Reason for the build

While I am personally new to the site and adjusting to changes within Smite itself, I have 8 masteries with Rat so I thought this might be a nice guide for beginners to start their journey as the sly rodent messenger.

Item Building - My playstyle

Using Rat requires some thinking when building. There is of course the basics such as counterbuilding i.e against an Aphro, Hel, or Chang'e but playstyle is what heavily influences my builds. Being a more objective focused player I tend to hang back from team fights. The build I composed compliments that since it is made to pick off Carries and the other Junglers and sometimes Solo. The first item, being the acorn, is your most important to complete first. Having that item start against another jungler can prove to be more beneficial due to Acorn being a replacement for boots (because why would a squirrel even wear boots?).
Jotunn's will be the first power boost you'll need in the first half of the game and most of the enemy team will not have built anti pen builds at this time. Hydra's Lament prepares you for those encounters against the Solo and Support if they are playing their dedicated roles and not being off role heroes, i.e cabrakan solo or healer support.
Mantle of Discord can be swapped out for another damage item. However, in my experience, Rat has always been kind of a squishy assassin (as assassins should be) and the protections can really help later to deal with ganks or tower diving.
Deathbringer is another optional item as crit is not as reliable as it use to be. If you dont feel like you are going to get use out of it, my personal reccomendation would be to swap out for Titans Bane for more Pen and P. Power.
Finally Quin's Sais are handy since Attack speed is helpful for clearing the final wave lanes at end game. They are also handy in getting in his final combo hit which is a AoE around rat.

Skill building

Rat's skill set compliments itself very well. It has a lot of slowing potential and the stun from acorns can be the deciding factor in any fight he gets involved in.
Your most important abilities are your 1 and 3. Your one is both an initiator and a way of escape. Note your positioning on this ability as it stops when hitting enemy gods but does not stop through minions.
Acorn Blast is the second most important ability as this is Rat's only stun. Its a three way shot and to get the stun you MUST LAND ALL THREE ACORNS on a target. Precision is key with this skill.
Flurry is the slow part of Rat's kit. Its a weak move, however, the slow and protection reduction will be helpful when dealing with people who like to run from fights.
Last his Ult. Most of the time I use this ability to get out of team ganks on me or to traverse the map. NEVER CHASE KILLS with this ability. It is highly telegraphed and is not that powerful of an ult to boot. The knockback can help disrupt fights but its not too great of an ultimate.

When starting a fight you should always use your 1 first to dart to an opponent. Next use flurry to slow them from running away if they're low or to debuff them in general. Acorn blast is next up and make sure to be precise. Landing the stun can net you some kills you might not have gotten in the first place. Lastly and if need calls for it, use your ult to *ahem* RUN AWAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

Pros

Rat is a very agile character and his ability to be in and out of fights or to help rotate in jungle can be very beneficial

Acorn of Yggdrasil as a starting item, while cheap, still saves gold which can be spent on wards (Please by the love of Freya buy wards) or pots

Ultimate is very useful for escapes or traversing and disruption

A well rounded kit that has enough slow and CC to help anyone on his side

Ragnatoskr skin is literally the best skin in the game (For animal gods), don't @ me

Cons

    Rat is very fragile

He cannot withstand a gank as his kit was meant for poking one by one

Players always have to be thinking since his escape options might be canceled out by the position of an enemy god

His base retreat voice line can get annoying

Acorn takes up a slot for boots and don't provide amazing boosts compared to boots

If you want an Auto Attack build (not recommended for serious matches as mysterionz mentioned...only for fooling around) try this:

Acorn
Stone cutting sword
Shifter's shield/bloodforge
Bloodforge/shifter/magis cloak
The executioner
Qin's sais

Otherwise, i suggest checking out mysterionz guide for a more thorough breakdown on how to play ability based rat

For his first build, if he replaced deathbringer and qins sais with ability items, it would be a pretty decent build.

Ok let's start.

First, let's talk about Ratatoskr. Ratatoskr is an ability based assassin with high base damage with strong early and mid, but with a mediocre late game. Also Rat is the squishiest assassin (if not the squishiest god) in the game. Remember this description to understand the rest of the comment.

Second, your builds doesn't fit on a rat at all. Starting with the fact he is ability based, so you don't use your basic attacks often, you are not a Bakasura. So items that buffs specifically basic attacks should not be built on a rat. Another problem is the single crit item ( Deathbringer). Your crit % isn't enough to make it consistently so crits will be so randomly that is better put another non-crit item in that place. Getting worse, you build as last item Qin's Sais, that is only useful on basic attackers (I.e ADC (HUNTERS) and BA Assassins ( Kali or Bakasura). You are not a basic attacker neither has the Attack Speed to make Qin's worth.

The second build "Recommended For Heavy Jungling" has a lot of problems Bumba's Mask is a risk item that IMO doesn't worth on ratatoskr. It offers speed removing from you damage (that isn't good on a ratatoskr) and plus, makes you take more damage. Ratatoskr is already the squishiest assassin in the game and will you make him even more squishy? Why Devourer's Gauntlet? You won't use your basic attacks often to take advantage of its lifesteal and plus you have an attack chain of 1.0, 0.5, 0.5, 1.5 (in area), so 2 basics from your chain you do only half of the damage you should (meaning half of the lifesteal too) and the third is in area so the game cuts the lifesteal to 33% only. And again the same problem with Deathbringer and Qin's Sais.

And for last your skill order although I can understand your reasons, it isn't the best skill sequence you can do. Dart offers a really nice slow, I know, however the other skills offers much better things. Flurry should be you priority, it removes the few physical protections the enemies would have so you do more damage. Followed by Acorn Blast that does a lot of damage and only for last Dart 'cause with these two skills you will use Dart only to get closer of the enemy, not for damage.

Obs.: Poseidon is threat due his 3 ( Whirlpool) with his ulti. His 2 Trident isn't a big trouble if you are a burst rat with some defenses. Also remember that you can use Through the Cosmos to avoid Ares No Escape.

EDIT: Damn it, I wrote a chapter like bran usually does :p
