INTRODUCTION

Welcome to my guide for Hades, King of the Underworld
My name is Big Damage. I am a dedicated Smite fan and spend most of my time playing Ranked Conquest, Ranked Joust and some Assault. In Conquest I mostly enjoy playing Solo and Support, however this build is just for Hades in Solo and Mid.
This is my 3rd SmiteFire guide, and constructive criticism is always welcome. Before I start I would like to add credits to Zilby and Mowen for the templates and notes on how to implement bbcode, this guide would not be possible without it!

Without further ado, onto the guide!

PROS AND CONS

Pros:
  • Strong early lane clear
  • Sustain in lane
  • Hard CC
  • Easy mobility
  • Very "snowbally"
Cons:
  • Close quarters mage
  • Easily locked down without beads
  • Damage falls off late game
  • Relies on lifesteal
  • Only range in Auto Attacks

WHAT TO BUY, WHY AND WHEN

In this section I will go over what items are strong on Hades, why they are useful and when to purchase them

Item 1
Bancroft's Talon

Too good to be passed up on Hades, this gives him the mana, power and lifesteal he needs to sustain in lane, especially Solo. If you have several minions applied with Blight and hit them with your Devour Souls combined with Bancroft's Talon you can easily regain hundreds of HP. You should always pick this up 1st or 2nd to get the most benefit out of it.
Item 2
Mantle of Discord

Because of Hades need to dive in to do damage and then get back out, in any role you wish to play him Mantle of Discord gives you the safety you need and also pairs nicely with your ultimate, Pillar of Agony. If you get locked down before you can escape, the silence and CC immunity from the Mantle of Discord passive can give you that moment to escape. Another way it works for Hades is that when you are ulting you gain bonus protections and damage mitigations for the duration making you harder to kill and on top of that if you are low on health, the silence can help prevent people from getting abilities such as a leap off to escape or an ult to cause damage. However due to the steep price and need for other items for Hades to be relevant it is recommended to purchase this later in a build anywhere from the 4th item onwards.
Item 3
Breastplate of Valor

Specifically for the Solo lane, this is a common item in general, and with good reason. Cooldown reduction, mana sustain, physical protections are all very useful in Solo, it can also be picked up in the mid lane if you are having problems with the enemy jungler or rotations from the enemy solo/ADC however it is very niche. Typically in Solo Breastplate of Valor should be picked up earlier on to get the most use out of it against the enemy they are laning, but in mid it is seen as a pick up to take whenever you feel it necessary.
Item 4
Charon's Coin

Charon's Coin is a strange item, however the stats are very appreciated on Hades. The HP5 and movement speed once fully stacked are nice for getting out of a fight after you've gone in and dumped your kit, along with high power, MP5 and 20% magical penetration you have the stats to help secure the kills when you get out and still be alive to get back out. Because of the need to stack it to evolve the passive buying this sooner is better, however similar to Mantle of Discord the need for other items to help stay relevant should put this item around 3rd or 4th and onwards.

ABILITIES AND COMBOS

Passive - Blight
The key component in what makes the mediocre abilities of Hades more of a hassle to deal with in the laning phase. Applying Blight will reduce the enemies (and minions) physical or magical power by 5%, which in itself is not overpowered, but nice. The real deal is the effects that it gives to each abilities which I will cover with said abilities below. The best tactic for using this passive is to apply from range with your auto attacks, and then follow up with the abilities that also apply blight before using the ones that remove blight which will also be covered lightly in the combos.

1 - Death from Below
As the name suggests, although classed as a "leap" (which I will add can be taken advantage of by Awilix ult), will bring you up through the ground dealing AOE damage to nearby targets. If the enemy is already applied by blight, which would by through your auto attacks or your 2 the enemy will be slowed, however whether the enemy is already blighted or not this will apply blight again allowing you to get the extra ability effects again. This should only be used for initiation or securing a kill if you think that you can also get back out without it, otherwise save it as an escape.

2 - Shroud of Darkness
The notorious CC that Hades holds in his kit, silencing in a similar cone to the Athena taunt, this will also apply blight similarly to Death From Below but also the unique effect that it gives when an enemy is blighted is that they are feared instead, forcing them to run in a direction. At max rank this ability lasts 2 seconds so the potential for setting up kills or burning beads is extremely potent with blight and this CC. It can be used when attacking to initiate, or defensively if an enemy is getting too close and you need to silence/fear them from using abilities.

3 - Devour Souls
Without the appliance of Blight I must admit that this ability is almost useless, however with the ease of applying Blight it is definitely far from useless. When nearby enemies are blighted Devour Souls will detonate the Blight applied and deal extra damage while also healing you per target. For best results in lane, try to blight the enemy laner but also the minion wave and detonate it all together with Devour Souls and you will get more damage off than expected.

4 / Ultimate - Pillar of Agony
If you can catch someone in this ultimate and they don't have a Purification Beads or an Aegis Amulet they are in trouble, dealing high damage every half a second for 6 seconds, and not being able to walk out so that you are a target is not a good time, and to top it off if the enemy is blighted their magical protections are reduced for the duration of the ability. To help protect Hades from being too easy of a target while he is in there he gains 160 dual protections and 10% damage mitigation for the duration and is granted CC immunity.

Combos

This is your standard ability damage combo, the Death From Below isn't necessary unless you need to close the distance that way but following the 2 up with the 3 is always the way to go without ulting. Be careful though as using Death From Below to attack leaves you without an escape.

Here you will apply Blight with Death From Below, then while they are blighted apply Shroud of Darkness causing them to be feared for 2 seconds, then in range you can now ult them, reducing their protections due to Blight and guaranteeing damage output due to them being feared, if they are still alive or inside range let off your Devour Souls to do one final burst of damage to secure the kill. Do not use Devour Souls before Pillar of Agony as this will remove the Blight and not reduce their protections for the duration of Pillar of Agony.

The full combo utilising all abilities the most efficiently, and being able to chase kills if they manage to escape your Pillar of Agony. Although needing to use Blink Rune to complete, you still get all the benefits from the previous combo while still having escape/chase potential. If you feel the need to escape instead of chasing a kill you should use Devour Souls before using Death From Below to escape to try snag a heal and extra damage.

GAMEPLAY AND TEAMPLAY

This part of the guide will cover what to do at different stages of a Conquest match, and how you should play as part of a team to win the game

Early Game / Laning Phase
This is where Hades really shines in Solo, but not so much in mid. In Solo you will be able to out clear the enemy every time with some exceptions (such as Jormungandr or Bellona) use this pressure to secure totem of ku, invade their blue and try get some kills to snowball to the midgame. In the midlane however needing to be close to the wave to clear at level 1-3 can be tedious and dangerous, however after that you should be safe to clear waves fast and start rotating to nearby xp camps.

Mid Game / "Skirmish" Fighting
If Hades has done well in the early game, he will be more than fine in the midgame. For the Solo lane you should be looking to start making more rotations to the mid and using your CC, power and level lead to win some fights for your team so they can take Gold Fury or a mid tower. For the mid lane it is similar, you should be sticking with your Support and trying to farm as much xp as possible however when it comes to skirmish fights you are at your strongest at this point so use it to your advantage to try and gain a lead via the Gold Fury or ganking the ADC lane.

Late Game / Teamfighting
At this point, Hades damage really falls off, however his CC is still strong so try to transition into being one of the initiators with your Pillar of Agony to set kills up for the Jungler and ADC. This works both ways whether you are in Solo or Mid lane so try to win team fights and go for objectives such as Oni and Primal Fury and Fire Giant to help push the Phoenixes and the Titan.

CONCLUSION // SUMMARY

Hades has always been one of my favourite gods and although he's not in a great spot in the current meta you can still have plenty of fun with him and be a force to be reckoned with, I hope this build was useful, thank you for reading!

For the (bancrofts start) mid build, why not consider Typhon's and Reaver for your main percentage pen? Swapping Charon's for Typhon's, Tahuti for Reaver and sell boots for shard or pythags?

I'll be honest, I haven't played much with Hades in the midlane since Season 7 and have only tested similar builds to how I played him in Season 6, my only thought process behind the lack of extra lifesteal items is not getting any MP5 in the build, and at the moment I think Rod of Tahuti does a lot more damage than Soul Reaver. The extra lifesteal items I will have to look into building and testing though, best of both worlds I'll end up adding a third build for more lifesteal similar to how you have described.
