In early game what you need to focus on is not getting killed and getting stacks.
I suggest being neutral, not atacking, staying behind your tower using your 3 to kill minion waves.
If you are playing against a non-good late god, then you'll just have to wait till you have your build complete and you'll destroy him. The good think about late anubis is that it can't be countered.
If you are playing against a late god. Let's say Aprhodite. Her potential is better used in late. If you face against that problem i suggest getting more damage instead of hp stacks.
When you have your build ready (normally 18-20 mins) you are ready to kick some *ss.
Now focus on using this combos over and over:
2- if landed, 3- if landed ult
2- if not landed, 3, retreat
3- if landed 2, ult
3- if not landed, 2, ult
Personally i don't use my 1 that much when playing anubis. But if you want to finish your enemy and don't have any other skills, then use it.
Tips on ult:
Normally, your enemy will buy beads to run away from your ult after you stun him. So try stunning him and act like you are going to throw the ult. But don't. Normally, he will waste he's beads and you will be able to later make a better move.
Tanks:
If you are facing a tank. Don't buy hp and instead buy a lot of magical penetration
Adc's: If you are facing and adc. Buy physical anti-adc defenze. Like Hide of the Nemean Lion or Midgarian mail.
Other mage: If you are facing another mage. Just do you normal build. If you are skilled enough you will win
Assasin/high damage god: If you are facing an assasin, priorize defense over damage. Don't buy penetration items (unless neccesarry) and focus on not getting too close to the assasin.
Support: If you are facing a support. Priorize penetration and damage since he won't be able to damage you. This will only happen in 3vs3 jousts... i think... (i know there are people who play supports in duels. But unless you are a noob or they are too pro you don't have to worry)
PROS: In late you will usually have lots of damage and be hard to kill because of the life steall
CONS: If you die too much in early you won't get at late in time and will usually loose.

Shoes of Focus - I mainly use these for the CDR & Mana. Can use Shoes of the Magi for early +10 Penetration.
Warlock's Sash - Great Sustain with +300 HP & +400 Mana.
Pythagorem's Piece - Works great with Anubis' Passive & gives +10% CDR & a Team Aura.
Rod of Tahuti - Pretty standard item on all Mages. Big power spike, +125 MP & an additional +25% in MP.
Spear of the Magus - Reduces Magical Protections by 10. Works well on Anubis for he is an Ability-Based God.
Gem of Isolation - Added sustain & slows enemies hit by your abilities by 25% for 2s.
With Anubis it's not about having the most insane Magical Power in the world. Some builds can get him up to 760 MP but, the items don't compliment him.
I feel the items above compliment Anubis' kit, abilities & play style tremendously. If you can hit your Mummifys consistently, you should have no problems being effective.
Not to mention you'll have over 2k HP at level 20 which will curb some of his squishiness, you shouldn't always bank on his Lifesteal to bail you out of fights.
First you may want to take another look at your skill order as you can't build a third level of Deaths gaze that early but otherwise the rest of the skills look reasonable enough. Its mostly personal preference but you are right to max grasping hands early.
Second you have seven items in your final build which simply doesn't work. I would suggest dropping the Obsidian Shard which I explain why below.
As for the build, building both stacking items early is not a bad idea though personally I would suggest building boots before the book because of your lack of an escape. However, there are a few other things I have to point out that aren't optimal.
Anubis has natural penetration built in so there really isn't a huge need for Obsidian Shard especially since it loses effectiveness due to his passive. All you need is 3 ticks of any ability for the enemy to lose 21 protections which makes building flat pen or no pen at all a better idea. Most of my joust matches are against squishy targets. So I would reserve the Shard as situational when playing against guardians or warriors who are specifically staking a lot of magic protections.
Anubis' abilities have lower and lower cooldowns as they level so putting so much focus on cooldown reduction isn't as necessary on him. 20% is really all you need which works well for my next point.
Lifesteal is incredible on Anubis and you've only given him 12%. That is only a marginal benefit even with his passive. My suggestion is to swap out Chronos' Pendant with Pythagorem's Piece. That that lowers cooldown reduction by 10% but adds 25% lifesteal and 15 more Magical Power. and it passively helps your team if they do any kind of magic damage. Its a staple on Anubis.
The utility of the Gem of Isolation is great on Anubis but the power bonus from the Rod of Tahuti makes it almost a requirement. Grasping hands provides a slow on its own, Plague of Locusts can one shot any squishy target of you stun them first and Death Gaze can kill the rest on its own.
Sorry for the massive critique but thanks for making a guide and contributing!
Edit: There weren't any other comments when I started writing that so I'm sorry if I've repeated something that anyone else said.
Gods can only have 6 items. So make sure you state which item you are replacing. Also please include Rod of Tahuti, the boost to power it gives you is so big that every mage needs it as a last item.
Also double stacking is VERY risky since the effects arent immediate, at least for warlock's sash. Book of Thoth still gives that power boost but the stacks are still there for spamming those attacks. I would suggest to try to pick one or the other.
In the second one: like doing double stacks and i stated that it is indeed risky but gives a lot of poewr. Also Rod of Tahuti isn't necessary.
1) Two stacking items takes a lot of time out of your hands, even when you are the main one clearing waves. You could be rotating throughout the lanes, ganking maybe, or even push the enemy jungler. Even in casuals, if you have a stacking item you are gonna take time to get online. Rod of Tahuti makes you come online when you buy it.
2) I hope you know Im not saying to not get stacking items at all. Im just saying that if you want to stack, just do one. A mage should not be stuck in mid all day trying to build up stacks, and a mage in casuals should not be focus on clearing the wave all the time.
3) Since I have no time on my hands you can do the math, since it is your build anyways. Take out one of the stacking items and add Rod of Tahuti in it. Compare your power of the old build to the new build and I am certain that you have more power with Rod of Tahuti then two stacking items.
Trying to help you improve your overall damage output, and to let you get online faster. That is it.
Actually, if I understood it right the guide has nothing to do with Conquest at all, it says in the title Joust/Duel, and reading through the tips implied to me that it's mainly about 1v1 Duel in general.
In that case it is indeed true that Rod can be sometimes skipped as one can't really follow a fixed build, and counterbuilding to the opponent is of the most importance when making item choices.
That being said however, in my opinion a dedicated "counter item" slot should be considered- for example as a 3rd or 4th item- be it defence if you're behind or penetration if you're ahead, or something situational like Gem of Isolation.
One thing I would also suggest would be to add a "start" (or something like that) section in the build itself, for example Golden Sash+ potion, Talon Trinket + potions, Vampiric Shroud/ Soul Stone + Potion of Magical Might + potions.
All in all though, I'd support the idea of considering changing the double-stacking, as it only will work if you're ahead/avoiding every confrontation and farming; but sometimes you won't even be able to get into late game with such slow start and when you're given an early-mid game opponent.
Oh and the ending of the build can be somewhat confusing; it involves 7 items- either Chronos' Pendant or Gem of Isolation should be moved to optional/situational (?) subsection or something like that.
