I was just on the official forums and came across the following:
http://forum.hirezstudios.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=249&t=113005

It basically compares items against each other!
Found it really useful and probably a good read to those interested.

I have summarised the key points below:

Comparisons:
Mechanics 1: Spear of Magus vs. Obsidian Shard
Get Spear, Obs shard better vs 160 magical protection only
Mechanics 2: Titan's Bane vs. The Executioner
Get Executioner, the attack speed gives it the edge over the penetration gained (although does say get both if you want to wreck face!)
Mechanics 3: Devourer's Gloves vs Soul Eater
Get Dev Gloves unless you're a bruiser (for health) or are going to pick it up as 4th item.
Mechanics 5: Warlock's Sash vs. Ethereal Staff
Get Warlock Sash, the Ethereal staff is for tanky bruisers unless pick up as 4th item.
Mechanics 6: Book of Thoth vs Bancroft's Talon
Book of thoth (more expensive though), unless you're getting it as 4th item.
Mechanics 7: Is the Heartseeker *actually* worth it?
Basically No.

Happy reading...

The thing you have to take in consideration when it comes to Spear of the Magus and The Executioner is that you have to apply the stacks with them for them to be effective.

So for a gods that do a lot of burst damage with 1-2 skills the Obsidian Shard would be better (like Poseidon although he has his Whirlpool to apply stacks, so Spear of the Magus is good as well).

And for ad caries that uses skills do do most of their damage Titan's Bane would be better because you would have to use three basic attacks before you would do the same amount of damage. On gods like Fenrir, Anhur (get both The Executioner works good with him) etc. I would go for Titan's Bane.

When it comes to #6 I don't get why they decided to compare those two items, because Bancroft's Talon is completely situational. The only gods I could think of having it on would be Hades (god combined with his ultimate, and maybe on He Bo to just do insane damage with you ultimate when you are being focused.

I remember when Heartseeker used to be a widely picked item as a starter item, and you either sold it or kept it depending on your performance. I wonder why no one uses it anymore, is it just due to the risk?

I know, you never see it anymore!

I think the game is more sustain based now and that might be why (with Deaths toll etc).

And the fact that you are such a huge target with Heartseeker.
