I'm ZapMouse, a PC player playing on EU servers. I play every role, but specialize in jungle and the solo lane and in both of those I generally play Ratatoskr

I'm the leader of the Foxes, who are you? - "Final Fusion" Ratatoskr

I've been playing smite since season 2 however I took a break for several years and started playing again at the start of season 8 where I fell in love with the reworked he's exceptionally cute, fun to play, and his voice packs are simply the best in the game, and no one else comes close (I will fight you on this!)

This guide is primarily about Ratatoskr, I dont speak much about how to play Jungle or Solo lane, and this guide is written with the assumption that you already have a baseline understanding of how each role is played

The main thing to note here is Ratatoskr's progression. The AoE auto attack helps out your clear a ton, and thanks to the 0.5x auto attacks, you can infact use manikins scepter fairly well if you so wish.

charges up then leaps from the ground to a branch above his head. He may jump to 2 more branches before choosing a landing location. Upon landing he deals damage and Knocks up enemies. Through the Cosmos can be canceled or timed out from any of the branches, causing Ratatoskr to strike down at the current target location.

You can replace the ultimate with blink as your initiation instead

Ideally you would like to have an auto attack between and however, the knockup isnt long enough to get an auto attack in without the enemy regaining control, for a brief moment, which could allow them to escape or fire off an ability to peel, such as 's or 's Backflip, so don't do an auto between those two.

If you're not sure if you can fully kill the enemy, save your incase you need it to escape

Why not use Flurry before Acorn Blast since it reduces protections meaning more damage?

Items

In the Jungle Ratatoskr is quite versatlile when it comes to builds, he works fine as full damage, or as a hybrid, and he only has one item which is a must build, that being Jotunn's Wrath

This chapter focuses mainly on discussing the items in the jungler build although I do go over solo lane briefly, this is because what you build in solo lane is almost entirely matchup dependant and it's up to you to figure it out for each game you play

The Acorns

The Acorns

Too long, didnt read version,

's passive grants him a magic acorn of the world tree, which can be upgraded into 4 distinct upgrades, each providing different bonuses and steering Ratatoskr into the role he has chosen.

Evergreen Acorn

grants you a huge amount of sustain, giving you both extra health from items and healing whenever you attack an enemy god with an ability, this Acorn is mainly used in the solo lane, and is a very poor option for jungling

While the additional sustain is nice to have, this acorn is purely defensive, choosing this acorn is as if you are planning to lose, besides from the small amount power it provides it gives zero additional damage and so it's usually seen in meme "Walking Fountain" type healing builds, and compared to it's brother it's not seen as viable

Thickbark Acorn

is the standard Acorn for any solo lane Ratatoskr, the additional charge of flurry is what allows you to deal excellent damage while still being able to build tank and the additional 10% protections is just the icing on the cake here.

This Acorn is mainly used in solo, but it can also be used in the jungle and works well when paired with a hybrid build that makes heavy use of

Bristlebush Acorn

The Spicy Nut, is made for Crit builds, boosting the power of your , allowing it to critically hit, and granting you 20% crit chance. This Acorn isnt too useful early game but once you get some crit items online it can hit incredibly hard.

Although this acorn does give you higher damage than anything else in Ratatoskr's kit, it turns your escape ability into your primary source of damage and it makes Ratatoskr's early game worse, which is really the time where you want to be doing as much as you can. Although certainly still viable in jungle, this Acorn is rarely seen.

Thistlethorn Acorn

Thistlethorn Acorn is all about your third ability giving you two additional acorns that you fire out, which deal extra damage, and also make it much easier to land the three acorns needed to get a stun.

This is the primary Acorn, the most popular jungle option, giving you exceptional damage, but it does fall off at the very late game compared to but if you're picking Ratatoskr, you're playing for the early game, not the lategame anyway.

How to build (Jungle)

How to build (Solo)

Rollout : Opening Moves for Ratatoskr

Option A : Standard Opening

Standard opening for Rata is starting at speed, moving to the big harpy camp, and then joining the mid laner. Pretty much the standard jungle start that you should already be familiar with

An alternative to this route that some prefer is the solo laner starting with you at speed and you follow them and clear the entire jungle to blue buff, however I do not reccomend this start because at best you're going to be giving up a harpy camp to the enemy (if they go for the more direct route)

Or at worst if the midlaner gets ganked early, you're too far away to support them or perform a counter gank.

Option B : The level 2 cringe gank

has an exceptional level 2 gank (AKA, a cringe gank). At level 2, you're going to have your and your both of which have CC attached to them. This means you can choose a very aggressive start where you, clear speed, use HoG on the big harpy camp, and immedietely gank middle lane to get first blood before the enemy midlaner can reach level 2. If done correctly, this will get you both of the mid harpy camps, and first blood for you or the midlaner, a good way to start off your snowball.

Even if you choose not to do the gank in mid, this start allows you to take the right harpy camp for free unless the enemy jungler also went for a similar start. Giving you an immediete, if small, gold and exp lead

NOTE: I would not do this start untill you're atleast somewhat decent at hitting Rata's abilities, this is a high risk high reward start.

How to play Ratatoskr: Early, Mid and Late

Jungle

Remember, practice makes perfect. It will take you time to get comfortable with Ratatoskr's damage, and his kit. You're going to miss abilities, you're going to take unscheduled trips back to the fountain. Just keep at it and you will, in time start to feel more and more comfortable with playing Ratatoskr

Early Game

Play safe: Your first power spike comes once you get your acorn online so focus on farming, you should usually finish your acorn around level 4 or 5 if you're farming well. Ganking without having your acorn finished is quite risky, as hitting your stun can be very hard.
Keep an eye on the Duo and Solo lane: Keep track of if your solo or duo lane is getting pressured, you might be able to do an early gank to help them out.
Use your ultimate constantly, but dont waste it: If your ultimate is up you should be looking for a gank, if it's down you should be farming. Try not to get into a position where you need to ult to escape death. Your ultimate is an incredibly powerful tool and if you're going to use it, you best make sure you can get something out of it.
Where to ult: As you play Rat you'll gradually get more and more familiar with the range of his ultimate, but when you are starting out, you should ult at these locations
- Ganking Duo Lane: Ult at the Gold Fury Pit
- Ganking Mid Lane: Ult at Oracles or Pyromancer
- Ganking Solo Lane: Ult at Fire Giant Pit
Farm to get your Jotunn's online: Jotunn's and your Acorn together is a huge power spike and it's the moment where you really start to feel the power that Ratatoskr can bring. As soon as you can afford it, get it.
Prioritize Neutral Farm: Make sure you are always there for when the mid harpy camps and the oracles spawn, taking neutral farm is the simplest way to get a lead on the enemy jungler.
Keep an eye on the time: You should aim to have your level be at minium, the same as the current minute in game, For example, at 10 minutes in, you should be at minimum level 10. Try to keep ahead of the curve as much as possible. NEVER STOP FARMING
If you are ahead, Invade: If you ahead on time, and most of your camps are on cooldown, you can consider invading the enemy EXP camps or buff camps, to put the enemy behind, altough this can be risky, you should make sure you have your ultimate availble to escape if things turn south

If the enemy jungler dies at any point that is the perfect oppotunity to invade his exp camps before he can respawn.

Mid Game

Prioritize the Mid and Duo lane: Unless the enemy has been ganking your solo laner or they are struggling you should avoid ganking solo and focus your attention on the mid and duo lanes, at this point in the game, the enemy solo laner can probably quite easily turn and fight you if you try to gank, so don't waste your resources trying to kill them.
Gank and take objectives: At this point you want to start trying to gain minor objectives, such as T1 towers, greater scorpions, Gold Fury and Pyromancer, if you've just succeeded in a gank, consider making a call to attack one of these. Just make sure you have a Sentry Ward on them first. Midgame is your home, and you need to do as much as you can now, to make up for the bad late game you're going to have.

Late Game

Everything starts to fall apart: By this point, your likely feeling the pain of Ratatoskr's late game falloff, you're no longer getting tons of kills and 1v1ing everyone. It's here that we find out which Ratatoskr players are excellent, and which are just adequate.
Focus on utility out of fights: You are an excellent split pusher, thanks to your ult you can very quickly join a fight that is going on in the next lane over. You should always try to split push, as soon as an enemy comes over to confront you, you should get ready to ult into your team to fight a 5v4. Focus on split-pushing the duo lane when possible, as it's the furthest lane from fire-giant.
Distract enemies: Because you are very safe with your ultimate, you can distract the enemy team while your team does an objective, such as Fire Giant, split push in Duo lane and try to bait the enemy team into ganking you. and then simply ult to safety, and try to get them to chase you.
Be the last to join a teamfight, and the first to leave it: When a teamfight starts, wait, you dont need to ult immedietely and join in, stay out of vision and wait for the enemy team to use their abilities, for leaps to be burned and CC to be used, then go in and pick a target. Alternatively, use your ult to secure a kill on a target that got away from the main fight.
Hit and Run tactics: If you're really struggling you can try attacking a target twice, Attack them once with your ultimate, and Acorn Blast then Dart away before you can get pinned down and killed, then come back again with Blink and finish the job. Just being behind the enemy gives them a threat they can't avoid and you can try to get one of them to leave the frontline to focus on you

Solo

Early Game

Get Thickbark Acorn ASAP: Pre-Thickbark you cant fight too well against most solo laners as they can out trade you, but once you get it your damage really comes online. So focus on farming and clearing the wave, trying to make sure that as few minions get pushed under tower as possible to maximize the gold you get
Stay Healthy: You want to make sure you stay at a good enough HP to be able to defend your blue buff if needed, the first time blue comes online is the most important time to get it, losing it can hit you really hard as you wont be able to fight at all due to the mana costs of your abilties.
Buy Wards on your first back: You're most vulnerable to ganks at the early game before you have your ultimate, so make full use of your free ward and buy wards whenever you back
Grab Neutral Farm: There is currently a huge amount of farm availible for the solo laners to take, make sure you are constantly grabbing your EXP camp, and taking the enemies camp when possible

Mid Game

Switch to placing more aggressive wards: Assuming you are keeping pace with the enemy solo laner, you want to start looking into proxying the wave and invading the enemy jungle camps. If you get vision on the enemy jungle and they are not near their camps, consider proxying the next wave and invading. However even if you dont know where they are, thanks to your ultimate Through the Cosmos you can proxy and still be very safe from ganks.
Gank middle lane with your ultimate: You have an excellent mid rotation with Ratatoskr, and you should always keep one eye on midlane to see if a fight breaks out that you can join in on,
Keep Farming: As you reach into the midgame and start rotating around the map do not forget to keep farming, keep an eye on the clock and make sure you stay ahead of the curve, if you find yourself falling behind, return to solo lane and take a few waves of exp.

Late Game

Make sure you hit level 20 ASAP: A lot of your damage will come from Bluestone Brooch so make sure that you hit level 20 to get it upgraded as soon as you can.
Remember that you are not as tanky as other warriors: Dont get carried away in a teamfight, you are quite tanky, but you will still fold much faster than other solo laners, so keep an eye on your health and be ready to Dart to safety if needed.
Split Push when you can: Similar to being jungle, you are still an excellent split pusher thanks to your ultimate, so instead of grouping with your team, always be in the next lane over split pushing and be ready to ult into a fight if one starts.

Conclusion

In Summary

Ratatoskr is an excellent jungler, and a great solo laner able to work with a huge variety of different builds and is generally excellent fun. He is consistently ranked around A+ tier on the Smite reddit's community Tier List and in the right hands he can single-handed win the entire early game of a match for you.
