Chernobog conjures a large crystal of curses and hurls it at the target location dealing damage on landing. After several seconds the crystalline curses explode dealing damage again and rooting any enemy in the area. The crystal can be detonated early by firing at it with Vicious Barrage.

Chernobog can leave the wall early by dashing or just stepping out of the wall. If he remains for the full duration, Chernobog will automatically dash out as his time expires.

Chernobog can select any of his shadow clones to fly towards. Once he reaches the location he takes the place of his shadow, refreshing his cooldowns, as well as temporarily obtaining damage mitigations and extra movement speed.

My Introduction

Greetings, everyone, I have a different guide for you this time. Since I've made a guide for every warrior in the game as of writing this, I felt it's time to branch out and make guides for other gods I haven't touched on yet, so here we are. This will be my first Hunter guide and the one I picked was a god that instantly caught my interest as I have Slavic roots (Czechoslovak/Polish) and felt a more personal connection to this God. Let me introduce the Master of Evil, the Lord of Darkness, the Figure in Black, Chernobog.
Note: you don't have to follow this guide to the smallest detail, these are suggestions on how to play Chernobog. I encourage you to look at the comment section below and see other suggestions.

Who is Chernobog?

Chernobog is a Physical, Ranged, Hunter who utilizes his kit to chase and lock down his target before pummeling them with speedy and accurate auto attacks. As Chernobog, your role in the team can duel act between a standard Carry and an Anti-Roamer god with his ultimate and his dash for some tricky maneuvering.

Chernobog is one of the hardest-hitting Hunters in the game, utilizing his combo to lock down singular or multiple targets into an area to unleash a barrage of attacks you can surely wide down the health of any god that gets in your way. On top of having very solid damage, Cherno can use his dash and ultimate to get himself into a safe position or stop an enemy from advancing/retreating. While Chernobog can hit hard, you need to land your shots to have any pressure on the enemy but that can be hard to pull off since his main lock-down combo is easy to predict and just as easy to avoid.


Heart of Cold
It's a rather simple passive but is the most important part of Chernobog's kit. Each basic attack you land on a target gives them a stack. After the third stack is applied the target is dealt extra damage in a small area around them as the stacks reset. This is why being able to land your basic attacks on Chernobog is important, your goal is to apply constant pressure to the enemy and you can't do that if you can't hit your target.

Crystallized Curses
With a short build-up Chernobog throws down a large crystal that deals damage upon landing, but that's not all. Once landed, the crystal starts counting down in which the crystal explodes dealing additional damage and rooting any target caught in the radius of the explosion. Alternatively, you can hit the crystal with your second ability for instant detonation.

Vicious Barrage
This little ability has a triple role. A line projectile that goes through all targets that functions as a basic attack so effects like lifesteal and crit chance will apply. There's more, once fired, Chernobog also gains an attack speed steroid for a short duration as well. As mentioned in Crystallized Curses, you can detonate your crystal early by hitting it with this ability. Depending on the situation, it would be best to let the crystal time out naturally and save it for when you need it for boxing.

Into Darkness
A rather slow dash but what it can do makes it different and can act as an offensive tool than strictly defensive. If you hit an enemy god with this, it applies a slow. If Chernobog hits a wall with this ability he will enter it and becomes completely immune to all forms of damage, CC, and untargetable while he stays inside the wall. You can fire this ability again to dash out from the wall. A nice trick with this is to get your opponent between you and a wall, dash through them into the wall and dash back out for a fair amount of damage. The slow from this ability can also be used to better line your lockdown combo.

Living Nightmare
When many first saw this ability they were confused as this ultimate would fit a guardian or a warrior more than a hunter but I would argue this fits thematically and gives Chernobog that secondary role as an "Anti-Roamer".
Chernobog flies into the air after a quick channeling period and sends out a shadow clone of himself to every enemy god currently on the map. When he picks a clone to fly to, he speeds towards the targeted location giving himself a cooldown reset on all his abilities, minus the ult, as well as temporary damage mitigation and movement speed. You can use this to track down a fleeing target but this ultimate can also be used to prevent the enemy from pushing the lane or completing an objective as the damage mitigation and movement speed compliment this alternative usage as well. Alternatively, you can use this to get away by picking a target in one of the other lanes and dashing back under a friendly tower or safe spot to recall.


If it wasn't obvious at this point, Chernobog benefits greatly and revolves around his basic attacks as the main source of his damage. Having items that provide a lot of attack speed as well as some additional stuff like lifesteal or critical chance will greatly increase his damage output when having to go against other gods in the game. With some additional items to help with his abilities, then Chernobog could give his enemies a hard time.


Gilded Arrow
The best starter for Crit Hunters. Every 10 seconds a minion with the most health near you is marked, if you manage to get the final hit on a marked minion then you get additional gold, increased attack speed for a short duration, and a bit of mana is restored.
At Lvl 20, we will upgrade this to Ornate Arrow for the additional gold gain but also because the more gold you have the more attack speed and crit chance you'll get.

Leather Cowl
The best starter if you're going for Auto-Attack Hunters. While you're by yourself, you gain additional movement speed but once you get near an ally it switches to attack speed.
At Lvl 20, we will upgrade this to Hunter's Cowl to make those stats and effects even more potent.



Devourer's Gauntlet
A staple item for almost all Hunters. Killing a minion provides one stack while an enemy god provides 5 stacks, each stack provides a permanent increase to your lifesteal and physical power until it hit the max amount.

Wind Demon
The solid item for Hunter's building into crit chance. Every basic attack that crits will give you a boost to your movement and attack speed that refreshes each time your attacks crit. Perfect for Chernobog that wants to hit faster and chase his enemies.

The Executioner
An item against squishy enemies. Every basic attack reduces the physical protection by a percentage that stacks up to 3 times. This item is good against targets who don't build into protections or health items. Combining this with his passive and you will do a large chunk of damage due to their shredded protection.


Every basic attack you land increases your physical damage and decreases your enemy's physical damage as well.
Note: You'll still get the increased power from your basics but if the enemy is magical the second part of the effect does nothing.

Odysseus' Bow
While mostly used for Hunters that lack a solid clear it has found use in Auto-attack builds for its high attack speed as well as making use of the passive for constant pressure against the enemy team. Every fourth basic attack you successfully hit any target with, a chain of lightning will begin to bounce between four given enemies next to each other. Each bolt deals a percentage of your basic attack damage.

Silverbranch Bow
An essential item for Auto-Attack Hunters. when you overcap on your attack speed, any additional attack speed you would get will be converted into physical power. This also applies to item auras, steroids, buffs, and relics.


If you're going the Leather Cowl route then you're sacrificing the third crit chance item from Ornate Arrow, so here's how you can make up for that while also providing decent power early. Whenever you get a kill or assist, you gain a stack that increases the percentage of your crit chance permanently until it hits a max amount and this item becomes upgraded.

A staple item for most, if not all, Crit builds. Once bought, all crit chance damage do additional percent damage.

Poisoned Star
Every time you land a crit, that target is afflicted by a poison that slows them well as reduces their damage output. This will make landing your basic attacks much easier as well as give you the upper hand if your target starts fighting back.

Your lifesteal option for when you go the Leather Cowl start. Once you hit a health threshold, the lifesteal percentage of your basics increases for a short duration before going on cooldown.

A great final item to have that can make your basic attacks even better. Once bought, all your basic attacks now apply percentage physical penetration. Since Chernobog's main source of damage is from his basics, this item helps do more damage to all enemies and objectives.

An alternative to Devourer's Gauntlet if you don't want to stack. Whenever you kill an enemy god, you gain a health shield and increased movement speed as long as you have the shield up.

Qin's Sais
For when the enemies are tanky. Every basic attack against an enemy god will deal additional damage based on a percentage of the target's health. Additionally, the damage dealt if the target's health is above 2000hp and scale-up proportionally the more health they have.

Atalanta's Bow
Whenever you get a kill or assist on an enemy god, you ignore movement speed penalties from basic attacks, walking back, or strafing as well as an increase to your attack speed. Since Chernobog has a hard time with his mobility to an extent, having this item in your Auto-Attack build can make up for that and allow you to keep applying damage.

Shadowsteel Shuriken
An alternative to Wind Demon if you need anti-heal. Whenever you deal crit damage against an enemy, you reduce their healing and regeneration. The duration of this effect refreshes each time you land another crit.

Toxic Blade
For when you need anti-heal when you're going Auto-Attack. Every basic attack reduces the healing of the target you hit.

Tips, Tricks, & Combo

  • Deadeye
    Chernobog needs to land his attacks to get his passive working and be a threat to the enemy team, take your time and line up each shot with the help of your 1-2 combo to hold them still and make it easier.
  • Shadow on the Wall
    You can use your dash and enter a wall to keep yourself safe from the enemy, global ultimates can't land if they got nothing to hit, DoT can't do what they want if you're not affected by them for the duration, and the enemy can't find you if you're pseudo-hidden.
  • Looming Presence
    Your ult can be more than just a mobility tool. Since it's a global ultimate, you have sight of all enemy gods on the map so it can be used as a map-wide ward if you need to know where the enemy is at like the jungle or at objectives.

This is going to be your most used combo. Cast crystalized curses in a target location, preferably with the enemy god in the radius, after that quickly activate Vicious Barrage to detonate the crystal early and root the enemy. once locked-down, utilize the attack speed increase to hit the enemy as many times as you can before the root runs out or they get away. Alterativly, you can use this defensively to run away but I wouldn't recommend it.
Dash into an enemy with Into Darkness and use Vicious Barrage's itital hit as well as the attack speed stim to keep up the damage while they're too slow to get away. If there is a wall near by, aim yourself so you hit the enemy as well as enter a wall and then dash out into the target again to get that extra bit of damage.
Ultimate Combo
🠞 🠞 🠞
Start off using Living Nightmare to fly towards a target, as well as get the movement speed and damage mitigation from this. After you land quickly use Into Darkness to slow the enemy you land at or get yourself into a safe distant. Once you're at a preferable position, use your fist combo, Crystallized Curses followed up with Vicious Barrage, and unleash Hell on your target.

Stages of the Game

Early Game

Chernobog can't do much this game and more than will more than likely get bullied for how much he can lack this early in the game. Turtle under tower or if paired with equally aggressive support then you can try your hand at going from hunted to hunter. Make use of the ultimate once you reach Lvl. 5 to quickly get back to the lane to prevent the enemy from pushing any further or to keep them from leaving if you think you can handle them.

Middle Game

Around this stage, you're going to start dealing more damage which you can use to start to push back against the enemy if you haven't done so already. Push the lane and take out the first enemy tower before rotating to take minion objectives, like scorpions and oracles.

Late Game

Finish the build and start going to objectives as well as making use of your ultimate as a teleport and vision to plan a team fight, block off any split push, or stop the enemies from taking objectives.


In conclusion, Chernobog is a hunter that can give the enemy team hell for his elusive wall hiding ability, lock them down, and punish them with fast basic attacks. Taking flight and hunting down the enemy or cut them off from doing something they shouldn't, Chernobog has a consistent presence, and fighting him head-on can be a life-threatening situation if he gets the upper hand. Remember to always line up your attacks, use your ult to attack as well as defend, and make their game a living nightmare.

This was a great introduction to Chernobog. I believe he excels as a mid-laner as well, that's where I have found the most success. Nonetheless, hats off for this guide.

I'd build Ninja Tabi over Warrior Tabi for the crit build.

Also for the trans build I would swap Brawler's Beat Stick for Jotunn's Wrath, and make The Crusher the item that would be replaced if you need anti-heal.

Add Asi as another boots replacement option.

Last thing, add an extra multi pot to each build's start. There is 50 gold leftover for another pot.

Your trans build needs executioner. Swap bloodforge for it, in which case I recommend swapping ninja tabi for warrior tabi (but ninja is fine, it's just if you sell boots late for a non-attack speed item it might feel a bit odd).

The Wind Demon build could work but you would be better off with Rage instead of WD for the higher crit chance. e.g. Devo's, ninja, rage, exe, deathbringer, titan's/bloodforge. Sell boots for asi or alternative.

  • Note for readers, even if it's obvious, that Crystallized Curses is his main wave-clear. Also, if you're not pressured, you don't have to use your combo with Vicious Barrage, but can just let it explode on its own, and save Barrage for boxing.

  • Obviously in the tooltip, but not mentioned in your writeup. Note that Into Darkness also does damage, and can thus do damage twice if the enemy is near a wall.

  • I'd like to see a build example using Transcendence. I personally like it as an option better than Devo's right now for a good number of hunters in general. You can also consider not going stacking at all. I've been rushing Ichaival either 2nd or 3rd also, and it makes a HUGE difference in early boxing. And Asi, IMO, is a great lifesteal option since its buff. Allows you to rush Boots if you want...just a lot of flexibility in hunter builds right now.

  • Personally would adjust your main build example. That's a ton of AS. I personally like Rage over WD here. WD late maybe.

  • You can also use Living Nightmare as a last-resort, map-wide ward, in case you really need to know where the enemy is.

You may want to make a note that you don't want to get Transcendence and Devourer's Gauntlet in the same build because double stacking isn't usually a good idea. Personally I'd go with trans + asi and I think that should be an example build.

I prefer the second ability over the first mainly for the benefits of attack speed and being able to proc basic attacks than the easy to dodge damage and root from the former.

The 1 is also your waveclear though. Something you may want to prioritise especially if you play Chern in mid.

Stuke, yet again comes out with another guide that gives you a really nice idea of the mindset you should have with a character, paired up with an equally good build. Not only it's easy to read but it also doesn't open too much space for rants and ramblings some more informative guide makers might have (This is why I also try to keep it simple lol).

Just a few things I want to point out :

1. It would be interesting for you to recommend one of your alternative / additional items as a preferred 7th item. Maybe through notes?

2. I do believe this guide would benefit a lot from a bigger combo variance. What combos should I aim to do if I'm retreating? Do I just try to Double Dash or should I use my other abilities to try to poke or maybe zone out the enemy? Things like that.
And I also think you could do a thematically straight-to-the-point matchups. What sort of mentality should a Chernobog player have when they go up againts an Anhur? or a Neith? It doesn't need to be a compendium, but some healthy reminders and maybe even some insight from your own experience would help this alot.
