Purchase Order

Normal Start Notes This should be your build when you leave base! Glowing Emerald gives you a nice boost to your health and makes it so you can build Gauntlet of Thebes earlier!

Build Item Guardian's Blessing Guardian's Blessing
Build Item Glowing Emerald Glowing Emerald
Build Item Healing Potion Healing Potion
Build Item Healing Potion Healing Potion
Build Item Mana Potion Mana Potion
Build Item Mana Potion Mana Potion

Core Notes These items feel like the best option for your first 2 items. Glauntlet of Thebes gives you a lot of protections and stacks quite easily, which is always good.

Build Item Shoes of Focus Shoes of Focus
Build Item Gauntlet of Thebes Gauntlet of Thebes

Auras Notes Being able to increase your team's protections is an insane boost, and should be fully used to it's advantage! Heartward Amulet and Sovereignty are both insane items on any support.

Build Item Sovereignty Sovereignty
Build Item Heartward Amulet Heartward Amulet

Go To Notes If you think a situational item is needed, you should exchange them with either of this items. Spirit Robe's passive and stats are, in my view, the more "must-have" than the other.

Build Item Midgardian Mail Midgardian Mail
Build Item Spirit Robe Spirit Robe

Relics Notes In a best case scenario, both of your relics should be Heavenly Wings and Horrific Emblem

Build Item Heavenly Wings Heavenly Wings
Build Item Horrific Emblem Horrific Emblem
Build Item Cursed Ankh Cursed Ankh
Build Item Magic Shell Magic Shell
Build Item Phantom Veil Phantom Veil

Alternative Start Notes If you feel like you'll have to utilize a lot of mana, change the Chalice of Healing for this double triple potion setup. Maybe change Healing Potion for Multi Potion if you really want mana that bad.

Build Item Guardian's Blessing Guardian's Blessing
Build Item Healing Potion Healing Potion
Build Item Healing Potion Healing Potion
Build Item Healing Potion Healing Potion
Build Item Mana Potion Mana Potion
Build Item Shoes Shoes

Important Situationals Notes If you feel like you need one of these items, use them. I recommend you to choose one of these items. Personal favorites are Witchblade, Emperor's Armor, Shogun's Kusari and Pridwen

Array ( [major] => Array ( [0] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 78 [display_name] => Erlang Shen [url] => erlang-shen ) [scoreVal] => 2 [notes] => Erlang is one of the most annoying gods to deal with during the entirety of the game. The best you can do in this matchup is to be smart with your CC and mess with his team, and not him directly. Don't let his team follow up on his root, his stun, his taunt, and you'll be doing your own team a big favor. ) [1] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 35 [display_name] => Fenrir [url] => fenrir ) [scoreVal] => 2 [notes] => [[Fenrir]] does a ton of damage and has a ton of CC. Make sure you taunt his [[Brutalize]] and zone out his teammates so he's left with nothing but his own devices to advance on your team. Late game, the burst from team fights normally gets the better of him, but you still have to keep him on your radar. ) [2] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 28 [display_name] => Hercules [url] => hercules ) [scoreVal] => 2 [notes] => He is nasty, especially if he has backup that follows up on his CC. Use your taunt to stop him from using [[Driving Strike]], if he hits an ally with his [[Earthbreaker]]. and try to zone out/taunt his team so he doesn't have follow up. This isn't an easy matchup, so be alert and precise in your movements. ) [3] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 101 [display_name] => Jormungandr [url] => jormungandr ) [scoreVal] => 2 [notes] => [[Jormungandr]] is, at the moment, one of, if not, the strongest guardian characterss out there. His "basic attack" is a great wave clear, and he has a lot of zoning tools, which also apply quite alot of damage. You should focus on negating his chase potential with [[Confound]] and trying to get his attention so he can't zone out your team. ) [4] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 58 [display_name] => Sylvanus [url] => sylvanus ) [scoreVal] => 2 [notes] => In most of the game, this god will make your life difficult, especially if he's good at landing his grab and his stun. He can cut you from your dash by rooting you, which doesn't negate the charge up but does stop you from dashing. Also, [[Athena]]'s playstyle heavily depends on going on for melee during her combos, which could activate his passive, which could be a quick and gruesome way to go, if their team shifts their focus on you. Keep up your attention to your allies, use your 2 to stop whoever follows up to [[Sylvanus]]' combo to dish major damage on your ally, and you'll do your best to counter his threat. ) ) [minor] => Array ( [0] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 72 [display_name] => Amaterasu [url] => amaterasu ) [scoreVal] => 4 [notes] => Ama brings an absurd boost to lane clear, and her auras make her and her team so much harder to fight. However, that doesn't mean this isn't an easy matchup, cuz she can't compete with you if you utilize your kit smartly. Focus on taunting her and her teammates with she goes in for the silence, or try to taunt her teammates right during the last hit of her ultimate, so they can't follow up on the Stun. Overall, this matchup depends more on your team's coordination, versus theirs. ) [1] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 23 [display_name] => Ares [url] => ares ) [scoreVal] => 4 [notes] => Just don't let him wreck you early game and you're good. If he's a good player, he'll hit most of his chains, which could end up in your death, but, if you can avoid his chains, you'll completely destroy his chance to end you. ) [2] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 90 [display_name] => Artio [url] => artio ) [scoreVal] => 4 [notes] => [[Artio]] Support is no match for [[Athena]]. Her kit can be difficult to deal with for newer players, but if you avoid her cripple during team fights, all you need is a good taunt and an adc to follow up on it. ) [3] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 63 [display_name] => Bellona [url] => bellona ) [scoreVal] => 4 [notes] => While Bel has good CC and a disarm, your taunt stops her most damaging ability, which will most likely force her to retreat. Make sure to save your taunt, during laning phase, to stop her from helping in the clear and to even aggress on her. An underleveled Bell is underwhelming in team fights, at best. ) [4] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 87 [display_name] => Ganesha [url] => ganesha ) [scoreVal] => 4 [notes] => [[Ganesha]] relies heavily on a coordinated team to follow up to his CC, and, if you're playing casuals, that will not always be the case. Also, you can easily counter most of his advances, using your dash to counter his/save an ally by stepping in the way, taunt to counter his silence, [[Shield Wall]] occupies a great amount of his ult, and you can outrotate him easily. ) [5] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 14 [display_name] => Guan Yu [url] => guan-yu ) [scoreVal] => 4 [notes] => While Guan is one of the best warriors out there, you shut his main damage ability with your taunt, and his CC is underwhelming, at best, compared to yours, so just make sure to taunt his team during team fights and you're good to go. ) [6] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 103 [display_name] => Horus [url] => horus ) [scoreVal] => 4 [notes] => The birdman is quite a good support, but he can't outshine [[Athena]]. Make sure you get [[Pestilence]] to make one of his better aspects, his healing, a little less useful. When he dashes in, make sure to [[Confound]] him so he can't initiate on your ADC. Careful to not get stunned/knocked up of [[Preemptive Strike]] since the ability takes a while to charge and, by CC'ing you out of it, he takes out some precious seconds of your time. ) [7] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 44 [display_name] => Mercury [url] => mercury ) [scoreVal] => 4 [notes] => He's annoying, but your taunt completely shuts whichever form of CC he can do. There isn't much to this, other than using your taunt to stop his root, if it's even needed. ) [8] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 11 [display_name] => Odin [url] => odin ) [scoreVal] => 4 [notes] => He's all about burst and his ring. Give him space to jump on the creeps and, right after, follow up with a taunt and a [[Shield Wall]], so you'll be doing massive damage towards him. If your ADC follows up, you can even kill him, which is the ideal scenario. [[Phantom Veil]] is a must-have relic. ) [9] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 56 [display_name] => Serqet [url] => serqet ) [scoreVal] => 4 [notes] => While she is quite annoying to deal with due to her mobility, your setup and CC is superior to anything she can offer to the table as a support. Just do your job and do it well and you'll be miles ahead of her. ) [10] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 79 [display_name] => Terra [url] => terra ) [scoreVal] => 4 [notes] => A good [[Terra]] player could chew you alive and spit you out, however, if you can negate her from her dash, it's almost enough to win this matchup. ) ) [even] => Array ( [0] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 37 [display_name] => Athena [url] => athena ) [scoreVal] => 3 [notes] => Study her posture. If she is defensive, abuse it. Dash in, use your taunt and your 3, and turn around to retreat so she misses her taunt, during laning phase. If she is aggressive, you have to counter her aggression, but don't get carried away, normally an aggressive [[Athena]] is an [[Athena]] that is in coms with her adc. For the rest of the game, it's a skill match. ) [1] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 26 [display_name] => Bacchus [url] => bacchus ) [scoreVal] => 3 [notes] => He is a god that isn't hard to deal with, but he isn't easy because of his tremendous CC. If you use your taunt to cancel his burp, you'll do some of the best countering possible. This is a matchup you can't be easy with, cuz he is not forgiving if you cut him some slack. ) [2] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 96 [display_name] => Baron Samedi [url] => baron-samedi ) [scoreVal] => 3 [notes] => Not only does he give a potion to his entire team, he also has a great amount of CC and a kit that is difficult to deal with, if you don't know the character. Your luck is that he is quite squishy, being a mage himself, so focus on working together with your adc to kill him as often as you can. ) [3] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 93 [display_name] => Cerberus [url] => cerberus ) [scoreVal] => 3 [notes] => The dog doesn't play around. The best tactic against him is to try to draw his attention and cancel his [[Ghastly Breath]] with [[Confound]]. He can't really outchase you, but neither can you. The best you can do when facing him is utilizing your global presence and making sure you're not allowing him to make more of an impact than your own. ) [4] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 77 [display_name] => Fafnir [url] => fafnir ) [scoreVal] => 3 [notes] => He is extremely annoying to deal with, so it's your job to be even more annoying. Make sure to apply your slow and taunt to counter his advances and his gruesome CC. If you can, focus on CC'ing his allies, since, without follow up, his CC is simply annoying, not life-threatening. ) [5] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 48 [display_name] => Geb [url] => geb ) [scoreVal] => 3 [notes] => This matchup really depends on how the enemy [[Geb]] decides to see your threat. If he focuses on countering your actions, you'll have a really difficult time impacting enemies constantly. He'll be continuously annoying throughout the entirety of the match, however, he's just as annoyed as you as you're to him, so try your best to also make his life a living hell as well. ) [6] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 68 [display_name] => Khepri [url] => khepri ) [scoreVal] => 3 [notes] => If he constantly uses his root and his dash on you, then you'll be for a world of hurt. However, if he focuses on your allies, as most [[Khepri]] players will, you can easily outmaneuver him. Focus on taunting his allies so he doesn't have a follow up to his CC. ) [7] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 34 [display_name] => Ne Zha [url] => ne-zha ) [scoreVal] => 3 [notes] => His rings are annoying to deal with, and, if he's good with his sash, he gets 10 extra points of being annoying. Just make sure to taunt him right after he lands his sash so you'll get him right before he ults, and you'll shut down the CC and setup he has to offer. ) [8] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 9 [display_name] => Sobek [url] => sobek ) [scoreVal] => 3 [notes] => His CC will annoy you, but you're superior to him. If it looks like he'll dash into one of your allies, ready your dash so you can get near your ally to help them with your taunt. However, during a team fight, you must worry more about focusing the heavy hitters, since that will indirectly help your allies since there'll be no follow up to his advances, but don't let your guard down. If he uses his dash on you, most likely his entire team will advance on your and destroy you easily. Also, be aware that his 2 will cancel the charge on your dash. ) [9] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 106 [display_name] => Yemoja [url] => yemoja ) [scoreVal] => 3 [notes] => While her [[Bouncing Bubble / Moonstrike]] can be quite annoying, [[Athena]] surpasses [[Yemoja]] in most aspects a support should cover. Be careful with her [[River's Rebuke]] and you should be fine. ) [10] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 12 [display_name] => Ymir [url] => ymir ) [scoreVal] => 3 [notes] => This matchup depends a lot on the playstyle of the enemy, and how well he can land his abilities and synergize them with his allies. Meaning, if you can out-do him in synergy and teamwork, you'll most likely prevail. ) ) [extreme] => Array ( [0] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 52 [display_name] => Kumbhakarna [url] => kumbhakarna ) [scoreVal] => 1 [notes] => Kumbhakarna will affect your game heavily if he focuses on utilizing his CC against your own since most of [[Athena]]'s abilities have a long animation sequence. However, if you can be aggressive early on and delay his leveling and his farm, you'll have an easier time, however, it's quite a risky maneuver. ) ) [tiny] => Array ( [0] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 32 [display_name] => Aphrodite [url] => aphrodite ) [scoreVal] => 5 [notes] => As much as I love Aphro in support, her biggest weakness is a smart [[Athena]]. She probably won't get her link till level 3, so focus on constantly poking her adc, even if possible, going for the kill or making them back. When she's alone, go in on her and destroy her. Letting an [[Aphrodite]] farm without being aggressive is a horrible mistake, cuz she'll be a living hell to deal with late game, so your job is to make sure she has a harder job getting to late game, and counter her late game with [[Pestilence]] and [[Cursed Ankh]] ) [1] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 57 [display_name] => Cabrakan [url] => cabrakan ) [scoreVal] => 5 [notes] => He can't really do much against you since dash slows him and your 2 will break him from his AoE damage. Also, if you have full [[Preemptive Strike]] Block meter, you can tank and negate most of his basic attack chain ) [2] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 10 [display_name] => Hel [url] => hel ) [scoreVal] => 5 [notes] => [[Hel]] is one of the most dangerous gods in the game if she snowballs, so make sure she doesn't. Have a aggressive posture during laning phase, and, ideally, kill her. If you steal her farm and just force her to be defensive and retreat often, you'll win this matchup easily. ) [3] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 85 [display_name] => Kuzenbo [url] => kuzenbo ) [scoreVal] => 5 [notes] => You are so much more relevant than him that he can't compete with your CC and your presence in general. Just avoid his ult and you're good to go. ) [4] => Array ( [god] => Array ( [god_id] => 59 [display_name] => Nox [url] => nox ) [scoreVal] => 5 [notes] => While [[Nox]]'s CC is something quite annoying and hard to avoid, she is so squishy that simply using your taunt will normally send her back to base if your team is coordinated. Keep up the pressure on her and she'll be inefficient. ) ) ) 1

Athena - Pros & Cons

........ Pros ........

....... Cons .......

  • Dash needs to charge
  • Allies can block your ult
  • Ult damage is unreliable

Intro Pros/Cons Skills Items Relics Steps Combos Summary Other Guides Guide updates

Athena's abilities are very powerful in the CC element, which includes a slow and a taunt. She has two high damaging abilities, which helps her with her viability and her ability to be played in multiple roles

Reach is a vary straightforward passive. It increases your basic attack magical power by 15% while making it a ranged attack, that goes through walls, after using an ability, making it a very useful execution/poking tool

This ability can not be leveled, and is active at all times.

Preemptive Strike is a dash,
which has a charge up time of 1,5 seconds, that goes through minions. but stops at enemy gods, dealing 80/130/180/230/280 (+50% of your magical power), and applies a 25% slow to enemy gods for 2.25s

This ability should be leveled third, after Shield Wall and before Defender of Olympus

Use this ability for the following circumstances:
- Disrupt Enemy Team Escape/Chase Potential.
- Getaway and Chase
- Clear Wave with Reach.

Confound is a pure CC ability, which forces enemies to walk in Athena's direction, while basic attacking.
The duration goes up by the level (1.0/1.25/1.5/1.75/2.0s).

This ability should be leveled first

Use this ability for the following circumstances:
- Force enemies to use Purification Beads.
- Initiate teamfights.
- To force an enemy to attack you, and not your teammate.

Shield Wall is an important ability for Athena and her combos. This ability has 2 states, the first, when the ability is activated (70/110/150/190/230. (+50% of your Magical Power)), and, after 2 seconds, when the ability disappears, it applies a second roll of damage (70/135/200/265/330. (+50% of your Magical Power))

This ability should be leveled second, after Confound and before Preemptive Strike.

Use this ability for the following circumstances:
- Main Damage Tool to attack Minions/Creeps with.
- Apply damage to the enemy team.
- Use it to zone choke points

Defender of Olympus certainly deserves its name. It allows you to select an ally, and you'll teleport to him, after 3,6 seconds, dealing area damage (350 / 430 / 510 / 590 / 670 (+90% of your Magical Power)), and it mitigates 20% of the damage taken by him. On top of that, it also makes you CC immune].

You should put 1 point in Defender of Olympus at level 5. From there, it should be leveled last.

Use this ability in the following circumstances:
- Deal insane burst damage.
- Become CC immune and avoid high amounts of CC.
- Force Enemies to Relocate.
- Become Globally present

Intro Pros/Cons Skills Items Relics Steps Combos Summary Other Guides Guide updates
Core item #1 - CDR / Mana / Movement
Shoes of Focus is the first core item. It gives +55 Magical power, 250 Mana, +18% Movement speed and +10% CDR.
These are the boots you'll always want to pick when playing Athena. The cdr it provides allows you to use your abilities more often, which is always an amazing thing to do. It also gives you some health, which helps suppress early game aggression issues. The power and movement speed make you more capable during combat situations as well as making it easier to escape.

Core #2 - Health / Hp5 / Passive
Gauntlet of Thebes is the second core item. It gives +300 Health, +15 Hp5 and an AoE Passive, that increases Physical and Magical Protection.
Athena plays best as a tank for her team, and since her playstyle is heavily focused on helping her teammates, she works best with items that increase stats for her allies. The health it provides allows you to stay in combat longer. You need this since Athena's can be relatively squishy, depending the enemy team combination. It also gives you some Hp5, which helps you in recovering some of the lost health, and this can help a lot. Lastly, this item's passive is a mix in between Sovereignty's and Heartward Amulet's, increasing efficiency

Aura Item #1 - Health / Protections / Passive
Sovereignty is the first aura item. It gives +250 Health, +45 Physical Protection and an AoE Passive, that increases Hp5 and Physical Protection.
Athena plays best as a tank for her team, and since her playstyle is heavily focused on helping her teammates, she works best with items that increase stats for her allies. The health it provides allows you to stay in combat longer. You need this since Athena's can be relatively squishy, depending the enemy team combination. It also gives you some Physical Protection, which helps suppress early game aggresion from assassins and hunters.

Aura item #2 - Health / Protections / CCR / MP5 / Passive
Heartward Amulet is the second aura item. It gives +250 Health, +55 Magical Protection and an AoE Passive, that increases Hp5 and Magical Protection.
Athena, like said before, plays best as a tank for her team, and since her playstyle is heavily focused on helping her teammates, she works best with items that increase stats for her allies. The health it provides allows you to stay in combat longer. You need this since Athena can be relatively squishy, depending in the enemy team combination. It also gives you some Magical Protection, which helps suppress middle/late game aggresion from mages, coupled with its passive/color], it's almost a no brainer.

Go To #1 - Protections / Health / Passive
Midgardian Mail is the first go to item. It gives +40 Physical Protection, +300 Health and a passive that slows down the enemy's attack speed and movement speed while they attack you.
Athena benefits from the multiple stats this item gives her, the protections giving her more survivability, the Health giving her more fuel to keep in the fight, coupled with the passive that allows her to slow down the enemy ADC and possibly the jungler really helps her continue her existance during long team fights or while being focused heavily by the enemy team.

Go To #2 - Protections / CDR / CCR / Passive
Spirit Robe is the second go to item. It gives +40 Physical and Magical Protections, +20% CCR, 10% CDR and a passive that gives damage mitigation.
Athena benefits from the multiple stats this item gives her, the protections giving her more survivability, the CDR and CCR giving her more frequent abilities and less time under CC, coupled with the passive that allows her to mitigate damage Really helps her become a power house to be reckoned with in the transition from mid to late game.

Intro Pros/Cons Skills Items Relics Steps Combos Summary Other Guides Guide updates
Relic #1
Heavenly Wings is a relic. It gives 20% Movement Speed, immunity to slows and, when upgraded, immunity to movement penalties to auto attacks.
Athena's team benefits from this in multiple ways. It allows her to make her team more mobile, for either closing the gap to a escaping enemy god, or to help herself and her team escape an enemy engagement. It's quite useful early game, especially considering possible early ganks to duo lane, may it be an enemy or an allied gank.

Relic #2
Horrific Emblem is a relic. It does a 30% Slow, 15% Attack Speed reduction and, when upgraded, -15% Damage Dealt and 25% Attack Speed reduction, all to enemy gods within 35 units.
Athena's team benefits from this in multiple ways. It allows her to make the enemy team less mobile, while also affecting their attack speed and damage done, which not only is a tool to help destroy, the now immobile enemy, as it decreases the efficacy of hunters and the damage done by mages. Overall, this is an amazing item that, when used correctly, can completely favor the team fight in your way.

Relic #3
Cursed Ankh is a relic. It takes away 50% Healing from the enemy team, and, when upgraded, enemies being healed receive +20% damage from your team.
Athena's team benefits from this in specific games, when they're playing againts healers. If healers are left unchecked, they'll just heal away all the damage your team deals, effectively winning engagements. Taking away half of that healing not only renders them useless, as it also helps your team burst through the enemy team, if you have this relic upgraded. This is a situational relic, and it works best while it's used together with Pestilence.

Relic #4
Magic Shell is a relic. It gives a shield based on your god level and, when upgraded, it gives affected allies 2 stacks of Block, which makes them immune to auto attacks.
Athena'steam benefits from this in a simple way, receiving a shield to soak up some damage and up to two auto attacks, which could seem like little, but this could be the difference between winning and loosing a teamfight. However, it's not enough to make it a truly important and must-have relic.

Relic #5
Phantom Veil is a relic. It allows your team to walk through player-made structures, and, when upgraded, gives affected allies +15% damage reduction.
Athena'steam benefits from this relic if the enemy has a lot of player made structures, like Ice Wall and Ring of Spears. It allows her and her team to pass through them as if they were not there. This relic is truly only usefull if you're facing a team that is utilizing those structures well enough. Situational Relic.

Intro Pros/Cons Skills Items Relics Steps Combos Summary Other Guides Guide updates

Combo #1 "Hi, How Are Ya?"
>>>>> >>>>>
This combo is one that you'll will use the most. Close in to the enemy with Preemptive Strike, applying your slow, if possible, and then use Shield Wall for the first tick of damage, then proceed to use Confound to drag enemies back into your Shield Wall so that they receive the second tick of damage and are forced to retreat, either from the damage itself or from the burst your allies will apply.

Combo #2 "Meet My Other Friends!" (Aggressive)
>>>>> >>>>> >>>>>
This combo is the one that you'll normally use when you use your ult to rotate aggressively. Use your Defender of Olympus on your ally, and, when you land, immediatly use Shield Wall, follow up with Confound to bring them back to the Shield Wall and already charge Preemptive Strike to attack them and slow them, to give your ally either a vantage at attacking them, or to retreat.

Combo #3 "In Between Olympus and Earth" (Defensive)
>>>>> >>>>> >>>>>
This combo is the one that you'll normally use when you use your ult to rotate defensively. Use your Defender of Olympus on your ally, and, when you land, immediatly use Confound, and go in the opposite direction of your ally. Follow up with Shield Wall to apply some damage and already charge Preemptive Strike to escape, either to your ally to continue helping him or to escape yourself.

Hi! how's blink on Athena support? X
ThePerfectPrism (53) | July 14, 2019 10:27am
Hi Foot! Blink isn't a bad relic on her, but I feel as thought other relics bring more to the table since Athena already has a lot of mobility in her kit.
Branmuffin17 (311) | July 14, 2019 12:50pm
Although she does, her dash has a somewhat long CD, and if you used it recently, there's no way you're going to catch a fleeing enemy. But you have a taunt that, if you can use it on them, allows your teammates time to catch up and secure a in this, Blink provides an additional way to help control...if you don't find a major need for other relics.
Kriega1 (107) | July 13, 2019 11:34am
Not bad, but not the most necessary relic on her. Early game the taunt won't be levelled much so it's definitely bad as a first relic on her.
Branmuffin17 (311) | July 13, 2019 11:54am
Agreed. 2nd relic can be great when you're chasing...catch up to the enemy, taunt them to bring them back to your team to secure a kill.

Stone of Binding should probably be your first item after boots because it's a bridge item that can be sold late. I'd also get Void Stone fairly early, either 2nd instead of stone or 3rd after sov. Other than that, looks good.
Branmuffin17 (311) | May 3, 2019 1:00pm
I would probably put a point into Preemptive Strike at level 3, rather than a 2nd level in Shield Wall. The mobility that provides is important, and adds additional CC to her kit.
Rumrunna102 | May 2, 2019 8:42pm
A few mistakes, its seems you mixed up CDR and CCR in a few of the Item descriptions and in the guide explaining them
ThePerfectPrism (53) | May 3, 2019 8:13am
Hi Rumrunna, I Double-Checked the items (Cuz I do mistake myself / forget to update certain informations after patch) but I didn't find the mistakes you referenced. Could you say the otems you meant?
Gulfwulf (68) | May 3, 2019 12:44pm
I did a once over and couldn't find any mistakes either. Then again, I didn't look very hard.

Prism! Where is your Celestial Legion Helm option?
Gulfwulf (68) | March 6, 2019 3:36pm
I've seen EmilZy build that on supports before. Is it really that useful for non-mid/solo?
Vini_sds (10) | March 6, 2019 4:00pm
EmilZy builds it when he wants to “carry” his games as a support, but I believe it only works for very aggressive supports (like Athena and Bacchus), especially when paired with Void Stone. You can also build Thebes after core to make up for the lack of Sov aura.

However, both items got nerfed in the last patch. Don’t know how that’s gonna affect this strategy.

What do you mean? It's right there *wink wink*

(Lol, all jokes aside, it wasn't on the guide but I've been experimenting with going Celestial Legion Helm + Genji's Guard in the place of Spirit Robe and Mantle of Discord, then selling boots for Mantle of Discord if the game does reach that point. So far I've been getting good results from that, but I haven't made up my mind on it yet. Maybe 2-3 more games and they'll transition to the main build)
Branmuffin17 (311) | January 22, 2019 5:00pm
Pris, good to see the guide updated...just in time for you to maybe adjust further for S6 in a week or two XD

Some current comments:
  • Note that you can now put comments in with the item listings at the top, for easy / quick reference. You don't have to, but it can be helpful.

  • I'd suggest keeping the relic out of the starting items lists. That relic choice is going to depend on preference to a degree, and you should just have Heavenly Wings listed with the other relics below.

  • At least situationally, you should include Genji's Guard (maybe), Heartward Amulet, and Witchblade. Witch's and Midgard's slow can stack, which can be particularly powerful. Heartward can still be functional against a team with 3 magical gods.

  • I know and understand the purpose for maxing Confound first, but I'm not sure I'd agree with that exact skill order. With Athena's high damage on Shield Wall, she can venture into the jungle and get some extra farm that way efficiently, if you level it a bit more. In addition, 0.25 seconds per rank is functional but not huge, and the damage potential on Shield can also be good for ganks and whatnot. If nothing else, I'd perhaps level Shield to 3 or 4 before switching over to Confound. Just a thought.

  • In your writeup for Preemptive Strike, you say to use the ability to disrupt enemy escape/chase, and for your own escape/chase potential. However, it also has good early wave-clear potential, especially in combination with Reach.

  • For Shield Wall, you say it's to clear the lane...but again, also for jungle camps. Just a wording choice, perhaps, but you can generalize and just say minions and it'll cover them all.

  • For Sovereignty, note also that the physical protection helps against minion and objective damage (e.g. towers).

  • You need to update the stats you state for Oni Hunter's Garb, as they've changed significantly.
ThePerfectPrism (53) | January 22, 2019 7:05pm
  • How does one do that?
  • I'll fix that
  • I was torn between putting Genji's, but I feel like, if someone is coming to my guide to learn more about Athena, maybe they're a newer players, that could maybe go out of their way to get an attack by a magical god just so they get that 3s from the passive, and that's why I didn't put it. I thought Amule was already in the situational, I'll adapt. What you say about Witch + Midgard is interesting, but I feel like using both at the same time would be to cover a more AA-Based team (Let's say Ao Kuang jg + Xbalanque adc + Neith mid), so it's a bit too much "specific", but I'll test it out if I have a chance and see it's effect.
  • I feel like the leveling on those two abilities depend a lot about the jungle meta in the game. Considering the current one, which I've been ganked several times prior to level 6, Getting extra points in Confound seems a bit more logical to me at the moment. If you use that site that cheecks the pior version of websites, if you check out this guide, you'll see that I used to say to level up Shield Wall first, as duo lane was more "Babysit the ADC and make sure he gets ahead". But I do agree that, generally, getting 2-3 points in Shield Wall to then go to Confound is more interesting.
  • It is really good to lane clear, but it's also quite risky, and I don't want newer players to think that they have to dive to lane clear, so that's why I omitted that scenario.
  • I'll change the wording
  • Interesting
  • But I literally did the item thing based on the current description! Are you referring to the S6 patch?
Branmuffin17 (311) | January 22, 2019 8:45pm
Look carefully at the item listing in the builder. You'll see the notes section.

You can leave Genji out if you really want. For magical prots, Oni, Pest, and balanced prots like your Spirit/Mantle/Thebes are plenty in general.

For Midgard + Witch, it was an example of good synergy/function against a specific comp, as you say. But I don't mean to use that as an example...just that Witch should be an optional item listing.

On using the dash and Reach to help clear wave, after they use their abilities on the wave, you can run right in, dash back toward YOUR side, and then reach through the whole wave. It's a functional strat if you feel you need the dash at level 1.

Your writeup of Oni, when I read it, said 200 or 250 health and some other things that were off, I think. It looks okay now at first glance.
Kriega1 (107) | January 22, 2019 7:36pm
For Oni hunters you should mention how the damage mitigation can't be countered by titans/exe/demonic/obs shard or qins/reaver.
Kriega1 (107) | January 22, 2019 6:50pm
Do u have a guide/description/blog that I can link to on attack speed (in attack chains) /power scaling (in attack chains)/basic attack progression? (both physical and magical) Or is it included in one of your guides? Because if there isn't it would probably be a good idea to make one.

After all, we are doing Hi Rez's job one step at a time.
Branmuffin17 (311) | January 22, 2019 7:03pm

It's not directly addressed in my guides as a whole, though I talk about it situationally in different god guides and as examples in like the Qin's section of the Items guide.

I can probably address that. What specifically were you thinking? Just describe attack progressions, basic attack scaling for phys (100%) / mag (20%), etc.?

What would you build for a bruiser Athena?

Last night I went:

Shoes of Focus
Void Stone
Soul Reaver
Mantle of Discord
Rangda's Mask

As you can see I went a bit to the troll-side of the spectrum
Branmuffin17 (311) | September 10, 2018 8:35pm
Pris isn't on here much anymore. If you were going bruiser, what mode?

Obviously Rangda's is pretty troll, but the rest of your items aren't bad.

Here's what I'd consider if in teamfight modes:

Yo Pris,

So even though you're not participating in the contest, I'm commenting anyway because that's what I do.

S5 update...
  • FYI, 500 gold for 6% MS is extremely inefficient. You basically want to start with Guardian's, + 1 of 2 directions...1) get an early start on Gauntlet of Thebes via Glowing Emerald, and finish up with some potions, or 2) get Chalice of Healing and either potions or Chalice of the Oracle if you want early vision...if you get Oracle early, you can even do an immediate run to drop some Wards in enemy territory to see how they're starting, then back to base to refill the Chalice.

  • I personally feel that Hide of the Urchin shouldn't be's a great item, but don't know if it should be something to get in every build. You already have 1 dual-protections item in Thebes, and another dual protections item in either Mantle of Discord or Spirit Robe might be better in some ways. Also, in later encounters, you're going to be not only taking initial damage, but probably look to stay those cases, it won't allow the shield to regenerate. I feel that the new Urchin is best for gods that get in, do damage, and get out, which does allow the shield to come back online.

  • I think Jade Emperor's Crown is a better early-game item as a strategic alternate to Sovereignty...later, that 30 power drop aura is going to be less effective. Also, Talisman of Energy has some potential, but not sure it's always a better choice than some other physical offerings.

  • In your "if there are more magical gods," Spirit Robe isn't really a magical god's part of that dual-protections thing mentioned above. Not sure why you've listed it as such. As for Shogun's Kusari, it's now a much more situational item, due to the drop in magical protection it received in S4. It's still great for objective push, but I'm thinking that Void Stone is perhaps a better general option in that spot (especially if you find yourself in-lane with a partnered magical ADC)...or even Heartward Amulet (or Genji's Guard).

  • As for situationals, since you can force enemies to hit you, don't you think some physical counter items deserve a place here? You're really missing some key counters... Hide of the Nemean Lion, Midgardian Mail, Witchblade...those are all good options. Although very situational, Spectral Armor is another, since if enemies build crit, you're very likely to take some of that damage...also leading to the potential use of Shield of Thorns.

  • Finally, might be personal preference, but since you get some lowered CD from each level of your ult, and with consideration to the larger map and your ability to be basically anywhere,
why do you delay all additional levels of your ult til the end? I'd say it's more important early before the entire team is grouping up, at least getting a couple of levels in earlier.
ThePerfectPrism (53) | February 23, 2018 2:51pm
Hey Bran

1st -> I'm aware it's inefficient, but Athena is really slow. Her dash helps her with her slowness but not being able to have Mana Potions or Chalice of Mana, I'd rather have some more speed over extra health early on. Although I think it falls under preference.

2nd -> I guess I should be transparent and say it's one of my flaws always getting Hide of the Urchin. I just love the item so much that, for me, it's difficult to play without it. But Athena can get in and get out in many ways. There's the Blink Rune Athena play-style which isn't that bad!

3rd -> Jade Emperor's Crown is meant more to power down assassins and warriors. 30 Power might not look like a lot but when you're playing a warrior, you're gonna feel it (At least I feel it).

4th -> LMAO I don't know what happened for me to freckin forget [Heartward Amulet]] existed. Whoops

5th -> I personally think Hide of the Nemean Lion is too situational. Like if you have two heavy physical auto attackers (Let's say Apollo + Kali) then I'm totally in for it. I didn't include it and Midgardian Mail in the guide cuz it's something you should have a instinct for it. But it is a major flaw and I will fix it.

6th -> I like to up Athena's ult all the up in the last slots cuz people don't expect you to have the extra seconds of Confound, or a harder hitting Shield Wall earlier. Also, this is in CQ in mind. IMHO, you shouldn't Defender of Olympus into an engagement, unless there's another ally going in for a gank, or if an ally is in a close call and needs an extra hand, an those are somewhat rare cases. Also this normally applies only to ganks in the solo lane, reducing even more the need for a faster CD. Also, Shoes of Focus, Breastplate of Valor and Mantle of Discord can help you with that.

Thank you for this bran s2

Branmuffin17 (311) | June 19, 2017 11:34am
Hey Pris,

The updated coding looks great. The yellow/black theme is very popping.

Here's some feedback on the guide in its current iteration:
  • Like Zodiac, I'm curious what you think of the current state of the aura items. I'm really unhappy about the Sovereignty nerf, in particular, even if it may have been necessary. I still think, in most situations, it's still an early core item, but again, your thoughts would be interesting to hear. I'm less sold on Gauntlet of Thebes though...almost think other items that provide high health with other utility ( Winged Blade, Mail of Renewal, etc.) will now find a bit more use (for general supports overall).

  • On your "if more phys/magical gods" options, I'm not fully sold on Jade Emperor's Crown. I know you still have yet to complete your items section, so will be interested in hearing your explanation there. I'd think that Breastplate of Valor would be more core than that at the late stage of a match. No general problems with Shogun's Kusari, but I would still consider that'd want to be careful, because the Solo laner could also pick this up in their build, so you'd need to watch for that, thus making it situational. Rather than "if there are more mag/phys gods," I would just keep the "important situationals" altogether, and explain item choices in the body of the guide...especially since, either way, you're basically calling Hide of the Urchin core (use in either case) why isn't it just in the core group?

  • For your combos, looks like you're working to update that as well, but formatting this for a bit more clarity would be great. The title of the combo is fine, but a quick, highlighted phrase detailing its general use (Function: Retreat from a dangerous situation.) would help. Obviously "Evacuate!" would be used for escape function when outnumbered/losing situation...

  • On that 2nd combo, I would consider talking about the reverse as well...the standard first hit of Shield Wall, then Confounding them so they also take that 2nd hit...

  • Another combo not currently listed would be a full committed initiation of Preemptive Strike -> Shield Wall -> Confound.

  • On the abilities, it would also be helpful, on a technical basis, to help newer players understand WHY you level skills the way you do. Yes, you level Shield Wall first, but telling them it's important specifically to help your ADC with early lane clear to outpush (and also when you rotate to quickly clear camps) is good. And WHY you would level Confound 2nd, rather than Preemptive Strike, when Strike provides damage, an increasing slow, and a lower CD, while Confound only increases taunt time by 0.25 seconds each level...things like that are great to discuss.

  • You state to put 1 point in Defender of Olympus at level 5, then level it last, but that's not reflected in your skill order at the top.

  • Also in Defender, might be good to clarify a bit say it mitigates 20% of the damage taken to your ally, but stating that this mitigation happens during the 4.2 second channel time.

  • Oh and back to the top...showing at least one or two "full build" examples would be great.
Hope this is helpful.
ThePerfectPrism (53) | June 19, 2017 11:46am
Hey Bran

Like always, your reviews make me feel like I'm in a Wikipedia page, so let's begin.

1. From what I've played recently, and watched in the SPL, ppl are sold on Gauntlet + Heartward, but they deviated about their opinion on Sov, so I'm kinda surprised to see you're the exact opposite.

2. I like Jade Emeperor's Crown for it's really high physical defense (60) and it's passive. I'm a sucker for passives like this, and Void Stone's, so it's kinda the major factor for that item choice tbh. Breastplate of Valor is one of my favorite items in the game, but I've noticed that every time I've built it, I lack health, and that's why I decided to go with Jade Emperor's, cuz it gives almost the same physical defense stat, health, magical power and THE PASSIVE. I'll look in another magical defense item that can be used instead of Shogun's Kusari, but I enjoy it in the support since most of the game, you end up sticking with the adc. I don't put Hide of the Urchin in the core part cuz it's something you can change. My situationals are meant to be "Changes, if needed, to the final items of the build", not the core ones.

3. Yeah I'm redoing combos completely.

4. The idea of the Confound -> Shield Wall is for newer player to get used to this type of CC, and how to deal damage with Athena. At the initial time, I though it was quite logical that, after some matches, you should start using the reverse, but since a lot of people told me to talk about the reverse, during the duration of this guide, I shall do it in the next patch.

5. I'm still updating the skills on the main bar, I'm trying to find the most efficient way (yet) to level up, so yeah. Also, I'll do the updates you've suggested, they seem legit.

6. Same as above.

7; For sure

It did ;)
Branmuffin17 (311) | June 19, 2017 11:59am
Rock on Pris.

That's interesting...I haven't been following the here's my thought process on it.

Specifically, to me, Heartward Amulet has always been the awkward brother of Sovereignty. Since the reemergence/revision to Sov/Heart (and the addition of Thebes), Sov has been a strong pick. My reasons (again not happy with the change for the upcoming patch 4.11 this week) for thinking it might still be a regular pickup:
  • Still cheap, which is really important early-game.

  • For a Support, provides almost the same physical protection (just -5, for a total of 55 physical protection). Not only is it + the health helpful against the ADC (provided they're a hunter), minions, and objectives, but the more common comp of 3 phys / 2 mag still makes it functional overall. The HP5 is also important as Supports often back less than others, and the sustain it provides keeps it relevant.

  • When just considering function for the owner, 55 physical protection and the HP5 is more functional than Heartward Amulet's 65 magical protection + MP5.

  • Basically, it's going to provide less team protection there, but it doesn't make the other aspects less needed for a Support early-game. Maybe the change makes it something that could be replaced late-game...but I still absolutely see it being functional early.

Regarding Jade...okay, those are good points...and I guess, especially in later teamfights... Confounding multiple enemies will decrease their phys damage to you...and at 2 seconds at level 5, it means you might get hit 2/3/4 times by an individual enemy...subtracting that 30 power will definitely be functional for her...less so for other gods, but maybe that's a good call for Athena. I'll have to try it out.
