Introduction

Probably the most underrated God in the game. Everyone says Hades can`t do enough damage and that it can`t be played to it`s real value.

Well, I`m here to prove them wrong!

Hades was my first choice once I saved enough favor points to buy a new God. And I`m glad I chose him. It delivers tons of fun when played with good team-mates and oftentimes him alone is the reason for rage-quitting and early surrender votes.

God Change Log

Beta Version 0.1.1069_0 - 20 September 2012

Devour Souls - Removed the delay between hitting and the detonation of blighted enemies.
Base damage increased from 50/75/100/125/150 to 75/110/145/180/215 (this will increase Hades`s power against minions early-game)

Beta Version 0.1.997 - 03 August 2012
Death From Below - Base damage increased from 30/50/70/90/110 to 50/90/130/170/210. (a much needed buff that put Hades back on the map)
Devour Souls - Fixed an issue that was causing the damage from Blighted enemies to be reduced based on the distance from the explosion.

Beta Version 0.1.975_1 - 20 July 2012
Slight tweaks to FX on the Soultaker skin.

Beta Version 0.1.944_1 - 29 June 2012
Magical protection now increases .9 per level, as intended.

Pros and Cons

Pros:
+ Easy to play
+ Viciously amusing against inexperienced players.
+ Ultimate that can CC all 5 players at a time with good damage output.
+ Blight is something hard to master but rewarding

Cons:
- Painfully slow
- Basic attack does little to no damage most of the game
- When Pillar of Agony is on cool-down, there`s little Hades can do against a full-health opponent.
- Depends allot on good team-mates and lane partners.

Ability Explanation

Blight

.
Blight is Hades`s Passive ability and it can be a game-changer.

In a nut shell, if the enemy is Blighted, every ability that Hades calls upon that target will have additional results. It is activated / applied by either a successful basic attack or Death From Below and it lasts for 5 seconds (it can be refreshed at any moment). Do read about each ability`s Blight bonus because I`ll try to explain it`s usefulness throughout this guide.

Death from Bellow

Cooldown: 12 seconds
Mana: 50/55/60/65/70
.
Death From Below is a blink / teleport ability.

Hades descends into the ground and erupts from below at his ground location, doing 50/90/130/170/210 (+70% of your magical power) magical damage to all enemies in the area. If the enemy is Blighted, they are also slowed by 25/30/35/40/45% for 2 seconds. Applies Blight.

For the slow effect from Blight to actually apply, you need to first hit your target with a basic attack. It is a common good practice to stack cool-down reduction items (max.25%) and spam Death From Below on enemies that barely escaped the full force of your Ulti because it will also slow them for 2 seconds.

A good exploit is to use this ability to teleport into and from buff camps when being chased by an enemy.

I play Hades with this ability being leveled-up first(by the time I get to Level 8).

Shroud of Darkness

Cooldown: 15/14/13/12/11
Mana: 80
.
Shroud of Darkness is a silence / fear ability.

Hades silences all enemies in a cone in front of him for 1/1.25/1.5/1.75/2 seconds. If the enemy is Blighted, they are also feared. Consumes Blight.

This ability is best used on a Blighted enemy to actually take advantage of the FEAR effect. It is better to auto-attack your target and then cast Shroud of Darkness upon a chasing enemy, instead of running away like a coward. It can also buy your allies time to catch up on fleeing enemies.

1 second of silence/fear is more than enough to scare the sh*t out of most chasing enemies and .25 for every level-up is no game-changer.

I put a point in this ability at level 3 and upgrade it last.

Devour Souls

Cooldown: 15/14/13/12/11
Mana: 65/75/85/95/105
.
Devour Souls is a spark ability.

Hades devours the souls of his enemies in a radius around him, doing 50/75/100/125/150 (+60% of your magical power) magical damage. If the enemy is Blighted, the enemy explodes doing up to 20 damage to nearby enemies and healing your allies for 30/40/50/60/70 within 20 feet of the exploding target. Consumes Blight.

This third ability is good for siphoning minions in late-game and dealing a little more damage to those who are trying to escape a team-fight.

The Blight effect is somewhat useless until you need a bit of healing.

The best way to fend off a chasing enemy (in late-game) is to run towards a wave of enemy minions, Death From Below into them and then hit Devour Souls. The blighted minions will explode doing damage to surrounding units, at the same time healing you for the appropriate level and number of exploded targets.

I put a point in it at level 2 and maximize it second.

Pillar of Agony

Cooldown: 90
Mana: 100
.
Pillar of Agony is Hades`s Ultimate ability and it`s a 4 seconds channeling type. It can be canceled at any time with a right click.

Hades calls to all enemy souls nearby, pulling them closer to him over time, doing 50/65/80/95/110 (+35% of your magical power) magical damage every .5 seconds for 4 seconds, additionally gaining 40/50/60/70/80 protection to all damage. If the enemy Blighted, their protections are reduced by 10/15/20/25/30. Consumes Blight.

And with this ability Hades earns his stripes.

It is a very powerful ultimate ability but way to easy to counter. It requires good planing and hawk-eye attention.

The best practice is to Death From Below into a group, then Shroud of Darkness to silence them (fear, if Blight is active). Proceed with Pillar of Agony, and if your team didn`t manage to kick the **** out of everybody, then you can activate Devour Souls for that swift Kill Steal.

An effective Pillar of Agony with this build at level 20 can deliver 880 + ~ 1200 pure magic damage. But many foes have at least 35-45% magic damage protection so you`re looking to something around 1100-1300 damage over 4 seconds. Think really hard about this next time when you`re rushing into battle without backup, because if your Ultimate is down ... so are you.

I upgrade it every time I get the chance.

Items

I got the item order from MisterShizno and then I tried other combinations based on different situations.

The build order is pretty simple and the idea behind it is to have enough power at any given time to swoop in and get the kill.

Core Items

reinforced boots
I start with Reinforced Boots lvl.2 and 3x Healing Potion - A good mix of physical and magical protection can go a long way against most of lane enemies combinations.

I often chose not to upgrade the boots, and go straight for LVL 3 Void Stone - this way I increase my magical protection (good against magic damage gods), increase my magic power and lastly decrease the magical protection of all enemies trapped by my Pillar of Agony.

The third item is often Stone of Gaia due to it`s +70 Magical Protection and health regen. This will make you a tough cookie against a Magic Damage Team. Alternatively (against a Physical Damage Team) one can select Hide of the Nemean Lion for it`s Physical Protection and the 25% physical damage returned to the attacker. Good especially when focused by enemies during Pillar of Agony.

Most of the times I forget about LVL 3 reinforced boots and go on towards my 4th item. In all honesty I can`t say that getting the last level of boots gives me any advantage. For my style of play I can survive with lvl 2 boots until I get my 6th item all leveled up.

I`m not saying it`s a good idea, I`m just saying : It works for me!

Items - Damage

By this time (if played right) the player should have at least 3-5 kills (no deaths) and at least the same amount of assists.

Let the steamrolling begin!

The forth item is Book of Thoth - it gives a hefty amount of magical power (+100) without any strings attached. And the health regen might come in handy during unsuccessful gank attempts.

The fifth item is kind of a no-brainer: Rod of Tahuti - And after acquiring this item there`s usually a "an enemy has left the game" message or a surrender vote. It comes at a price but what a good piece of equipment it is. + 125 Magical Power , health regen and ot top of everything, scales constantly the total Magical Power by + 25%

Items - Late Game

If (by any chance) the enemy team holds it`s ground and I find myself focused often, I strap on magi's blessing for it`s magical protection and it`s ability to withstand one enemy ability every 1 minute. Imagine yourself shot by a well fed Ra`s Searing Pain (1100+ rail shot), and you`re not even scratched. Now that I call demoralizing, to say the least.

If, instead, I`m in the fortunate position to pile on DPS, I`ll usually go for Obsidian Shard - more Magical Power = more DPS, and more Magical Penetration = squshier targets. Why, yes sir, I`ll have one of those ... please!

Items that I don`t use, and WHY...

I don`t use Doom Orb because, try as I may, I still kick the bucket at least a couple of times in a whole match. It does give a total of 160 Magic Power when fully stacked ... aaaand it`s gone! I do hate it when I die, but I do hate it more when I die for stupid reasons and I lose all my Doom Orb stacks.

I would use Doom Orb only when going super-tank.
reinforced boots

mystical mark
mystical mark might seem like a good idea in the early stages of the game to harass your melee opponents but it doesn`t scale at all and the 30 points of damage every second will seem very little after LVL 5.

Gameplay - Tips and Tricks

Rule #1. Lane with someone

Hades is a decent mid-lane earner but he truly shines on a side lane.
Combine that with a good partner and you`ll be unstoppable.

Rule #2. Be smart

Never teleport in the middle of 4-5 enemies with full health. It`s just not going to do much to the developing of the game.

a) 8/10 times the rest of the team won`t know you actually initialized the battle and you`ll be focused and killed in no time.

b) Even at full power the Ulti will rarely do more than 1000 damage in 4 seconds so the best case scenario, they still have enough health to either bail, or unleash every piece of arsenal they have at their disposal.

c) Most of the Gods in Smite have some sort of "blink" ability. Make sure at least 2/5 used those before leaping into battle.

d) If they have beads make sure to tell one of your team-mates ( Cupid, Anubis) to flush those out before your Ulti goes into action.

Rule #3: Ability Sequence

Start with death from bellow to do a fair amount of damage and to apply Blight.

Continue with Shroud of Darkness to keep him next to you until you engage Devour Souls.

Most of the times this is the moment when you flush out the blink ability of your opponent or his Purification Beads so don`t waste your Pillar of Agony just yet.

If your opponent doesn`t try to escape, it means he can`t, so this is the moment to hit him with your Pillar of Agony and put him out of his misery.

If he still has a sliver of life left, Death From Below should be up in a couple of seconds, and he`s history!

Gameplay - Tactics

Hades is the type of God that can burst a fair amount of damage to the entire enemy team. His major weakness is also his strength: he`s a nuke, and then he waits his turn.

Early game:

"Sit low, drive slow"

Nothing that Hades does in the first 5 levels of the game is going to actually do considerable amount of damage so be sure to sit back, kill your share of the minions and pay attention to any enemy over-extending.

If the situation arises and an enemy is low on health, charge with Death From Below and finish the kill with Devour Souls.

Mid game:

After the 4th item is in your possession, it`s time to really steamroll`em.

Make sure the blink abilities of your targets have been flushed out and keep ganking like crazy.

Never swoop in on a full health enemy! It`s almost never a good idea!

Keep in mind that your absolute full burst supercalifragilistic nuke combo(1->3->4) will do (best case scenario) 1600-1800 damage if the enemy stacks magic resist items.

Late game:

If you played your cards right by the end of a good game you should have 16-24 kills, hopefully no deaths and a ton of assists.

All you have to do now is "gotta catch`em all".

Change to a more jungle type of approach and take your enemies by surprise.
Travel in packs of at least 2-3 to benefit from allied auras and heals.

You`ll do an outrageous amount of damage to ALL your opponents, and if your team-mates are any good you`ll win every match.

DISCLAIMER:
If your allies feed like crazy in the first 6-8 minutes, Hades won`t be able to keep up with the enemies and the match is lost by default.

Laning Choices

Good Lane Partners

I`m sure Hades can be a good jungler but if you really want to make grown men cry, try playing on the same lane with one of these guys:

Zeus - His Lightning Storm is perfect in combination with Pillar of Agony
Ymir - His Shards of Ice go well with Hades`s ultimate.
Anubis - Grasping Hands and Death Gaze make a mad combo.
He Bo (played well) - Water Cannon and Crushing Wave are OP.
Bakasura - Regurgitate 5 archers and it`s game over.
Sun Wukong - year of the monkey to flush out Purification Beads
Odin - If played right it can be a beast, especially end game when one of you will flush out purification beads and jumping abilities.

Bad Lane Partners

There are a lot of players that make some Gods look pathetic next to Hades. There is no chemistry. The list is meant as a "heads up".

Thor - No CC, little damage towars mid-end game and besides his ultimate, no escape abilities.
He Bo (played like ****) - Waterspout takes the enemy out of my Ulti.
Odin - Most of the times PUGs will always have an under-powered Odin but once in a while you will get one hell of a partner that will rip to pieces the whole team in 10 seconds.

Special Builds

Right now I`m testing out different builds for Hades. Some are plain crazy, some might turn out to be game-changers.

Build #2 - The Leech King

This build is focused mainly on life-steal and sustainability. It`s major advantage is that the life-steal buffs allow the player to dive into battles and surprise his enemies when they least expect it.

It`s an awesome build once you`re at LVL 15+ but it`s painfully slow to get there.

It`s main disadvantage is the lack of any boots. Hades is slow by default but not having boots emphases that flaw.

Pros:
+ Magic Power from LVL 1
+ Lifesteal from LVL 1
+ Fun to dive and surprise enemies.
+ Sustainable.

Cons:
- Slow
- Squishy in the first 10 minutes. (needs careful planning, and forget over-extending)
- You can`t run! (this build is made for fighting, there`s not enough speed to run for your life)

Build #3 - Gunslinger

This build takes advantage of a slow start that doesn`t necessarily make use of boots and emphasize on great use of cool-down reduction.

The choice of Chronos' Pendant it's an obvious one for the 20% cooldown reduction. This will greatly improve harassing on lane and ganking.

Build #3.1 - Quickdraw

reinforced boots - For the physical / magical protection combo and the crowd-control reduction time.
Void Stone - Power + Protection + Magic Protection Reduction
Rod of Tahuti + Book of Thoth + Obsidian Shard = Power + Magic Penetration = DPS

Build #3.2 - I click BOOM!

reinforced boots - For the physical / magical protection combo and the crowd-control reduction time.
warlock's Sash - For Magical Power + Health + Mana (instead of protection)
Rod of Tahuti + Book of Thoth + Obsidian Shard = Power + Magic Penetration = DPS

Summary

Play smart and you`ll love this God. It has offered me tons of fun since day 1 and I haven`t found another God to suit me as good as Hades has, so far.

If there are any aspects of this guide that I have overlooked, please mention them in the comment section and I`ll do my best to enhance them.

Thank you for your patience and I hope to meet you in the arena.

Strange, I generally do the opposite of rule 2. I usually go in with 1, 3, ult. Although teammates are usually there to help. Good guide btw.

Great guide! Wicked results when playing mid+void stone and also great results with a GOOD laining partner in duo. Like you say in the guide, if your laining partner sucks you both will most likely fail.

I also think you are getting down votes from people surrendering games mainley because of hades. The #1 Hades build on smitefire is a troll guide with zero content...

Good guide, feels solid. Great idea to start off Void Stone since it totally shuts down your magical lane opponent's harass and the item works great towards late game combined with Hades' "up-in-your-face" gameplay. +1
