Hey guys,

Today, we have a few announcements to make in regards to changes we are implementing for user roles, users who are - finally - being promoted and some upcoming events. Let's get to it!

Role Changes

As of today, SMITEFire members will no longer be promoted to Editor. Instead, it is now a role which users can apply for if they'd like to help us keep the database up to date.
  • Why this change?
Over the years, the Editor role has served two clear purposes on SMITEFire. One, it functioned as a bridge between being a User and a Veteran, allowing us to reward users who we felt were contributing to our community in a positive way by means of a promotion. Two, the editing tools which were unlocked allowed you guys to help us out keeping the database up to date, and I'm happy to report that many of you have invested time and effort into doing so.

While we're happy about how the role has functioned on our site, there are also a few issues which have been brought to our attention over time. Firstly, granting users access to the database makes the role seem more important than Veteran, which does not unlock any additional tools. Also, several Editors have expressed in the past that being granted these new tools carried the implication that they had to use them to help us out, which was not our intention and detracts from the feeling of the promotion being purely a reward.

With the addition of a dedicated Community Manager last November (in case you missed the memo, that's me), we feel like this is a good moment to move the role of Editor to where it belongs, as a stand-alone role which exists only for those who volunteer to help out. While the gap between being a User and a Veteran may prove to be too big without a rank in between to fill the void (I'll get back to this later), we believe Editor should not be the role to fill that slot.

We also believe this change will have a positive influence on the activity/dedication of our future Editors, even if it leads to us ultimately having less Editors than we did before.
  • Will I still be an Editor if I had the rank before this change was made?
No. As part of the update, the Editor rank has also been removed from all members who previously had the role assigned to their account (except for Moderators and Administrators). If you were previously an Editor and would like to regain the status, please refer to the next question.
  • How do I apply to become an Editor (again)?
In order to apply for the position of Editor, simply send me a PM with a short description on why you'd like to be an Editor (if you were an Editor before, the description part is optional).
  • Are there any minimum requirements for users who want to apply?
While there are no set requirements (in regards to a user's rank or their +Rep count, etc.) in order to apply for the role of Editor, users who apply will only be granted database access if they are in good standing and have been active on the site for a prolonged period of time.
  • If I get accepted, how often do I need to edit something to remain an Editor?
At least 0 times a week :) Ultimately, the responsibility of updating the database lies with myself and the other Administrators; our intent is also not to turn updating the database into a race. As such, we will not be setting any minimum activity requirements for users once they become an Editor.

User Progression

This section describes a few additional changes which are meant to provide our users with a sense of pride and accomplishment reward users for their contributions to the site and should motivate new users to keep up the good work as they work towards attaining the Veteran status.

New Achievements!
Up until now, our achievement system has been used almost exclusively to award the winners of guide contests held on SMITEFire. While we will continue to create new badges for winners of future contests, we also believe there is a bit more room for creativity here, and as such we will be adding other achievements in the near future. The first two achievements to be added will be called "Altruistic Artist" (icon left) and "Guide Critic".

As the names suggest, these two achievements will be granted to artists who have invested time into making signatures/guide banners for others, and to users who have spent a lot of time and effort reviewing other users' guides. On top of these two achievements (which will be awarded to users within the next couple of days), we're also working on a system which will allow us to automatically award users an achievement upon hitting - for example - certain thresholds for posts or database edits (example icon right).

+Rep
New +Rep titles & thresholds!
Along with the addition of new achievements, we've also reviewed the +Rep system in its current state. In doing so, we quickly determined that the titles used were outdated and the thresholds which needed to be met to gain those titles were never adjusted to reflect the size of SMITEFire's community (relative to MOBAFire, for which the system was originally designed).

Both of these issues have now been tackled: previously, users had access to 7 different titles while having anywhere between 1 and 2500 +Rep, now they have access to 13 titles in total which are spread over values ranging from 1 to 500 +Rep (with the first 8 of those being unlocked within the first 100 +Rep you gain). Unfortunately, this update was executed in two steps, meaning some users may have seen an incorrect +Rep title in the last few weeks; on the bright side, this means that if your title has changed since you last checked it, that means it went up (at least once)! :)

New Rank?
While working on these changes, we also discussed the possibility of adding a new (vanity) rank in between User and Veteran. We believe this is not strictly necessary for the time being, but will continue to monitor how the changes announced in this thread contribute to the overall sense of user progression, and will revisit this decision at a later date if necessary. As always, feedback on this subject is greatly appreciated.
?

Promotions

Right, with all that said, it's time for a few promotions. If you haven't been paying attention so far, this is the part where you'll notice that there are no promotions to Editor this time around (or anytime soon, for that matter). If that surprises you, make sure to read the first section of this post again :)

Despite all that, there are still two (former) Editors as well as two "yellow plebs" for which we felt a promotion to Veteran was long overdue, so please join me in congratulating them all on their newly acquired rank!

Miscellaneous
  • Fixed the CSS of quote blocks in blog posts and personal messages
  • Added the creation of a new blog to the Recent Discussion feed on the front page (blog authors no longer need to comment for others to see that a new blog has been created)

Upcoming Events
  • Season 5 Guide Contest: Just like in years before, we will commemorate the start of a new SMITE season by holding a site-wide guide contest! S5's contest will be held shortly after the season starts (which is near the end of the current month); we expect more details on this to follow soon™.

  • Community Spotlight: The start of the year also marks the revival of an idea which some of the older community members among you might remember hearing about before (although unfortunately, it never got rolling back in the day).

From now on, at the end of each month, we will be posting an interview with one of our core community members, in which you guys can ask them anything about (their time on) the site, SMITE or their personal lives (before any asks: Yes, you are allowed to ask virtually anything you want. No, whoever is being interviewed is not obligated to answer every question). From February onwards, the process of creating these interviews will go something like this (exact dates may vary):

    • 1st of the month: Thread is created to nominate members to be interviewed (stays open up to and including the 5th of the month).
    • 6th of the month: Voting poll is created to decide between all nominated members (voting stays open up to and including the 10th of the month).
    • 11th of the month: Thread is created in which the winner of the poll is announced and questions can be asked for that member to answer; note that initially, every interview will consist of approximately 5 questions per "section" (member's time on SMITEFire, their experience playing SMITE and their personal life), depending on the depth of the individual questions / length of the answers. This format might change (slightly) over time based on community feedback. Thread stays open up to and including the 17th of the month.
    • 18th of the month - end of the month: Chosen member has time to answer questions (which I will send to him/her via PM). Once done, a news post will be created to share their answers with the rest of the world (note that even if someone answers all questions immediately, the results will not be published until the end of the month).

There will be at least 6 of these interviews this year (January - June); after the first 6 interviews, we will get back to you guys to discuss whether everyone is still enjoying reading the interviews and work on creating more if so.
Since it is already the 12th of January, we will skip the usual nomination and voting process this time around and instead pick a strong candidate ourselves :) This month's interview will feature one of SMITEFire's most influential members of all time, who has worked his way through the ranks and currently has the highest Reputation score on the entire site: Branmuffin17!

That's all for now, make sure to leave your thoughts in the comments below! :)

My name is green, my name is green!

Ha, I remember when I said that Bran's Rep was almost higher than Zilby's. Also, when/how do we submit our questions?

Great work, Wayne!

EDIT: Congratulations, everyone!

Oh, I'll have to make some of those Gramm-pol signatures again because of the rank changes.

Is it sad that I can’t think of any questions to ask Bran. Congrats the lucky four individuals that got promoted all four of you deserved it. Shine On!

I just want to let everyone to know about my situation on this site. I'm not given up on this site the reason due to lack of activity is because is the end of the season. I don't want to update a guide then a week later entirely change the guide to fit the current season. I just don't want to add more work on my hands. So when ever this site puts all the new changes of S5 in expect me to do a lot of things. So that's the reason why I'm not doing anything on the site at the moment.

Woah, we're green! Congrats to all my fellow new vets!

I can guess who the first "Altruistic Artist" and "Guide Critic" are going to be...

Lmao at the "yellow pleb", "soon™", and "sense of pride and accomplishment".

The new +Rep titles are great.

Question about the new Editor classification: Is anybody who is accepted as an editor allowed to use the Editor's Office?

The vanity title sounds interesting, and it also sounds like a great way to motivate newcomers. If you haven't fully decided on a color for it yet, here's a couple of suggestions.
Idea 1

Idea 2

Idea 3

Looking forward to the S5 contest, though I'm not sure if I want to judge (like last time) or compete.

Community Spotlight sounds very interesting, though I would personally prefer spotlighting guides instead (so that we can put guides on the front page that we know for sure are good, thereby improving our standing with the wider Smite community). But you're the boss.
