Introduction

Who needs catnip when I have you!

Hiya, I'm puppeht (PC IGN - puhppeht), I'm a Smite lover and jungle main.

This guide is constantly a WIP. As the meta evolves, and I learn new things, it will be updated.
Bastet
Assassin
Goddess of Cats
Bastet is an assassin who is generally played in the jungle with ability/bruiser builds, although sometimes sees play in solo. Her kit features a tricky leap, a powerful damage over time swipe, a summonable cat, and an incredible grapple. And, she’s a cat-girl, so, that’s nice. Let’s make that win rate paw-sitive!

Abilities

Readers of the guide before this update will remember how I loathed the old Bastet for being useless. Her rework gave her this passive, which gives her scaling physical and ability lifesteal up to 15% on gods. It also reveals enemy gods for 6 seconds after hitting them. The passive is quite powerful with her incredible ability damage, and the reveal helps her chase enemies.
Pounce is Bastet's signature ability. It is a leap which deals damage, but can also be recasted to jump back to your previous position within 4 seconds of use. Bastet will also move faster after returning. It is not only a good escape, but a high damage ability with 100% scaling. Additionally, it is a good counter-chase tool, as if your opponent jumps over a wall to follow you, you can just jump back over. She will max this second instead of Ensnaring Claw because it helps significantly with damage output.
Razor Whip is Bastet's main jungle clear ability and damage option. It swipes left to right applying a bleed to enemies dealing damage over time for 3 seconds. This ability also has 100% total scaling. It’s important to use this first to get the damage over time started to kill the target quicker. It has a decent range, so she can sometimes hit a few targets with it.
Ensnaring Claw is a great CC tool which roots targets and spawns a cat which attacks enemies, slowing them and dealing damage. It has the lowest damage in her kit but sets up to chase targets or make them easier to hit. The cat also has 2 health, which can block 2 basic attacks, which can sometimes make the difference in a fight. The cat is a little dumb, and it can have strange launching behavior so keep in mind it isn’t always consistent.
[[Huntress of Bast]
Huntress of Bast is a projectile that travels forward, stunning the first enemy hit. Then, a big kitty will drag the target back to Bastet. Upon return, a sand vortex spawns which drags the target to the center, dealing damage. Bastet gains CC immunity while casting. Huntress of Bast is the bread and butter of Bastet gameplay. It’s a thin skill-shot that almost always guarantees a kill on a target without CC immunity. But, being a thin skill-shot, it’s not very easy to hit. It can engage a fight, dragging a target out of position setting up for a team kill. It’s also useful for catching targets running away, and ganking.
Combos
Bastet combos are fairly straightforward. Most fights start with Huntress of Bast grabbing a target and putting them in front of Bastet. Apply damage over time with Razor Whip, then root the target with Ensnaring Claw, and finally either finish off the kill or get out with Pounce. Alternatively, use Pounce to join a fight, and deal damage with Ensnaring Claw and Razor Whip, then confirm a kill on an escaping target with Huntress of Bast.
Level Order
-
-
-
-

Start with Razor Whip at level 1, then unlock Pounce at level 2, for the most damage, fastest clear, and escape if necessary. Unlock Ensnaring Claw at level 3, then begin to level and max Razor Whip. Level Huntress of Bast when available. Once Razor Whip is max level, level and max Pounce, and finally Ensnaring Claw.

Gameplay

Early-Game
Bastet’s early game is mostly focused on farming and targeting players without Purification Beads. Huntress of Bast will almost always guarantee a kill on a squishy target early on. Bastet is quite safe so stealing enemy jungle camps is a consideration.
Mid-Game
Bastet’s middle game is where she peaks; the damage on Razor Whip is deadly. She also tends to have some cooldown reduction at this point which enables constant Huntress of Bast uses, so she can often return to a target she just burned the Purification Beads of.
Late-Game
Bastet has great single-target engage with Huntress of Bast, good damage and movement for teamfights. Huntress of Bast can often swipe a target out of a phoenix to set up for a quick kill. Focus on diving the backline and using Pounce to escape when low.

Itemization

Starter Items
Bluestonne Pendant
While Bluestone Pendant got nerfed to reduce its use in the jungle, it's still very powerful for Bastet because all of her abilities proc it, and it bumps up her damage. The main issue with Bluestone Pendant is the lack of sustain, meaning she'll have to back more often. It's still the best starter for her right now.
Eye Of The Jungleis stronger than the jungle starters. Seer Of The Jungle is useful for vision control, and Protector Of The Jungle gives great stats for jungle fights. Bastet makes good use of Protector Of The Jungle because she can pull enemies into the jungle, but I prefer Seer Of The Jungle myself for vision control, especially in ranked and competitive games, but I would suggest Protector Of The Jungle mostly.
Core Options
Jotunn's Wrath is a core option which grants 20% cooldown reduction and mana immediately supplementing high frequency ganks through the early-mid-game. On top of that, it has 10 flat penetration boosting damage against squishy targets early, particularly before guardians can get Gauntlet of Thebes stacked. This makes Jotunn's Wrath considerably the best early-game assassin item. Jotunn’s Vigor boosts Bastet’s Nightstalker ability lifesteal while under 40% health.
The Crusher is a core item which grants power, attack speed, 10% pen and bonus ability damage. This item works well with high power builds, particularly with Transcendence. It's great against teams with protection auras like Sentinel's Embrace, Sovereignty, and Heartward Amulet. The item now takes a more late game approach since it scales off more power. Good with Heartseeker.
Heartseeker is a core item with power and pen, that deals percent health on abilities. It's a good choice against teams with lots of health, but goes in most builds in general. Formerly, it was almost always built last, but the item is pretty good in the 3rd, 4th, or 5th slots now.
Power Items
Transcendence is an option which stacks for large amounts of power, enabling a stronger mid-late-game as a trade-off for a weak early game. That does not mean its built late however, as it’s generally built in the 2nd item slot. That said, if combined with Jotunn's Wrath, Transcendence's weakness can be balanced out by Jotunn's Wrath's early power. Transcendence also carries the quality of life effect of never needing to back for mana, and never running out with the frequent use of abilities with high cooldown reduction. Bastet has great power scaling on her abilities which makes Transcendence a good pick for her. However, right now, Transcendence isn’t a very popular item in the jungle because of how quickly the jungle can snowball a game.
Soull Eater is another stacking item that provides ability lifesteal once stacked. It’s not very popular right now, but it does boost Nightstalker and give Bastet extra sustain.
Arondight is an offensive option which grants massive power and cooldown, as well as a strong buff which grants speed and damage after using the ult which synchronizes with and facilitates Infused Strikes. This option is great against squishier teams and more mobile teams. It works well with Bastet because it hits a single target and kills that target even quicker.
Brawler's Beat Stick is an offensive option which grants power and flat pen, and reduces the healing of enemies hit. It also creates a field that gives allies power. The deal with this item is that it has the weakest passive of the new anti-heal passives. However, it is still good for anti-heal itself. It's borderline necessary against teams with strong healing. While the loss of some stats compared to other items seems like it's a weaker item, you ultimately do more damage by reducing the amount of healing enemies get thus having to deal less damage total. It’s new passive isn’t wonderful but is a small bonus.
Titan's Bane is an offensive option which provides power and percent pen, and bonus pen on the first ability that hits every 10 seconds. This option is great against tankier teams. It's always built late as the opponents won’t have many protections early on. It fits very well on Bastet as she will nearly always start a fight with Huntress of Bast, and thus Titan's Bane can add 40% penetration to that powerful ultimate.
Serrated Edge and Titan's Bane are generally interchangable on most assassins. For the most part, its a personal preference type deal. Just like Titan's Bane, it's usually purchased later in the game when the enemy team has protections built up.
Bloodforge is a late-game item which provides power and movement speed, but also a great passive which helps Bastet survive once claiming a kill. It doesn't have any cooldown or penetration, so it's best to leave for last when the rest of your build is complete, generally after upgrading a starter. Helps with her survivability to live after dumping her kit in a teamfight.
Defensive Options
Magi's Cloak is a defensive option which gives defensive stats and an automatic crowd control cleanse and immunity on a 70-second cooldown. This item is great against teams with dangerous crowd control, particularly displacement like Pluck or other significant knock-ups. It's also good against mages or carries with self-peel like Morgan Le Fay's Dragonflight that lets you stay on a target. If you find that your beads are not coming up fast enough to survive engagements, this is a great choice at the end of a high power build. Since Pounce is usually countered by CC that stops Bastet from leaping back, a Magi’s Cloak can counter the counter. Woah.
Spirit Robe is a defensive option which gives protections, cooldown reduction and crowd control reduction. It's the easy, no-brain choice for a late-game defensive item to help against high damage comps.
Stone of Binding is a fun option because it reduces the targets protections after CC. So, drag a target to Bastet with Huntress of Bast and they will have their protections dropped for an easy kill. The item also procs on Ensnaring Claw. It also provides some protections for a bit of tankiness.

Hey puppeht,

Good start on this guide. A couple thoughts on what might be personal preference:
  • I don't know that I'd go straight into Transcendence. It's obviously very nice for the mana and power, but you're going to get fairly decent sustain from Bumba's Dagger, and early flat pen can help if and when you want to gank. I'd personally start with Mace, finish Warrior Tabi, then build into The Crusher or Brawler's Beat Stick (or perhaps even Jotunn's Wrath as a secondary option). I'd get Trans AFTER that.

  • Your writeup still states basically "don't build protection items" and in a general sense I can understand because her scaling is so nice that you want high power. That said, when your beads are down, you don't want to not be able to go in...or if you want to save beads...and that's where something like Magi's Cloak comes into play. I'm guessing you added Magi's after Gulf's comment, and that has always been a functional option for her...but now that doesn't align with your original writeup, with which I disagree. A slightly less powerful but alive Bastet is better than a high power but dead Bastet.

  • I don't fully agree with your skill leveling. I don't know that it's worth not leveling anything at 8 just to point skip and get your 2 maxed and your ult at rank 2 at level 9. I'd just put the 2nd point into your 1 at 8, and max the 2 at 9.
Overall, solid item choices and some decent explanations on items and gameplay.

Skipping at level 8 makes little to no difference and is just a preference thing. The understanding behind it is that if your next basic ability to level isn't that impactful, if you were to put a point into it then it would feel no different as if you were skipping an ability level, but you don't max your ult and primary ability til level 10. This grants that same feeling because you are skipping an ability but getting your ult and primary ability sooner.

Personally I only think it's useful on Scylla and Janus, but as I said the difference is minimal overall.

Hey Muffin, thanks for the feedback.

I'll try starting Mace in a few games later, I've always done the Transcendence start so that's what I went with. I like to get the stacks early so I'm a little bit stronger when it evolves. I think it helps stress how important Transcendence is.

I'll try to expand my explanation of the defensive items. We may just disagree in regard to the defensive items though. Apart from items like Magi's Cloak or to an extent Mantle of Discord, I wouldn't buy any defensive items. Your whole point on Bastet is to deal all your damage and jump out. You shouldn't be a target for the most part. Plus, while a dead Bastet is worse than a less powerful alive one, a dead enemy is even better. It's all theoretical and that's why I simplified into avoiding them.

I've found that I personally prefer skipping at level 8. Obviously if I'm headed into a fight I'll throw a point into the 1, but if I'm just going around jungling I can afford to get the 2 maxed as quick as possible. Again, another personal preference type deal.

Thanks for the feedback again

Something I often explain to my friends who keep dying in a full damage build is that it is useless having 6 damage items to deal damage if you aren't alive to dish it out. Protections are always helpful no matter what the role.

Especially Shifter's Shield right now, 70 power for scaling rivalling Bloodforge and Arondight with protections with it too.

Branmuffin17 (394) | March 6, 2021 11:43pm
When I'm talking about defensive items, it's because you say "I know that a defensive item may make sense on paper when behind but in reality it doesn’t work. You just won’t be able to do enough damage and a single defensive item will not provide enough to make up for that lack of power."

But then you actually list both Mantle and Cloak and say they are "situational but viable," which is pretty contradictory. That's what I'm saying you need to fix.

Magi's Cloak is a good situational pickup if you're facing a CC-heavy comp that can kill you if you're stunned and your beads are down.

Yeah, I just think concentrating on power is so strong on Bastet because of her scaling, and she has pretty solid escape

Gulfwulf (81) | February 28, 2021 2:05pm
True, but any type of grab, pull, or cripple will prevent her from bring able to use it.
