Introduction

Hey guys,
this is my 2nd guide here on smitefire. This time I will show you my build for Ymir.

As you can see in the itembuild this is NOT a fulltank build but still we get enough HP5, health and protection to tank and engage most of the time.
Since the Patch on Dec 27 (Ver. 0.1.1267.2) Ymir's Frost Breath is really strong. That's why I go for focus and cooldown.

Skills

Ice Wall

Ymir will place a wall of ice which blocks enemies. Pressing the button again will remove the wall.
  • Be aware that enemy gods with jump abilities (such as Bakasura, Odin, Bastet, ...) can jump above your walls.
  • Do only use this if you are sure you block your enemy. Using this in the wrong places can block your teammates following an enemy god.
  • You can use this to catch up to an enemy god and use Frost Breath afterwards.
  • If Anhur is your laning partner you can use your walls for his Impale
  • Trying to escape use the wall directly in front of you (until the wall is created you have past it)

Glacial Strike

Always use this after you have frozen your enemy with Frost Breath. Glacial Strike causes magical damage and reduces the target's movementspeed by 50% for 4 seconds. It also causes Frostbite

Frost Breath

This is Ymir's strongest ability. All enemies in front of him get stunned for a maximum of 3 seconds and receive magical damage as well as Frostbite.
In 3 seconds an AD god should be able to kill nearly all type of gods, which makes this stun so important.

Shards of Ice

Ymir's ultimate does really much damage even though it's quite hard to hit the enemy in early game. Shards of ice will cause magic damage to all enemies near by.
Always use this after your Frost Breath and Glacial Strike.
If you got a high utility god which can jump you wont be able to hit him in the beginning (your stun duration is too small).

Frostbite

Frostbite is Ymir's passive. When Ymir hits an enemy with his abilities the enemy god will get a debuff. Ymir's basic-attacks now will cause 50% more damage.

Items

As i said above this guide is for a cooldown and focus Ymir.

Mark of the Vanguard helps especially in the beginning when enemy gods cant't do that much damage. Besides it's great against enemy minions which also will do 5 less damage.

I still prefer the Reinforced Boots even though there are the Boots of Celerity giving you cooldown reduction and focus. In my opinion you need the HP5 and MP5 as well as the Magical and Physical Protection. Besides we will get maximum cooldown reduction and focus with the other items.

Chronos' Pendant is one of the most important items in my build. It grants you more focus, MP5 and magical power plus: on lvl 3 it reduces your cooldowns by 25%. It is really annoying for any enemy god playing against a Ymir that can use his stun every few (I think with full build 11) seconds. Especially when the stun duration is 3 seconds.

To get more cooldown reduction but also to don't forget our protection and focus I buy Breastplate of Valor next. It will grant us a 25% cooldown reduction as well as 75 physical protection and 30 focus (the mana isn't that important).

We already got our maximum (35%) in cooldown reduction now but still we need some more focus. And of course I tried to increase our defensive too. That's why I buy Bracer of Replenishment which grants us 15 HP5 , 9 MP5 and 30 focus as well as an aura giving us (and our allies) 20 HP5 and 10 MP5

My last item is Bulwark of Hope which will increase our focus up to 100 and also gives us more health and magical protection. Moreover it gives us a shield when our health is low.

Actives

You can't say which item is the best because it depends on the enemy gods. Playing against an Ares or Hades it might be useful to buy Purification Beads or Aegis Amulet.

I always buy Heavenly Agility which helps you to catch up with an enemy god to freeze him as well as protecting yourself and your lanemate.

Creeping Curse is quite nice when using your ultimate to prevent enemies from escaping.
Use it shortly before your ultimate.

Pros / Cons

Pros:

  • Really long stun ( Frost Breath)
  • Short cooldowns will grant you to freeze more often
  • Because of your high focus you often can escape easily
  • Useful with nearly every god as laningpartner

Cons:
  • You might die a few times in teamfights

How to play

During the early-game your stun isn't that powerful but still you can kill some squishy gods if you get a good laning partner.
Try to use your stun whenever a god comes too close to you. If you know the chat-commands use them before engaging (such as VA1-3). Try to get hit by the enemy god before freezing him. That will cause your minions to attack him (which will do quite good damage in the beginning).
Try to annoy your enemy gods as much as possible with your Frost Breath and Glacial Strike.

In the mid-game you can start towerdiving (but be careful with enemy stuns). Make sure you attack the enemy god before your laning partner does. Otherwise the tower will attack your partner which will often cause his dead.
Use your wall to catch up to enemy gods trying to run away and stun them with your Frost Breath. If your laning partner can hold the lane 1v2 you can go ganking in the middle lane (only do that if your mid got problems there). Otherwise hold your lane and try to freeze enemies especially when they are in your towerrange.

In the late-game when your team groups up you should try to get one or two enemy gods by using your wall and freeze, so your team can kill them easily. Be careful in teamfights even though you have quite much health and protection you aren't a fulltank which means you can die getting focused by all enemy gods.
If your carries haven't got enough lifesteal yet tank the firegiant or gold fury so your team get an advantage.

Tips

  • Playing with Anhur your Ice Wall is another option for his Impale
  • Use your Creeping Curse shortly before your ultimate
  • Playing against melee squishy gods always freeze them when they are going to attack your minions
  • Try to get hit by an enemy god in early game before freezing him. That will cause your minions to attack him.
  • You often can freeze enemy gods even if they are up in the air ( Xbalanque, Sun Wukong)
  • Your Ice Wall is really strong in the jungle blocking the whole path
  • You often can escape with your Ice Wall in the jungle

This guide is alright.

Things that could use improvement

I feel like this guide was rushed a little compared to your other one, hopefully you edit this one more and try to add sections. Overall, this guide is weaker compared to your other guide, but I'm being really lenient on this guide. Please add more.

As for the second build, I too have played around with boots of celarity on him... however, I've found the hp5, defense, and (most importantly) the -30% stun duration, is just too good to pass up. What I do instead is take sprint and the haste banner to stay mobile and deal with any slows: as a melee being able to counter slows is more important than raw speed, since you will be slowed much more often than a ranged character... the -30%s cc reduction is too good to pass up for the same reasons. As a tank you WANT cc to be used on you, rather than a teammate, so dealing with it effectively (and passively) is very strong.

Now, if you wanted to play ymir more like a "control mage" than a tank, those boots could work: you'd have to remember to stay out of the line of fire, but the ability to position 3 second aoe stuns, huge aeo slows, and a 7 second impassible wall anywhere in the fight is something (perhaps) worth the sacrifice in survivability. I wouldn't try it in a pub game, though, unless you have a very good tank who you can trust to soak up the cc you'd normally be eating.

Good guide all around, thanks for sharing!

;D

I think your starting items are very strong on the non-conquest game modes, I always start him that way.

However, your argument that "vanguard and boots have MR" is silly: that's 30 MR total, way too little for a melee tank like Ymir. If you haven't gotten face rolled by mages yet then you haven't faced any good ones... think of it this way, since most teams get/have some magic pen you essentially have NO extra MR from items. You simply cannot tank magic damage effectively with this build.

Also, Chronos pendant AND breastplate is way too expenseive, and way too much CDR and MP5... YMIR doesn't spam his abilities, he simply needs a good mana pool to constantly cast in teamfights. I think breastplate, with the armor and 550 mana, is the clear winner over pendant. 50 mp does very little for his damage output, and the 25mp5 is WAY overkill, and will still have you falling short in early team fights where having more spells now (mana) is far better than having more spells later (waiting for regen). I recommend ditching chronos entirely and getting breastplate first.

In both items the 25 cdr is a massive boost to his team fight utility, but since he can cast more spells faster mana is the better choices vs mp5. Since the max cdr is 40, and jungle buff gives 15, you can get max cdr with ONE of these items... so getting both his a huge waste of gold. If you do nothing else to this very good guide, please consider this. Chronos is a waste of money on characters unless they can really benefit from the 25mp5: breastplate is almost always the better choice, particularly for melee characters.

Two of the strongest MR items on YMIR are stone of gaia (for regen tanking), and void stone (for extra damage)... either of these items would be FAR better than chronos pendant after you get your breastplate. You want damage, void stone gives you same mp, reduces defenses, gives focus, AND gives 50 MR.... as opposed to what, 25mp5? stone of gaia will give you enough mana regen for ymir's purposes AND give you incredible health regen on top of that.

TL;DR REPLACE CHRONOS PENDANT! :-P

Ok thx I will try this instead of the Stone of Gaia and will edit the guide later on.

I usually buy Creeping Curse when I have a partner without any stun on my lane AND the enemies have no jumps. creeping curse is just for the time I haven't got 100 focus. In the beginning it is quite hard to hit enemies with your ult cause even if they cant jump they just can go out of your ult.
Of course later with 3 seconds stun and the slow they won't be able to escape anymore and creeping curse isn't that important anymore but still you can use it to escape or help any teammate killing or fleeing.

Thx for the feedback. Well I haven't had any problems yet. Besides Mark of the Vanguard and Reinforced Boots both give magic and physic protection but I have created another build which changes the Reinforced Boots with Boots of Celerity (which doesn't waste so much cdr% but also doesn't give protection). That's why I placed the Stone of Gaia giving you a really good HP5 and magic protection. Besides you gain more movement speed.
And as I said in my guide its NOT a fulltank Ymir. But a little bit more offensive with less protection.

Having both Bp of Valor and Chronos Pendant puts your Cooldown reduction over the max, and wastes some of the stat. Not getting Magic protection early - you have it as your last item - which you rarely even see in most games as ymir, will result in you getting fried by most mages.
