Introduction

Hi! I'm a Platinum Ratatoskr almost to diamond with him on the leaderboards. I love ratatoskr in solo and jungle and that's all you should know about my experience with rat.

Items (Jungle)

Some of you might be rather confused at my choice in items as i seem to build ratatoskr tanky, for those of you that wanted a burst risky get in-get out build i still added one for you. Some of you are likely confused at my choice of items for solo and some of my items for jungle's tanky build and i intend to clear those up and show exactly why i built those items.

Obvious core on him, no reason not to build this and i'm not even sure why i should explain why.

This is what some of you might get confused at but alot of you should understand, the reason i build this is because of rat's inbuilt healing, although it is minimal by itself, glad's shield increases the healing and potential to dive the enemy backline and survive much higher as you can sustain through most damage. This item gives rat some prety good sustain combined with his pasive which is why i build it on both jungle and solo.

This is something you may also raise an eyebrow at, the reason i build it is because health and better camp clear as thos build lack's damage to take out jungle monsters quickly. Health is a very important stat and this build lacks it as an adc can penetrate hrough almost all physical defense with the meta adc build whereas health can be shredded but with Qin's Sais but the reason health is important is because you need good health with good prots to be tanky, if you have 2000 health with exteemely high protections, that doesn't mean a titan's bane or obsidian shard won't shred through you like your defense is paper.

Cooldown reduction, Magical Protections. It's pretty much the magical breastplate of valor so a bit of CDR with some Magical defense is nice and the extra health is good too.

30% penetration does not mean it adds penetration from 30% of your flat pen in your build, it means that it completely penetrates through 30% of the enemy protections with some damage with it, really no reason not to build it because it's so useful for a jungler.

Mantle of discord is manadatory because of the massive protections boost snd cdr with it's passive, very useful item in my opinion.

Solo

What you're wondering about the solo build is probably the stone of gaia, the reason i build it is encause the sustain is massive paired with rat's passive and gladiator's shield making him tanky as all hell.

The reason to get Hide of the nemean instead of mystical is because Stone fo gaia makes up for lost health potential and you can make enemy adc's kill themselves with this and shield of thorns.

Ratatoskr in solo

An unorthodox pick indeed. You should only go ratatoskr solo if you have a warrior jungle or a guardin jungle as assassins have lower base health and protections than warriors and guardians. Full defense ratatoskr really does work but you can take the jungle tanky build if you prefer, it depends really.

Tank Rat Vs. Burst Squishy Rat

There really is no right or wrong here in your average gold-plat ranked game, matters in your diamond-masters games slightly as it depends on the enemy's team comp or your own. Will i be peeled off too easily due to the enemy having a nox mid or high cc? Will i need more survivablity in a teamfight with gladiator's shield for survivablity? In my honest opinion for jungle, the tanky build is just simply my preference since he has enough base damage to handle himself with titan's bane and his passive, too risky togo a full burst build as a squishy little squirrel, your whole combo will easily kill a squishy as the tanky build and you want to focus on your early game rotations, getting a kill on the enemy jungle gives you a ****ing field day snowballing and ganking mid and stealing speed buff. Being tanky combined with snowballing is not fun to play against, it's definitely is fun to play as though.

+1, good guide. What do you think about on him in solo?

I would recommend that item in solo yes. With titan's bane you can still do some damage to tanks and with that item you can do enough damage to kill an adc by yourself without thorns. Don't get me wrong on the guide, bruiser rat still works in solo but only if you have a guardian or warrior jungle.

Actually, there's one reason (albeit minor) why you might consider not building .

reduces protections (up to 6 per hit, 4 stacks, for a total of 24 protections reduced at max rank). This will cut a bit into the effectiveness of TB's % pen. Note I'm not saying it's not still a good item, but I think you can get along without it depending on comp and how you're doing (and what is needed). TB is a pure damage item, with a bonus that it also helps a lot with objective damage, if you're looking to take down towers ASAP at the point you build it (and usually not built until a bit later in a build, when more protections are built...you have it as item #3 in your Pen and Burst Focused build).

Rather, some consideration should be given to , which works very well for bruiser needs when expecting some physical damage, as the passive works hand in hand with . Additionally, he works well with , if you want a damage item with anti-heal utility.

It's pretty much a given that Rat needs to be a bruiser (rather than a glass cannon). In the Jungle (the mighty Jungle), it's also really important for him to get his CDR up ASAP. is often an early item (often right after completing the Acorn).

can be a good item for him, but it's not core, at least not in the Jungle. Also have to consider the gods you're targeting or are giving you trouble. If those gods are magical, then the Shield isn't very helpful. Thus, you need flexibility in the build (and also to note that Shield is a bridge item that should be replaced late-game, which is not mentioned as far as I can see).

For the Solo build, again, Glad shield is great (and again, a bridge item) if facing a physical Solo / physical Jungler. But normally, he's going to be a bit all over the place, and the next item should often be either a balanced protection item (like ) or a magical defense item (like or , depending on need).

I don't personally like on a god like Rat. It's a nice counter to basics, but doesn't have any health, and is really meant for gods that can take a lot of hits and/or draw hits to them due to abilities (e.g. 's taunt). If you DO pick it up (on any god) it's usually better against critical builds, whose items usually are built later, so build it as a late-game counter. Also don't think he needs , but that's my opinion.

Really, though, that Solo build does need some offensive items and more CDR. He's not a normal tank with crazy base damage that can get away with a pure tank build. He needs to use abilities a lot, and he needs some power and pen.

People put way too much on the physical defense reduction, titan's is a solid item on him despite the prots reduction. Void shield is too expensive which is why it has fallen out of meta and it's magical equivalent is 2150 gold whereas void shield costs 2700. Yeah i forgot to mention that, this guide was supposed to give a few decent builds, not completely explain what and when to build against magical solos or junglers but i'll update it anyway for that, i wasn't willing to go into too much depth with that since i made the guide pretty late. Gladiator's is a bridge item for him yes but i find the sustain to be pretty valuable since no one has antiheal early, and oops you're right about selling gladiator's shield, i forgot to mention that it's supposed to be sold for a situational item such as maybe spirit robe or titan's bane or brawler's, i'll update it for that as well.

I absolutely give you that, that is very expensive, which is why I say to give it consideration...note I didn't say it's core. Keep in mind, I'm not saying is bad, but I don't think Void should be overlooked, depending.

The combination of physical protection, power, and protection reduction (e.g. pen) is a perfect combo for a bruiser build. Yes, its magical counterpart, , is an amazing item overall for the price, and the added health is also a bonus. But here are the considerations I would give, and why I wouldn't just toss it by the wayside.

Remember that protection reduction will help any other physical gods. Often, you'll have a physical ADC and physical Solo / Jungle besides yourself, so this should help those teammates deal more damage anytime you're engaged together.
Physical protection is technically more valuable than magical. Not only against physical enemy gods (which are often more numerous than magical), but also against minions and objectives of all types, which all deal physical damage. In addition, physical power from items is generally lower than the magical counterpart, so 30 power and 40 physical protection is potentially as valuable as, say, 60 or 70 magical power and protection.
