INTRODUCTION

Welcome to my guide for Artio, The Bear Goddess
My name is Big Damage. I am a dedicated Smite fan and spend most of my time playing Ranked Conquest, Ranked Joust and some Assault. In Conquest I mostly enjoy playing Solo and Support, however this build is just for Artio in Solo, Support and Joust.
This is my 4th SmiteFire guide, and constructive criticism is always welcome. Before I start I would like to add credits to Zilby and Mowen for the templates and notes on how to implement bbcode, this guide would not be possible without it!

Without further ado, onto the guide!

PROS AND CONS

Pros:
  • Multiple types of CC that combo well together
  • Strong passive utilized by all in teamfights
  • The most annoying cripple in the game
  • Mid game teamfight one of the strongest of any Guardian
  • Heal can help stay in lane early game
Cons:
  • Heavily reliant on CDR
  • Very mana hungry
  • Falls off in terms of damage late game, although still a nuisance with CC
  • Stance switching can be tricky to get hang of
  • No true ultimate or CC immunity

WHAT TO BUILD, WHY AND WHEN

In this section I will go over what items are strong on Artio, why they are useful and when to purchase them


Item 1
Shoes of Focus

Artios' style of play heavily revolves around spamming your abilities in a coordinated manner, therefore of the early game boot choices Shoes of Focus is the top pick, giving you a higher mana pool and CDR to get those abilities off more often and power to give them the extra kick of damage. This should go with out saying but getting these first or second should always be essential on your build.
Item 2
Gauntlet of Thebes

A common but noteworthy item, that nonetheless needs to be mentioned here. Hands down, Gauntlet of Thebes is a high contender for strongest single defence item in the game, only being challenged by Mantle of Discord, and with good reason. You will need to get this either first item before boots or second item after boots to make the most of this due to the need for stacks. 50 protections, 300HP and 15HP5 with an aura of 10 protections bringing it to 60 is as useful as it sounds.
Item 3
Breastplate of Valor

Another item powering Artios' need for mana and CDR, there are very few builds where I would not consider this a viable item. Breastplate of Valor can be purchased at any point in the game, but considering it's usefulness to Artio and other essential items needed earlier, I would say in the Support role around 4th or 5th item, however in Solo and Joust you can grab this as one of your first items after boots without a problem.
Item 4
Shogun's Kusari

In the same boat as Breastplate of Valor but as a Magical Defence instead, Shogun's Kusari is incredibly useful for helping your ADC especially but also the rest of your team getting more DPS with an attack speed buff. This is also very useful on objectives such as the Fire Giant or Bull Demon King. Then there is also the CDR and MP5 which Artio really appreciates. Another note is that Genji's Guard can do the same job but better if you're not playing a Support role or if none of your team really uses Auto Attacks. This can be purchased at any time in any role, as it is not only a strong Support item but a decent general defence item.
Item 5
Mystical Mail

Here is a bit of an oddball, but for aggressive play that Artio is suited to, you will get a lot of damage off with this, not only because you are always going to be in range when fighting with your abilities for the damage to tick, but because each of your abilities reduce their protections by a percentage you will be doing more than you even expected. I would very rarely suggest this in the Support role, it could work if your team was heavily snowballing, but for Solo and Joust you can pick this up any time after your core items, so that you have the CDR, MP% and tankiness to put this item to good use.
Item 6
Void Stone

The longer that Artio stays in a fight with someone, the more damage they will take through reduced percentage protections due to Decompose. So being able to stack it on top of a 10% reduced protection aura is very powerful. This is also why in my Solo build and some of my Joust builds Soul Reaver for the additional 10% pen, although not utilised by the team unfortunately. On another note of items, a team mate with Void Shield can also stack with this passive, reducing protections even further in a team fight. Void Stone can be picked up any time after your core items, and personally I would build in the mid-late game, around 4th item onwards.
Item 7
Talisman of Energy

A strange pick, but synergises with the passive on Artios' ult. although not very strong in the current meta (as of Smite 7.4), however it is a fun "fill" item that is helpful for Artios' need for MP5 to stay in the fight and movement speed to keep sticking to targets, as the passive in shapeshifter gives the same stats, having an item to stack it higher is always useful. Due to this being a fill item it's placement in a build order is not very important, so once your essential items are out of the way purchase as you see fit.
Item 8
Ethereal Staff

I have covered in the previous items fairly consistently that Artio has percentage penetration that her team can all use against targets that she hits. So a reasonable item for Artio to use is a damage tank item, that can fit well in all working roles for her, Ethereal Staff. Gaining stacks by hitting enemies with abilities the same as her 2 passives, stealing additional health and mana will keep you in the fight longer and do more damage, on top of that having 90 power to hit a little harder with your percentage pen is always appreciated.

ABILITIES AND COMBOS



Passive - Decompose
As I have briefly covered in relation to how it works with certain items above, this is a straight forward passive. You hit the enemy, they have their magical and physical defence reduced by 2%, stacking up to 8 times equalling a maximum of 16%. Stacked with a Void Stone purchased by yourself this increases to 28% reduced magical protections, with a Void Shield purchased by a team mate this will stack to 31% reduced physical protections. A solid passive that is easy to use without having to think much about it.


1 - Energy Surge / Maul Prey
2 small range cone attacks, useful for just poking while in close range or gaining procs with either of your passives. The Druid stance cone does less damage, but gives a small heal to you and nearby allies, the Bear stance does more damage but sadly only does that.


2 - Entangling Vines / Ferocious Roar
This is the non damage CC that makes Artio a pure nuisance to fight against. Artio becomes the bane of existence for gods who rely on leaps and high mobility abilities, such as Bastet or King Arthur. For example here, if Bastet leaped into a group expecting to jump back out, you activate your cripple which lasts for 6 seconds at max rank, within the 6 seconds you can switch stance without it being cancelled and therefore when the 6 seconds is over you can stun them, preventing them from leaving the fight for a total of 7.4 seconds which is an unbelievable amount of time. On top of the annoying CC, while in the Entangling Vines at max rank they have 25% less power, so their damage shouldn't be able to put a dent in anyone, while the Ferocious Roar also buffs your protections by 30, which is useful mid fight at any time.


3 - Life Tap / Heavy Charge
Life Tap is generally the main wave clear that Artio will use, but it is also useful for chasing down kills, if someone is trying to escape and you get the first hit of your Life Tap on them the chances are they will not escape, because they are then slowed by 10% making it easier to hit the rest of the ability on them which will result in a root for 1 second. If they manage to say leap away once you caught up to them rooted, Heavy Charge now comes into play, you sprint and charge for 3s at increased movement speed, making it difficult for any enemy to escape, Heavy Charge also does a lot of damage and applies a slow if the enemy is hit.


4 / Ultimate - Shapeshift
Because of the stance switching, instead of an actual ability aside from switching stance, Artio has a second passive. Artio gains stacks of "invigoration" under the Shapeshift ability, giving her movement speed and MP5 per stack, stacking up to 8 times. This is useful for keeping her in the fight for longer and hitting more abilities, however due to stacks only lasting 4 seconds it is very hard to keep the stacks going unless you are landing all abilities the moment they come off of cooldown.


Combos


This is your standard full ability combo for starting in Druid form. Here you will initiate by slowing with Life Tap and hopefully procing the root as well, then once you have closed the gap crippling them with Entangling Vines, while the ability is active, hit them with your Energy Surge and before it finishes switch to Bear stance and stun with your Ferocious Roar, follow this up with Maul Prey and while they try to escape hit them or catch up to them with Heavy Charge.


This is your standard full ability combo for starting in Bear form. Here you will initiate by running into the enemy with Heavy Charge although be careful because once this is down you don't have much of an escape, then stun the enemy with Ferocious Roar and follow up with Maul Prey, then quickly switch stance and active Entangling Vines and hit them with Life Tap to keep them in range, and finally hit them with Energy Surge.


This is a very complex combo, and designed in an ideal world where situational events don't happen in game but think of this as more of what your aim is to do while comboing your abilities with Artio, because you want to stack your percentage penetration as much as possible for your high damage abilities (Bear stance). Here you will Blink Rune into the enemy and stun them with Ferocious Roar, then switch stance and activate your Entangling Vines and hit them with Energy Surge followed up buy Life Tap and a switch back into Bear stance to hit your Heavy Charge to slow them and finish with Maul Prey to do the most damage possible.

GAMEPLAY AND TEAMPLAY

This part of the guide will cover what to do at different stages of a Conquest match, and how you should play as part of a team to win the game

Early Game / Laning Phase
If you are playing with an early aggression ADC such as Ullr or in a Joust with an early power team, then be aggressive and try to secure first blood while still farming, however if not then play back and farm safely. For Solo just farm safely until you can come online enough to start boxing efficiently with the opposing Solo laner and try to secure Totem of Ku.

Mid Game / "Skirmish" Fighting
Now in the mid game you should have enough of your kit and build online to be initiating the fights and using your kit effectively to win the fights for your team, take objectives and continually ward to get a lead for your team to snowball into the late game.

Late Game / Teamfighting
The strength of a damaging initiator that Artio had in the mid game will have fallen off by now, but you still have strong hard and soft CC in your kit, and with the defences built now you should be able to be an annoyance for the enemies to deal with either way. Continue to ward and push objectives to try and win the game.

CONCLUSION // SUMMARY

Artio is an aggressive tank that really punishes enemy carries for making mistakes, I hope this build was useful, thank you for reading!
