Introduction

Foreword, this guide applies to every mode.
P.S. I hope you'll vote and comment on the guide!

"Without the sun, there would be no light, no warmth,
no life. Without Ra, there would be no sun, and
without , there would be less fun."

[VVGH] Hi!
I have played a humble amount of Ra and felt like I might as well make a guide sharing the things I've learned over my hours on the god.
I tried to keep the guide simple, conscise and informative even for experienced players. I did my best to avoid bloating the guide with situational items that you will realistically almost never buy or with walls of text of ability explanations that everyone who has played a couple of arena matches with the god already knows.
I hope this guide will help you learn a bit more of the Sun God and how fun he can be.

IGN: Yoohyeonie

What should you expect from Ra?

What am I getting myself in for for learning Ra?

Pros

Easy to learn
Great burst damage
Rewarding
Good, safe waveclear
Excels at finishing kills
Slippery due to the movement speed his passive Speed of Light gives
Solar Blessing can save allies in a fight with its healing, protections and power
Cons

No movement ability
Requires good positioning, otherwise easily jumped on and focused down
Hard to play effectively against experienced opponents; Celestial Beam and Searing Pain are hard to land by themselves
Nonexistent CC
Requires more effort to be as effective as other mages

Items

Explanations of the items in the build.

Starter items and their upgrades

Sands of Time
The "basic" starter. Gives you some cooldown reduction and good MP5 so you can stay in lane longer even with subpar mana management. The safer (and better) starter.

Pendulum of Ages
Strong upgrade to Sands of Time that goes well with Book of Thoth to give you even more power from your mana. It also gives you much needed cooldown reduction for fights later in the game.

Conduit Gem
The more aggressive starter with better clear early if you have stacks built up. Requires you to be more aware of your mana usage.

Gem of Focus
Not a weaker upgrade than Pendulum of Ages per se, but losing the cooldown reduction from Pendulum means that you will have to get it elsewhere. That becomes quite hard, since the only proper item for Ra in that situation would be Chronos' Pendant, which is worse than what you're giving up for it. It is a very fun and usable item though, don't get me wrong, it helps you be more aggressive and slippery so it fits the builds, I also like this more than Pendulum of Ages as an item.

Relics and their upgrades

Purification Beads
You basically always get this, not much else to it. Helps you in general and helps you get out if you get aggressive.

Temporal Beads
A great upgrade that helps you finish kills with the 3 second cooldown reduction.
Don't think of Chaotic Beads, they are useless.

Blink Rune
Ahh the love of my life. If you want to play as an aggressive Ra, you get this no questions asked since it allows you to perform the blink combo. Can also fix bad positioning by allowing you to blink away to safety.

Corrupted Blink Rune
Helps you kill the people you blink on, pretty self-explanatory. Scorching Blink Rune is pretty useless since you pretty much never blink from close enough for the fire trail to do damage, although if you can get it to work, go ahead.

Core

Book of Thoth
An item that gives power worth two items with flat penetration on top of it, it is an absolute must pick. That's all I need to say.

Charon's Coin
The high percent penetration and the survivability Charon's Coin gives with its total of 28 HP5 and 8% movement speed when fully stacked, coupled with Ra's already good movement speed and the healing from Solar Blessing midfight makes this a great item.

Swappable

Spear of Desolation
Very good with the aggressive playstyle, giving you cooldown reduction for a successful kill. This works well when you go for a blink combo and especially well when you have Perfected Rod of Tahuti as well.

Polynomicon
I will hail the playstyle this item enables further to everyone. It's so fun to blink in and burst someone to death from 100 to 0 and this item makes that 100 possible, without it it'd be like 80 to 0. Can be replaced with Soul Reaver if you're against many tanks.

Rod of Tahuti
Helps you finish kills with its passive, be it with your ult or the combo—and in the latter case—enabling the 100-0 burst further. Can be replaced with Obsidian Shard if you're against many tanks.

Perfected Rod of Tahuti
Since Ra has nothing to confirm the damage of Calamitous Rod of Tahuti, Perfected is the better glyph option of the two. It gives you more cooldown reduction and movement speed with its passive and it combines very well with the passive of Spear of Desolation.

Situational

Divine Ruin
You build Divine Ruin if you need antiheal, enough said. It also works if you can't really use Spear of Desolation's passive and are instead met with tanks that dive you, its passive works well there.

Obsidian Shard
A replacement for Rod of Tahuti if you are facing many tanks. Pretty simple.

Soul Gem
Soul Gem is fun to build and good for more healing/survivability and burst, but its healing will be partly negated if the enemy team builds antiheal, which they most likely will, unless they're dumb.

Soul Reaver
If you need more tank killing power, replace Polynomicon in the build with Soul Reaver. Polynomicon does seem to do more damage if you account the basic attacks in-between the abilities, but if you're in range to use basic attacks, you're also well in range to get dove by these said tanks. The more passive/lazy option as well, but not necessarily worse.

Playstyle

Answers for the questions "what" and "how" relating to how you play Ra.

What to do

Being aggressive
It's not even funny how much more fun Ra becomes after you become a real man/woman and ditch Aegis Amulet and replace that with the best relic you can get, Blink Rune. With it a whole new world will open up to you and you start to see kill opportunities everywhere, no matter the mode you're playing.

The main combo you should be going for: you first pop your Divine Light and just as it's about to explode, you use your Blink Rune to get in range for your flashbang to do damage, then use your Celestial Beam plus a basic attack to finish them off. With full build and Polynomicon, you will one-shot a squishy.

When enemies start to disengage...
...you start to look for opportunities for a free snipe from the backline when they are trying to fall back. One of the easiest examples of this is a Neith that has walked just a little bit too far and backflips away. You know where they are going to land, so you snipe and kill them as they land. If you don't have your ult, you can do the same with the blink combo you see above.

When you have to chill
Sometimes you have matches where you just cannot be as aggressive as you'd want to and that's when you turn that aggressiveness back a couple of dials and go "back" to more of a normal Ra.
When this happens you start to go for optimistic beam + ult combos: you try to predict where your enemy is going to walk and just go for it. Sometimes you hit both—usually when your enemies aren't paying attention to you—and sometimes you miss both, but no matter. You just have to go for them.
The other, more boring option is to just hang back and wait for your teammates to root/stun someone and just combo them then.
Here is an example of the beam + ult combo. This one was particularly easy
since Morrigan did not know I was there, but most of the time you want to try this it's in plain sight. It's literally hit or miss. "You miss the shots you don't take" and all that.

Tips and tricks

All kinds of niche and partly pedantic stuff I've learned.

Animations and basic attacks

Passive - Speed of Light
With animation canceling, the fastest way to use your abilities to get your passive up as you get out of base is to first use Celestial Beam, animation cancel it with Divine Light and for that, same thing with Solar Blessing. The animations of each of the abilities cancel each other when used in that order, except for his third ability whose animation cannot be canceled.
Even though this is the fastest way, in my opinion the best way is to first animation cancel Divine Light into Solar Blessing and then use your Celestial Beam normally. This is because your beam has the shortest cooldown out of your abilities, so if there were something to happen, you would have your other abilities ready earlier than if you were to use the first ordering.

1 - Celestial Beam
With auto-attack canceling, normally you would think that you have to basic attack before you use your Celestial Beam and then basic attack again to increase your dps, and you'd actually be right. However, in some cases though, e.g. trying to catch and finish off a low health opponent who's running away, your basic attack actually comes almost instantly after using the ability and accounting the travel time of the beam, both your beam and your basic attack hit the target at the same time. If you basic attack first in that situation, the basic attack itself will slow you and your beam might not reach the enemy if you're going for a max range beam or the enemy might get just enough time to dodge it.
AA → → AA

→ AA

2 - Divine Light
The above also applies here, although it doesn't matter in the slightest. Useless info, but this is because the ability has a property to it where its animation can be cancelled instantly so you never even see it; the animation for Divine Light is simply nonexistent if it is animation canceled. Try it, put your Divine Light and Solar Blessing on instacast (by pressing K in-game) and just press them quickly in that order. No animation for the flashbang. Basic attack will also accomplish this.

Other tips

‎‎

Passive - Speed of Light
You always want to have your passive up at all times, therefore you should know how to keep it up as long as possible for as little mana as possible. This also applies for the passive of Gem of Focus. You don't want to waste your Celestial Beam even if it's on the lowest cooldown, since it's your main damaging ability. Solar Blessing has a long cooldown and some important utility, so you don't want to waste it willy-nilly, so that means that you're going to use Divine Light to keep your passive up as it's Ra's most expendable ability.

You either want to pop your 2 once it passes the imaginary line between
the orbs or once the buff timer is at approximately 2,5 seconds.

2 - Divine Light
Sometimes when you pop your Divine Light and just walk at an enemy into the range of the ability with no intention to kill, they will waste their movement ability and be an easier target. You can often also just push people back by popping it and just walking forward, be it for peel or damage.

3 - Solar Blessing
One thing I really like to do is to combine the above with dropping down Solar Blessing as you walk forward as well if you're actually thinking of killing, it makes your Divine Light do more damage all the while it's damaging the enemy and healing you.
You can also often drop down your healing circle in front of your tank as if to usher and encourage them to go forward if you want them to attack. This can sometimes be useful when your tank just is not attacking when you think they should. A more normal application of the ability is to drop it down on a tank when they go in.

Afterword

I truly hope this guide has been useful to you, I tested all kinds of things that I took as facts to ensure I wasn't speaking nonsense and tried including everything I know of the best mage in the game. The burst playstyle might not be the best playstyle on every metric, but it sure is the most fun one. It also isn't just a playstyle, it's a lifestyle.
