Dude, There's Already Like 712 Fenrir Guides

Exaggeration aside, yeah, the Fenrir thing has kind of been covered. Has it though? Try mine, see what you think. Also, none of the popular Fenrir guides on here are updated to cover the new and patched items! Two words: NEW. QINS. And Asi? ***** please.

Anywho, I'm happy to answer your questions and update frequently based on new god additions, patches, etc. This is also a fairly open-ended guide - I understand that not everyone plays a god the same way I do, and every game/enemy team comp is different. If you use the exact same build in every game, you're probably doing something wrong (unless you're new and are learning to build situationally).

If you are looking for the end all, be all, IfYouAreUsingthisGuideYouWillWin definitive guide, it doesn't exist. There are a lot of really great physical items with unique passives, as well as some items that are not magically or physically designated... so it's my job, and your job, to weigh the pros and cons and try to figure out what's going to work best for your particular Fenrir playstyle. This guide was created to give you options and insight.

Guide to My Guide/Thank You

This is meant as a complete Fenrir guide. I'm hoping to leave no stone unturned so it's wordy and in-depth. In real life, I write journalistically and creatively, so it's hard for me to turn that off.

I tried to separate the sections for easy navigating (each ability has their own section instead of being lumped in a giant mess, etc.) so by no means do I expect anyone to read all or even most of it. It's more reference material, like the 500 page textbook that you only consult occasionally.

I also recommend using CTRL F to navigate quickly. If you want to know what I think about Fatalis, or how to counter He Bo, just hit CTRL F, then type in "Fatalis" when the search bar pops up.

This *NOT* me trying to convince you that my build is the best. This is me going over items and weighing the benefits, downfalls, passives, etc. so you can create your own build, with my guidance, that fits your playstyle. Besides, where's the fun in saying "Oh, yeah, that match I was using KBop a doo's Fenrir build"? Let's make one more suited for you. :)

I don't claim to be a professional. I'm not going to run too much math here, or crack any coding. I play for fun and I know most of you do too. I do play Fenrir often, I enjoy playing him, and I generally do well. I hope you will too.

Thank you very much for reading, voting, commenting and being active in the Fenrir or overall Smite discussion. Don't hesitate to let me know if you see any way to improve the guide! All feedback is welcome.

Lore

Fenrir's cool. He bit off Tyr's hand.

Passive: Unbound Runes

Passive: Unbound Runes

A fun, easy to use passive with some nice effects on your moves. will turn Mr. Fenrir into something he isn't. You want crowd control? He'll stun. AOE damage? Right here. Massive power increases? Got it covered. Doubled protections during his ult? I wish every god had that.

is activated by landing basic hits. Note that this doesn't have to be on a god... buff camps, minions or furies will work just fine. If you kill another god, you automatically get max runes, which is 5. Using an ability with full runes grants you an additional effect:

Unchained - Stun any gods hit.
Seething Howl - Buff is increased by 50%.
Brutalize - Deal 75% damage to any enemies in the area.
Ragnarok - Protections doubled.

Ability #1: Unchained

Keybind #1: Unchained

Ability #2: Seething Howl

Keybind #2: Seething Howl

Ability #3: Brutalize

Brutalize

Ability: Single Target
Affects: Enemy
Damage: Physical
Damage: 45/75/105/135/165 (+50% of your physical power)
Cost: 70/75/80/85/90
Cooldown: 14s

Brutalize is Fenrir's bread and butter. This is your heavy hitter, your closer, your whatever... most of your kills will come from this until your basic attacks start critting so hard you forget about it because your opponent is dead before you even think to hit 3.

Brutalize is nice because once you're locked onto someone, it guarantees you 4 powerful hits on them (keep in mind there are lots of exceptions. Hun Batz's crowd control will displace you. Freya can ult out, enemies can Combat Blink out of this, etc). I'm not saying that this isn't still a good attack (because this is a great attack!), but you won't always get those 4 hits.

As I mentioned, #3 LOCKS on. The locking on capability of Brutalize is what made Fenrir so attractive to me in the first place (well, aside from dat sex appeal). Rarely do kills get away - if you obviously have the upper hand, you can close the distance between you and an escaping enemy with Unchained and hopefully be close enough to lock on with Brutalize. At which point you should yell your signature catchphrase, which for me is "Going somewhere?"

And once again:

***YES, YOU CAN COMBO Seething Howl AND Brutalize TOGETHER! Pop your 2 and then 3 to power up Brutalize.

IF YOU USE THIS ABILITY WHEN YOU HAVE FULL RUNES...
  • Each strike deals 75% damage to nearby enemies.

Oh my god, so great. You know the passive on Golden Bow? Similar! But this hits for 75% instead of 50%, which is massive. Sometimes I get so preoccupied in a fight that I don't realize my Brutalize just wrecked like 3 people. Not only that, I don't think everyone is aware of this little trick. They're not going to make huge efforts to run away from you while you're locked onto the guy next to them, so you can pick up some kills in a teamfight for yourself, or at least assist somebody else's.

I also use the splash damage on a full runes Brutalize to help with buff camps in the early stages of the game. Target the ground on the big guy (it really won't let you lock onto him like you can with a god) and you'll hit the two smaller buff dudes as well.

Ability #4: Ragnarok (Ultimate)

Ragnarok

Ability: Single Target
Affects: Enemy
Damage: Physical Damage: 150/225/300/375/450 (120% of your physical power)
Movement Speed: 50%
Carry Duration: 2s
Cost: 100
Cooldown: 90s

Ragnarok. A lot of gods' ults are their heavy damage-dealers, their killing stroke. You don't need Ragnarok to kill someone, especially once you're fed. What your ult does is help with positioning, initiating, etc.

#4 is versatile. Here are some ways I frequently give a swift Ragnarok to the face:
  • Pull enemies onto friendly towers as often as you can, especially in early game when you may not be able to get the kill without some damage assist from the tower.
  • Pull an enemy OFF a tower once you are tanky/leveled enough (gank from behind, run them off the tower and toward your teammates - it will only get a few hits on you. Depending on your lifesteal/what level you are, you'll easily gain this back). This is my favorite thing to do, because they think they're safe. :) Adorable.
  • Singling out a squishy (sup He Bo, Poseidon, Anubis, *insert every mage or carry here*) See the opposing gods section, some squishies can be scary to your Fenrirliness however.
  • Dragging an enemy out of the jungle and into a lane (so you can get some help from a teammate).
  • You can use Ragnarok as an escape. Absolute last resort though, nobody likes wasting their ult on escaping, that's always depressing.

There are others uses that I didn't cover I'm sure.

Keep in mind, if you hit anyone resisting crowd control, this will end your ult. Examples include anyone in the process of using Aegis Amulet, gods in the process of doing an ult that they're immune to to crowd control during (like Ymir's Shards of Ice), etc. You'll still deal damage upon contact (not with Aegis of course) but you'll shrink back to normal size and speed, and there will be no carry effect. This is why ganking and the element of surprise are your friend. Your ultie will also end if you kill an enemy on impact (happens occasionally, this does start hitting pretty hard late game).

IF YOU USE THIS ABILITY WHEN YOU HAVE FULL RUNES...
  • Your protections double.

Yes please. You can still be hit or killed during Ragnarok.

Starting Items: Bumba's Mask or Death's Toll?

Bumba's Mask OR Death's Toll?

I really, really, really don't recommend going out into the jungle without Bumba's Mask. You're going to get killed on mana without its passive (+15 MP5). Bumba's makes it so you don't need to worry about mana potions as much, and can stock up on health, but, again, it's all in your playstyle. My starting build for a jungling Fenrir is usually:

You really want to maximize sustain so you don't fall behind.

Getting Death's Toll, Tabi and one of each potion is a pretty standard starting build, much like building Vampiric Shroud and shoes as a mage. Death's Toll will give you some health and mana regen upon basic hits. You shouldn't be getting hurt too much if you're staying in line with your minions, and avoiding getting too close to any enemy gods. STAY AWAY FROM ARCHERS! They hurt. Owwww. Make sure enemy minions have spotted your minions before you start attacking them, or they will target you.

Actives to Consider

Whenever you have the cash, you should consider upgrading that Hand of the Gods.

Try to get eye of providenceEye of Providence as soon as possible too. Keep up with your warding so you can be aware of ganks before they happen (not when your team is mashing VHH! VHH!) and catch enemies unawares when they're distracted by a buff camp. Especially if you're playing public matches with randoms, some people are really, really bad about warding. Set a good example and cover your own ***.

Before you get your lifesteal going, keep a good supply of health and mana potions on you. I always keep a few of each on me anyway as the game goes on.

Early Game Items - New Qin's!

Qin's Sais and Warrior Tabi

I don't know who Qin is, but his sais are ****ing awesome (added in a recent patch). Now that I think about it, I don't know what sais are either, but this is unimportant. Why do I like to build a rank of Qin's before my Tabi? I like the little bit of lifesteal, and you get the same amount of physical power as the first rank of Tabi. Weigh the pros and cons: Tabi will give you increased attack speed with the first rank vs. Qin's lifesteal. Then do your thang, gurl.

I'm not going to lie, it can be a ******* nightmare playing Fenrir until you get your attack speed going. Especially for me, it's rough playing him at the beginning of a match, because chances are I'm just coming off a game where I was a fully upgraded, scary Fen, so going back to that starting attack speed is awkward at first. He is much more fun to play once you have decent lifesteal and attack speed. Jungling will be so, so much easier too.

EXPLANATION OF NEW QIN'S SAIS:

New Qin's rock! You build the first two ranks of regular Qin's Blades and then branch off to the right to buy Qin's Sais for the last rank. The passive is, "On basic attack hits, deal physical damage equal to 20 + 6% of the target's missing health. This only affects gods". So basically what this says is, you are going to HIT HARDER as the target gets weaker, which is probably OP and ridiculous considering you're already a sexy, hard-hitting assassin. So enjoy this before it is patched, okay? And when it is patched, use regular Qin's Blades anyway because those were already awesome.

So now you've got:

Or maybe:
If that setup isn't "your bag, baby", go ahead and continue and we'll find you something in the next section.

Mid-Game: More Pen? Protection? Power?

Mid-Game: More Penetration? Protection? Power?focused voidblade

Ah, pen, protection and power, the three P's (it's okay, I too was disappointed "poop" didn't make it into the three P's. Dry your tears). Or maybe you don't care about any of the above and want more lifesteal? Or more attack speed? This is where you're truly going to branch off and make your build your own.

Feel free to use my mid-game items in your late game, or vice versa. Or not at all!

I usually stop building lifesteal here (for the time being). You could take more lifesteal, but if you take more power and pen, you're hitting harder... therefore, more lifesteal potential without actually buying more lifesteal. Makes sense, yes?

Ascendence and Transcendence. God, it pains me to write that. It's spelled "ascendance". Just because "transcendence" ends in "-ence" doesn't mean "ascendance" does too. Damn you Hi-Rez. So. You understand the difference between these two items, yes? Ascendence will GIVE you the stacks over time, but take a smaller percentage of your mana as additional phys power than Transcendence, which will make you earn the stacks. I personally do not stack as Fenrir. Up to you though. If I did, I'd combine it with Jotunn's Wrath and Breastplate of Valor so you can spam your abilities. Which is slight overkill on cooldown since you max at 40%... but you'd gain 16.5 phys power if you were doing your own stacks... plus the phys protection...

Asi is a neat little recent addition, and can be a fun item or good fit depending on your situation. When fully built, it grants +15 penetration, +30% attack speed (insane) and +15% lifesteal. No power. You can try it for yourself, and having that attack speed is definitely fun, but you may find you're not hitting as hard as you would like (depending on the rest of your build).

The Executioner. Definitely a solid item, but I don't find myself using it very often. You really, really have to be a basic attack-minded player or the power bonus is the only thing benefiting you. If you're not going to make use of the passive, don't use it.

Fatalis... I'm not a huge fan, honestly. As you may know, Fatalis isn't designated physical or magical, so it DOES NOT grant any power, pen or even protection. So, again, you will be hitting faster, but not harder. I have used this on Fenrir before, and it's a pretty fun item for a fast-paced game. I do like being very quick (+10% movement speed and a nice passive). But I also to drop someone with 4 basic hits.

focused voidbladeFocused Voidblade. I end up with this 95% of the time. The other 5% I probably forgot to build it. Why do I love focused voidbladeVoidblade? Simple: phys pen, phys protection and phys power, all bundled into one. I find that at this point in the game, I do want a little bit of protection against the enemy jungler, or carries. But this is all situational - maybe the other team is 5 mages, and the phys protection is wasted on you. "Situational" is the name of the game!

Frostbound Hammer. Medium power boost. The passive (basic attacks reduce an enemy's speed by 25% for 2 seconds) is situational for me. Are you up against Chronos and Poseidon? Or poor, slow, escape-less Anubis? If you're having trouble keeping an enemy in your basic attack range, this will help.

Jotunn's Wrath. You can really work Jotunn's if you know what you're doing. I recommend this to players who aren't comfortable using basic attacks as their main damage dealer, so if you're more ability oriented, try this. Can't argue with +40 physical power, either.

Titan's Bane. Straightforward item, phys power and pen boost. Not a bad choice since it's cheap. If you grab it, I would recommend selling it for focused voidbladeFocused Voidblade (if you want the power and pen) or toward one of your other items if you find you still have it during late game.

Let's say I went with my usual focused voidbladeFocused Voidblade. So now I've got:

eye of providence focused voidblade

Chances are you have an eye of providenceEye of Providence by now, so I added that in too.

Late Game: The Part Where People Start Running When They See You

Late Game: The Part Where People Start Running When They See You

I love late game. If your game does last until late game... even if you had a bad start, once you have some items under your belt, you can usually make up for it anyway. There are so, so many good items, and sick combinations of items. I have trouble picking, because you really have a great selection available to you. Let's look at what you could build. Pick two, unless you took two mid game choices.

Bloodforge. Sick item. Seriously, if I had Facebook, I'd be rockin some type of Bloodforge fan club. +40 physical power for tier 3, and you get more lifesteal (20%). This item works for me because I like to dive in and start wailing on enemies with my basic attacks. Read the passive. Like Qin's, you will hit harder with each hit, and be regaining back health (through your lifesteal) to boot. Again, this is an item really tailored more toward basic attackers, so buy accordingly.

Deathbringer. I use this a lot as well. Typically, I get Malice and then follow it up with Deathbringer as a nice critting combo. The passive increases your critical strike damage by 50% (read: A LOT) so you do want to make sure you've got a high critical strike chance, so you can, you know, critical strike more often. Definitely I would recommend comboing this item with another crit item, and you do get the nice +50 physical power bonus.

eye of retaliationEye of Retaliation. Mage players... this is like Bancroft's Talon, a power boost for missing health. Typically you'll see this as the finishing item in a build. 12% lifesteal and +50 physical power, which, you may have noticed, is the max you will see on any item (stacking items like Heartseeker excluded).

Golden Bow. A fun, situational item. More of a late game item since you want all your enemies in a group (for the passive - basic attacks hit enemies in a 15 ft radius for 50% of the damage), and there usually aren't big, 5 on 5 teamfights in early game. A nice addition to any Arena (AKA orgy mode) build.

Hydra's Lament. Check the passive. Got it? Works pretty well because after using Brutalize, you'll notice you always get at least one basic swipe at your target before they can (if they can) escape. Only occurs once every 2 seconds (still pretty generous) so wait the 2 seconds if you're using back to back abilities. I do caution about mana though. Anything granting cooldown reduction is tempting you to use abilities more often, and this item doesn't offer you any extra mana or MP5.

Malice/ Rage. Malice is the new variant of Rage (branches off to the right once you're at the top tier). It's slightly more expensive (2755 vs. 2650) and ditches the passive in favor of 5 extra phys power (25 vs. 20) and more crit chance (40% vs. 30%). You get +9% attack speed with either pick. Solid item, not sure what future patching holds for it. If you are comboing it with another item like Deathbringer, you may want to go Malice. But if you're not comboing it, Rage will increase your crit chance each time you DON'T crit, so that may work better for you. Malice + Deathbringer = 60% crit chance, plus the bonus 50% critical strike damage passive = slaughter.

Since I'm going by my sample build, here's what I've got now:

eye of providence focused voidblade

I kept it there for consistency purposes, but most likely you've sold Bumba's Mask by this point, and have upgraded HOG. I like Fist of the Gods, for the stun. Late game you can easily solo Gold Fury, and if someone else on your team has rank 3 HOG (automatically kills Fire Giant/Gold Fury at or below 25% health) there's no reason for you to have it too.
