INTRODUCTION

Welcome to my guide for Jormungandr, The World Serpent
My name is Big Damage. I am a dedicated Smite fan and spend most of my time playing Ranked Conquest, Ranked Joust and some Assault. In Conquest I mostly enjoy playing Solo and Support, however this build is just for Jormungandr in Solo.
This is my second SmiteFire guide, and constructive criticism is always welcome. Before I start I would like to add credits to Zilby and Mowen for the templates and notes on how to implement bbcode, this guide would not be possible without it!

Without further ado, onto the guide!

PROS AND CONS

Pros:
  • One of the fastest wave clears in Solo
  • Strong pressure early game, strong front line late game
  • Immune to knockbacks and displacement ( Awilix 1 and ult, Hercules 2 and 1)
  • Easy escape and fast rotations with The World Serpent
  • Various, easily applied CC
  • High damage AOE
Cons:
  • Very slow
  • Locked down easily without ultimate
  • Damage falls off late game
  • Combos can be predicted and avoided
  • Takes up way too much space on your screen
  • Immovable can really hurt him if opponents know how to use against him

WHAT TO BUY, WHY AND WHEN

In this section I will go over what items are strong on Jormungandr, why they are useful and when to purchase them

Item 1
Shoes of Focus

Some people may prefer to build Shoes of the Magi now due to the higher power and lifesteal for sustain in lane, however Jormungandr does so much damage on his own, that he appreciates a slightly bigger mana pool and cooldown reduction to be able to get this damage off more often and win boxing matches in lane.
Item 2
Breastplate of Valor

Previously, Jade Emperor's Crown dominated the solo lane for Jormungandr and other guardians. However with it's nerfs and shifts in the meta, Breastplate of Valor is now proving to be the physical defence of choice. All in all it's a no brainer, protections against your laner and the 3 stats that help with how often you can hit your abilities (cooldown reduction, mana and MP5) will provide what you need to get through the laning phase.
Item 3
Stone of Binding

This is particular to when you are against a Magical solo laner, such as Sobek. You need Magical protections for Sobek, Physical in case of a Jungle gank, and Magical power to help your wave clear and poke. Stone of Binding does all of that and it gives you flat penetration for hitting enemies with CC, which Jormungandr has a ton of, hitting any god with one of your 4 abilities will reduce their protections. Due to the items low cost and base stats this is another early game item that you would need to switch out for something better later on.
Item 4
Ethereal Staff

By itself, Ethereal Staff has become a staple for bruiser Guardians, the amount of maximum health gained from it can be ridiculous, plus with some nice base stats of Magical power, health and CCR there is very few times you wont be picking this up. Now on Jormungandr it gets better, because you can have up to 9 areas of Venomous Haze on the ground at any time, which is 9 large spots where you can proc Ethereal Staff. This also goes for items like Divine Ruin which is handy against healing team comps, but overall see's the best use stealing health and mana. Ethereal Staff is a strong item to pick up at any point in a game, but it is most efficient to purchase in the mid game to take you through to the late game.
Item 5
Mantle of Discord

Okay, everyone knows Mantle of Discord is a strong defence item, that works wonders on any build on any class. This helps you achieve your late game front lining potential with high defence stats, however, you can really push the limit with your ultimate escape and overstay because if people try to lock you down while you're ulting to escape? It silences them all and you can escape safely, because of the high price and it's higher potential only being reached late game, you should maybe be buying this 5th/6th or replacing your boots with it.

ABILITIES AND COMBOS

Passive - Immovable
This is a unique and interesting passive, Jormungandr is immune to hard displacement, so he cant be thrown by Xing Tian or ulted by Hades. However he takes 15% more damage for 2 seconds after being hit by the hard displacement, and is also slowed for 20%. In short, this can be what saves you or what kills you so savour the moments where you aren't being dropped in a Scylla ult by a Cerberus ult but watch out for when Sobek procs your passive allowing others to really hurt you.

1 - Venomous Haze
Venomous Haze provides decent ranged damage and is primarily used to set up the 3 and/or 2. It can easily proc item effects that are triggered from being hit by abilities, due to the long time the Venomous Haze "puddle" is on the ground for along with the large space it takes up and the number of them you can have up. As I pointed out earlier with Stone of Binding because of the slow you can proc the item for every tick from stepping in a "puddle". This ability, along with the 2 and the 3 all interact with each other, allowing for more "puddles" and more damage.

2 - Consuming Bellow
Now here is the icing Jormungandrs cake. This AOE deals a tremble CC and enormous damage, but if that wasn't enough, you get bonus damage for every "puddle" up to 3. At max rank in 3 "puddles" this will allow you to deal 480+60% of your Magical power, also when using a "puddle" the range is increased to 30. You should try to get the bonus damage at any opportunity possible, although it is still good without a "puddle".

3 - Submerge
A simple, but effective ability. Submerge as the name implies, gives you invisibility as you submerge under the ground and gain 30% movement speed, you can end this ability early or wait the full 5 seconds to engage an AOE knockup, dealing damage around you. This can be used to engage targets, or if a target is nearby a "puddle" it will spawn 2 more puddles in an area in front of you, granting you the maximum for bonus damage and range if you are in range of all 3 "puddles" on your second ability, Consuming Bellow.

4 / Ultimate - The World Serpent
The most ridiculous escape for a tank, being able to stay in the fight long after you should have left and then be able to become unable to be hit and travel far across the map can be very frustrating to deal with. Although this can be used as peel, to knockup enemies that are targeting your team or to secure a long distance kill, it should in general be saved as your last escape. I wouldn't advise using it as initiation unless you know that your team can win the fight (e.g. having fire giant buff or being levels ahead), because the rest of your kit does that much better and then you are stuck without a back up plan if everything goes south. I forgot to add that from each point that you jump to and from in your ultimate you leave a "puddle" of Venomous Haze behind, allowing you to proc your other 3 abilities.

Combos

This is the standard combo to get the most damage off with your basic kit as efficiently as possible. Three "puddles" enhance your 2, and to get three "puddles" you have to hit your 1, then 3 within the 1 to get three "puddles" and then you are set up to hit your 2 effectively.

This should be used for ganking safe gods with a dash or leap escape. For example Thoth in mid, you submerge and come into the lane without his knowledge, knocking him up. He then dashes back and you can land your 1 on him giving you range and damage on your 2 to damage / CC him. Although this can also be used against gods without an escape, tricking them into dashing away from you and wasting their escape is very useful. Although not necessary, if you need to escape, secure a kill or rotate to another fight quickly you should have your ultimate ready for when ganking like this.

This combo is for what you should do after you start your ult and have enough Health / Mana to stay in the fight. You will try to land your 3 hits from your Ultimate, then as you land in your "puddle" you will Submerge to land the additional "puddles" allowing you to use Consuming Bellow to deal maximum damage in maximum range, finally try to place your 1 so that their only movement route is through the slow, try to use your annoying basic attacks on them too after using your 2 for the most damage output.

GAMEPLAY AND TEAMPLAY

This part of the guide will cover what to do at different stages of a Conquest match, and how you should play as part of a team to win the game

Early Game / Laning Phase
As Jormungandr you have some of the fastest wave clear abilities and auto attacks out of anyone in the Solo lane. Use this to your advantage to take Totem of Ku and if you use abilities to clear, poke with autos, but if you clear with your autos you can combo your abilities to deal much bigger poke and still have autos to poke with.

Mid Game / "Skirmish" Fighting
It is not hard for you to get a lead and out farm the enemy as Jormungandr. Try to proxy to clear back camps or rotate to the mid lane with your lead to win small team fights and push mid towers or the Gold Fury.

Late Game / Teamfighting
Unlike most laning phases power houses, Jormungandr doesn't really fall off late game. With your inherent tankiness and kit making it difficult to be locked down. Use your kit to hit hard into the backline and ult away when it's time to get out. Use this pressure to help your team secure Fire Giant and Phoenixes to win the game.

SUMMARY // CONCLUSION

Jormungandr is an absolute monster when it comes to laning, boxing, teamfighting, pressure, and pretty much everything you need when it comes to the Solo lane, I hope this build was useful, thank you for reading!

Jorm is one of the few character Stone of Gaia pretty useless because he never procs the passive as he is unable to be displaced

Yeah it's part of the reason he's not in a great spot right now. To keep up with the current sustain meta he needs to build it but because he has 2 knock ups in his kit he's going to keep procing it on opponents.

You could forgo it and try to just proxy and be annoying but that isn't where his main strength is (was) in my opinion.

It’s also due to the nerf he got to the base damage of his autos.

Not too sure about obsidian shard or doom orb in a solo lane build, unless your team is stomping and you just decide to go full damage. Could you explain reasoning behind picking these?

Obsidian Shard would be very situational if considered at all.

Doom Orb has no place in a solo lane build for Jorm at all. Better off with Ethereal Staff or Soul Reaver.

The whole point of why Doom Orb is being picked up in the current meta is in Mid lane due to the Magic Shoes, Lost Artifact and 1 Multi Potion or Healing Potion start where you can rush Shoes of Focus and then afterwards finish Doom Orb or just finish the tier 2 and then finish the tier 3, and Doom Orb makes up for the mp5 lost by skipping Mage's Blessing, letting your build come online sooner.

The power items such as those 2 are essentially to replace where the ethereal staff is, still a tanky build however if you wanted more power and speed seeing as how slow Jorm is and couldn't afford to get rid of the last power item for say winged blade, I would use Doom Orb. Obsidian Shard is in the same position, a bit more of a snowball item, but say they're building high magical protections or you have a Chronos melting people making squishies build magical protections too, that is what I would go for.
