Don't forget about the non-warrior solo laners. A lot of lower-level solo mains don't know how to build against magical solo laners.
Of course, I have to recommend Zhong Kui. Expose Evil is good for poke, the stun on Book of Demons is decent peel (and the pet helps with clear), Exorcism heals you enough to have some sustain, and Recall Demons is just plain awesome (especially with how tanky it makes you with your passive full).
The main drawback is that your early game is really passive and turtle-y (expect to lose your T1 tower).

Just a few random thoughts regarding my recent experience playing - only a very little bit of - SMITE:
I definitely do not know the abilities of many Gods in this game. Makes dodging them all the more challenging :^)
My game/screen tends to freeze for 2-3s whenever a fight starts in game. Fun.
I don't know the current Conquest jungle paths, and though I've tried to keep an eye on them while playing other roles it seems so far like junglers in my games all just do their own thing. Not very helpful.
Loading screens are intimidating, so many people with high God levels and/or FP scores ._.
I'm trying to keep an eye on weekly quests, but after completing "Play 3 games as a Chinese god" ( Sun Wukong, Sun Wukong, Sun Wukong) and "Play 3 games as a Norse God" ( Sol, Ymir, Ymir) I'm now back to having to play Chinese gods. Unlucky.
Speaking of unlucky, it might just be me but leavers seem pretty common in low level games so far (I'm level 28 now). Out of my 7 most recently played games (see image below), 4 ended in an early surrender because there was 5v4 or even 5v3 going on.
Leavers in the low level games are pretty frequent
As far as the screen freezing goes its either ping, or your computer has too much going on and youre dropping frames. Checking how much you have running in addition to the game as well as dropping the visual settings could help
