Smite Item: Obsidian Shard

Is it true this passive gets procced on minions and such? Because that would be real ****ty when phoenix sieging / defending.

Even on mages where Magus is core early game (unless you're stacking book of thoth and looking for a pure lategame build), you still usually want to pick up Obsidian on these mages lategame when you're facing against those tanky solos and supports, (as well as any possible tanky junglers, building blackthorn, mantle of discord and such), it's just too good lategame with Soul Reaver and E-Staff (E-Staff not affected by Obs Shard, but thats not the point) procs. Besides, in the very lategame you don't really need magus to delete squishies, so you want to try and get as high tank damage as possible so the enemy frontline can't steamroll your team. Besides Magus has to be stacked to get usefulness, and in lategame teamfights you don't want to rely on magus stacking on your first ability that hits because you're losing out on a lot of damage output.

In some cases, you could even sell magus lategame for another item once you have obs shard, outside of maybe Anubis (depends on what the rest of the build looks like).

buying other Mpen items is possible as long as they only give magic pen and not protection removal

because obsiadian with Shoes of the Magi penetrates 20+10 protections

however when you have a item that removes protections the obsidian shard penetrates less as there is less protections

so with Spear of the Magus at full stacks (disregarding the 10% atm) gives makes that the opponent has 40 protections then obsidion only gives 13 pen (same interaction between Titan's Bane and The Executioner for physical)

This lets you bypass 33% of an enemy's magical protections, it is not reliant on any other items to work. Eg: if an enemy has 60 magical protections, this item will allow you to bypass 20 of them.

Here's a question, do you have to have M-Pen from another item to make the 33% boost work?

so in other words: would buying this item without any other M-Pen items defeat the purpose?

What is meant by penetration? Direct damage? Physical Penetration -> Basic Attack and Magic Penetration -> Abilities Attack?
