Introduction

Okay welcome to my Skadi build for S4, conquest. I've been playing Skadi since her release and I think it was actually love at first sight. The concept of the character and her unique kit makes her really special to me. Im an actual rank X Skadi 3k worshippers, I know it's not much, but I can kinda help if you're struggling with this character. In this guide I'll talk about the build, relics, playstile, matchups, abilites, etc...
So feel free to take a seat and let's begin! <3

(Also its the first guide I make so have some mercy on me <3)

"Feel the power of a true Jotunn!"

Skadi's God Reveal

Pros and Cons

Pros:
- Really high damage output lategame.
- Great at 1v1'ing other hunters.
- Good pusher.
- Great against towers.
- Has a cool doggo <3

Cons:
- No reliable escape.
- Struggles a bit early game.
- Struggles against attack speed characters.
- Can be shut down easily if not paying attention.

The Build

To build Skadi you dont wanna go crit builds like some other people do, as crit is literally useless for Kaldr. you want to go an ability based build with high damage and pen, and I'll explain it now:

For starting, you can decide between a variety of starts, that just adjusts to your playstyle, just pick whatever you feel better with.

Note: You can tweak the build order to your own taste!
Core Items

- Warrior Tabi: Warrior Tabi is obviously a must have. It is a better pick over Ninja Tabi as Rune Of The Hunt is less relevant now since her ult Winter's Grasp got changed so Kaldr doesn't get the inmunity anymore.

- Transcendence: This is a must have in Skadi, however your build is going to be you must have Transcendence, she is an ability-based hunter, and every ability-based hunter needs Transcendence for the mana sustain and ability power it provides. Really good item overall.
Generic Build

- Asi: No, Kaldr does not benefit from lifesteal, but he does benefit from the rest attributes of Asi. Asi is a really good item pick on Skadi as it gives Kaldr more damage through attack speed and some pen to increase the damage input for both him and your abilities.

- Qin's Sais: And no, Kaldr also does not benefit from the Qin's Sais passive. Not long ago Skadi got some nerfs to her buddy, so this item is really one of your most sources of damage, gives you some good power for your abilities and some attack speed for both you and doggo, also althought Kaldr does not benefit from the passive you still get a lot out of it. Overall a high damage item.

- Titan's Bane: This item is just to finish up the build by adding the last bit of penetration you needed to shred those tanky targets and towers down. Keep in mind that pen affects both you and Kaldr, so Skadi as an ability-based hunter benefits a lot from this.
Optional Items

- Brawler's Beat Stick: Get this item if they have any healers for example like Hel or Chang'e. You can take it either last item or sooner if you feel you need the antihealing ASAP.

- The Executioner: Be really careful about this item, as its not a really good option with Titan's Bane as the passives together dont work really well. A good variation from Titan's Bane and if you have more than one physical damage dealers in your team.

- Jotunn's Wrath: Good item overall, gives the pen you need for Skadi and provides a good amount of physical power and CDR to have your abilities up more often.

- Winged Blade: A good defensive item if you're looking for one. Provides good defensive stats and its passive, the ability to run over slows, helps Skadi by giving her more survivability.

- Bloodforge: Good damage item. Usually take this if you feel you're really ahead. Do not go for this item really early as it is relatively expensive. You could change it for Asi later in the build if the match exceeds for too long.

-Magi's Blessing: One of the best defensive items with Skadi that helps her get out of tricky situations. If you feel you need this early to survive ganks, go ahead.

- Spirit Robe: Standard defensive item, should get it if you feel you need a lot more protections.

- Shifter's Shield: Really good item, one of my favourites to go indeed. Offers good defense and great damage depending on your health.

- Runeforged Hammer: Not one of the best options, but offers some good team damage if your team has a lot of Crowd Control. Kinda a really situational item as it relies a lot on Crowd Control, but you can still get a lot out of it as Piercing Cold, Permafrost and Winter's Grasp benefits from it.

- The Crusher: Power, pen and attack speed, all good stats, a good item if the enemy team still has tanky targets and you still feel you don't have all the pen you need.

Relics

So Skadi benefits from a lot of Relics in general, the decision you make upon taking these Relics depends really on the enemy team (Or even on yours.)

- Purification Beads
Beads is really useful on Skadi as she is a non-escape hunter, you can have Purification Beads so you can get out of those scary situations you get yourself in.

- Heavenly Wings
Sprint and Beads is a really good relic combo on Skadi, it will get you out of most situations, also Heavenly Wings could be used offensive rather than defensive as Kaldr benefits from it too, so you can use it to chase someone down.

- Aegis Amulet
Not much to say here really, if you feel you dont really need Purification Beads, or that you're going to get shut down a lot, just get Aegis Amulet.

-Bracer of Undoing
Well, everyone to its own taste, if you prefer Undoing rather than one of the actives above, its up to you. Definetly not a bad relic on her.

Skills

Kaldr, the Winter Wolf(Passive)

Skadi has a pet dog called Kaldr. Kaldr can attack all enemies, from enemy gods to lane minions on buff camps. Kaldr has up to 5 hit points. 5 lane minions hit reduce 1 Kaldr hit point while normal monsters like buff camps reduce 1 Kaldr hp on hit.
Attack Speed: 50% of Skadi's
Movement Speed: 110% of Skadi's

Piercing Cold

Skadi's most useful clear ability. A straight up line skill shot that deals a moderate amount of damage and slows enemies.
Damage: 90 / 140 / 190 / 240 / 290 (+80% of your Physical Power)
Slow: 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40%
Cost: 70 / 75 / 80 / 85 / 90
Cooldown: 15s

Rune of the hunt

This ability is used to control Kaldr and send him to attack the target you decide.
Note: Can be used without having to level it up.
Attack Damage: 40 / 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 % of Skadi's basic attack damage.
Rank 1: Kaldr gains a dash attack.
Rank 3: Kaldr kills heal him.
Rank 5: Kaldr basic attacks give skadi 10% movement speed
Cost: None
Cooldown: 0.5s

Permafrost

A big area in the floor with hard CC that makes enemies slide while slowing them and gives Skadi a moderate movement speed boost.
Initial damage: 70 / 100 / 130 / 160 / 190 (+60% of your Physical Power)
Damage per tick: 5 / 10 / 15 / 20 / 25 (+5% of your Physical Power)
Slow: 15%
Movement Speed: 40%
Radius: 16 / 18 / 20 / 22 / 24
Cost: 70 / 75 / 80 / 85 / 90
Cooldown: 18s

Winter's Grasp
A blizzard appears upon Kaldr and Skadi for 4s, rooting the enemies in place, healing Kaldr to max hp and dealing damage every tick to enemies within the range of the blizzard.
Damage per hit: 10 / 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 (+5% of your Physical Power)
Max damage: 80 / 160 / 240 / 320 / 400 (+40% of your Physical Power)
Root duration: 1 / 1.25 / 1.5 / 1.75 / 2s
Radius: 20
Cost: 80 / 90 / 100 / 110 / 120
Cooldown: 90s

Level Order
Option 1:
Usually you want to max your Piercing Cold first, and then proceed to get your Permafrost over Rune Of The Hunt. The reason being is that since Skadi's ultimate does no longer make Kaldr inmune to damage, now it is not as relevant as before. Then get Rune Of The Hunt even before Winter's Grasp, it is not really worh leveling up the ultimate until last levels.

Option 2:
Still level up first your Piercing Cold and your Winter's Grasp last. But in this case you can level up Rune Of The Hunt before Permafrost. This is if you want to use Permafrost more of an escape tool rather than a hard poking/damage ability. If you stil want to level up Permafrost you can put 3 points first in Rune Of The Hunt so Kaldr gets the ability to heal after killing minions or so.

Playstyle

Be smart when playing with Skadi.

Playstyle

Laning Phase
-In laning fase you normally want to start with your Piercing Cold at level 1.
-You can use Kaldr to poke the enemy hunter while clearing as you wont necessarily need him for fighting this early on.
-Be careful not to overextend as at early levels Skadi is really vulnerable to ganks.
-You can use your Permafrost to poke enemies too so you move them away from their wave to screw their push.

Not Laning Phase
-Normally you wanna start a fight with your Piercing Cold to slow down the enemy, and after that send Kaldr to attack.
- Do NOT use your Permafrost unless you're sure you'll be safe after getting the kill or else it will result in you getting killed.
-When using Permafrost play with the enemy, if they fall for it, they are on your territory, try and make them go to one direction as you escape in the other.
-You can always use Permafrost as an initator for the fights, but be aware not to use it if you don't know enemies actual positioning, it could result in you getting killed!
-Be aware not to send Kaldr too early or else he is probably going to be eliminated quickly.
-For using your Winter's Grasp wait til Kaldr is at 1 hit point, but be careful not to wait too long or else he will return to you resulting less effectiveness.
-Try not to use Winter's Grasp to chase an enemy instead of healing Kaldr if the enemy has an escape. Keep in mind that Winter's Grasp is a root, not a cripple. Winter's Grasp can also be a way of burning the beads of the adversary.
-When running away from someone, keep in mind that Rune Of The Hunt grants you movement speed when Kaldr hits enemies, its just a 10% buff but can really help run away from death.

Teamfights
Keep in mind that you're a hunter with no escape, people will tend to target you in teamfights. You have to play mindful and be aware of your positioning, if for some reason you get out of position and you get caught by one or more players, try and use your Permafrost to get out of that situation, use the movement speed in your favor, as soon as the start sliding in your Permafrost, they are on your territory, you have control over the situation , play around that.

Matchups

Skadi has easy matchups against most hunters as she has Kaldr with her so that gives her the huge advantage of attacking and using abilities while blocking basic attacks. Although she has kind of a bad time against high attack speed characters, because her doggo dies faster, and without Rune Of The Hunt feels really vulnerable.

Skadi's hard matchups!
- Cernunnos ***
- Kali
- Mercury
- Artemis
- Rama ***
- Erlang Shen ***

Mostly any good with a high attack speed build, keep in mind not all of them are in this list.

Skadi's real counters!
- Rama
- Erlang Shen
- Cernunnos
For the way their abilites work, Erlang Shen, Rama and Cernunnos have a really great advantage on Skadi as one hit from their basic attacks count for 2 Kaldr's health points, be really careful!.

Hey Skapeek!

Overall, I think this is a really good start to your guide. I like the way it's looking now after you made some of your changes! I don't have many complaints, but I do have a few suggestions.
  • I know your Item Section --> "The Build" isn't too too big, but separating them out into different Chapters i.e. "Core Items", "Generic Build", and so on, will help readers know where they can quickly get information, especially if you expand more on the items.

  • Right now, you have all of Skadi's abilities typed out. I find this very useful for it allows the reader to see everything upfront without clicking anything; however, it's a bit vague. Assuming I've never played Skadi before, and I stumble upon your guide...what do I do with Piercing Cold? Do I primarily use it for clear, do I save it for an Enemy engagement because of the 15s cooldown? A small blurb on how, and when to use the skill could go a long way in improving the quality and depth of the guide. I know you talk about how to use the abilities in the Playstyle Tab, but not everyone is going to read that tab.

  • Lastly, the "Matchups" Tab is a bit vague as well. You note "mostly any god with a high attack speed build, keep in mind not all of them are in this list". What if I build an Attack Speed Ymir? See what I mean by vague? Maybe be more specific by saying, "Any ADC who build high attack speed is a difficult matchup for Skadi".

Again, I really like the the way this guide has started, but I think with a bit more descriptions and depth, it could really shine! Keep up the good work!

Hey drexler!

I don't really have much time right now so I'll try and fix everything you've told me as soon as possible :P

Please have some mercy keep in mind this is actually the first guide I ever make on this page, so I still have a lot to learn, anyhow, thanks for all the suggestions, they are always welcome! <3

I agree with you, especially in regard to the matchups section. In the future or when you find the time, you could extend the list, do your researches and go more in-depth with every ADC matchup, with tips on how to adapt your playstyle against them. It will take time, but I think it would be very useful and interesting. However, do as you like, yours is already a nice guide :)

Thank you very much! <3

It's actually my first guide so I hope it can keep up with the good ones :P
I really want to expand the match-ups with every ADC, (and even gods o_O) but that would take a lot of time, if I had someone who actually offered to help me, but like this I'd have to play A LOT to actually have every matchup in the game, anyways I'll try and keep expanding it as I can! Thank you <3

Hi Skapeek

Figure the others have you covered with their extensive comments. Will just add some of my own and keep it simple.
  • Your generic build (items 1-5) are spot on with meta, both with items and order. I like that you also give interesting variation for items 3 and on, as options...and where I normally don't suggest Jotunn's Wrath on ADCs, in this case, I can see it working for Skadi in particular, at least situationally. Her cooldowns are horrid.

  • Your explanations and content seem solid.

  • Eventually you may want to go and do a hard edit/review on your guide...you've entered the realm of the Grammar Police, and there are errors everywhere. Not dissing the guide, mind, just mentioning.
Anyway, I think this is a great first start. +1

Hey branmuffin17!
I don't usually build Jotunn's Wrath either but I still wrote it cause i see some people feel good with it.

Also I've corrected loads of stupid errors already but I'm just not a native english speaker so I might pass something out or even think some misspelling/grammar error is fine, so sorry about that </3

Anyways thanks for the +1! Any critiques are always welcome! <3

No worries on the spelling/grammar. I only speak 2 languages: English and bad English. It's helpful growing up with English as a native language...it has way too many stupid rules and rule-breaking situations, so learning as a 2nd or further language is a huge pain. I applaud your efforts.

Hey Skapeek,

I love playing Skadi which is why she is one of my most played gods.

I like your generic build as I literally build the same things on her. My last item is usually The Crusher or Shifter's Shield. The Crusher for the power, pen and attack speed. Shifter's because of the good power and protections when you need it.

I am not the biggest fan of The Executioner just because it doesn't help with tower take down and doesn't work with Kaldr, but it still is a decent pickup for her. I would think it should be built later than at item 3, since not as many protections will be built that early. I think Asi is a solid Item 3, since you will need that lifesteal for sustain. Plus it gives you early cheap penetration and good attack speed.

Bloodforge is okay, but really expensive as you already state. You could make a note of saying sell Asi late game to get Bloodforge, but up to you.

The only big thing I don't necessarily like is your level order, granted it probably depends on how you use Permafrost. For me, I use Permafrost as pure disruption/escape, or on the minion wave. It helps with her minion clear, and it also disrupts the enemy from clearing as well (moves them out of position, maybe makes them miss). The damage from it is okay, but I think you would have better use if you upgraded Rune Of The Hunt 2nd after her Piercing Cold. With the latest patch, Permafrost is nerfed as well. It drops down to 50% scaling instead of 60% and also the movement speed buff from it is different at all levels (not flat 40% anymore) making me want to use it even more as a disruptor and not as a damage output ability.

My suggestion to you would be, if you still want to upgrade Permafrost 2nd is to put a total of 3 points into Rune Of The Hunt first then focus on Permafrost. The reason why is Kaldr gains a life point for each enemy killed at this level, minion or otherwise. You need Kaldr as much as possible for pushing/pressure and with only the 1 point into Kaldr until level 13, you will constantly have to sit and wait while he regains his life by his regeneration only. This puts you at a disadvantage because instead of your consistent 2vs1 you have with Kaldr, you become more passive waiting when you can be and should be more aggressive.

If you put the total of 3 points in first, you can hit the minion wave with Piercing Cold (with it fully upgraded it will take out most of them) then you finish them off with Kaldr so he gains some of his life back. Then you can focus on pushing the enemy god back with Kaldr, he gets hurt, you just rinse and repeat on the minion wave. After level 3 on Rune Of The Hunt, you could refocus on Permafrost since Kaldr only gains an extra ability at level 5. I would like to hear your thoughts on that suggestion.

Overall though, I like your build and your reasoning's behind the item selection. Your relics are good and ones I usually get as well. Your play style sections are fine as a general overview. With her not having an escape, she needs to be wary of ganks of course, but she should be somewhat aggressive still. Communication and wards are the key to helping with the impending ganks. You could also use Permafrost as an initiator as well. Enemy god hits Permafrostyou start to close in and send Kaldr while hitting them with Piercing Cold. At that point they should be escaping, if so, walk over your Permafrost for the boost and chase. If they escape away. Retreat back, hopefully Permafrost is still there so you can get the speed boost again. Not necessarily the safest thing to do, but if you know where everyone is(communication and wards) and know you can secure the kill this way or at the very least severely damage them, then it is definitely worth it.

For the grammar and spelling, the only thing that is sticking out to me as a sore thumb is the misspelling of Phase in the play style section. You have it as fase when it should be phase. Otherwise, I am good with the little mistakes especially if you are a non native English speaker. I give you props for doing this well with our screwed up language.

Hey newbiemj!

Thanks for taking your time to post this comment really <3
After reading it I already tweaked some things here and there like the build, or the leveling order. I said upgrading Permafrost first as I think it is better than Kaldr as he can die faster in teamfights and when fighting high attack speed oponents as he is no longer inmune now. Anyways if their team doesn't have a good way of killing doggo I think you have a really good point. I added your option too as "Everyone to it's own taste" right?

Thanks for the comment, really appreciate all critiques! <3

I'm so happy that the site is receiving so many good guides and nice people lately. Your guide is really good.

However, I think Cern should be considered a real counter because his summer stance procs twice, doesn't it? I'm not sure about his 2 tho. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Skapeek (1) | August 28, 2017 10:10am
I didn't really thought about Cern... It's just that there are too many gods I can't remember all of them! But thanks for the info, already wrote it down!

Oh, and thank you very much for complimenting my guide, it's actually the first one I make so I hope it can keep up with the real good ones! <3

Hi, Skapeek.

Nice Skadi guide so far. I know you said that this is your first guide, so I thought I would offer some tips that you may not know about, as well as my personal opinion on the guide.

First and foremost, your chapters are good subjects that should be in every guide. Build description, matchups, playstyles, etc.. That can result in a lot of writing, and it might help to give the guide a nicer look for the reader. You may or may not be aware of this Guide Template and this BB Coding Guide for newer members. They helped me a lot when I first joined.

I like the build that you provided, but I think that you could offer more variety. Your starting build variety is great, but then you have no more options until the last item. For example, if you're up against an enemy with strong healing, you might want Brawler's Beat Stick sooner rather than later.

To give the build more variety, I feel that you could add other item options as well. Some of my personal favorites that you may want to consider are:
  • Jotunn's Wrath: Gives Skadi the power and penetration that you talked about in your guide, as well as some cooldown reduction to keep her abilities available more often.

  • The Crusher: This also gives power and penetration, as well as attack speed if you want more focus on auto-attacks. Additionally, the passive also provides you with some minor cooldown reduction.

  • The Executioner: Good for auto-attacks and shredding enemy defenses. Good if you have other physical teammates who can take advantage of the passive in group fights.

  • Winged Blade: This is a good, cheap, defensive option for countering slows. Also provides you with some crowd control reduction, movement speed, and health.

  • Magi's Blessing: Anti-crowd control with great health and protections for the cost. A solid defensive option.

As a final critique, I noticed a few spelling and grammar errors, namely in the Playstyle section. It doesn't bother me, but some people around here like to grammar police :p

Overall, good job, good information. I think this guide could be good with a few improvements here and there, as your free time allows. Thanks for making this guide!

Hey DV-8! Real thanks for the critique! <3
Critiques are always welcome, I said this was my first guide already so I have still a lot more to learn.

The guide template and bb coding guide really helped me improve the guide quite a lot! It almost looks like a totally different guide now, I really have to thank you cause you're the one who made it possible in some way <3

I'm sure it's still not the best guide by far, but I really like how it ended up, I did realise how "boring" it was before and I hope it's much better now. Plz give me some feedback on how you feel the guide is right now and if you think it needs some other changes here and there! Thank you! <3

Oh and btw... Sorry for my grammar errors, I'm not english at all but I try my best to stay away from those grammar polices, but well, I guess ten years of english studying are still not enough! xD

I'm glad I could help :)

I will be happy to tell you what I think about your new guide, but first you have to make the update public (something else I didn't know for a while, lol).

After you publish a guide, every change you make and save won't show to others until you click the "Publish" button again.

A good way to check this is to log out of your profile, then click on your guide. This is how other members and visitors see your guide.

By the way, I think your English is great! :D
