Freya Build

Example Vampiric Build (Replace Shoes Late)

Notes Starting Build: Vampiric Shroud, Emerald Ring, Health Potion. Complete Shoes of the Magi before finishing into Hastened Ring.

This example build provides early sustain from Vampiric Shroud and consistent attack speed from the Ring tree. It finishes up with high damage potential from Rod of Tahuti and the Blood-Soaked Shroud upgrade.

Replace Shoes late with Elixir of Speed and another item of your choice. Suggest one of Bancroft's Talon (added lifesteal), Toxic Blade (anti-heal), Magi's Cloak (counter CC).

Viable Starters (Choose One, Read Notes)

Notes Choose one starter and upgrade path:

Vampiric Shroud -> Sacrificial Shroud: Early lifesteal pairs well with Brisingamen's Blessing for early sustain,. The upgrade drastically increases her damage potential at the expense of a bit of her health.

Death's Toll -> Death's Embrace: Reliable early sustain translates into strong late-game sustain that isn't affected by anti-heal (health restore, not lifesteal).

Death's Toll -> Death's Temper: Reliable early sustain converts to attack speed and huge basic attack damage potential with easy stacks from minions or teamfight kills or assists.

Gilded Arrow -> Sell Late: Farm early and bide your time, with a suggestion to sell late instead of upgrade. Suggest pairing this with a Bancroft's Talon + Typhon's Fang build path to provide health sustain.

Eye Of The Jungle -> Protector Of The Jungle: Some early health sustain and reliable attack speed are really helpful for Freya. Also helpful for early jungle clear (Void camp, Alpha Harpy, Oracles and Gold Fury). Upgrade to Protector Of The Jungle for higher reliable AS, some nice physical protection, and bonus function in the Jungle.

Shoes Options (Choose One)

Notes Shoes of the Magi (Lifesteal): provides lifesteal that, combined with her passive, will provide enough sustain in the early game to allow you to build into your core attack speed items ASAP. This is the better option if you rush Hastened Ring.

Shoes of Focus (CDR): provides CDR, which can be incredibly helpful, even to a basic-attacker like Freya, as she still relies on her abilities for ranged DPS.

Traveler's Shoes (Utility / MP5): provides slightly higher MS than the other options, which helps survivability for a god that has no mobility. The MP5 is extremely useful as she can burn through mana quickly.

Main Attack Speed Items

Notes Hastened Ring (Boxing Mobility): the passive's temporary movement boost when basic attacking can allow you to juke and dance around enemies when boxing, or to keep up the pressure when chasing. The additional base MS is also helpful for survivability and chase. Optional at any point of a build.

Demonic Grip (Core Penetration): this is your core penetration (protection reduction) choice for high DPS and strong penetration against all enemies. Core mid-game item for EVERY match.

Telkhines Ring (Basic Attack Damage Boost): this provides bonus basic attack damage that is helpful for overall DPS. Best built later in a build.

Additional Item Options (Offensive)

Notes Ring of Hecate (Lifesteal + AS): functional option if you want the combined stats of lifesteal and attack speed. Typically considered early-game, depending on start.

Toxic Blade (Anti-Heal): possible late item to counter enemy healing.

Bancroft's Talon (High Lifesteal): This item is great when expecting to take damage even as you deal it. The increasing lifesteal and higher power when fighting will help you get the upper hand in a 1v1 fight.

Typhon's Fang (Lifesteal Boost): It provides enhanced lifesteal, working synergistically with Freya's passive and Ring of Hecate. Also provides some %pen which is helpful against tankier opponents.

Rod of Tahuti (High Damage): An item for the most confident, it provides high power, especially against low-health enemies. Pick it up late-game if you're confident in fighting the enemy and you're steamrolling them.

Relics to Consider

Notes This list of relics is short, but likely to be the only ones you'll ever really want/need.

When in doubt, the combination of Purification Beads (anti-CC) and Aegis Amulet (anti-burst) will help prolong your life or get you out of sticky situations.

Magic Shell is a great defensive utility pickup when you don't need both of the other two relics. Upgrade it to gain the "Block" effect to counter enemy basic attackers.

Heavenly Wings is a situational utility pickup, useful to counter lots of enemy slows. Upgrade it to gain the "Haste" effect when Hastened Ring's passive is on CD, and use it to chase or escape as needed.

Example Death's Temper Upgrade Build (Replace Shoes Late)

Notes Starting Build: Death's Toll, Emerald Ring, 3x potions. Complete Shoes of choice before finishing into Bancroft's Talon. Shown here is Shoes of Focus for more ability uptime.

This example build provides early sustain from Death's Toll and Ring of Hecate. It finishes up with high damage potential from Rod of Tahuti and the Death's Temper upgrade.

This build example uses Hecate + Typhon's for lifesteal, since the Temper upgrade drops the sustain.

Replace Shoes late with Elixir of Speed and another item of your choice. Suggest one of Hastened Ring (mobility), Telkhines Ring (basic attack DPS), or Toxic Blade (anti-heal).

Example Arrow Build (Replace Arrow and Shoes Late)

Notes Starting Build: Gilded Arrow, Tiny Trinket, 5x potions. Complete Shoes of choice before finishing into Bancroft's Talon. Shown here is Traveler's Shoes for added mobility (also helping get back to lane ASAP for efficient farming). Another option is Shoes of Focus if you would like a bit of CDR.

This example build focuses on early farming rather than pressure, and can be a useful build direction against a strong early lane opponent. The starter is SOLD late as you'll get enough AS from the 3 rings and other T3 items will have better effect.

This build example uses Bancroft's + Typhon's for lifesteal, since the Arrow tree doesn't provide sustain.

Replace Shoes late with Elixir of Speed and another item of your choice. Shown here and generally suggested is Rod of Tahuti for a huge power spike and some added penetration. Alternatively, if you want some damage absorption rather than being blown up in 1 second, you can go for Magi's Cloak or Mantle of Discord, but it will definitely hurt your DPS. (A dead god has 0 DPS though!)

Example Eye Build (Replace Shoes Late)

Notes Starting Build: Eye Of The Jungle, Emerald Ring, 4x potions. Complete Shoes of choice before finishing into Ring of Hecate. Shown here is Shoes of Focus for good base mana and some CDR.

This build provides good base attack speed early in the match, and will help you clear nearby jungle camps. You'll need some early mana sustain, so consider picking up a Mana Potion or two through the mid-game.

Upgrade Eye Of The Jungle to Protector Of The Jungle at level 20 to increase your base AS and provide really nice stats when in the jungle, which is helpful for fights and securing jungle objectives.

Revision History

Hello everyone! My name is Branmuffin17 (PC IGN: Muffinman17), and I'm a SMITEFire admin and casual SMITE player on PC. Welcome to my fourth venture outside of my original project, The Overarching Assault Guide.

I'll assume you know the basic gist of gameplay in the various modes, so I won't be teaching or talking much about rotating, minions, tickets, etc., except in the direct context of Freya's gameplay. If you want details on general info, I invite you to check out my other guides:

The
Overarching
Conquest Guide
The
Overarching
Arena Guide

For Conquest, you may find the ADC and Warding chapters to be useful.

This is a work in progress, as it should be. I'm always open to new ideas and different approaches.

Although she's a mage, Freya's gameplay style has the most similarity to a Hunter, and is typically played in the ADC (Carry) role. Where hunters typically don't have access to the Haste buff, she can pick this up in Hastened Ring, making herself a very mobile boxer.

NOTE: Her kit has been reverted to her state in early 2017. In many ways, this new old kit is very straightforward in general use.

..... Strengths .....

+ High single target damage
+ Built-in AOE for wave-clear
+ Strong boxing capabilities
+ Good sustain via lifesteal
+ Comes online fairly quickly
... Weaknesses ...

- Squishy
- Needs good aim
- Escape ability is also her ult
- Pulse can turn minions on you

Although all of the builds focus on her basic attack function, there are options in how you build her. I'll go over her abilities, provide some build directions, and give some general gameplay tips. Let's get our groove on.

Abilities & Combos

Passive:

Brisingamen's Blessing
Freya’s necklace grants her additional Magical Lifesteal. (10% + 0.25% per level, max 15%)

Discussion: This is an ability you don't have to think about. Having built-in lifesteal is great, but keep in mind the individual lifesteal effect per each target is somewhat lessened when you're using an AOE ability (e.g. Pulse is activated).

Built-in lifesteal means you can delay a lifesteal item if preferred, but you should always consider a lifesteal item at some point to enhance your survivability.
Skill #1:

Irradiate
Freya activates a Buff that makes her Basic Attacks do bonus Magical damage (40/55/70/85/100 per attack). Duration 5 seconds. CD 11 seconds. 25% scaling.

Leveling Priority: Max this 2nd.

General Use: Burst Damage

Discussion: This is an ability you'll use situationally, to provide extra damage to your basic attacks. Typically, it will be activated after Pulse, to provide bonus damage to your ranged attacks when fighting enemy gods or other individual targets (such as the Gold Fury or Fire Giant).

Tips: Consider using this without Pulse when fighting smaller jungle camps or to finish off a small remainder of minions from a wave. You'll use less mana than comboing with Pulse while still doing solid damage, and saving Pulse in case an enemy shows up.
Skill #2:

Pulse
Freya activates a Buff that makes her Basic Attacks ranged, dealing additional Magical damage (20/30/40/50/60 per attack) and Slowing the target (25%) and all nearby enemies. The area effect and Slow is lost when Irradiate is active. Duration 6 seconds. CD 11 seconds. 15% scaling.

Leveling Priority: Max this 1st for minion clear and overall damage output.

General Use: Wave Clear / Ranged Damage

Discussion: Activate for efficient minion clear and ADC ranged boxing function. Use alone to provide control on an enemy (via the Slow). Combine with Irradiate for max damage output on a single target.

Tips: It may be tempting to always use Pulse when clearing camps or minion waves. However, if there's no rush to push a wave or clear a camp, consider saving this, and use regular basic attacks or Irradiate instead. This keeps Pulse available in case you suddenly can use the ranged ability to fight enemy gods.

Warning: The AOE from Pulse can backfire. Early game, enemy minions can deal a TON of damage to you, and if an enemy steps in range of the AOE, taking one hit can be worthwhile if it turns minion focus onto you. Be cautious of this possibility.
Skill #3:

Banish
At her ground target location, Freya "banishes" her enemies into the air for 1.5 seconds. Enemies can't be hit or take action while in the air. CD 19/18/17/16/15 seconds.

(Banish, followed by Pulse and then Irradiate)

Leveling Priority: Max this last.

General Use: Initiation / Escape / Control

Discussion: This can be used as an initiation, continued attack, or escape tool. The small affected area means it's slightly difficult to land consistently, but when it does, it allows you and/or teammates to close the gap or run to safety. You can use more aggressively to initiate when your main "escape" tool, Valkyrie's Discretion, is up.

Tips: Banishes make the affected enemy untargetable. This means you should use the ability with discretion, as untimely use can cause teammate abilities or ults to completely miss.

Although the enemy is untargetable at the height of the banish, as they fall back to the ground, you can hit them, so you can get in an easy hit before they can even do anything about it.
Ultimate:

Valkyrie's Discretion
Freya flies above the battlefield, where she fires down AOE magical damage blasts up to 4 times. She can't be targeted or hit while at full ascension, and can cancel anytime. CD 90 seconds. 30% scaling.

Leveling Priority: Level this as it becomes available.

General Use: Escape / Teamfight AOE Damage / Finisher

Discussion: Many players will just consider this for its offensive capabilities, which are impressive...the large AOE blasts can hit multiple enemies for good damage, and have longer range than her ranged Aurora Blade, helping her finish enemies just out of normal reach. However, Freya doesn't have a low CD teleport or jump, so this is the only ability she has that can get her out of some dangerous situations.

Tips: It provides her with CC immunity and allows her to escape from player-made obstacles, making it a great, easy counter to abilities such as Ares' No Escape or Odin's Ring of Spears. When facing these types of enemies, it's suggested to save the ult until absolutely needed.

Ability Combos

With regard to ability combos, there really isn't much for Freya.

Banish in offensive situations is used for initiation or to prevent the enemy from escaping after an initial barrage, allowing you time to re-position and continue the engagement.

Valkyrie's Discretion is an ability that is more for finishing a kill or escaping CC / damage.

When clearing minion waves or jungle camps with more than 1 target, only use Pulse for the AOE. When attacking a single minion / jungle boss (e.g. Fire Giant), consider only using Irradiate if you think enemies might be near, as you should save the range Pulse provides for that.

Your core "combo" when fighting enemy gods is activating Pulse (to activate the ranged attack function) and then Irradiate (to gain bonus damage). You may consider activating Pulse and then getting at least 1 hit in before activating Irradiate, to apply the Slow effect.

Sands might also be worth a try on Freya. Sands + tier 1 ring start. Magi Boots > hecate > haste > demonic > telk > sell sands for tahuti / typh > boots for typh / tahuti.

I've been waiting to see you promote some CDR on Freya. I've always liked Shoes of Focus on her =)

I'll try that out.

I experimented with a bit of CDR in her build before, being able to stim til cooldown then whoop them and your stim is back up is kinda fun.

LOL Kriega

Uhhh...honestly no clue on Eye's viability. Do you feel it's viable enough (compared to the other starters) to include? If so, suggested start?

Eye Of The Jungle, Tiny Trinket (or Emerald Ring), 2 Healing Potions, 2 Multi Potions / Mana Potions.

Magi Shoes > Pyth (or Hecate if you don't care about late efficiency) > Hastened > Demonic > Telk > Protector > boots for Typhon's

Build I recommend this patch: Magi Shoes > Hecate > Hastened > Demonic > Telkhines > Typhon's > Sell boots for Magus. (or alternatively Magus 6th and sell boots for Typhon's).

Could also go Magi > Hecate > Hastened > Demonic > Typhon's > Telkhines > Sell boots for Magus.

I think people underestimate Focus on Freya. It's my preferred, especially when going Hecate as first ring.

I interchange Hastened/Demonic depending on need for the match. I can agree to Typhon's as 5th/6th. I don't know that Magus is that important for her...other items will give her increased damage, and she's single-target bursting enemies down, where the damage increase for all teammates isn't going to necessarily be as impactful. I'll need to play around with that and see how it feels.

Isn't bancrofts better than Hecate early if you're getting outcleared / need to box hunter?

I'd at least maybe list one bancrofts build: Bancrofts, three rings, Coin and Doom Orb/Tahuti.

I tried the new LS ring + Typhons and she was even more insane when boxing. However you are right, your clear is a bit worse.

So here's my take on getting outcleared early game. And you mention getting outcleared and needing to box the hunter...I think those are slightly opposite situations...if you're getting outcleared, you're going to want to play safer and near/under your tower, and making sure you're not losing farm to the tower. However, if you're boxing the hunter, it should be because you're outclearing or at least even enough that you're confident in your boxing at that stage of the game.

Ring of Hecate sort of blends all the best things Freya needs. The base power is only 20 less, and it provides the attack speed she desperately wants. As an early item, it will help set up stacks more quickly for Demonic Grip as well, which is important.

Some things should be taken into consideration. Pulse is going to be her main wave-clear, and it only has 15% scaling. Now, you could also underestimate that scaling (especially later game when you've built reasonable power), as it's a "per hit" value and you'll get a base 6 attacks at level 1, but the base 20 power increase is only 3 extra damage (base damage, not after mitigations). If you're hurt, you will output significantly higher damage, of course, equaling up to 18 extra damage per hit at 200 power (not to mention higher lifesteal)...but if you're that damaged, you're not going to want to be boxing, you'll want to be

The more significant damage output, at least when considering clearing the wave, is usually going to be more actual hits, not higher scaling, and the only way for her to do that is through attack speed. Hecate will allow about 2 more hits per use in the early game, and at that point your Pulse is probably going to be at least level 3, so you're looking at 80+ extra damage per use, if you're hitting the wave with each hit.

This isn't to say Bancroft's Talon isn't functional...and some may just prefer it over Hecate in the early game, and that's fine. They're about the same cost, but I'd argue that Bancroft's T1 ( Tiny Trinket) and T2 ( Talon Trinket) offer better stats than Emerald Ring / Enchanted Ring, and the Bancroft's path gives some lifesteal even at T1, which can be helpful if you're getting poked. And if you do have to box, you're definitely going to get better effect from Bancroft's.

But over the course of the game, when you also consider damage against structures, I will side with Hecate over Bancroft's in a general sense.

You're right, though, I will offer a Bancroft's build option, and will add that now.

By suggesting Dynasty Plate Helm you meant the new item or DPH? because it's now a t2 item with a t3. Or you haven't updated it yet and I'm a bit early? :v

It seems to be mentioned in notes but not listed.

Aw hell, so I ended up opening up two instances of the build editor...made all my changes to the builds there, then ended up on the other one, saving there, and closing the one I'd worked on.

So I forgot that I deleted my completely revamped builds, and only had partial completion there. Fixes incoming. LOL

has anybody thought about new spear of the magus on freya it seems insane because it stacks up the damage your 2 and your 1 do so on your 4th auto they both already do 18%more damage and every auto after your 6th both abilities do 36% more damage for the rest of the time that they are up.

Yes, explained my mindless error in the comment above, and overwrote most of my revised builds. It's meant to be listed.

hey i think if you list dynasty plate helm in penetration options you should also list toxic blade as a penetration option as it has 5 more pen than dynasty plate helm.

Gulfwulf (78) | November 15, 2019 10:46am
Toxic blade is already listed as an item.

No, what he means is that Dynasty has pen, and it's been placed in the pen item group.

Toxic ALSO has pen, but is NOT placed in the pen item group. This is a good observation.

But, what needs to happen then is that "penetration options" really should be better identified as "main penetration options." Dynasty AND Void should be taken out of that group, and put into the "additional item considerations" section. Even though they provide pen, that's not their big defining feature of why you choose those items.

*edit* adjustments made.

Hi bran. Great guide like all of yours, but i have to mention something;

Here, in synergies and match-ups part, you mention:
" Terra: Another god with healing capabilities, allowing Freya to get Soul Stone to help with early clear"

Since the item was removed, you should change that part.

Yeah I'm sure there are old bits here and there. Shows you delve deep into the guide =) I need to revisit that whole section.

Hey Bran! New Freya main here ^^ I alternate between Solo and ADC depending on enemy and what my friend plays for ADC since I play with a full queue. I mostly play solo though and was wondering if you could add a solo section in an update? :) or any advice. Currently my hardest match-up is a Cthulhu mid game (if they are experienced) that ultimate murders me endlessly if I don't have a strong lead. as in, pushes me past my tower and kills me from full health. Any Advice against this?

Is it worth buying Rod of Tahuti to finish build? It works for basics but prolly overkill.
I find myself going 3 rings + 2LS (Bancroft + usually Typhoon/Poly) most times. Still trying to figure if I need Typhoon and what final item will be.

Kriega1 (122) | July 3, 2019 1:45am
Poly isn’t worth it unless you’re ahead with Freya. Typhon’s is an overpriced item. And Tahuti is great on Freya. E.g. boots, Bancrofts, Demonic, telk, magus/obs shard, Tahuti, sell boots for hastened or shamans or deso. Alternatively you could get hastened at an earlier spot in the build, delaying Tahuti, and/or consider Dynasty Plate Helm as well.

Hi Gaseous,

It's always worth buying Tahuti if you can get away with it. Massive power boost and helps you more quickly finish off tanks that have built high prots. But as you've mostly found, you're typically solid on DPS with the 3 rings, Bancroft, and Typhon's, plus any of Magi's, Mantle, Ob, Magus, etc.

The times I'd consider Typhon's more are when facing a bit less burst (allowing you to survive and outlast enemies, and/or when enemies have gotten enough lifesteal to really hinder Bancroft's.

GaseousClay (1) | July 3, 2019 9:02am
Ah good point, typhoon when facing less burst. I was trying to run Poly, Typhoon, and BTalon to accentuate the passive.
I still need to try BTalon + BoThoth + BoDead + 3rings

Shouldn’t you be going 2 > 1 > 2 > 3 > 4 for the first 5 levels? Also maxing her 1 before the 2?

Add Spear of the Magus again as an option and Dynasty Plate Helm instead of Celestial Helm (which was nerfed, and it's also bad against tick damage, e.g. AMC and Susano, Crusher).

Also for the Mid lane build I would just start with tier 2 bancrofts as Freya clears wave very quickly plus her passive gives mana sustain.

And add Pythags as an option somewhere.

I'm glad you're cool with Pythag's now. It's a consistently underrated item that I've always felt was strong. Will add back in where applicable.

As for Magus, agreed.

And for Celestial...it doesn't need to be replaced. It still has function despite the nerf in specific situations, and would be situational just like Dynasty.

And Mid build, agreed also.
