Introduction

I'm Saber224 and welcome to my first guide!

I've been playing Smite since it's Beta on Playstation 4 and when I first set my eyes on Ao Kuang it was love at first sight. He's been my main ever since.

I've used SmiteFire for a long time and have always wanted to make a guide for other Ao Kuang fans or soon to be fans.

This guide is a work in progress, I'll be updating it the more I keep playing Season 5. I'm by no means a pro jungler this isn't a jungle guide just a jungle build. I'll also forever lament the fact I missed out on the Dragon King skin, I've been meaning to write a strongly worded letter to Hi-Rez but I digress.

Any feedback to the build(s) or the guide itself is appreciated.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Ao Kuang - Strengths and Weaknesses

- Rage Inducing Burst Damage.
- Good Escape w/invisibility.
- Executions
- Good lifesteal
- You're a freaking dragon.

- Weak to crowd control
- Ability Dependent.
- Weak early game.
- Executions are telegraphed.
- No crowd control in kit.
- Executions can be stolen.
- High skill floor.

Abilities

	Ao Kuang's updated passive, so when you execute a God with King of the Eastern Seas you gain a stack of 15 magical power and 5% lifesteal and it stacks up to 3 times. This passive helps to snowball Ao Kuang ahead of your enemies.
	Ao Kuang's escape, you teleport a short range and leave an illusion that deals damage when it runs out or you recast the ability. You can slip away from most engagements with this ability, or as a chase to finish a low enemy.
	Ao Kuang summons 6 dragons, these dragons deal damage to enemies when you land a basic attack or Wild Storm, you can also fire all or remaining dragons in a line by recasting this ability. This is Ao Kuang's Bread and Butter, it provides insane amounts of burst damage. Against most enemies landing all your dragons can lead to an easy execution. You should never engage an enemy that isn't low health with this on ability on cooldown.

Ao Kuang shoots lighting in a cone in front of him. This ability in unison with can do massive damage to squishy enemies.

The ability that makes Ao Kuang, well Ao Kuang if an enemy is under 30% health you execute the enemy and regain a percentage of health back if they're not or use CC immunity/Invincibility you instead knock the target up and deal damage. When the execution is performed this ability can be used to chase down enemies, get a quick kill and escape or initiate another team fight against the retreating enemies. If you can execute, do so unlike other executions in the game Ao Kuang's pairs with his passive you want to get your 3 stacks to get the increased lifesteal and power early on.

Combos

My typical Ao Kuang Combo is activate Dragon Call initiate with Blink Rune hit one or more enemies with Wild Storm continue attacking with autos and Wild Storm until they are low enough to execute and if you or your team starts losing the engagement escape with Water Illusion.

Items and Explanation

- Cooldown reduction is helpful for any mage, I prefer these over Shoes of the Magi typically because I prefer extra mana and CDR but to each their own.

- The early game damage and penetration can help Ao Kuang's early ganks. If you want a more aggressive early game this is the item for you.

- In season 5 doom orb is practically core for most magical junglers to give them the increased mobility many of them lack. As well as being rather inexpensive for it's damage.

- This item helps Ao Kuang's 1v1 potential with it's damage spike and added lifesteal I typically build this item if I'm behind.

- Combos very well with Ao Kuang's kit and the added lifesteal is nice I build this typically if I'm already snowballing. Choose between it or Bancroft's Talon.

- Adds some CC that Ao Kuang lacks needs in his kit.

- Good penetration and damage spike along with cooldown reduction, build this if you're ahead already if not Spear of the Magus is a good cheaper option.

- Always an option for his high damage and new passive, can help Ao Kuang Secure kills with his ultimate on cooldown. But this item should always be bought at item 5 or 6 due to it's high price.

- A newer item I haven't really played with but it's passive work's well with Ao Kuang's already good lifesteal.

Defensive Options

- Against a physical heavy team, this item adds good crowd control reduction and mana to Ao Kuang's kit.

- Ao Kuang's greatest weakness is crowd control, it can completely shut him down, Spirit robe helps provide extra survivability when CC'd.

- With a coordinated team you may not find an opening or be focused down, this item's ability can help you escape a sticky situation.

- Good early game item that provides physical protection and nice damage and penetration.

Gods to be Aware Of

Awilix - A good Awilix building Ancile is the bane of my existence when playing Ao Kuang, her mobility and ultimate make her a hard foe as Ao Kuang.

Geb - Geb's shield can completely negate King of the Eastern Seas so make sure that Geb has either used that ability before wasting your execution.

Hel - Hel's ability to make people CC immune and heal can cause a lot of problems when trying to kill the enemy back line during a team fight. This goes the same for Aphrodite.

Items that Can Counter You.

Ancile- Can completely mess up your combo and your ability to escape as well. Many good assassins and warriors will build this to counter you.

Magi's Cloak - Is a good tool for Ao Kuang as much as it counters his Ultimate. Same goes for Purification Beads.

Mystical Mail - This can break Ao Kuang's element of surprise by ending his invisibilty.

Aesthetics

Build and Content

Alright, the meat of the guide.

Builds first.

Build 1 Jungle variants: Seems like pretty good general progression to me. Doom Orb seems like a good fit for him, for quick jungling and cheap price. It IS considered a bridge item though, so unless you value the things it provides over full T3 items, then you probably want to consider possible replacements for it late-game. Also, you might consider getting it even before your shoes. The MS it provides, along with consistent pickup of your Speed buff, should give you plenty of MS, and the significantly higher stats compared to Shoes of the Magi can perhaps help your early aggression, clear, and mana sustain.

You might also consider Spear of Desolation before Bancroft's Talon for some really strong early damage (and the CDR is helpful early).

Do you feel Gem of Isolation is pretty core? I know he's only got his slow in his ranged Dragon Call, so I do see its appeal.
Build 2 seems generally legit. In a big teamfight mode like this, though, I'd think I'd prefer getting one protection item (e.g. Mantle of Discord against balanced teams) just because it's very likely I'll be getting hit sometimes, whether being caught, or from a random AOE as you're going in for the kill. In arena, do you see the need for double-lifesteal? I'd assume Polynomicon every time, but not sure about the need for 2...

Content.

For Water Illusion, you do talk about using this as a chase or escape. Maybe a bit more talk on saving it specifically as an escape when blink is down, unless you see an isolated enemy and aren't going into dangerous territory?
In the combos, wouldn't activating Dragon Call before blinking in be more beneficial for making sure it's ready to go if you blink in right on top of the enemy?
For item explanations, it might be helpful to readers if you explain your preferences a bit more. For example, you say cooldown is helpful for any mage for Focus, and early game damage and pen can help Ao's weaker early game, but elaborating a bit might be nice. The added pen from Magi helps his early damage specifically against gods, not minions, so it's for early aggression and ganking.

Other elaborations on other items, where you find it helpful for others, would be good too. Talk about WHEN to build things like Poly and Bancroft, and remind people that Tahuti is absolutely a late game item. (If you don't want to do this, that's fine too, honestly...you may not be tailoring this guide toward new players)
