Example Build Progression (Replace Boots Late) Notes This example build provides good mobility and mana sustain from Talaria Boots, some protection auras, higher group basic attack speed via Shogun's Kusari for mid-game objective pressure, and high CDR for ability spamming.

Your last 2 items are situational. Build as preferred.

Build Item Talaria Boots Talaria Boots
Build Item Sovereignty Sovereignty
Build Item Shogun's Kusari Shogun's Kusari
Build Item Breastplate of Valor Breastplate of Valor
Build Item Oni Hunter's Garb Oni Hunter's Garb
Build Item Midgardian Mail Midgardian Mail
Build Item Witchblade Witchblade

Starting Items (Boots or Chalice of Healing if preferred) Notes You can pick up Chalice of Mana to support early to mid-game mana use, as he won't have great mana sustain until he's built some items with MP5 or a mana pool. Get potions of your choice ( Healing Potions are probably preferred, for health sustain until Conviction is leveled up a bit.

Alternate Start #1: Choosing Chalice of Healing allows you to get in the face of the enemy to be a distraction, take hits while you build stacks on minions with Taolu Assault, etc. Get extra potions of your choice.

Alternate Start #2: Rush mobility by getting Boots + up to 6 potions. This will give you an earlier ability to rotate or pressure.

Example Aggressive Support Build (Replace Boots Late) Notes Warrior Tabi isn't present in the standard choices of Boots, but gets a showing here, especially considering the scaling potential of Taolu Assault.

Also outside of the meta for a Support role but functional in an aggressive focus are Void Shield and Shield of Regrowth.

Void can be switched with Breastplate of Valor if you're outperforming the enemy team, and have the gold to spare will give you very solid pressure and cut through lower early game protections. Combined with Shogun's Kusari, you make your ADC a much stronger threat in the mid-game.

Shield of Regrowth provides great mobility and health. Health in particular is lacking in the earlier items in this build, and the mobility allows you to rotate quickly or stay in the enemy's face.

Pestilence is an optional item to be used against anti-heal. Midgardian Mail is another good option.

Build Item Warrior Tabi Warrior Tabi
Build Item Breastplate of Valor Breastplate of Valor
Build Item Shogun's Kusari Shogun's Kusari
Build Item Void Shield Void Shield
Build Item Shield of Regrowth Shield of Regrowth

Revision History

Hello everyone! My name is Branmuffin17 (PC IGN: Muffinman17, PS4 IGN: Branmuffin17), and I'm a SMITEFire moderator and casual SMITE player on PC and PS4.

This is a work in progress, as it should be. I'm always open to new ideas and different approaches.

Guan Yu is a very unique god in his class. His kit contains a couple of key functions that gives him broad team utility, including physical protection reduction and group healing.

.... Strengths ....

+ High sustain
+ Great team-support abilities
+ Good escape
+ Good damage potential
+ Rides a freaking horse!!!
. Weaknesses .

- Mana hungry
- No burst damage
- Weak initiation
- Hugely ability-dependent
- Low CC for a support

He is a niche Warrior, as his kit isn't usually tuned for high damage and doesn't provide much hard CC. However, if played correctly and well, his heals and ult can help turn the tide of battle.

Depending on the game mode and role you choose for him, he can be built tanky or bruiser, but you should not build him as a glass cannon. Let's discuss.

1 / 1 / 1.3 / 1.75x damage and swing time progression. Third hit cleaves. Last hit's range is extended to 16 units.

Use his attack progression to your advantage, depending on the situation.

Discussion: As of Patch 5.8, Guan's basic attack has been buffed. With the 3rd attack now providing a cleave, it can hit multiple enemies.

Tips: Use this to your advantage when laning, if you are looking for faster clear, by attack-canceling into Taolu Assault immediately after the 3rd hit.

Each instance of damage Guan Yu receives or deals provides stacks (up to 20). At max stacks, abilities used will have a boosted effect. Stacks only reset when out of combat.

Discussion: The optimal use of this passive requires you to hit or be hit. Using Taolu Assault, especially against minions, can quickly max your stacks to provide extra effects for all other abilities, including 1.5x healing!

Once stacks are built, stacks will persist as long as you remain in combat. Keep track of your stacks, as you may want to save them for teamfights.

Tips: Once stacks are built, stay in combat as long as possible to keep stacks up.

*NOTE* Mystical Mail's passive can very quickly build stacks.
Skill #1:

Heals himself and allies in an area around him. Healing friendly gods reduces all cooldowns by 2 seconds. 12 second CD.

Leveling Priority: Level this 2nd in Conquest / Siege, and 1st in teamfight modes.

General Use: Self / Group / Minion Healing

Discussion: This circular, AOE heal is the bread & butter for your entire team. Quick CD and enhanced healing from max Painless stacks.

This ability is great to help you and nearby teammates sustain in-lane, and is an even more amazing team-based ability. In teamfight modes, this should be your first priority, but in longer games with separate lanes (e.g. Conquest), you will want to make sure your minion clear via Taolu Assault is also leveled adequately.

Tips: The ability can heal your minions, so if you're laning, you can keep them alive longer to put pressure on your lane.
Skill #2:

Warrior's Will
Charge forward. All enemies in his path take damage and are slowed (20% for 2 seconds). Hitting enemy gods lowers all of his CDs by 2 seconds. Immune to roots, cripples, and knockups while dashing. Max Painless stacks provide a 40% slow for 2 seconds. 12 second CD.

Leveling Priority: Level this last.

General Use: Minor Escape / Control / Peel

Discussion: This is a short-distance dash, so shouldn't be heavily relied on as an escape. It serves offensively to provide damage and a slow, and defensively to help create distance or help teammates escape.

Focus on this ability last, since increasing levels only increases damage (and mana cost), not the slow effect.

Tips: Use this ability AFTER using Taolu Assault / Conviction, to decrease the CD on those abilities.
Skill #3:

Taolu Assault
Guan Yu spins his blade, hitting enemies every 0.3 seconds for 3 seconds (max 10 hits per individual enemy). Each hit steals enemy protections (2-10 protections per stack, max 3 stacks, 3-5 second duration), giving them to Guan Yu. He is immune to knockback for the duration. Max Painless stacks provide increased protection steal (3-15 protections per stack). 15 second CD.

Leveling Priority: Max this 1st in Conquest / Siege, and 2nd in teamfight modes.

General Use: Wave Clear / Teamfight Damage / Boxing

Discussion: This is his wave clear ability, and as an added bonus, provides you with protections (while stealing them from enemy gods). Focus on this ability first in matches with separate lanes (e.g. Conquest), though it's of secondary importance to Conviction in teamfight modes.

As Support, if your ADC has strong waveclear, you can put 3 or 4 levels into this and then concentrate more on leveling Conviction.

Tips: Use on minions and enemy gods to quickly build Painless stacks, and to decrease their protections and give you more!

Cavalry Charge
Guan Yu mounts his warhorse and charges for 4 seconds. While mounted, he can steer & attack, speed up/slow down, and is immune to CC. Enemies hit take damage and are slowed (25%). Each hit increases damage from consecutive hits against that target by 20% (2 second duration). Enemies hit on the dismount are stunned for 1.5 seconds). Max Painless stacks increase slow to 40% and stun to 2 seconds). 90 second CD.

Leveling Priority: Level this as the situation demands.

General Use: Chase / Escape / Teamfight Disruption

Discussion: Acts as offense, defense, and teamfight disruption. Great escape function in a pinch (you are CC-immune for the duration). Chasing ability is awesome too. In a teamfight situation, don't hesitate to use it at the start, as it's got a nice, high damage AOE attack that can lock enemies down with the slow and stun.

Normally, I'd say to level this whenever it's available, but it really depends on how your team is doing. If you're constantly on the offensive and dominating them, level this anytime you can. If you're being pushed back, you might find more use out of prioritizing other abilities.

Support Master (Tank Build & Discussion + Gameplay)

Guan Yu isn't a standard support. That role is most popularly filled by magical-based Guardians, who usually have more CC abilities to help control play. Although he lacks some CC, his kit screams tank, and his healing brings an element only a few select Guardians can provide. This basic build (and the options provided herein) is functional for any mode where you want to be a true tank.

Solo Master (Bruiser Build & Discussion + Gameplay)

Guan Yu may be well-suited to being a Support tank, but he can also be played in a Solo role, due to the sustain in his kit. CDR is still key, as he is completely ability-reliant. He may not output as much damage as other gods, but he makes up for that with his mid/late-game teamfight presence, which includes inherent protection reduction and healing.

Assault Master (Assault-Specific Items & Discussion)

This Guan Yu Assault section is supplemental to The Overarching Assault Guide.

DO NOT REROLL if you are Guan Yu, as he's in the healer category. I'm assuming you haven't, if you're using this as an in-game reference.

Guan Yu is a very unique god in his class, and is also one of the most common gods to be found in Assault, because he is one of the 5 free gods, and he is categorized as a healer. This increases his chances that someone not familiar with his strengths will build and play him in a less-than-optimal way. If you're confident in your healing/support skills with him, you might try requesting a trade for him, if someone else rolls him.

What makes him unique? It's the combination of all of the following:

  1. He is the only physical god that provides significant group healing ( Cupid can help in a pinch, but won't sustain an entire team).

  2. His whole kit asks you to take damage in the face (it increases his stacks of Painless).

  3. He has an ult ( Cavalry Charge) that acts as both an extended, perfect, CC-immune escape, as well as a chaser with damage escalation!

  4. He's got built-in protection transfer (less for them, more for you) in Taolu Assault.

He can spam heals all day (well, until he runs out of mana, which happens QUICKLY). With his kit, you are the perfect main tank. Your passive ( Painless) is quickly built anytime you give OR take damage!!! If you're not blowing through your mana, you can even use your Taolu Assault on the minion wave, and quickly build full stacks for your Conviction heals!

At level 20, if you are consistently healing others and have max CDR, you should be able to heal about every 7 SECONDS! In a theoretically perfect situation with max Painless stacks at max level, healing 300 per pop, and if you heal all 4 teammates (and yourself), that's 1,500 health for EACH HEAL!!! His potential for keeping his team alive is unquestionable.

So, don't screw your team over by building for damage (which I see too many people do). Instead, get that CDR maxed, kindly ask others to get Meditation Cloak to help your mana, and keep your team alive. Let other guardians or warriors build that damage instead.

In my old S2 gameplay video, I finish a 13:26 game with over 32,000 in healing! He doesn't quite have that capability in his current state, but it can still be very significant.

Here are some example builds, with discussion, based on enemy composition.

All that means is that you've played Guan a lot. Considering your "guide", I disagree with your statement. You haven't proven you know anything. Boasting without proof is nothing more than flapping your lips together.

On top of that worshippers can be boosted so this lowers the value of having an x amount of mastery points.

I have beaten a 2 star loki with a full tabk guardian (dunno which one however I do know I have only 0-2 mastery rank on most of them) because he couldn't build at all.

Whats your opinion of Blackthorn after re-inforced greaves on Guan Support? Also do you think this build was fine:
Branmuffin17 (291) | July 23, 2019 10:51am
I think that build was fine. You obviously did well too. Reinforced was probably the better choice since it provides some prots, to allow you to get Blackthorn (health but no prots) after and still be able to take some damage.

Your build perhaps has a bit less CDR than I'd prefer into the mid-game (10% CDR until you got Witchblade as 5th main item), but that's okay as long as you can make it work.

How much trouble did you have with the Chronos / Ganesha duo? They had multiple things that could interrupt your Taolu Assault, and make it extremely frustrating for your clear or aggression. Was the Ganesha blowing his silence and you just worked around it? What about the Chronos 3?

Honestly, It was very annoying with Ganesha silencing my 3, but with the AMC we still managed to outpressure them early. The Chronos mainly used his 3 on the wave or for self-peel. I think we got an early kill on either the Ganesha or the Chronos. But then, problems started when the Erlang was starting to gank the duo lane (or well, everywhere since our jungler was non-existent). He seemed to be a massive problem and just snowballed from there.

I think I probably should have got Genji's Guard or Shogun's Kusari over Heartward Amulet, but I was trying to make up for the lack of Gauntlet of Thebes by getting aura items.

Should I maybe just have gone Talaria > Thebes > Genji's/Shogun's > breastplate?

I think Blackthorn hammer may be a lategame option on Guan if you have max cdr (or 30%) and you're spamming your heal/abilities lategame.
Branmuffin17 (291) | November 29, 2018 10:53am
Hmmm...that's a good consideration at this point. That's funny, because the comment immediately below is talking about it also, and talking about it being maybe okay but usually having better options...and selling it late game.

But with this current consideration...if my build didn't include much MP5 from Genji's Guard or Shogun's Kusari, then this item would be an immediate solution to never running out.

Possible candidate for insertion into a Solo Mystical/Painless stacker build as late replacement to Mystical...

Warrior Tabi, Mystical Mail, Ancile, Spirit Robe, Shield of Regrowth and/or Oni Hunter's Garb and/or Void Shield and/or Pestilence, replace Mystical with Blackthorn Hammer. Order flexible. Hammer's health subs in for the health Mystical provided.
Kriega1 (87) | November 29, 2018 11:00am
Huh? Why would you rush mystical on Guan when you need mana on him asap?

What ya think about blackthorn hammer?..
Ive been building it after boots against physicals - im aware its not meta but ive been having good early game with it.
No mana problems
Power gives you good clear
You cant go wrong with 350 health.
However i usually see myself selling it around mid game or when teamfighting begins usually for a solid CDR item or counter item.
I might get hate for this or told that im wrong because its not meta and there are better items but i like to mess around with items and decided to share this one because it works lol.

-better wave clear
-no mana problems
-cant go wrong with health

Id like to hear your thoughts or your own experiences with trying this :)
Kriega1 (87) | May 22, 2018 1:56pm
I don't think Blackthorn Hammer is the worst item ever, I like the passive but not the base stats that much. There are better item choices though. I would try ask any pros on twitch if they see any use for the item, or ask on smite reddit.
Branmuffin17 (291) | May 22, 2018 2:32pm
It's definitely a good question, and I've wanted to incorporate it in some builds, but to this day I've never built it (to my recollection). Honestly, although it sounds really nice and seems like it makes sense (hey I get 10% CDR, but if I am running low on mana, it gives it back until I'm good again), in the end, I just don't think it's better than a lot of other items that I'd consider core.

Can it work? Absolutely. The stats make sense. CDR is nice for Guan, added health and mana are nice for general survival and ability use, and hey, it comes with some power. Sweet.

But consider that if you're in Solo, you likely have the blue buff, so mana really shouldn't be much of an issue, lending less benefit from needing that crazy 50 MP5.

As another point of comparison, check these numbers run through Smite Builder. Just chose some standard stuff... Chaac dealing damage to Hercules with Thunder Strike at skill level 4. Both at level 7 (just cuz), both have Warrior Tabi, and neither actually has Warrior's Blessing...these are pure numbers.
Based on this, which do you feel is better for your use? Probably depends. Strictly speaking against a physical enemy, BoV is going to make you take less total damage as a percentage of your total health, and thus will keep you alive longer against a physical enemy. It also gives you 20% CDR compared to a situational 10%, so you get to use abilities more. BoV is 100% superior in this case. don't get the mana buff because it's stolen and you're constantly pushed back, you might appreciate the situational MP5. If facing a magical enemy early (actual teamfights before you get magical protections online, or a magical jungler, or a magical mid rotates to your lane for whatever reason), then the health from Blackthorn Hammer will benefit you more than BoV. And yes, that 30 power will allow you to deal a bit more early damage (60 damage against an individual getting hit by the entire cast of Taolu Assault before mitigations). Not a whole lot, but it's something. And, if you want to touch on's 100 gold less.

But overall, I'd still say that BoV is likely the better choice. I can see selling the Hammer late game, but if you're getting rid of it mid-game, that's a bit inefficient for the build as a whole.

Hey, Bran. I had an idea that I wanted to discuss with you about Guan Yu, so I figured this would be the best place to ask.

I know that you said that you prefer to build him tanky in the Solo lane, but I personally build to be a bit of a bruiser when I play Solo. This usually means picking up one or two offensive items. In my last match, I had already built Masamune, but wanted more damage (specifically penetration), and decided to build something different in a spur-of-the-moment decision:

How do you feel about The Crusher as an offensive item for Guan Yu?

At a first glance, it may seem strange, but after playing it out, it didn't feel too bad. For one thing, it enabled me to do some solid damage with the nice flat penetration, especially when combined with the protection shred from Taolu Assault. As an added bonus, it speeds up Guan Yu's horrendously slow attack chain a bit, which can help you build stacks of Painless in the long run.

But the other real benefit that I got from it was the item's passive. It isn't a secret that Guan Yu likes Cooldown Reduction, so in addition to your other items, the passive on The Crusher gives your abilities some insane spam potential. I don't think it was difficult to apply the passive either, as Guan Yu tends to be a very in-your-face god in the later stages of a game, and you can usually weave auto attacks in between your combination strikes.

I think it could be at least viable in certain scenarios, and an interesting one at that. I don't think I've ever seen this built on him (maybe it is a bad idea and I am overlooking something?), so was interested to hear your thoughts.

For reference, the match: Here
Branmuffin17 (291) | January 15, 2018 1:00am
Hey DV,

Initial response on seeing the item in question: Not very optimal.

Second thoughts after reading your explanations: Hmmm...maybe? Let's discuss.

The Crusher has nice power, decent flat pen, attack speed, and that situational CDR which I would expect in normal use to be triggered often. The attack speed is what brings the item into the most question, as I would expect in most situations to be generally of minor effectiveness only. In a fight, you normally get maybe 1 or 2 basics in (in a row), right? You'll do a lot of attack canceling, but not too much of multiple basics except against minions (and yes, the attack speed might help a bit with Painless, but it'll be a minor thing compared to how quickly it's built via Taolu and getting hit by minions). So the attack speed is the weakest aspect of the item. The other stats are functional though, and that passive could have a pretty nice effect.

Con to consider is that it has 0 protections, and this has been a very lopsided tank meta for quite a long time. And if you get this, you miss out on other potential utility. But I know you know that.

BTW, I'm guessing the Loki went ADC? More were in Solo, and you got Bluestone Pendant + Bumba's Mask? Masamune after boots for getting back to lane ASAP?

So your Masamune and The Crusher made you a lot more bruiser than normal, and if you're ahead, being a bit more offensive isn't a bad idea. And it worked for you, so I'm thinking it was good overall. I think my first choice normally would be Brawler's Beat Stick if I want a more offensively-inclined option, but you only had a couple of healers and none of them was a hunter, since they didn't have one. Thana has self, and Pos had Bancroft's but that's basically not worth the anti-heal to me.

So the biggest reason I wonder if the passive from Crusher is needed is if you're comboing your abilities well, you've got crazy CDR as it is. Not sure yet another second is going to do all that much unless you're frantically spamming your ult.

One idea I've been trying to figure out how to work into one of my guides (like the item guide) is inefficiency with regard to CDR. Still working on that. Anyway, once your ability is off CD, every moment you don't use that ability again means you're losing efficiency on the CDR you've built. It of course doesn't consider those moments when that CDR might save your life with a last second ability, but I've found myself backing off the idea of needing max CDR for ability users.

Anyway, all this basically leads to the biggest question I have for do you feel it worked for you, with regard to needing that extra 1 second of CDR situationally and the added attack speed? And I know you're a solid player, but your entire team was beating the other pretty strongly. How do you feel your build would fare in a more even match? How would you change your build if you were getting more pressure from the Cu and Thana?
DV-8 (23) | January 15, 2018 8:00pm
Yeah, my gut feeling was that it isn't very good, but I figured I'd ask. My thought process was; I want penetration, but Jotunn's Wrath will overcap cooldowns, and they didn't have much healing to justify Brawler's Beat Stick, so I just chose something different.

If I was getting more pressure from Cu and Thana I definitely wouldn't build it... My teammates would probably roast me, haha.

Branmuffin17 wrote:
More were in Solo, and you got Bluestone Pendant + Bumba's Mask? Masamune after boots for getting back to lane ASAP?

I actually built very strangely/experimentally this match. My starting build was actually Bluestone Pendant and Breastplate. I went in with the mindset to get my mana sustain and defense up as soon as possible, even if I had to sacrifice some early mobility. Cu Chulainn has a stronger early game than Guan Yu, and the Thanatos was obnoxious, so I opted for early protection and sustain to help transition myself safely into the later game.

My reasoning for getting Masamune wasn't really to return from base quicker, but rather make use of the passive in team fights and give me a strong presence when rotating.

I just realized I never thumbs upped this guide. I used it a few times whenever I got Guan Yu in assault. The results speak for how well this guide is written. Good job Bran.

Okay, WOW! This is an incredible guide Bran. I know it's a bit out of touch, but the items still seem relevant. I love the Section Headers and overall Color Scheme. It gives the Guide a Hellish Vibe!

Guan Yu has been a God on my Radar since Mid-Season 3, but like most things, the fascination never materialized into much. I don't remember the SPL Team Name in S3, but they had a player who was consistently picking Guan Yu and being a massive Support for the team delivering massive amounts of Healing each game!

Anyways, I'm really intrigued by the Support Build! Was it ever confirmed if Mystical Mail stacks his Passive?

There ya go, Drex. Builds and whatnot updated. Still considered low tier, but you'll at least be functional with this.

Hey Drex,

Firstly, thanks for the comment =) Always appreciated Guan, and had kept with him some throughout his changes. That said..., this is my most outdated guide (6 patches behind), and I've had no drive to update it recently. Reason is, right now he's just too soft of a pick. As a Support, he thrived on the aura items to help him stay close to his ADC and be a constant nuisance, and was a neat off-pick in some cases when the ADC goes magical (to balance the early lane). Thing is, he relies more on items to enhance his utility than others, since his kit doesn't have much CC for peeling.

In Solo, he was always a weaker pick, and would get constantly pushed back until he had enough to be a pure tank and start roaming with others.

With the change to some of the items in the mid-season patches, such as Sov and Thebes nerfs, along with what I feel is a much better Void Stone for Guardian supports, it's just pushed him down further.

I was going to wait until he got some HR buff love, but I guess I shouldn't hold my breath, and just update the guide anyway. The current Support and Solo builds are definitely outdated, and in need of adjustment. So, I'll work on this and get it out in the next day or two. Thanks for indirectly kicking my butt on this.

Also, I'd forgotten about the Mystical Mail thing...I just asked GGF to test, and he confirmed for me...each minion hit applies one stack to his passive. This is now a key early laning item for him, even with the high price...hitting all 6 minions can basically give him full stacks in 3 seconds. That's huge. Thanks for this reminder as well.

Thanks for the quick reply. You worded my statement "the fascination never materialized into much" much better. I've played him a few times, and I just felt..overpowered? It really seems like the newer Gods are really outshining the older Gods and HiRez seems perfectly okay with that. Besides that point, my interest spiked back up last night when I was watching Mast play him as a Support. He just seems so unique and beneficial to the team in certain situations, but I see what you mean as being item dependent.

And no need to update the guide if you don't're probably right on waiting until he sees more relevance.
