Damage options

Notes Gem of iso is good if they enemy team is escaping a lot after your combo.
poly is more of a troll item. its not used in ranked and is more for casual play if youre destroying the enemy and want a bit of damage from your passive.
Etheral staff is an extremely useful item and i build it every time.
stone of fal is an alternative to void stone if you are feeling risky and the enemies have large damage abilites.

If youre confident in your team, max taunt first, this is a 2 second taunt and free abilites for your team mates, taubt can cancel a lot of ults and scary abilities too like a ***ba stun,
After taunt max shield wall. This is your main damage,
Finally dash, this is only really used as an engage or escape and not needed to waste early points

Obv max ult when up

Your bread and butter combo is - dash in. Shield wall, taunt
Note. Your passive makes your next auto ranged and slightly more damaging, this is not useful when engaging as they see you dash and immidiatley know a taunt is coming so they will try to escape, the extra autos will give them time to get out,
If your matched vs players with a lot of escape, after you dash go straight into taunt then wall, youll lose a bit more damage but they wont be able to get out

Ranked Play

Hello!

I am a Masters Athena, Ranked joust

the general consensus of playing Athena is to set your team up for kills as often as possible, this is done by dashing in, using your shield wall, taunt, and in that time if your team is competent whoever you taunted should either be dead, running or hurting bad.

You can't build Ancile on Athena.

I think Jade Emperor’s Crown should be added as an option. Also I don’t see the point of Gem of Iso on Athena.

Ahh those are also things I didn't indicate in my comment. I've never personally liked Jade Emperor's, but I get the purpose. Agree more on not needing Gem. I do like the late Ethereal, don't really like Mystical at all, and would probably say Emperor's would be another good potential addition, if the enemy team is camping their tower/phoenix.

Gem of iso is only really there to help with the slows depending on team comp, it is quite a dependent item on your / enemy team as if you lose your 2 second taunt and they dont die you have nothing left, its an extra backup

mystical mail is usually sold late game, it helps a tonne in ranked joust, especially masters teir, with athena maxing taunt first to ensure kill secures your shield does minimal damage, the mystical mail gives a few extra damage points in there with the bonus of health and armour, but dropps off late, will be explaining when guide is fully complete

Hi Novias,

Welcome to the site, and thanks for making a build/guide. Athena is one of my favorite guards.

Now, I'm not saying I'm the better player...if you're Masters, then you're very likely much better than me. That said, I do have some comments/opinions I'd like to share.
  • In your presentation of the build, I think it would be better suited if you separated things just a bit more. What I mean here would be, instead of offering a huge list of items as seen in your "standard build," you might separate into further categories. Starting items would be one listing, then you could have the "standard build" listing all of your normal/go-to full T3 items in order.

You already have a listing of items under "damage" and "items to consider" but you might expand on that a bit. Damage is pretty obvious, but instead of "items to consider," you might choose general protection items (the aura items, Prid, etc.), and maybe more specifically a listing of counter items (Winged, Nemean, Midgard, Witch, Contagion, Pest, etc.).

  • Speaking of which, Athena's taunt basically ensures that enemies will hit you with a basic or two. However, I don't see any counter items that work off of this, like Hide of the Nemean Lion or Midgardian Mail. Why? Do you not see any benefit from these? Would be curious as to your explanation on the lack of some fairly key items.

  • Not sure if you play as solo-queue or with a full party (going to guess a party), but your skill leveling listing isn't what I'd typically do. Specifically, after putting a level into the ult at 5, I probably wouldn't touch it until the end. You're going to use your other 3 abilities much more often, and they all have much better benefit in general than just the damage the ult brings. On top of that, the ult isn't an assured hit unless you're synched very well with your group and monitoring enemy usage of mobility and relic use and only hitting them when they're guaranteed vulnerable.
Anyway, to sum it up, I'm not fully in line with skill leveling, the build presentation could use some clarification/improvement, and I personally would list some additional items to consider. I think you're playing a more aggressive Athena than I typically would, where I would build more prots and counter items, and that's okay, but still feel you should consider some other items.
