Items: Why these items?

Shoes of the Magi: Damage, Pen, Movement speed - all the essentials to kickstart your DPS.

Breastplate of Valor: Breastplate is going to give you a whopping 20% cooldown reduction (this will put you halfway to the maximum of 40%). The MP5 will keep you in the lane and spamming that 1, and of course the mana & physical protection help your sustain!

Gauntlets of Thebes: This item is going to transform your Ares into a monster. This item gives you +30 magical power from the aura (thanks passive!), damage reduction for your team, health, and more MP5!

Shogun's Kusari: This is easily my favorite item to build on Ares. You get absolutely everything your team could need in a joust... Aura (+30 magical power) that gives your team +25% attack speed, magical protection, and cooldown reduction (this will put you at 30% CDR!).

Genji's Guard: The passive on this item is what makes it so wonderful. 2 seconds off of your cooldowns, is HUGE in a team fight! At this point, you're now at the maximum 40% cooldown reduction, so throwing this passive into the mix lets you bring a lot of damage and CC to the table in a team fight. Of course, the magical protection & MP5 are nice too!

Hide of the Nemean Lion: This item is going to cap everything off with some serious damage return. At this point, you now have your boots, (2) magical protection based items, and (2) physical protection based items. Obviously, if the enemy stacks magical damage, you can skip the item, but this (coupled with your shield of thorns relic) will absolutely shred any ADC who decides to mess with you. At this point of the game, your levels combined with your Gauntlets of Thebes will give you enough health to really utilize this item!

Blink Rune: This item is an absolute must have - and you really want to try and buy the upgrade ASAP (less time on cooldown, more time initiating team wipes with your ult)

Shield of Thorns: This item is very situational - if you use it at the wrong time, it's totally useless. Save this for when the ADC engages you. When that happens, pop shield of thornes, and start hitting them with your chains. The damage reflection from this (and Nemean Lion) plus your chains, will melt any ADC.

Strategy: Cooldown Reduction & Sustain

COOLDOWN REDUCTION IS YOUR FRIEND! The absolute bane of Ares existence is Purification Beads. That relic will save enemy opponents from being pulled in by your ultimate. How do we counteract that? There are (2) ways!
1) Team up with a god whose ultimate will trigger enemy beads as well (Medusa is perfect). This way, you're guaranteeing one ultimate hits when you fight together.
2) Get your cooldown reduction to the maximum 40%! I always build this CDR into my kit, because even if you're not having trouble with landing your ult - the 40% reduction will make you much much more active. The more ultimates you land, the more team wipes you pick up, the easier you win.

At 40% cool down reduction (with an upgraded blink relic), you will be able to nullify the enemies Purification Beads. With enough CDR, you're separating the cooldown of your blink & ultimate from the cooldown of their Beads. Keep your eyes peeled for enemies that pop their beads, so you can be sure to PUNISH them with your ultimate as soon as its back up.

Introduction!

Hey Guys - this is my Ares ULTIMATE Joust Build! Ares is easily one of the most powerful gods on a Joust map (given his high sustain, high damage, and high CC)! This build will help you dominate your opponents one chain at a time.

I disagree with "(dan the man)" boots and potions is a better start to rush pen boots damage. I think starter items are good for damage camp fight but mostly just situational for Ares (mark of the vanguard is great vs D.O.T + Basic Attack Gods. and as for watchers gift i only like to use it to sustain against teams with better Poke or Sustain swift wing is fun but not competitive enough for ranked play.
I Would Recommend ((Ragdas mask).. if your going to use a competitive starter because >>movement speed<< mitigates slows and adds more chase, evade and escape potential + Cooldowns and mid/late game pen.
Only 500 gold less of a set back and a bigger pay off.
I would also add bancrofts talon in your build. high defence + lifesteal

I think you've got some good points, though I think I'd consider starting both ways, depending on team comps.

Starting with your suggestion can absolutely get you into Shoes of the Magi quickly, if that's your main focus. He does very well with flat pen early, and if he's not the main tank, allows him to focus on damage. Your strat is definitely a solid one for early aggression, especially with Rangda's Mask, but it's risky. And that's the key...if you want to focus on that damage, this means you're going to be quite squishy, and with no escape, can find yourself getting focused unless you've got a true tank to peel for you. This can be even worse if the team has a ton of CC or some strong abilities like Whirlpool to lock you down.

One of Dann's suggestions was to start Watcher's Gift, and I'll explain where I think this is a very solid start. Ares has ****py waveclear. As mentioned earlier, he also has no escape (no pun intended). As such, if his teammates have good waveclear (which is a required strategy for a good joust composition) and he plans to be the main tank (which is a pretty good idea), Watcher's provides some amazing sustain in the first few minutes...it allows him to buy almost no potions if he's careful; the sustain is that good. Not having to specifically go into Shoes of the Magi as you suggest ("rush pen boots") allows him to choose it if he wants, or gives him the opportunity to get Focus, or Reinforced for that early tankiness to be more aggressive and tie down the enemies.

I personally don't like Bancroft's Talon for him. If I were to get any lifesteal, it would probably be Pythagorem's Piece, since it has more teamfight utility. The only truly offensive item I would get for him would be Spear of the Magus, and probably only if there was a Mage on my team to take advantage of the protection reduction (which is of course extremely easy to stack with his abilities).

I remember some of your conversations on Ares, so I know you prefer a more aggressive approach...a lot of this is just gameplay style, but matchups definitely need to be considered.

My only critique is that you could have changed your starting build for something else. Mark of the Vanguard or Swift Wing or Watcher's Gift plus Shoes, and how many potions or chalices you want would be better. Having your starting build be only consisting of Shoes and Potions will give you a weaker early game.
