Hou Yi, The Suntouched Archer
June 29, 2018
Author Notes (+Update Log)
Hello, welcome to my first God guide. I hope this guide is helpful on teaching you the basics of Hou Yi.
Disclaimer: Everything in this guide is what works for me in most situations - if it doesn't work for you leave a comment and if I like it, I'll add it into the guide.
Now onto to the actual guide. Enjoy!
Hou Yi's Passive Ability is Suntouched
This is Hou Yi's simple yet effective Passive. Basically, if Hou Yi is struck by a Critical Hit - he will become immune to ALL Critical Hits for 3 seconds.
Making this a very useful boxing tool against Critical Hit Based Gods such as Artemis
and Jing Wei
Additionally, this cannot be removed by any form of Crowd Control, so it always lasts for the full 3 seconds (unless you die) when proc'd by an enemy God.
Hou Yi's 1st Ability is Ricochet
This is ALWAYS the first ability upgraded
as it is his only form of good waveclear and damage in the early game. Ricochet is an ability that can bounce of a surface up to 2 times, with each shot gaining 40% more damage per bounce. (Note: This "Bonus Damage" is only against enemy Gods.
Also, the third bounce is almost 2 times as strong as the initial shot (1 x 1.4 x 1.4 = 1.96) where 1.4 is the 40% damage increase).
So, the 3rd bounce does 1.96x the damage of the initial shot
This ability is useful for clearing waves and camps. It is also good for poke due to its 10 second cooldown. Ricochet can be deadly in close-quarters due to fast rebounds causing large amounts of damage in short periods of time.
Also, Ricochet can be used to poke distances at greater lengths when rebounded off a wall. This means that more distance can be between you and the enemy whilst still applying damage. (Note: This shot is easier to dodge though)
--> Ricochet can be upgraded at Level 9
, rather than Sunbreaker; as it gives more dmg output overall - also Sunbreaker can be leaped, dashed or ran out of. Where if you're good with mechs then Ricochet is the better choice
. Not a necessity but it might help.
Ricochet can also be used to kill recalling enemies, due to them thinking they are at a safe distance (Note: The distance of 3 bounces is 210 units, 3 times longer than the first shot at 70 units) so the bounces allow for a kill from greater distances, giving one of the most satisfying feelings in Smite.
Hou Yi's 2nd Ability is Mark of the Golden Crow
This ability gives Hou Yi's entire kit a bit more flavour, by applying additional effects to one singular enemy with the 10 second Crow's Mark.
Each ability gains a new secondary effect:
- Ricochet gains a 1 second stun (stuns DO NOT stack with bounces).
- Divebomb gains a small knock-up effect.
- Sunbreaker gains a 20% slow lasting 0.5 seconds (each sun causes a slow).
Also, enemies become visible on the minimap whilst having the Mark of the Golden Crow and a ping sound (same as a ward) plays when the enemy is behind a surface (Note: For some reason minions and other gods can act as surfaces, creating the ping).
Additionally, per every 10% of Health the enemy God is missing Hou Yi gains a 1% damage increase, up to a maximum of 5%.
This Ability should be used on the God you are focusing either in a solo fight or in a team fight, as it gives potential for additional effects and damage to be applied.
Hou Yi's 3rd Ability is Divebomb
There isn't much to this Ability, it is Hou Yi's leap. (Note: I'd highly recommend this for an escape only, as it has a lengthy 15 second cooldown)
The main use for Divebomb is to escape tricky or un-winnable situations, the ability can leap over walls and can be circled in a full 360 degrees.
Divebomb can be used to execute or chase an enemy on low hp, this is only advised if you have more than 50% Health or if being trade killed is worth it, as in the late game it can take up to 60 seconds to respawn and that isn't really worth 1 kill.
Finally, if the Mark of the Golden Crow is applied to a target
, who then dashes away (Note: Doesn't work for all "Dash" Ability in Smite) it MIGHT interrupt a dash or other slow casting abilities by providing a slight knock-up
, but it is very difficult to apply this interruption and requires hours of practice plus good timing.
Hou Yi's 4th Ability is Sunbreaker
Sunbreaker is Hou Yi's Ultimate Ability, where he shoots 9 arrows into the sky causing 9 suns to fall from the sky to a fixed location within a radius of 30 units. The Ability lasts for 4.5s seconds
(Note: Each sun falls every 0.5 seconds).
Each time a sun hits the floor damage is applied, so enemy Gods take damage every 0.5 seconds when in the radius of Sunbreaker. Also, enemies with the Mark of the Golden Crow are slowed by 20% inside the Ultimate.
Sunbreaker is very useful in team fights as it can change the flow of a team fight, as the enemy should focus on evading Hou Yi's Ult and this allows for a few extra basics or a Ricochet. Sunbreaker can cause massive damage when coupled with the stun from Ricochet (using Mark of the Golden Crow) it means the enemy God is stunned for 1 second, they take a minimum of 2 hits from Sunbreaker.
This ability should be used sparingly as it is only available once every 90 seconds (without Cooldown Reduction), however it can be used to clear waves and defend the tower if you're being pressured by an enemy God.
First things first, these items ARE NOT the 100% best items to buy as all situations require different items or builds - this is just what I've found gives good overall damage, sustain and general effectiveness regardless of the situation.
My Current Go-To Build for Hou Yi:
My Build for Hou Yi
The Items To Build:
- I prefer Ninja Tabi to Warrior Tabi on Hou Yi due to his low attack speed scaling.
- This item gives a big power spike and can be brought online at a decent pace, allowing stacks to be built in the early game. So, Transcendence is a good pick for Hou Yi as it allows him to have high amounts of Mana, meaning he can constantly poke with Ricochet.
(Note: When fully stacked this item provides 97 Physical Power at level 20)
- Core item for all ADC Boxers in Smite. Gives Power, Attack Speed and reduces enemy Physical Protections.
- Devourer's Gauntlet is the current go to (as of Patch 5.9)
, its power and lifesteal have just that bit more utility than
when it comes to most situations and builds.
(Note: When fully stacked this item provides 65 Physical Power and 24% Lifesteal)
- Grants Attack Speed, Lifesteal and Penetration. Useful item as when below 35% Health, you gain an additional 25% Lifesteal. Amazing Lifesteal when combined with Devourer's Gauntlets.
- Extremely useful on builds with High Attack Speed, doing 4% of their Max Health per hit.
- Build this to vastly boost Attack Speed and shred tanks with Penetration builds.
- Good item for Hou Yi, deadly combo with
. Literally melts tanks.
- Brings memories of Frostalis, slows for 20% and reduces enemy damage by 20%. Great all round boxing item.
- To fully get the reverie of Frostalis on Hunters, buy this as well as .
- 25% Crit, those crits do 30% more damage and gives 40 Physical Power. Most expensive item for Physical Gods (tied with Malice), but worth it when building crit.

~Section still in progress~
For starters, you're heading to the "Duo Lane
/ Long Lane
", derived from where the ADCs
from both teams go up against each other in the lane with the longest distance between the tier 1 towers. (Sorry if that sounds condescending)
When the game starts, recognise whether the Duo Lane is on the left hand side (Team Order) or the right hand side (Team Chaos).
Then proceed to the lane after buying your items, potions and getting your first relic (which should be Purification Beads, unless aegis is extremely beneficial).
Now you're in lane, hug the wall closest to the jungle, so that you can see the enemy if they enter the lane but they won't be able to see you.
You may progress no further than the second mossy rock if you lose the lane match-up, if you're confident in your winning/even lane match-up then you can go one further. But no more, or the enemy team can quickly 4-man rotate to you.
Lane Match-Ups can be found here ()

Just a little footnote, I will be expanding this guide to include specific game modes and situations.
