BALANCE LIVE WITH THE 9.1 UPDATE - NOVEMBER 15

9.11 BALANCE

General
  • We are going to communicate our balance changes in a new way this update. We will see how players react to this and potentially make it a pattern going forward. So let us know what you think!

  • Instead of breaking changes up into simply items and gods, grouped by class or alphabetical order, we will instead focus on more specific balance goals and then include all the buffs and nerfs relevant to each goal."

9.5 and TTK (Time to Kill)
  • There are players who express concerns at every buff they see since 9.5, worried that the effects of that update would be reverted. They really liked 9.5 and they fear going back to the high-risk gameplay we had before that.

  • There are also plenty of players who weren’t as excited for 9.5, and have been asking for constant increases in early game aggression since then.

  • 9.5 was focused specifically on making the early game of SMITE less punishing. The update was very successful at this goal, because we made pretty intense adjustments to ensure that.

  • In reality the best place for SMITE is likely someplace in between 9.4 and 9.5. Gameplay data shows that we are pretty far from “reverting” 9.5. The buffs we have applied to a fraction of gods and items buffed recently has a small effect compared to a 40% increase in base stats across 100% of the god roster.

  • As we continue with buffs in this update we want to acknowledge that we need to be able to buff gods, classes, and roles who are underperforming. We have done quite a few nerfs to offset a lot of these buffs, and we will continue to buff utility instead of damage when possible.


9.11 BALANCE GOALS

Mage Early Game Buffs


"Mages have become a rare occurrence at SPL level play, and in this update we are making some big changes to help address this. As the primary focus for this update, a lot of other entire sections also affect it. Nerfing Mid Hunters will function as a Mage buff, but Mages will also be receiving a set of direct buffs specifically focusing on issues they face in the early game at higher skill tiers. Multiple underperforming Mages are seeing buffs with special priority paid to those who were nerfed in 9.4. And Finally, The Morrigan will be nerfed as she is already the top performing SPL Mid Mage and she will also benefit from these other changes. She needs to be nerfed to open up the lane for more mages."

Late Game Burst Damage Nerfs


"This update has multiple early game buffs for underperforming archetypes. We are applying an intentional shift here to help these archetypes perform better in the earlygame, which increases their likely viability, while also nerfing their late game, which limits their top end performance. This affects Mages, Mid-Hunters, and Assassins."

Mid Hunter Nerfs


"A key part of keeping mages out of Mid is the hunters that are currently dominating there. We are nerfing the top Mid Hunter as well as the items mostly used by Mid Hunters to help facilitate the Mage buffs in this lane. "

Warrior Solo Buffs


"Guardians have a firm grasp on the Solo Lane and we are looking to swing the favor back toward Warriors. There has also been feedback that Physical Protection options are lackluster and make it hard for Warriors to counter Assassins and Hunters, so we are buffing the amount of Physical Protections on multiple Warrior Items. "

"Guardians have also reported feeling the effects of the late game, so they should also get some relief from the %Pen item nerfs. Additionally we are buffing two of their most core items right now to make sure they can be the Tanks their teams need, fulfilling this role is more important than item diversity. And finally we are introducing a large set of buffs to underperforming Relics that could make a big difference on Support play styles."

Duo Hunter Buffs


"As we work hard to push hunters out of mid, we want to encourage their use in Duo and introduce a few buffs to help them out in their core role. Gilded Arrow will be the primary change that could impact the meta, by bringing back some of the strength of Critical Strike builds. "

Basic Attack Assassin Buffs


"Immediately after the 9.5 changes we started to see Basic Attack Assassins way overperforming Ability Based ones. That has balanced out a lot since then, and recent buffs have put Ability Assassins clearly on top, so we are introducing a small buff to help even this back out. "

"Also a few general underperforming gods were buffed, even if they don’t fit into any of these specific categories."

BANCROFT'S CLAW NERF
  • Decreased Shield size from 0.75% to 0.5% per stack



SANDS OF TIME BUFF
  • Increased True Damage on Minions from 10 to 15



VAMPIRIC SHROUD REWORK
  • Increased Magical Power from 20 to 30
  • Removed 5 Physical Protection
  • Removed 75 Health
  • Increased Magical Lifesteal from 5% to 7%
  • Added 7 MP5



SACRIFICIAL SHROUD
  • +115 Magical Power
  • +15% Magical Lifesteal
  • Increased Physical Protections from 20 to 40
  • Removed 100 health
  • Added 15 MP5



BLOOD-SOAKED SHROUD
  • Increased Magical Power from 75 to 95
  • Removed 55 Physical Protections
  • Increased Health from 200 to 300
  • +15% Magical Lifesteal
  • Added 15 MP5



SOUL GEM BUFF
  • Decreased Stacks required to trigger the passive from 4 to 3



CHRONOS' PENDANT BUFF
  • Decreased Cost from 2700 to 2600

  • Increased the Duration of the damage over time after leaving the area from 1s to 1.5s



EMBLEM OF TREMBLING TERROR BUFF
  • Decreased the threshold to trigger the tremble from 15% to 10% of the targets max HP
  • Increased the duration of the Tremble CC from 1.5s to 3s



HASTENED WINGS BUFF
  • Increased Movement Speed buff from 20% to 25%



ENTANGLING WINGS BUFF
  • Increased Movement Speed buff from 20% to 25%



SUNDERING SIPHON BUFF
  • Decreased the duration of the effect from 4s to 3s
  • Increased the % Current Health damage per tick from 5% to 8% (increased total damage from 20% to 24% and happens faster)



SPIRIT ROBE BUFF
  • Decreased Cost from 2500 to 2400



GAUNTLET OF THEBES BUFF
  • Increased the number of stacks on this item from 50 to 55 (Which increases the Physical and Magical protections by 5 each from 50 to 55 on the Evolved item)



SYLVANUS BUFF



NATURE'S BOUNTY
  • This ability now increases to 1s CDR at level 15 instead of level 17



VERDANT GROWTH
  • Decreased Cooldown from 16/15/14/13/12s to 15/14/13/12/11s



XING TIAN BUFF



HOOK SLAM
  • Decreased Cooldown from 16s to 14s

DUO HUNTER BUFFS



GILDED ARROW BUFF
  • Increased Attack Speed buff from successfully getting the killing blow on a marked target from 20% to 25%
  • Increased the Mana Restored on this trigger from 20 to 30

ACCELERATE
  • Increased the attack speed effect of this from 15/20/25/30/35% to 25/27.5/30/32.5/35%
  • Increased the effect of Section 3 from an increase of 25% Magical Power to an increase of 35%



STOP TIME
  • Increased Base Damage from 50/70/90/110/130 to 50/75/100/125/150
  • This ability his all targets twice, so from 100/140/180/220/260 to 100/150/200/250/300

Although it makes it more difficult for me to copy things over (haha), I like the new format of balance adjustments. It makes a lot of sense when needing to make more encompassing changes to group them by theme (e.g. early game mage buffs, both items and gods). Makes it easy for people to see the bigger picture of changes, and to see the vision behind the changes by the dev team.

As for the actual adjustments...
  • Don't think Chronos' Pendant needed a price reduction. If you want to rush high CDR you can pay the price for it.

  • That's a significant damage increase for Agni. Did he need it?

  • Did Thebes really need a buff?

  • Outside of Death's Embrace, my favorite ADC starter is Gilded Arrow -> Ornate Arrow. Ornate has felt way too late game for multiple patches now. I don't think the buff changes this, but I don't know that we want crits to be exactly balanced with (and definitely not ahead of) the Qin's meta.

  • It's been nice seeing less of Serrated Edge. Starting to buff it again, not sure about that.
