Janus, The 2-Faced Bastard [S5]
July 8, 2018
Pros and Cons
Can teleport the entire Team
Longest ultimate in the game
Can snipe enemies across the map
Can go through walls
Makes abilities deal more damage than usual. If you want to activate it use Threshold
. Save Portal
for something else unless necessary.
Use this to help allies escape through walls, set up kills, or escape. This skill is like Freya
. This means if you place the Portal
on the ground and go through it while someone tries to deal damage to you, it would be avoided. This takes timing and practice of course.
For example Poseidon
's ultimate Release The Kraken!
is easy to predict. You'll hear
RELEASE, THE KRAKEN!"
. When you hear that 'K' his ultimate will hit. He will usually use it with Whirlpool
. As soon as you hear the 'THE' end place a portal below you. It takes time for the portal to be placed and you to get in it. As Hi-Rez has said before, every ultimate ability has a sound effect that will allow you to predict what will happen.
This is your wave clear and main source of damage. Its easy to miss due to it's curvature. Try to get both energy balls to hit the target. It'll deal a lot more damage. When aiming for a moving target, keep in mind that Unstable Vortex
is relatively slow. Always account for speed and distance. If hitting a minion wave ahead of you fire the ability when the minions are roughly 1.5 Khepri
es away. Late game this has the potential to wipe out half of an enemy god's health.
Use this to slow enemy gods or buff yourself to activate Passages
. It'll make your abilities easier to hit in addition to dealing more damage. Also useful for escaping with your team and making lane minions go faster. Use this to activate your passive so you can save Portal
for another day.
Through Space and Time
Deals a lot of damage from quite a far distance. Aiming and timing is hard. Use this to get your entire team across the entire map. Or, save an ally who's being chased by the enemy team. Beware though, there's a 1 second delay before the ultimate is fired.
Another use for this is ganking another lane to help out. Try to aim for the enemy god. IF you didn't hit him/her, that's fine. Why? The damage was just one part of why you did it; teleporting over there to help secure a kill therefore putting that said teammate slightly ahead is another part to the equation.
This starter item was built for mages, and works well for them. Helps with Janus
' mana problems. The CDR is also quite useful. Gets replaced by Bancroft's Talon
or Book of the Dead
A bit of mana early game. Will have to do until you get Book of Thoth
Book of Thoth/Warlock's Staff and Shoes
Book of Thoth
Gives 875 mana in total, the most any item can give. If you use your abilities wisely you probably won't run out of mana late game. At full stacks at lvl 20 it gives 172 magical power in total.
Due to a recent shift in the meta, Warlock's Staff
is now equal to or perhaps stronger than Book of Thoth
. Warlock's Staff
provides a very large amount of health and mana which aids in dealing with the fact that mages aren't tough. The magical power is quite a lot as well. At full stacks it provides, 500 health, 400 mana, and 115 magical power.
Shoes of the Magi
I prefer this over Shoes of Focus
initially because the penetration is great early game for the damage. After you complete the build, sell this for Shoes of Focus
. This is because the trade-off obtained by selling Shoes of the Magi
for Shoes of Focus
late game is amazing. 10% CDR for 10 penetration.
Shoes of Focus
and also be purchased first, because the mana is great for sustain and the CDR is quite valuable throughout the game.
More lifesteal the lower your health gets. Always get this unless you're fed and ahead. Useful for extended team fights.
Slightly cheaper than Bancroft's Talon
. Provides a healthy dose of lifesteal and health, along with cooldown reduction. I'd buy this if I'm getting ganked a lot, due to the extra health and lifesteal. The CDR also allows you to use your abilities more often.
Currently favoured by professional mid laners, Soul Gem
rewards you for landing your abilities on enemy gods with an instant heal after landing several. To give you an idea of how much the passive heals for, using the example build the healing wave will heal for approximately l70 health. The CDR helps.
4th and 6th Items
Percentage pen. You'll notice you'll start to deal more damage due to the penetration.
Rod of Tahuti
The ultimate power item. Sell mages blessing for this late game. Once you get this your damage will go up, but not as much as it used to after its major nerf. Right now there are some alternatives.
Spear of Desolation
Gives a decent amount of magical power, a lot of penetration, and cooldown reduction. Everything a Mage would want.
Good amount of power, MP5, and 20% cooldown reduction. Although more expensive than Spear of Desolation
you can still get it. Buy it if you want to provide utility to your team more often than dealing damage.
Useful for enemy teams with high CC. Always get this against Hades
, who sometimes manages to make it past the bans.
Useful against high burst mages, such as Poseidon
You should only get this if there's an Odin
, due to his Ring of Spears
. Remember, Phantom Veil
has a longer cooldown than his Ring of Spears
so use it wisely
Healing Potions and Mana Potions
Buy this early game for longer sustain in lane.
Potion of Magical Might
Buy this only when you've finished your build. Use conservatively.
Always buy these when going back to the fountain. Ward on your left and right. Especially if the enemy jungler is Thanatos
you probably won't survive without wards early game.
Place this on objectives like the Fire Giant
You might want to go over Threshold
first to activate your passive. Place a Portal
on a spot where you think the enemy will step into. When they fall back down from the portal use Unstable Vortex
on them, but wait for the delay
. Try to get both energy balls hit.
Please inform me if this section is out of date, as the early game stages influenced by the meta change three times faster than Earth's seasons.
You should always leave base before the first wave of minions spawn. At level 2 after activating your passive through Portal
, Unstable Vortex
should deal around 35% of the enemy Mid Laner's health. Sometimes, your jungler may want to play aggressive. If so, try to adopt to his/her play style. DO NOT FORGET TO WARD
After leaving base head to the Speed
camps with your jungler. I don't recommend using any abilities to help, as the jungler has got it all handled. After 'laning' for a while the jungler will rotate to the duo lane side. The jungler will then clear Damage
camps. When it arrives clear the damage camp with him.
This is when Mid Laners like Hades
begin to blossom. Be careful of ganks from the enemy jungler. Counting to buy wards. Don't forget to look left and right. Why? If your Duo Laners or Solo Laner has weakened the enemy to low health, a well-aimed and well timed Through Space and Time
will finish them off. At around 20% health is when they can be instantly killed. Quite satisfying.
If the enemy Mid Laner exits lane call MIA. If the enemy tower is at low health and they rotate take the chance at finish it off. With the help of minions of course. If the tower is at high health you can either choose to damage it more or help your allies.
Sometime, your teammates may want to secure objects and may need your help. You should go help them unless the enemy Mid Laner is putting pressure in your lane.
Place a Sentry Ward
on the Fire Giant
if someone hasn't already done it. By now, your team should have a few towers down. If there are remaining towers or weak pheonixs group up to push the remaining towers/phoenixs.
If the enemy Titan is weak tell your teammates to group up. Use Through Space and Time
and aim it at the enemy Titan. You should've traveled more than half the map. Ward behind you to warn you of anybody. There may be some players defending. Ward on the lanes as well so you can see if anyone is trying to backdoor the Titan.
Map for Warding
Ward North-East and North-West of your T2 Tower for early to mid game. This is to prevent early ganks, which can easily put you behind. Later in the game ward the Fire Giant if no one else has done it yet.
Thanks to Kriega1 for help with this guide!
Well, this is the end of the guide. I will update it as often as I can. In the "Builds Used By Pros" section, please be aware that what may be viable in the SPL wouldn't necessarily be viable in normal ranked conquest. Feedback is appreciated.
