A Summary

Athena overall has a really good kit with some of the best abilities in a guardian that can benefit both herself and her teammates, especially in the early game. She works really well with most gods, especially the ones that can do a lot of damage. She struggles if its just her and a warrior teammate since they both typically have to be with reaching distance of the enemy in order to do anything. Although Athena is still a threat in the early game, Stone of Gaia is where it gets even more difficult to kill her due to it's passive, especially when you factor in the other protections from Sovereignty and Reinforced Shoes. War Banner during the end game is very useful for the team fight situations not only for the extra 300 health but also for the benefits that it provides your teammates. One of the downfalls of Athena is you want to be with another player, as it usually is as a support. This build is not made for Athena to wipe out enemies without a second thought. Overall, Athena is one of my favorite gods in the game to play with and her kit will not let you down.

If you are going to run war flag, either upgrade it to Spartan Flag or just sell it. War Banne just isn't good and is in need of a buff.

I'm not sure how the Spartan Flag interaction works with Athena's ult; whether it activates where she's starts or where she lands. If it's the former then it isn't worth it so just sell it for a different item.

It would proc whenever Athena landed / so in theory it sounds good, but its just a bad item compared to the other starters

Athena is a broken god so she can get away with building a lot of whatever she wants right now, but I disagree with a lot of this build you have.

For starters you have 2 Healing Potion and 2 Mana Potion you need Hand of the Gods on Athena to clear your buff and not miss any creeps in duo. You have War Flag this item is not good at all when compared to the other two items. War Banner compared to Compassion and Sentinel's Embrace just isnt worth it. You get so much more value out of either of the other two. Rushing into Sovereignty is not worth it, you will be much better off getting Shoes and finishing your Reinforced Shoes at lv 4. Getting Sovereignty second is fine! Or you can get Gauntlet of Thebes either is fine. I think Stone of Gaia is not great in support on anyone. There is nothing supportive about stacking HP, with a small healing passive. after that you have Ethereal Staff I am not against building damage, but when your only prots are from Sov, and Boots you need to relook at what you're doing. Ethereal isnt the play here. You then wrap it up with a Mantle of Discord this is totally fine, really good item. Selling your boots for spear of magus while having only 2 defense items is not great. I am all for you building this item though, you just have to go about it the right away.

Heres an example build of how to get Spear of the Magus in your build without losing out to on to much.

Sentinel's Embrace - Reinforced Shoes - Gauntlet of Thebes - Pridwen - Spear of the Magus - Spirit Robe // then you can either sell boots for Mantle of Discord, or keep boots and buy an Elixir of Defense

This build lets you have protections, good passives where you need them, and you have max CD you have 30% CD until you either sell boots, or purchase a Potion of Power

However even full defense with one damage item you still do a ton of damage, and help your team kill the players diving the back line.

Thanks for the comment and the advice. My only question is why do you go the shoes and then thebes route? Wouldn't it be more difficult to get the stacks after shoes then before?

Not at all. Thebes second gives you more than enough time. Just leech some farm from mid. Do your rotations and get assists, you'll be fine.

Besides, shoes are needed so you can rotate faster and gank your allies lanes

@Bran
This is interesting. I wanna include Bran here to hear his thoughts. When I play Athena, I usually clear the purple really fast, even Without hog.

So what you're talking about is general clear, of which Athena's is strong for a guardian at level 1 with her 3. That said, what Amoral is talking about is probably trying to max the support's XP gain by not only clearing the 2 smalls quickly for solo XP, but rushing to lane and probably blinking in just to be close to the first dying minions in the lane.

The rest of his comments I also agree with, though I'm sure War Flag can be fun. I'd just straight up go Sentinel's Embrace personally, but I know Benevolence is also popular right now.

Per Dubbs' comment, still finish shoes first. While stacking Thebes if you get it is nice earlier, the rotation speed is way more important at the time that you'd finish either Shoes or Thebes.

I'd go Thebes if I went Bene (or Flag), or probably Sov if I went Sentinel.
