Notes Pendulum of Ages as Poseidon is a god who wants to spam Whirlpool to control the lane, the 20% Cooldown Rate is crucial for ensuring this and appart from that he needs, Release The Kraken!, to be up for every objective fight.

Spear of Desolation as Poseidon has a very long cooldown on his powerful Ultimate, he needs help getting it back quickly. Since his large area attacks easily tag multiple enemies for assists or kills, this item's passive constantly lowers his cooldowns, allowing him to Release The Kraken! much more often in a single match.

Book of Thoth its a core item for Poseidon as he has a massive 100% damage scaling on his Kraken center, he benefits hugely from the raw power this item gives. The extra mana also lets him to spam constanly his Trident to maintain his speed, something really important as we dont have any scape on Poseidon

Blinking Abyss as Poseidon has no dash or jump, he is very easy to trap with walls or cages. This item gives him a Teleport to escape those deaths or to blink instantly into range for a surprise Release The Kraken!.

Obsidian Shard as Poseidon is designed to delete enemies with a single burst, he needs Penetration to ensure his damage sticks. This item ensures that even tanky warriors cannot shrug off your ultimate, allowing you to threaten the entire enemy team, not just the squishies.

Rod of Tahuti its the power spike for Poseidon since this item's passive boosts your total Intelligence by 25%, it acts as a massive multiplier, giving you the highest possible power to ensure your ultimate deletes enemies instantly in the late game.

Gem of Focus as Poseidon has no dash to escape danger, he relies entirely on running fast to survive. This item gives him up to 12% extra Movement Speed when using abilities, which stacks with his passive Changing Tides and Trident making him nearly impossible to catch while he zooms around the fight.

God Aspect De-Activated

Aspect of the Trident

Poseidon’s basic attacks always fire side waves. Trident no longer affects Tidal Surge but can be activated to focus the side waves, causing them to pierce enemies, and both abilities deal extra basic attack damage.

Poseidon's Skill Order Notes You should prioritize maxing your Whirlpool first because it is your main way to clear minions and the cooldown gets significantly shorter, allowing you to trap enemies more often. Next, upgrade Tidal Surge to increase your burst damage and safety, as it knocks enemies back while dealing a lot of damage. Always put a point into your ultimate, Release The Kraken!, whenever the game lets you because the damage jump is massive for securing kills, and save Trident for last since you only need one point early on to get the movement speed benefits.

Introduction

Hi, my name is Ragna and I started playing Smite 1 on PC in 2021. I started playing in little community tournaments and after a lot of training and work I manage to play professional tournaments on Atlanta as the Smite Content Cup in 2024 and SCC on 2023 summer.

Now, in Smite 2 I have reached Deity every single split and I have competed in tournaments like Smite Vegas Qualifiers (ending in 5th position of EU) and right now Smite Prime, so Im always getting updated about the best metas on the game.

Apart from that I have a Twitch channel Ragna_smite where we play Smite 2 every single day and we do coaching for the subs to help them to improve on Smite 2, answering questions, talking about the game, etc.

Hope you find this guide as a good starting point for the midlane.

Here are my socials:

Abilities

Poseidon's Abilities

Passive - Changing Tides

As you hit enemies with Basic Attacks and Abilities, your "Tide" meter increases. Higher Tide grants you increased Movement Speed and increased Ability Damage.

Think of this as your battery. You want to keep this meter full at all times. Always be auto-attacking minions or jungle camps while rotating. If your Tide is full, you are faster than almost anyone on the map and your abilities hit much harder.

Ability 1 - Tidal Surge

Summons a crashing wave that travels in a line, dealing Magical Damage and Knocking Back enemies.

This is a great tool for self-defense. If an Assassin jumps on you, fire this instantly to push them away. It creates distance, allowing you to run away with your high movement speed.

Ability 2 - Trident

Buffs your Basic Attacks to fire two additional shots. These shots deal Magical Damage and refill your Tide meter on successful hits.

This is your machine gun. Because it hits 3 times per click, it is the fastest way to quickly fill your Tide meter before a fight starts or apply on-hit effects from your items rapidly. Use this to shred towers or burn down objectives.

Ability 3 - Whirlpool

Creates a whirlpool at a target location that deals tick damage and pulls enemies toward the center. Crucially, it applies a Cripple (prevents movement abilities).

This is your most important ability. The "Cripple" prevents enemies from dashing or jumping away. If you catch an enemy in this, they are stuck walking slowly, making them an easy target for your Ultimate.

Ultimate - Release The Kraken!

Summons a massive creature from the depths. It deals damage in a large radius, but deals massive damage and Knocks Up enemies in the center point.

This ability turns fights around instantly. Always try to aim the center of the circle on your target for the Knock Up and maximum damage. It is easiest to land this immediately after placing your Whirlpool so they cannot escape the blast zone.

Example Combos

The "Kraken" Combo: Whirlpool (Trap them) -> Release The Kraken! (Center hit) -> Tidal Surge (Secure kill)

The Lane Clear: Whirlpool (Group minions) -> Tidal Surge (Finish them)

Aggressive Chasing: Trident (For speed) -> Whirlpool (To slow them) -> Basic Attacks

How to play Poseidon

Gameplay Start / Early Game

  • Push your first wave as fast as possible using your Whirlpool. Aim to place it so it hits the entire minion line and clips the enemy god, trapping them with the Cripple while you clear.

  • Head to your side camps with your jungler to secure farm; Poseidon rotates faster than most mages thanks to Trident, allowing you to reach your power spikes before the enemy.

  • Return to lane and prioritize using Tidal Surge to poke the enemy Mid laner. Since it knocks enemies back, you can use it to disrupt their clear or push them into your Whirlpool.

  • At this stage, you are vulnerable as you have no dash or jump; prioritize safe farming and keep your Tide meter full for maximum Movement Speed. If you get ganked, use Tidal Surge to push the enemy away.

  • Use your Release The Kraken! as soon as you hit level 5. Look for a Whirlpool trap on the enemy mid; if they are crippled, commit your ultimate immediately for a guaranteed kill.

Mid Game:

  • You enter the mid-game once you have completed core items like Spear of Desolation and Book of Thoth. Your high movement speed allows you to zoom around the map and impact side lanes constantly.

  • Maintain a high farm rate by using your Trident to move between camps quickly. The auto-attack stim helps you shred jungle bosses, while the speed keeps you safe from rotations.

  • Look for objective opportunities. Your Release The Kraken! has massive burst damage that can secure the Gold Fury instantly, preventing the enemy Jungler from stealing it.

  • Focus on "Counter-Engage." Do not start fights by running in. Wait for an enemy to commit to a fight, then drop Whirlpool under their feet to stop them from using movement abilities, making them a sitting duck for your team.

Late Game:

  • In the late game, Poseidon is a burst mage who controls the pace of the fight. Your goal is to catch a squishy target or disrupt the entire enemy team with your massive area damage.

  • Your primary goals in teamfights are:
    • Waiting for your setup (like an Athena Taunt or Fenrir Ult) to dump your damage.
    • Using Whirlpool to zone enemies away from your Hunter or to trap an assassin diving your backline.

  • Always position yourself behind your tanks; since Poseidon relies on speed rather than armor, you need to changing your position always around the edges of the fight using Trident.

  • During Fire Giant dances, use Release The Kraken! to secure the boss if your team has it low. The center damage is higher than most other abilities in the game, making you the best confirm tool on your team.

  • If the enemy is sieging, use Whirlpool to clear the wave instantly. The Cripple and Vortex effect makes it very risky for enemies to step up to your Phoenix.

  • Mastering the management of your Tide Passive (keeping it full for the damage and the speed buff) will distinguish you as a top-tier Poseidon player.

How to ward as a Midlaner

Early/Mid Game

Here you can see the best spots to ward as a Midlaner.

These wards will help you to be safe during the first instances of the game, giving you the information about if your getting ganked from the solo or duo side.

Very Passive Situation

These wards will help you recover if you come from a bad spot i which maybe you are getting ganked a lot or invaded

Late Game

These wards are use to help your team on teamfight situations or fire gigant pulls, there are a lot of possibilities take those ones who you consider that suits the best to your game situation.

Siege / Defense Phoenix

For this situation there are only two main spots to have a ward, as you can see them rotating from one lane to the others, maybe you could even put one at lane to see if minions are approaching the phoenix but it isn't that important as knowing which lane they are going to siege.

As with that information you could be able to be on the right position before your enemies giving you a great advantage for the teamfight.

Regardless of the role, wards are the most important consumable you can buy, so don't forget to buy two wards after each back!
