Thanks for contributing a build. Would like to comment a bit:
- At this point, I don't know that
Archmage's Gem is a good upgrade for him. He's going to try to get as much consistent poke as possible, and doesn't have that big 1-shot thing going for him like Scylla's / Poseidon's ult, etc. If I were to get 
Conduit Gem, I'd probably upgrade to 
Gem of Focus, as with no escape, he'll appreciate the added MS and I think he'll get more out of the consistent damage aspect.
- I think I'd probably consider
Chronos' Pendant to go along with Gem, rather than 
Book of Thoth, though with the upcoming buff to BoT, maybe it's okay at that point. I'd also probably go 
Shoes of the Magi in that combination, though if you do go BoT I'd probably go for Focus over Magi.
- If you do get
Gem of Isolation, I think it's probably better later than earlier. It's expensive and doesn't have any flat pen (you have no pen in your build!!!).
- If you do get
Soul Reaver, it should also be a late game item if you do pick it up. But it has extremely low priority right now...it's not considered a core item since the nerf, and again, with no pen in your build, your priority at this point is % pen.
- Yes,
Book of the Dead is a functional item when combining with 
Book of Thoth, but it's been a year or two since it's been a good choice IMO. I would opt for a different item.
- Functional items you should be prioritizing earlier:
Rod of Tahuti, 
Charon's Coin, 
Spear of Desolation / 
Spear of the Magus / 
Divine Ruin.
In all, I think you could choose a better upgrade path for the starter, you might consider skipping Book of Thoth, and you need some form of penetration in your build.
