on point skipping, I think with your custom grid you can actually show this, rather than defaulting to what it shows through the build creator.
Although you have it (way down) in the body of your guide, I think a more immediate mention of Divine Ruin as a situational add - whether in the notes or in a separate category of items at the top - is important. I didn't read every single thing at the top, but I didn't see mention of it (likely as a situational alternative to Spear of Desolation).
I think it would be good to note that Back Off!, due to the knockback, can disrupt a teammate's combos/damage, and or push the enemy away from your team, so it's important to be mindful of the effect in a given situation.
Overall, obviously a very nice job, and you show good knowledge with your descriptions.
While I can agree that mentioning Divine Ruin as a situational item, it wouldn't replace Spear of Desolation in the current meta as the item is extremely strong. If I was to opt for Divine Ruin it would be swapped with Chronos' Pendant or in the Chronos' Pendant build (All Viable Builds section) as it would make up for the loss of CDR from Deso.
It's mentioned in the Abilities section that Back Off! knockback (that resonates from Aphrodite) can disrupt/cancel a teammate's damage even providing an example.
Also your return to table of contents button isn't working :P
Thanks for letting me know in regards to the Table of Contents button. It has been fixed.
I choose to mention the upcoming update to offer solely my opinions on Archmage's Gem.
You could even consider Pendulum of Ages, meaning you don't need to waste an item spot on Chronos' Pendant just for extra CDR and can get a more useful item.
