The Morrigan, A Dark Omen. (Updated to Patch 4.2)

February 25, 2017

What's New ? (Patch 3.25)

Hey guys before you read my build this little section will serve as a small feed of what I have been trying to do to enhance The Morrigan's damage potential and/or for all the ideas ideas of new builds I'v gathered ^~^.

So far I'v been concern by a new playstyle for The Morrigan, something more like Ao Kuang, to sum up a magical assassin ! I met few players on smite and chatted with some other experienced players on TeamSpeak, a majority plays The Morrigan with a build that looks something like this :

As a core :

Shoes of Focus + Chronos' Pendant
(Basically Mov Speed/Mana/CDR/Magical Power and all of that in early)

Then for the assassin-like burst down :

Polynomicon + Soul Reaver
(As you see the passive of the two items synergies well for a good burst plus with get that huge mana as a gift so it's great :P)

And finally for the damage (since poly scales on your magical power for the burst) :

Rod of Tahuti + Spear of Desolation
(The penetration could make it possible to burst down tanks perhaps ? But the main point of this item combo is to get a maximum of damage which is why this combo is extremely expensive)

Yup this build is kind of like the current one but less focused on sustain (less lifesteal) and penetration (less penetration obviously) and more focused towards burst damage (the passives and magical power while keeping the CDR) like an assassins would do. Plus I'd like to add that as you will see in my guide The Morrigan is extremely versatile in her playstyle and going for the "stealth and get close" then the "burst him down to death" for finally escape and "let the rest of the enemy chase your decoy" is really effective and so much fun *bad guy in animes evil laugh* !

Welcome to my guide, this build is recommended for Patch 4.2. As of this patch I have been playing mostly Joust (and some Arena/Clash but still more Joust) and most of the games ended with the enemy team surrendering earlyor winning in less than 20 min. So without further ado here's the guide for the first Celtic goddess.

Since no one plays her because they think she's not fixed yet, I could pick her every game. She's a real team fight changer god with her unique kit, the poke she gets from her Dark Omen combined to either Deadly Aspects or most of the time a second Dark Omen is truly devastating ! Then there's Confusion, oh this escape... How many times have they used their attacks/ability on the decoy... And finally that ultimate, enjoying everyone's ultimate ally or enemy for her own.

So here's a build I suggest and is open to improvements (all you got to do is leave a comment with your recommendations I will check regularly ^~^).

Before you dive in the guide enjoy my Top 3 fan-art of The Morrigan :

By Ptimm
By McDobo

This build is still being improved, if you wanna track the improvements check the comment section but we switched to PM recently so we could just post one last comment with our fully improved build"s" (since we are going to make this guide a bit more in-depth ^~^).

Pros / Cons

The Morrigan

........ Pros ........

+ Watching people using their ultimate on your decoy is satisfying

+ A real teamfight changer with her ultimate

+ Low CD and low mana consumption on her abilities
....... Cons .......

- Escape is hard to master as you lose your stealth if you are hit

- Ultimate depends mostly on your knowledge of other gods kit

- Really Squishy early and needs sustainability

With this build you will be focusing on early poke, spamming that ultimate, being as much as possible in teamfights to make use of those passives, burst down tanks with your penetration, enjoy huge damage (wait isn't that evil enough ?) and add in there some sustain so you will never die :).

Items Description

Sands of Time :
The best starter item for The Morrigan, it comes with a little magical power and a useful mana passive but the best perk of this item is the nice and cheap 10% CDR !

Shoes of the Magi :
Every burst mage first item (some go with Shoes of Focus but here we will need these), the best shoes due to the magical power and flat penetration that provides a nice burst damage potential early on !

Spear of Desolation:
Again an enormous amount of magical power and that +20 flat penetration gets you the damage we are trying to reach but still the most attrative stat of this item is the 10% CDR we get and the CDR passive that will come useful more than you think, what can I ask more ?

Chronos' Pendant :
This item finally gets us to the ability-spamming in teamfights we are aiming for *evil laugh*. So basically more magical power and a bit of mana over time but the main job of this item again is to get the maximum of 40% CDR (we want that ultimate as much as possible to be of use !).

Obsidian Shard :
Best magical penetration for objectives and burst mages ! Magical power and penetration with that sweet passive. You will be bursting down objectives and gods !

Rod of Tahuti :
This item, oh well, when you get this item ... You will enjoy bursting down anything. 125 magical power!!! And that passive that will raise your damage to 731.5 total !

Spirit Robe :
Now for the 6th item if you are the kind to jump headlong into teamfights, the magical and physical protection this item gives should help you survive a bit longer and in case you need to escape, the CC reduction and the passive damage mitigation will surely save you. And guess what, 10% more CDR ! Now we still get a total of 40% CDR even when selling Sands of Time.

Mail of Renewal :
But Sometimes you will want a little more health because few gods are hitting a bit too hard for such a frail queen The Morrigan is :P. And the passive that gives you health regen for any kill or assist on enemy gods and objectives feels so good right ? And guess what, 10% more CDR ! Now we still get a total of 40% CDR even when selling Sands of Time.

Pythagorem's Piece :
Still the best lifesteal item there is currently, here's a sustain item, again more magical power for a maximum of damage and 24% lifesteal that will let you regen your health on minions or gods ! (12% magical lifesteal or 10 physical lifesteal is applied to allies within 70 units !). And guess what, 10% more CDR ! Now we still get a total of 40% CDR even when selling Sands of Time.

I will be looking for alternative builds of course and I'm planning on making this page a bit more lifeful with more bb coding in the future ...

Here's why y'all are here for !

Skills Presentation

The 3rd hit of The Morrigan's hit chain will explode, dealing damage to all enemies within range and Dooming all enemies hit. Doomed enemies will take additional Basic Attack damage over time.

1st Ability :

Deadly Aspects
When activated, The Morrigan begins combining the power from all three of her forms. When activated again, they simultaneously damage and stun enemies in front of them.

Deadly Aspects

Max this second as it is our main damage output

2nd Ability :

Dark Omen
The Morrigan launches a wave of dark magic at her enemies that deals damage, deals bonus damage to minions, and applies an Omen to enemy gods for 8 seconds. Gods with an Omen will take bonus damage the next time they are hit by any damaging ability.

Dark Omen

Max this first since you will be spamming it

3rd Ability :

The Morrigan creates a phantom of herself while becoming stealthed and increasing her Movement Speed. The phantom runs to the targeted area, deals no damage, and will die if it takes any damage. If the Morrigan attacks or takes damage, she will be revealed and lose her increased Movement Speed.

Max this last

The Morrigan selects a God from the current match and becomes a copy of them. She copies all of their current stats and may use all of their abilities for the duration. She retains her own Relics and cannot use Consumables.
The Rank of her abilities will transfer to the skills of the god she copies. This ability's cooldown will be increased to match the target God's ultimate if she uses it while transformed.

Level it whenever it can be

To sum up, I could go on for hours about how good she is for a team based playstyle and how amazing and versatile her kit is, she's the kind of god that could fill any role (well have you seen Ymir jungle xD but way more scary) with ease or any situation and any unexpected turns of events. She holds great potential for the juking mechanics of Smite (#JukeNation) and that's also what made me like her so much !

So wanna learn how to play The Morrigan !? Easy ! Or not exactly easy but after reading this you will at least know what you are doing.

The Poke

Since the CD on this is extremely low (every 4 seconds) this is what you are going to use every time its up, trust me you are going to low enemy gods pretty fast in the laning phase.

The Stun

This is literally the one shot combo, usually in case you are chasing someone or a 1v1 situation when it's okay to be close range this combo is most of the time deadly.

The Chase

+ + /

Use the decoy to either get the enemy where you want or to make them think they can safely B because you supposedly left. The movement speeds let's you catch up to him or surprise him then apply your bonus, if he gets away try to take him down long range style with Dark Omen but if he's still near to you just one shot him with Deadly Aspects.

The Suprise

+ +

Leave your decoy somewhere no one would suspect it's a decoy (behind creeps or even use your escape before getting in the enemy eyesight so you would be invisible) and get close enough to be able to use Dark Omen + Deadly Aspects to burst down the enemy and if he gets away finish him with Dark Omen again (the CD is quite low don't worry).

This section needs some more combos or better explication, the basics are there but it can and will be improved soon.

This was a fast made guide and my first as well *dramatic sound*, I really wanted to be the first to make it since The Morrigan is a goddess I've been waiting to play for a long time (to be honest my girlfriend was more excited than me for The Morrigan since she is the real Celtic mythology fan) and I had fun imagining other Smite players reading the guide so I made it easy to read as well (hopefully xD, I'm not a native speaker so I'm ready to get bashed by grammar nazis), I'm also aware I made a lot of parenthesis, hope it wasn't too much ^~^.

Thanks you for reading my guide ! If you find this guide useful let me know with an upvote :3 !

Will be waiting for your comments <3 !
