Hello, welcome to my guide. This installment I, Stuke, will now be focusing on not only a god but a real person who has ascended into Godhood for his work during the Romance in the 3 Kingdoms. Ladies and Gentlemen, I introduce the Great General, and Saint of War, Guan Yu.
Note: you don't have to follow this guide to the smallest detail, these are suggestions on how to play Guan Yu. I encourage you to look at the comment section below and see other suggestions.

Who is Guan Yu?

Guan Yu is a Physical, Melee, Warrior that relies on him being in the middle of the fight and causing as much disruption as he can. Guan Yu is unique for his class as he's currently the only warrior that has a heal in the form of his Conviction. Having high levels of control thanks to his guardian roots, Guan Yu plays very well in the Support role just as much as the Solo.

Pros / Cons

  • High Defense
  • Good Crowd Control
  • Heal
  • Has a Horse (Need I say more)

  • Poor Damage
  • Mana Dependent
  • More Guardian like than Warrior (like he originally was)

The passive is a little wonky at first but after some practice with this god and after you get max CDR that this is one of the most important parts of his kit. Every time you get hit or hit an enemy god or minion, you build up stacks that can increase a certain effect on all his abilities. Conviction gets a boost to its healing, Warrior's Will gets a boost to its slow, Taolu Assault increases the number of protections you will steal, and Cavalry Charge gets a boost to its slow and stun. Keep in mind that these stacks go away when you exit combat and you will have to start over again if that happens.
This is what can put Guan Yu in the support role as this is a standard AOE heal not only heals allies and himself but also minions. When you hit the maximum stacks with your passive it doubles the amount of health you get from activating this ability. There is a second effect to this ability as when you heal an ally the cooldown of the ability is reduced by 2 seconds. This is one of the main tools you will be using during the lane phase to keep your teammates and minions alive while they help with taking down towers.
This has a very short distance and has a long cooldown, but this seemingly straightforward ability has a lot more up its sleeve like Conviction. Besides the slow, this ability also reduces all cooldown by 2 seconds when you hit an enemy. Using this ability and Conviction in the lane or during fights is almost necessary if you want to keep that ability spam going.
This is Guan Yu's signature ability, this is a great ability when in the solo, jungle, or support role. Every time you hit an enemy god, minion, or jungle monster, you steal their protection and give them to yourself. This beautiful ability is one of the better boxing abilities or a way to weaken your opponent for your teammate.
Another one of Guan's signature abilities. You hop on your horse and charge forward while having full control of how fast or where to turn. Every time you hit an opponent with the debuffs, the damage is increased. You could cancel this ability early to get the stun off if they try to get away. What is interesting about this ability is that it is affected by any movement speed items or relics you get on him.

How to Build Guan Yu

Guan Yu relies on his ability to use crowd control and heal his allies, like a semi-support, but still needs some damage to be a threat in the solo lane. Getting your hands on items that provide CDR, protection, and damage will benefit Guan greatly as you want to be an annoying consent presence throughout the match.

  • Giddy Up
Speed affects how fast your horse moves, so pop your sprint or get fast moving items to make you get into a team fight faster.
  • Heal
Heal, AND OH PLEASE LORD BUDDHA HEAL! You play the second or even the main healer of the team sometimes, so heal allies whenever possible to keep them from yelling at you for "not healing enough".
  • Former Guardian
Guan Yu use to be a guardian, meaning his kit focuses more on crowd control and other supportive effects. So be aware his damage is fairly moderate to low so don't charge in and think you're going to wreck the enemy team.

Shred and Strike
This is a standard combo for a Guan Yu player and will fully utilize his ability spam with two parts of his kit reducing cooldowns to keep the pressure going.

In conclusion, Guan Yu is a Supportive Warrior that takes himself and his team into a fight and slaughters the enemy. Guan might not be the strongest, but his ability to be in the fight and debuff his opponents prove his usefulness to the team. All you need to do is play your cards right and know when to strike and you can be a great team player like the General is.

Hey Stuke,

My personal opinion, but I feel that having all 3 of BoV, Blackthorn, AND Genji's is just blowing out your mana needs. I think BoV + Blackthorn is great, but there are many magical protection items that provide a lot of utility (e.g. Pestilence, Oni Hunter's Garb) that I think it's not needed in most cases, unless you're facing a magical solo and want to counter them with Genji which case, perhaps pass on BoV.

Why do you have 60% CDR on your example build?
Stuke99 (41) | April 5, 2019 6:29am
Whoops, yeah that's way over the cap, give me a minute and fix it.

Great build. Guan Yu is an extremely fun God to play and honestly this build just makes him more fun. Got yourself another upvote.

Except for arena, how come you don't recommend Chalice of Healing for warriors? (especially for conquest).
Stuke99 (41) | May 26, 2018 6:33am
With the starter given, I don't have the gold to invest into it or because I think pots offer more for a lower price. Other than gold, the other reason why is because most warriors outside of Osiris all the warriors have a way to sustain health through a form of healing or increased HpS so there's no need to get chalice of healing in the first place.

Here's where I might disagree. Maybe Guan is an exception, but for many, you realize you're talking about up to 750 health from a full Chalice, right? This is more health than you actually start with at level 1, and more than you'll get in a reasonable time from almost any HP5 item that a Solo laner might get in an early item. Between the mana buff and chalice of healing, you're pretty set on early sustain.

The exception when you might not get chalice is when you just want more potions for the early game but don't need it past the first back, and you also want to rush Boots (because good scaling on X ability, like Guan's Taolu Assault) or an early protection item.

Hello, Stuke. You have a typo in the items section, on Bulwark of Hope:

This item gives you a shield that activates when you take too much damage which can give you a small window of opportunity to wither heal up or get away.

Other than that, great guide as yours usually are. You can also maybe include Genji's Guard for some situations instead of BoV.

I have tested your build in Conquest solo. It rocks !

Does it also work in Joust 3v3 ?
Stuke99 (41) | June 21, 2016 10:10am
Since my guides tend to be general, it should work in any game mode (besides assault).
iReauxbot (11) | April 12, 2016 10:28am
How the hell do you fight Assassins in solo lane?
They seem to clear minions faster and then proceed to fight me while im clearing the final few.
I do fine against them but I know there is some kind of other strategy that works better than what I do.
A few that are annoying are Kali and for some reason its Mercury in solo lane now

stick together thay do most of there damage win you separate gank or mmax you 3 early
