Introduction

Janus by far has to be one of the most unique gods released by smite. However, he is a bit tricky to use. it isn't merely aim and pwn. He requires a lot of precision. From my experience, the jungle is vital to getting used to the abilities he has. If you don't get fluid with them, there is a few things that can happen, but i will get into those in the abilities section. Janus is probably my favorite god at the moment and i hope you begin to like him too. ;)

This is my first Guide, so keep that in mind (I'm open to corrections and the such).

Pros / Cons

Pros:
-Insane mobility
-Decent dmg at mid-game
-Very helpful for team

Cons:
-Very squishy
-Can be very slow without Threshold
-"Unstable Vortex" can be very hard to aim

Items

My main build may seem a little bad in some respect, but there is a reason for most of it. This is what works for me. Whatever you don't like, feel free to experiment and move things around or change it all together. This is just a guide to get new Janus users on their feet. If your a pro with Janus then you can do whatever works for you.

Meditation
This is insanely useful if you want to stay and your enemy's butt. Janus is not too hard on his mana, but having this can be a lifesaver. If you find you don't really need it anymore, then upgrade it to salvation. I use Janus as a assistant or helper in some regard. I can get kills easily, but I find it is better to help out the team more than killing everything and having no team left to back you up. So having mana on hand when needed is a smart move for this god.

Shoes of Focus
These are better than the other shoes because Janus is soooo much better with cooldown. it gives you your portals faster for when you need a escape, or for a lot of ACME styled kills. movement speed is also needed badly. Janus can feel very sluggish without a Threshold.

Chronos' Pendant
This is for the cooldown and the power. Once you get this you will have max cooldown and get your ult in 54 seconds. which is well worth it.

Warlock's Sash
Janus can at times feel like a twig, this will help get rid of that issue. No more instant death ganks... well, at least you will stand a much better chance. Just remember to get the stacks up on this as fast as you can.

Bancroft's Talon
This is really important is you got a tank on the enemy team who loves paying you a visit. Such as a Hades or Ares. You also get much needed POWER and lifesteal.

Obsidian Shard
This gives you more penetration and raw power. good for melting dem' tanks.

Rod of Tahuti
This is the cherry on top. once this last item is in your build, you will be owning hunters, mages and especially assassins. it gives you basically a pure damage increase. So your Unstable Vortex is going to instantly clear waves and hurt most gods quite a bit.

Skills

Janus probably without a doubt has the weirdest skills of any smite character. sure Osiris has his passive Fragmented, but Janus has Portal, which can be put on the ground or wall; a first of its kind in smite. So here is a brief description and walkthrough of Janus's skill kit.

Passive: Passages
This charges up your abilities every time you pass a threshold or go through a portal.
It is best to use Threshold over portals to charge up. However, a portal used for traveling is also alright. you just don't want to pop a portal under yourself just to get his passive. It is sure death.

Portal
This is the bread and butter of Janus. It is probably my favorite ability right behind Janus's ultimate. It allows you go through walls and sink enemies into it. The important thing though is to learn thicknesses of the map. The reason being Portal can only go so far through a wall. So, aiming through a huge chunk of map and being angry that you could not get away is not the game's problem. I usually use portal on edges of corners so I can can get away or simply travel faster. If I'm just clearing waves, I use it to clean up after using Unstable Vortex or for sinking an enemy god. Good for saving a friend if they are running away (your team will not go through the portal thankfully, only through walls, not the ground... thankfully.)

Unstable Vortex
This will be your friend when clearing out huge clusters or a simple minion wave. The only problem is it doesn't shoot straight. So if you are not precise with aiming this, you could only hit either 2 or half of a wave. Usually you won't clear everything so afterwards I use Portal afterwards to clean up the rest.

Threshold
This is probably the most invaluable skill right next to portal for getting out. it will give you and your allies, while at the same time slowing enemies. I use this a lot to charge before sending out a Unstable Vortex. It helps keep you out of danger thanks to the speed and it can save a comrade thanks to its speed boost/ slow combo. Use this whenever it is available so you can keep the passive up.

Through Space and Time
This is the most OP ability that does very little damage. It will make your allies thankful or even laugh and your enemies pissed. This aimed right can either 1) allow you to kill a almost dead enemy or 2) travel across half the map in a near instant, with allies might I add. This works both directions, so if you got friends at base you can send a bunch of portal their way. I was able to get an Odin to my tower from base almost instantly. This is invaluable if you need to get a team to a location VERY fast. It also it good for getting a ally/s out of a bind in a team fight. Has potential to either set up a full blown assault or a fast retreat. Just like a Blitzkrieg.

Ranked Play

Not available yet in ranked Play, will be updated once available in ranked.

Creeping / Jungling

Janus has full potential to be a jungler if need be. Since he can get anywhere fast, he is great for ganks or finishing off a fleeing enemy. In the beginning though, he does not do too much damage to groups. but once the first 2 items are bought, then he can clear all day.

He is great for a lot of applications. ganking, clearing, saving, you name it. Janus is quite flexible in his roles. unlike Freya or Nu Wa, common mage junglers, Janus can get around much more faster in the jungle since walls are well sized in the jungle. So your escape will be insanely good as long as you have portal on hand.

Team Work

To be updated soon, Need more experimenting and testing.

yah, that is why i get it, people just judge too quickly when they see meditation. i get it first so i can spam abilities and later on towards end game i will have salvation and either beads or sprint.

im still, trying out new things. its just kinda tricky getting the health and power balance just right.
I have been trying out items that dont need stacks; convenient and still effective. Soon i will add my updates to this guide. so by then I hope you are more happy with that. :P

The problem lies in that Meditation is nothing more than mana. Mana pots are enough to keep his mana up, and a stacking item on support is just disruptive to your team.

Actives are too good to waste one on mana. Beads and Pendant are great on Janus and will get him out of any bad situation. I hardly find myself needing a defensive item. Also, since you're support, FoG should be something YOU have, you know, to get your ADC to lane faster and clear your jungle duties faster (his 2 does a great deal for this later, but early he appreciates the assistance). Later in the game you could go HoG3 if your in a serious game and objectives are key or FoG if in a random so you can stun, Portal, Threshold and Unstable to kill melee that were on you. It also helps in the offchance the enemy duo is pushed to tower and their blue is up. You can portal through the wall, HoG and Unstable, grab their blue and be back in lane with Threshold before they can even react (unless they have a Leap, in which case be careful).

Ethereal Staff sounds good though if you NEED a defensive item.

@UndeadTryHard, Correct. Easy, noob way to ensure this is to be with your minions in the melee and use it there, which is also the pro way to push lane if your enemy laner is missing.

Thats wrong. You can clear the whole wave with one Unstable Vortex. You just have to aim right.

you are correct. it just requires significantly more skill to aim then most people, most of the time though a guy or two in the wave might luckily avoid it.

Ethereal Staff perhaps?

well, currently I add warlocks sash for the health, if you have any recommendations, that would be great. I have tried other things here and there, but I will agree with you about the stacks part. Do you have any recommendations, that would be good. I have seen people putting Rod of Asclepius and Salvation. Chronos' Pendant and Shoes of Focus already give max cooldown, so it is wiser to add something else. as for Rod of Asclepius, I have no idea what that guy was on, lol.

Thanks for your opinion, any recommendations you give I will be sure to test out and add into the guide.

Ethereal Staff perhaps?

Replace meditation with salvation and you're fine.
