My Introduction

Greetings, one and all. Stuke here with a new guide. In this excellent guide, we look at a god whose legend is known far and wide across the world. He is a Knight, a Leader, and a Hero, but out of all his titles, he is widely known by one, King. Ladies and gentlemen, he needs no introduction, so here he is. Arthur Pendragon, King of Camelot.
Note: you don't have to follow this guide to the smallest detail. These are suggestions on how to play King Arthur. Please look at the comment section below and see other suggestions.

Who is King Arthur?

King Arthur is a Physical Melee Warrior who is best at comboing his abilities to apply pressure and control to a fight consistently. When I mean combo, I mean it; his playstyle focuses on his two sets of abilities he can chain together like an action game character. Arthur stays in the fight and builds up the energy to unleash on any opponent who dares to stand in his way.

Pros / Cons

Pros
  • High Damage
  • High Crowd Control
  • High Combo Potential
Cons
  • No Sustain
  • Steep Learning Curve
  • No Attack Speed Benefits

King Arthur excels in his constant damage and combines his abilities into devastating combos that cover his control and damage. Being the frontline force for his team, Arthur uses his massive pool of abilities and health to peel and disrupt enemies during a teamfight.
While Arthur has many tricks up his sleeve, they can all be easily countered by Hard CC, like stuns, silences, or any effect that can stop you in your tracks. While Arthur can fight, his lack of healing makes it hard to stay in the lane for too long so you will be making frequent trips back to the fountain for health cause of it.

Abilities

Steadfast
This passive is the bread to Arthur's butter. Landing damaging abilities on an enemy god will give you stacks of damage mitigation and gain something called "energy," which goes toward your ultimates. That's not all. After using an ability, Arthur swaps a stance (Standard and Combo), which is more like Cu Chulainn than a regular stance swapper like Tyr as Arthur's stances become active due to particular circumstances.

Overhead Slash
After a very quick wind-up, Arthur slams down Excalibur. He creates a line projectile that goes through all targets, but here's the kicker, if an enemy god is within melee range, they take additional damage. Best suited when your lane is clear, or you want to hit the enemy from afar.

Hamstring
Instead of a projectile, this ability is a 180-degree cone that will cripple all enemy gods caught in the range of this ability. Use this to make it harder for the enemy to get away or to set up for your other abilities.

Battle Stomp
Stomping your foot on the ground and creating a small AoE around you that deals damage, any enemy god caught within the range is slowed. Like Hamstring, this works best to set up combos with a soft CC, unlike its Combo counterpart.

Uppercut
Charging forward and stopping at the first enemy god hit, Arthur knocks them up into the air. Just when you think Arthur doesn't have enough CC in his kit.

Twin Cleave
Become a Beyblade and rip enemy protections with this ability. It can hit two times but cannot change its direction once set, and it is short so watch what you're doing when using it.

Bladestorm
Become a bigger Beyblade and hit every enemy five times, with the final hit dealing additional damage.

Sundering Strike
Lunging forward a wee bit and launching a small projectile, Arthur will stun all enemies within the projectile's path. Suitable for when you don't have enough for his other ultimate, but it's best to save for it as it's something else.

Excalibur's Wrath
Quickly dashing into the first enemy god he connects with, Arthur throws them into the air and does his best Ne Zha ultimate impression, striking the enemy multiple times and then sending them back down with a small damage radius upon impact. This part of the ability is the ultimate you want to save energy for, but the first one is also a good choice when caught in a bind.

Combos

While I would typically leave the combos in the Tips and Tricks section, I got to make an exception for Arthur as combos play such a big part in his kit. The first three examples were given by Hi-Rez, while the last is my creation. Here's a list of examples you can use:
Note: These combos are not set in stone and if you can come up with a better combination, then go for it.

Tips and Tricks

  • Like an Action Game
As said by the Devs, Arthur plays more like a fighting game character (Smash Bros, Soul Caliber, etc.) with how each attack can be combined with the other. Even his basic is a minor lunge attack; you need to think like a fighting game player. Combo the right abilities together for maximum damage in a fast and flowing way. While you can make up your combos, breaking it can leave you vulnerable and unable to attack or build up your passive.
  • Watch What You Build
Consider what items or relics you buy, as some of their effects won't work for him because of how Hi-Rez balanced Arthur.
DukeSloth made a video explaining which items and relics will and won't work on him:
  • Beware of CC
While other gods don't like CC because it can get them killed, in Arthur's case, it can ruin his combos as a few of his abilities have a wind-up time or hits multiple times, which will be put on cooldown when disrupted. Either use abilities that don't have a large wind-up or try to get the enemy to use their CC then hit them with everything you got.

Stages of the Game

Early Game
Arthur's over-reliance on his combos will not help him at the beginning of the game. Avoid fights and be careful of ganks until you get at least one point in all your abilities.
Middle Game
At this point, your kit is online, and you're ready to fight. Do what you've been doing while in the lane, and when the first tower falls, you're free to roam and help the rest of the team.
Late Game
You hit hard, take hard hits, and become a huge threat to the enemy team. Be the front line in all team fights and disrupt anything the enemy tries to do.

Summary

In conclusion, Arthur is a warrior king who brings a new style of boxing, special basic attack, ability spamming, and formless combo progression to the roster. Leading the charge in any engagement and making an impression on the enemy, King Arthur can strike fear if mastered. Always remember to chain your abilities to maximize damage output or control the fight, , and remind them why they call him King.

Ive just srarted playing smite because of arthur and merlin,,, Ive watched almost all guidesbuilds on him. What happened to glad shield? They said they heal arthur when he hit his abilitiy to people but Im now reading glad shields passive and it says it doesnt heal anymore. What can i do to replace it?

Kriega1 (143) | September 5, 2020 4:16am
Go Reinforced Greaves and Stone Of Gaia first 2 items instead.
1
Big Damage (37) | September 5, 2020 2:51am
They changed it in the 7.7 mid season update, basically Gladiator's Shield used to heal you for 2.5% of your missing health and mana each time you hit an ability. On some users it was fine because they only had 3 abilities and 1 ultimate to heal from. The problem with King Arthur is that because he has 6 abilities and 2 ultimates he could abuse this healing.

King Arthur is still okay though without the overpowered healing of glad shield and as you can see Stuke99 has built Stone of Gaia which has been buffed to offer as a kind of replacement for the old glad shield in terms of sustain.

As a carry transitioning to Solo, I think this was a great intro to Arthur. I have found success building speed items on him as well (Toxic Blade in particular)
1
Kriega1 (143) | May 28, 2020 1:21pm
Please don’t build toxic blade on Arthur
1
boogiebass (46) | May 28, 2020 1:23pm
Wait, are speed items even good on him, since his AA speed is fixed?

It's not core, item got nerfed at start of season I think. Could maybe still build it but it's not necessary.

Revenant7755 (1) | February 17, 2020 1:38pm
To me he sucks horribly, I keep getting bursted down by at least 3+ people, barely any escape and sustain, Am I doing something wrong? Cause I'm following literally everything you said.
1
Kriega1 (143) | February 17, 2020 1:42pm
You need to hit your abilities on multiple targets to get the most out of glad shield procs, as well as use his mobile abilities to juke enemy attacks and make yourself hard to hit.

Now with the Void Shield removing % pen I think it's more important than breastplate so I would recommend you drop breast to add void.
1
Stuke99 (56) | February 8, 2020 6:31am
As an additional item yes, you can have void shield, but as part of a regular build no. Breastplates protections, MpS, and CDR are too valuable to give up especially for Arthur.
1
Kriega1 (143) | February 10, 2020 7:44am
The mp5 isn't needed if you have blackthorn and mana buff, the protection is only +5 higher than Void Shield while Void Shield also gives 150 health, and you get cdr from blackthorn, glad shield, mana buff, 500 gold power pot, and alternative/situationals like genji's or mantle or spirit robe.

At the very least if you insist on picking up breastplate, mention to sell it lategame for mantle of discord.
1
xmysterionz (71) | February 10, 2020 6:58am
I disagree. Void provide much more damage which is more valuable early game since Arthur is more a Snowball god than a late game carry, so void, specially now feels like unbeatable if you are vs a physical solo. Mana has the totem and blue and you have 6 skill to cast you don't need that much CDR with all these skills, if you manage well you will always have at least 1 online.

Also, upgrade Arthur's 3 is way better in most matchups because it not only does more damage with a bruiser build, makes arthur harder to hit due the spin but also allow you to charge your passive way faster than upgrading the 1 (6 energy vs 12 using both stances). I DO RECOMMEND this priority: 4 > 3 > 1 > 2

this build is ****. rush glad sheild dont get 3 health potions. get 2 health potions and 1 mana potion dont get black thorn oni hunters garb or magi's cloak you play solo as arthur so oni's is useless
1
Devampi (105) | February 7, 2020 9:56pm
So why you should not get blackthorn? you only say oni is useless because you play solo.

Either you mean duel with solo as conquest does have 5 people and therefore the solo lane will not always be a one for one. the spot oni is at is decently late, meaning at this point you will be having teamfights.
Or are you one of the always splitpushing solo's? even then oni sees benefit as multiple people will come to stop you. So I think you have a bad reasoning for it being useless.
1
Kriega1 (143) | February 7, 2020 7:04am
Dude you can't go calling other build **** when you build ****ing jotunn's on Arthur in Solo and get boots third item.

You don't even build boots that late unless you're getting dumped on in lane and you're building to survive in lane by rushing your first main phyiscal prot item after glad shield before even getting boots, but that's a very specific scenario that I doubt you account for.

snippet5768 wrote:

Wow big difference, 1 mana potion added instead of using 3 health pots and therefore the build is "****"? Are you aware you use almost the exact same start in your listed Arthur build?

snippet5768 wrote:

Oni's isn't a support only item, you know that right? The passive gives percentage damage mitigation which CANNOT be countered by penetration or health percentage scaling items like Obsidian Shard or Blackthorn. And as Arthur is a frontliner he should have no problem getting the full benefit of Oni's passive when he dives the enemy backline.

Blackthorn is literally built almost every match by pros on King Arthur. https://smiteprobuilds.com/Builds?p_filters_page=1&p_filters_search=&p_filters_god=3565&p_filters_pro=~&p_filters_opponent=~&p_filters_role=~&p_filters_league=~&p_filters_sort=~

I don't think Magi's would ever be built often on Arthur but it can be an option into certain CC heavy comps, or ones with Da Ji + Ares etc...
1
Stuke99 (56) | February 7, 2020 7:01am
Sorry, mate, but you're wrong.

I have no idea what you mean by "rush glad shield" since gladiator's sheild is 1700 and starting gold is 1500. Or suggest switching one of my heal potions for mana, which is also wrong. Arthur can't survive the early game on two health potions and warrior blessing alone, since he has no sustain, you don't need that mana potion when you get Blue Buff (multi would be a better alternative).

Blackthorn Hammer is a core item for ability focused warriors. Health, CDR, and mana regen are necessary for Arthur.
Oni Hunter's Garb useless? Magical protection, MpS, and damage mitigation to help with getting in the middle of team fights (and combined with his passive which also provides damage mitigation) are useless to you?
Why wouldn't you get Magi's Cloak, Arthur can't deal with hard CC at all, He needs a way to cleanse those effects otherwise he can't do anything and becomes useless.

Honestly, what would you consider a "good" Arthur build?
1
boogiebass (46) | February 7, 2020 8:13am
The one where he builds jotunn's wrath on his Arthur.
1
xmysterionz (71) | September 24, 2019 5:34am
Spirit Robe would be a nice option to him so he can combo the mitigations from Oni + Spirit + His passive.

GaseousClay (1) | September 24, 2019 2:50am
Why am I the only one to do horribly with this OP guy, lol?
My K;D is terrible (18k 71d) XD
2
xmysterionz (71) | September 24, 2019 5:31am
King Arthur isn't OP. He is just very good. He is extremly good on lane phase espcially the early stages after you got Gladiator's Shield, but after it, on late game teamfights he isn't that good (as he used to be on a 1vs1 solo lane) because people already have pen, anti-healing...

He isn't good on Arena too because there is teamfights everywhere and at every moment so he doesn't have this 1 vs 1 moment that is really important to him, allowing a possible snowball or get ahead of the enemy.

GaseousClay (1) | September 24, 2019 11:23am
make that 18k 78d after last conq game. I wonder if its cause I am not aggressive and get poked.

As long as you have another heavy tank and build 200 physical power at least and you are ahead it definitely can be an option, but I wouldn't recommend it if you are behind or are the only tank in the team.
