Standard ADC Build (Vs. Physical ADC, Replace Dynasty & Shoes Late) Notes This standard build looks to rush Dynasty Plate Helm for early protections against sustain and strong 1 v 1 boxing potential. It focuses on standard ADC / basic attack function, with emphasis on attack speed and penetration. Dynasty should be replaced late-game.

You can opt to get Hastened Ring or Demonic Grip first, depending on preference.

Late-Game Shoes Replacement: Replace Shoes late-game with Elixir of Speed an item of your choice.

Build Item Dynasty Plate Helm Dynasty Plate Helm
Build Item Shoes of Focus Shoes of Focus
Build Item Hastened Ring Hastened Ring
Build Item Demonic Grip Demonic Grip
Build Item Telkhines Ring Telkhines Ring
Build Item Spear of the Magus Spear of the Magus

Starting Items (Start Shoes If Preferred) Notes Hunter's Blessing is the core starter for ADC function, due to enhanced basic attack damage, the MP5, and the attack speed once evolved.

You can start with either T1 Shoes or Imperial Helmet as preferred, but either way, you'll typically want to complete your Shoes first.

Get Dynasty Plate Helm early to counter a physical ADC's damage. As a bridge item, the low price allows you to build it quickly, and the flat pen is also functional for early damage.

Alternative Start: You can consider an early Bancroft's Talon (instead of Dynasty) for aggressive sustain purposes.

Build Item Hunter's Blessing Hunter's Blessing
Build Item Imperial Helmet Imperial Helmet
Build Item Healing Potion Healing Potion
Build Item Healing Potion Healing Potion
Build Item Healing Potion Healing Potion
Build Item Mana Potion Mana Potion
Build Item Mana Potion Mana Potion

Shoes Options Notes Choose one of the following:

Shoes of the Magi (Damage): solid choice for early aggression via the flat penetration this item provides.

Shoes of Focus (CDR): the CDR will allow your ult and burst from Northern Lights to be available a bit more often. Better in teamfight modes when you may need your abilities more often. Consider strongly when getting early pen items (e.g. Demonic Grip, Dynasty Plate Helm).

Build Item Shoes of the Magi Shoes of the Magi
Build Item Shoes of Focus Shoes of Focus

Penetration Options Notes Demonic Grip (Core DPS): Core penetration choice for high DPS and strong penetration against all enemies. Pick this up in EVERY match.

Dynasty Plate Helm (Physical ADC Counter): Bridge item (cheap price) with functional early-game stats to counter physical damage and provide some aggression via the flat penetration. Sell late when picking this up.

Spear of the Magus (Universal Pen): Northern Lights allows this to stack and give you the potential for true damage against squishy enemies. It's also enough pen to provide decent damage against tanks, especially when paired with Demonic Grip. Typically consider mid to late-game.

Obsidian Shard (Anti-Tank): This can be used with or without Demonic Grip for high penetration against the tankiest of enemy comps, and can work well in a more burst-focused build utilizing Book of Thoth.

Build Item Demonic Grip Demonic Grip
Build Item Dynasty Plate Helm Dynasty Plate Helm
Build Item Spear of the Magus Spear of the Magus
Build Item Obsidian Shard Obsidian Shard

Lifesteal Options Notes Bancroft's Talon (1 v 1 Sustain): standard 1st lifesteal choice for boxing exchanges. The increasing lifesteal and higher power when fighting (and getting damaged) will help you get the upper hand in a 1v1 fight.

Typhon's Fang (Lifesteal Boost): Optional, and should only be picked up as a 2nd lifesteal item. It provides enhanced lifesteal and works synergistically with Bancroft's.

Pythagorem's Piece (Teamfight Function): great when fighting in the midst of your team, as it provides high base lifesteal for you, while also giving teammates some added power and lifesteal. Can be considered in place of Bancroft's.

Build Item Bancroft's Talon Bancroft's Talon
Build Item Typhon's Fang Typhon's Fang
Build Item Pythagorem's Piece Pythagorem's Piece

Additional Item Considerations Notes Choose as suits your playstyle or needs.
  • Telkhines Ring (DPS Boost): provides enhanced basic attack damage, and is always useful in a DPS build that includes Demonic Grip.

  • Hastened Ring (Boxing Mobility): the passive's temporary movement boost when basic attacking can allow you to juke and dance around enemies when boxing, or to keep up the pressure when chasing.

  • Witchblade (Anti-Basic Attack): possible late replacement for Shoes, used to counter enemy basic attackers.

  • Toxic Blade (Anti-Heal): possible late item to counter enemy healing.

  • Mantle of Discord (Universal protection): survival option with high protections and a passive stun.

  • Magi's Cloak (Anti-CC): survival option, counter to strong enemy CC.

  • Celestial Legion Helm (Anti-Physical): This item is pretty cheap and provides high physical protection (at full stacks) to counter a physical lane opponent, while also giving you some power and good mana regen. Typically considered early in a build. Don't pick up if the enemy has ticking/DoT abilities (e.g. Ah Muzen Cab, enemies building The Crusher), as they'll quickly kill the passive protection stacks, making the item pretty useless.

Build Item Telkhines Ring Telkhines Ring
Build Item Hastened Ring Hastened Ring
Build Item Witchblade Witchblade
Build Item Toxic Blade Toxic Blade
Build Item Mantle of Discord Mantle of Discord
Build Item Magi's Cloak Magi's Cloak
Build Item Celestial Legion Helm Celestial Legion Helm

Relics to Consider Notes This list of relics is short, but likely to be the only ones you'll ever really want/need.

When in doubt, the combination of Purification Beads and Aegis Amulet will help prolong your life or get you out of sticky situations.

Heavenly Wings is a great utility pickup when you don't need both of the other two relics. Upgrade it to gain the "Hastened" effect when Hastened Ring's passive is on CD, and use it to chase or escape as needed.

Build Item Purification Beads Purification Beads
Build Item Aegis Amulet Aegis Amulet
Build Item Heavenly Wings Heavenly Wings

Early Sustain Build (Replace Shoes Late) Notes This build example gets an early Bancroft's Talon online for health sustain and boxing purposes. (You'll start with Hunter's Blessing and Tiny Trinket or Shoes, finish Shoes, and then complete Bancroft's Talon).

Replace Shoes late with an item of your choice.

Build Item Bancroft's Talon Bancroft's Talon
Build Item Shoes of the Magi Shoes of the Magi
Build Item Demonic Grip Demonic Grip
Build Item Hastened Ring Hastened Ring
Build Item Spear of the Magus Spear of the Magus
Build Item Telkhines Ring Telkhines Ring

Recent Updates:

2019/6/26: Guide is updated for Patch 6.7, "Ruler of the Heavens." Builds revised.

Revision History

Hello everyone! My name is Branmuffin17 (PC IGN: Muffinman17, PS4 IGN: Branmuffin17), and I'm a SMITEFire moderator and casual SMITE player on PC and PS4. Welcome to my fourth venture outside of my original project, The Overarching Assault Guide.

I'll assume you know the basic gist of gameplay in the various modes, so I won't be teaching or talking much about rotating, minions, tickets, etc., except in the direct context of Freya's gameplay. If you want details on general info, I invite you to check out my other guides:

The
Overarching
Conquest Guide
The
Overarching
Arena Guide

This is a work in progress, as it should be. I'm always open to new ideas and different approaches.

Although she's a mage, Freya's gameplay style has similarities to an ADC Hunter. Where hunters typically don't have access to the Haste buff, she can pick this up in Hastened Ring, making herself a very mobile boxer.

With her kit rework, she now has more burst damage function, so her playstyle and role has also seen a shift, and sees her in the Mid-Lane as well.

..... Strengths .....

+ High single target damage
+ Built-in AOE for wave-clear
+ High mobility/juke capabilities
+ Good sustain via lifesteal
+ Comes online fairly quickly
... Weaknesses ...

- Squishy
- Needs good aim
- Escape ability is also her ult
- Aurora Blade can turn minions on you

These builds have differing focus, looking to maximize her damage potential in various ways. She can be built with basic attack enhancement, burst damage intent, or a blend of the two, all of which is viable. Ready to see the light?

Abilities

Passive:

Mystic Warrior
Melee basic attacks restore 6% of her maximum mana per successful hit. Ranged basic attacks and abilities heal 1.5% of her maximum HP per successful hit up to once per shot.

Discussion: You'll need to juggle need (restore health or mana?) with exposure, since to gain back mana, you'll need to use the melee form of Aurora Blade. Always be aware and try to use this to your best advantage; it'll be a constant balancing act.
Skill #1:

Northern Lights
Freya empowers her weapon, making the next 5 basic attacks that hit an enemy deal bonus magical damage in an area around the enemy. Enemies hit by the explosion are slowed by 15% for 1.25 seconds. Minions take 25% damage from the explosion. Gods take 25% damage from any explosion damage after the first. CD 9 seconds. 50% scaling.

Leveling Priority: Max this 2nd.

General Use: Burst Damage / Slow

Discussion: This is an ability you'll use situationally, to provide extra damage and apply a slow. Simple in function, and can be applied in ranged or melee mode.

Even though it only does 1/2 damage against minions, if you've got enough mana, feel free to use it to speed your minion clear.

Tips: Once you've activated this ability, aim carefully and make those hits count. Missing the target still depletes one of the 5 charges.
Skill #2:

Aurora Blade
Freya can switch between empowering her melee attacks or shooting pass-through ranged basic attacks that stop on gods. Both her melee and ranged attacks gain bonus magical damage. While toggled on, each ranged attack drains mana. Minions take no bonus damage from the ranged version of Aurora Blade.

28/40/52/64/76 (+20% scaling) in melee bonus damage. 20/30/40/50/60 (+10% scaling) in ranged bonus damage. 14/18/22/26/30 mana cost per shot in ranged form.

Leveling Priority: Max this 1st for minion clear and overall damage output.

General Use: Wave Clear / Ranged Damage / Mana Regen

Discussion: Toggle on for efficient minion clear, ADC ranged boxing function, and health regen, but be very careful of mana use. Turn off and attack in melee range for significant mana regen.

Tips: Balancing ranged and melee attacks is important to conserve and regen mana. Only use the ranged version when fighting enemy gods or when you're looking to quickly clear minions. Otherwise, toggle off whenever possible to keep your mana high.
Skill #3:

Banish
At her ground target location, Freya "banishes" her enemies into the air for 1.5 seconds. Enemies can't be hit or take action while in the air. CD 19/18/17/16/15 seconds.

Leveling Priority: Max this last.

General Use: Initiation / Escape / Control

Discussion: This can be used as an initiation, continued attack, or escape tool. The small affected area means it's slightly difficult to land consistently, but when it does, it allows you and/or teammates to close the gap or run to safety. You can use more aggressively to initiate when your main "escape" tool, Valkyrie's Discretion, is up.

Tips: Banishes make the affected enemy untargetable. This means you should use the ability with discretion, as untimely use can cause teammate abilities or ults to completely miss.

Although the enemy is untargetable at the height of the banish, as they fall back to the ground, you can hit them, so you can get in an easy hit before they can even do anything about it.
Ultimate:

Valkyrie's Discretion
Freya flies above the battlefield, where she fires down AOE magical damage blasts up to 4 times. She can't be targeted or hit while at full ascension, and can cancel anytime. CD 90 seconds. 30% scaling.

Leveling Priority: Level this as it becomes available.

General Use: Escape / Teamfight AOE Damage / Finisher

Discussion: Many players will just consider this for its offensive capabilities, which are impressive...the large AOE blasts can hit multiple enemies for good damage, and have longer range than her ranged Aurora Blade, helping her finish enemies just out of normal reach. However, Freya doesn't have a low CD teleport or jump, so this is the only ability she has that can get her out of some dangerous situations.

Tips: It provides her with CC immunity and allows her to escape from player-made obstacles, making it a great, easy counter to abilities such as Ares' No Escape or Odin's Ring of Spears. When facing these types of enemies, it's suggested to save the ult until absolutely needed.

Ability Combos

With regard to ability combos, there really isn't much for Freya.

Banish in offensive situations is used for initiation or to prevent the enemy from escaping after an initial barrage, allowing you time to re-position and continue the engagement.

Valkyrie's Discretion is an ability that is more for finishing a kill or escaping CC / damage.

Your biggest concern when fighting is going to be toggling Aurora Blade on for ranged function when enemies aren't in melee range, and turning it off when you're in close, as you deal a bit higher damage in melee form.

You will also want to watch health and mana, which can also determine which type you decide (or are forced) to use.

Trigger Northern Lights for added burst function and a helpful slow. If you want to save Banish as an escape tool, you can use the slow this provides to close distance with the enemy.

Hi bran. Great guide like all of yours, but i have to mention something;

Here, in synergies and match-ups part, you mention:
" Terra: Another god with healing capabilities, allowing Freya to get Soul Stone to help with early clear"

Since the item was removed, you should change that part.

Yeah I'm sure there are old bits here and there. Shows you delve deep into the guide =) I need to revisit that whole section.

Is it worth buying Rod of Tahuti to finish build? It works for basics but prolly overkill.
I find myself going 3 rings + 2LS (Bancroft + usually Typhoon/Poly) most times. Still trying to figure if I need Typhoon and what final item will be.
1
[-]
Kriega1 (86) | July 3, 2019 1:45am
Poly isn’t worth it unless you’re ahead with Freya. Typhon’s is an overpriced item. And Tahuti is great on Freya. E.g. boots, Bancrofts, Demonic, telk, magus/obs shard, Tahuti, sell boots for hastened or shamans or deso. Alternatively you could get hastened at an earlier spot in the build, delaying Tahuti, and/or consider Dynasty Plate Helm as well.

Hi Gaseous,

It's always worth buying Tahuti if you can get away with it. Massive power boost and helps you more quickly finish off tanks that have built high prots. But as you've mostly found, you're typically solid on DPS with the 3 rings, Bancroft, and Typhon's, plus any of Magi's, Mantle, Ob, Magus, etc.

The times I'd consider Typhon's more are when facing a bit less burst (allowing you to survive and outlast enemies, and/or when enemies have gotten enough lifesteal to really hinder Bancroft's.

[-]
GaseousClay (1) | July 3, 2019 9:02am
Ah good point, typhoon when facing less burst. I was trying to run Poly, Typhoon, and BTalon to accentuate the passive.
I still need to try BTalon + BoThoth + BoDead + 3rings

Shouldn’t you be going 2 > 1 > 2 > 3 > 4 for the first 5 levels? Also maxing her 1 before the 2?
1
[-]
Kriega1 (86) | June 25, 2019 3:49am
Add Spear of the Magus again as an option and Dynasty Plate Helm instead of Celestial Helm (which was nerfed, and it's also bad against tick damage, e.g. AMC and Susano, Crusher).

Also for the Mid lane build I would just start with tier 2 bancrofts as Freya clears wave very quickly plus her passive gives mana sustain.

And add Pythags as an option somewhere.

[-]
Branmuffin17 (289) | June 25, 2019 11:57am
I'm glad you're cool with Pythag's now. It's a consistently underrated item that I've always felt was strong. Will add back in where applicable.

As for Magus, agreed.

And for Celestial...it doesn't need to be replaced. It still has function despite the nerf in specific situations, and would be situational just like Dynasty.

And Mid build, agreed also.

Kriega1 (86) | May 4, 2019 8:16pm
Why not just use the adc build for mid at this point? Book of dead passive?
1
[-]
Branmuffin17 (289) | May 4, 2019 8:48pm
I was contemplating stating you could use the standard build in any role. Could do it in Solo too.

I think a delayed Thoth (not Thoth rush, hence I got rid of that one) is still viable situationally and brings a bit of a different feel to the build, without killing the basic attack function.

Hello, first off I hope this comment will be read seeing as the last comment was the beginning of February. I am new to the game and was wondering where exactly in the item builder do I place the items you have listed? The rows only have 4 boxes so it is confusing me a bit. The ability builder is clear as rain however. Thanks

Kriega1 (86) | March 26, 2019 4:11am
Don't use the item builder, just learn how to build.

Anyway, if you're using the item builder it doesen't matter what order the items are UNLESS you are using auto-buy, and even then, the only order the matters is the order you select the items for the 6 slot build after putting them in the slots.

Essentially, what I use the item builder (on console) for is for quick access to certain item trees. e.g. If I have book of thoth listed I can get easy access to Soul Reaver because it's part of the same item tree.
1
[-]
Gulfwulf (65) | March 25, 2019 11:50pm
You don't need to use the item builder, but basically you add items to any of the rows and check the box underneath the ones you want in your build so they'll show up in the bottom left checkboxes. Auto-buy is okay while you're learning the game, but you shouldn't rely on it for very long because the suggested builds in the game are pretty terrible.

Hi Mega,

Yup, no problem. I see alllllll. LOL

In the Starter section, I would put Hunter's Blessing, Shoes of the Magi, Healing Potion, and Mana Potion. Note here that Magi is here just for ease of access...and that in some game modes where you want/prefer Shoes of Focus, just click Magi once, have it access the tree, then double-click Focus to do that purchase. But if playing Conquest, note the couple of different starts I'd suggest.

In the core section, I'd list Bancroft's Talon, Demonic Grip, Telkhines Ring, and a 4th item of your choice (maybe Hastened Ring, maybe Typhon's Fang, doesn't really matter).

In the damage section, put Book of Thoth (still an option but not suggested nearly as much as before), whichever of Hastened/Typhon's you didn't put in core, Obsidian Shard, and maybe Polynomicon.

In the defensive section, Celestial Legion Helm, Book of the Dead, Witchblade, and Magi's Cloak (remember single clicks take you to the tree that item is on, and you can get to Mantle of Discord from here as well).

In the relic section, Purification Beads, Aegis Amulet, Heavenly Wings, and whatever 4th one you want.

In the Consumables section, I'd just put Ward, Sentry Ward, Potion of Magical Might, and whatever other you want.

And just remember in your head your other options that you might use very situationally, like Witchblade or whatnot. It's not a perfect system, but that setup should make most things easily accessible for you.

Does that help?

Hi Bran,

Yes this helped a lot thank you for taking your time and posting this. Also please forgive my post I made in the forums asking the same question, I came back to this page through my history and I forgot it doesn't refresh and didn't see a reply. One last question, Is there an order in which I should buy these items? I am pretty sure I can't have all active at once. Are there some I should mark the little build box?

Ah, Freya. The goddess that when is on the enemy team simply obliterates my teammates, but when I’m the one playing her I simply get shut down by everyone on the enemy team.

I simply cannot manage her mana issues.

I saw a lot of people building Shaman's Ring on her lately, has something changed with the nerfs?

Vini_sds wrote:

That's why you need to manage her passive properly. And, Book of Thoth still remains an option. This simply boils down to: "Git Gud". Her 3 guarantees a hit with the 1, if not an a regular auto too. Maybe watch a high level player or pro play her mid or adc (might not be too common considering her ban rate). If you're struggling early game build Celestial Legion Helm if physical enemies/physical jungler is the main problem.

Vini_sds wrote:

Not really, Poly became a bit less popular, but it's still good on her. Shaman's Ring is ok on her but again better options exist. Telkhines is superior to Shaman's. I guess it's an option if you don't want Hastened on her in a ADC build.

Vini_sds (8) | January 13, 2019 3:13pm
Oh, absolutely. She plays VERY differently from hunters, and that’s my main issue learning her.

Besides the mana issues, my problem is that I feel Freya needs a lot of items to be “set up”, so I don’t feel comfortable boxing anyone until Poly is online, and that will take a long time. Taking Sol in comparison, she’s ready to box much quicker with Bancroft and Boots.

Maybe magical ADCs aren’t for me :p

You always present these comments with a feeling like you're incredulous of its absence, LOL. Funny thing is, Celestial Legion Helm looks like it's the flavor of the month. Before November or so, it was almost never seen being built on her. And it's still not a core item seen in every match against a physical ADC. Some people seem to be picking it up, while others aren't.

Funny about the trend also, since the item hasn't had any recent adjustments. All of a sudden, someone said "oh hey I'll try this" and it worked and others are now picking it up sometimes.

So I concede the point. It's being used by the pros, and yes, you keep up with all the pro builds on a daily basis. It's functional, and I can list it as an option. But I'm personally not stuck on just what the pros are building. I look at their builds and they're literally all over the place, not just with items, but build order, depending on the god. I think there are a LOT of builds that can be functional in any given situation, and I'm not planning on covering every single contingency. I'll do what I can to keep the general things covered, and do appreciate you pointing this out.

Kriega1 (86) | December 14, 2018 4:42am
It’s not just for dealing for physical adc’s but physical junglers too. Freya is so broken at the moment that she can still have a good damage output against the other ADC with just pen boots, hunters and Celestial Legion Helm. Maybe not on Freya, but the item was still being built for a while. It’s basically seeing usage on Freya in a similar usage to the late season 3 version of the item.

Hi Hades,

That seems to be the case a lot of the time, but it's seriously all over the place.

Seeing a lot of Book of Thoth + Polynomicon, along with perhaps 1 or 2 rings...sometimes a very early Demonic Grip (before boots), though in one case, PrettyPrime went with an early Telkhines Ring instead, which I find weird...though he went 8/0/7 LOL.

I honestly have only played her once since the 5.13 patch, and it was in Arena. In good conscience, I need to play her more before I update.

I have my own idea of how I'm going to prefer building her, and I'll lay that out here briefly, but again, I need to test.
  • With her current mana needs (even dropping a bit with 5.14), along with the decent scaling effect we're seeing with Northern Lights (nerfed a bit but that's ok), it makes a lot of sense to go with Book of Thoth. On an individual level, I don't want to have to worry all the time about mana management. If I can get around that, I'll probably drop Thoth, because she definitely can regen mana surprisingly quickly with her melee attack.

  • No matter what others say, I'll still prefer her boxing capabilities, and want to keep 2 rings in place...said rings being Hastened Ring and Demonic Grip. Hastened in particular is appreciated for that extra mobility, since she has none otherwise.

  • I just don't like Obsidian Shard that much. The % pen doesn't help against objectives, and against squishies, is going to provide the equivalent of < 10 flat pen, which sucks. I'd rather build the stacks with Demonic Grip and focus on her basic attack function, unless facing 3+ tanky enemies and want the pen up-front.

  • Polynomicon will likely be core. I don't like the 3 second CD, especially trying to get 2 procs out of it if I want to incorporate Banish, but the burst combined with the high power from Thoth makes too much sense. I still would prefer Bancroft's Talon, but for now, Poly will likely be the main lifesteal.

  • Build preference will likely be Hunter's Blessing, Shoes of Focus (or Magi), Book of Thoth, Demonic Grip, Polynomicon, Hastened Ring, situational (including possibilities of Typhon's Fang, Book of the Dead, Telkhines Ring, or protection).

Unless Hi Rez make more adjustments next patch then it could be time for a Freya Mid Build. - https://www.twitch.tv/zyrhoes/clip/ProductiveDarkPartridgeHotPokket (There was a high level difference though) - Full Build is: Book of Thoth, Shoes of Focus, Spear of Deso, Polynomicon, Obsidian Shard, and Book of the Dead, he's not 100% sure if he would build Demonic Grip on her, but if he does he would replace Spear of Desolation for it).

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/289034446 (At the end)

Also Spear of the Magus doesen't proc on her basics anymore.

Yes, she is officially a mess. This guide/build is on hold, awaiting further adjustment from HR before I make any major revisions.

Knew her basics didn't proc hastened, forgot Magus would be the same. She's a huge mess in a team fight without mana from Thoth since she can't just dive in melee range without getting blown up, so she has to use ranged a lot. She's great for 1v1 lane, minions, and objectives. But yeah, they screwed her ADC function up big time.
