Introduction

The intent of this guide is to share my experience with Zeus over the course of 100+ matches with him. I am by no means the best Zeus out there, but I've gotten a penta-kill more than once, and my 5 man team almost always want me to play as Zeus and build our strategies around him. The combos you can build with this god are amazing and reliably get multiple kills thanks to his Detonate Charge ability.

This is not a newbie guide, and this is not an expert guide. This guide is aimed at someone that likes Zeus, but wants to try and take him one step further. I will try to provide explanations for all of my reasoning, and in turn if you have suggestions/comments/constructive criticism, please post them in the comments as I am always interested in furthering my skills as well.

Please enjoy my first guide.

Team Work

Before we get into items and builds, I want to touch on the single most important aspect of playing this god well, and that is teamwork. Zeus can be a decent solo laner, and an exceptional ganker. There are guides out there that will help you get a very high K/D ratio, but my philosophy as a player is that wins count, and kills don't. I play to win a match, not to get impressive numbers (though as Zeus you tend to get both).

Choose who you fight along side, and knowing who to avoid can be key to victory. Below I will discuss some (hopefully) obvious god combos.

Know Thyself

It is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one; if you do not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle.
~Sun Tzu

Pros:
  • His Pillar of Agony combined with his Blight makes for a prime target for both your ultimate and your chain lightning. The duration meshes as well.
  • He is a tank, and can keep you alive. His Shroud Of Darkness is a silence and is especially helpful on both attack and defense in keeping you alive, and your pray from getting away.
Cons:
  • His Pillar of Agony can be easily escaped by either Prayer Beads or any god with a leap ( Odin, Sun Wukong, Bastet, Bakasura, Anhur, and another Hades). In my experience few players will buy prayer beads until you get them several times with this combo.
  • He is a magic based character, so you have two magic gods in the same lane. This makes you vulnerable to gods getting magical protection earlier in the game.

Pros:
  • His Ring of Spears plus your Lightning Storm will kill everyone inside of it that isn't a magic defense stacked tank. The diameter of your storm is the same as that of the ring. Detonate once 3 strikes have hit, and try to line up a Chain Lightning on any that look like they will weather the storm.
  • Gungnir's Might is an AoE slow with a decent bit of damage and an nice radius around Odin, it makes getting runners much easier (especially combined with his ability to leap and the speed you get from you Aegis Shield
  • You want your Odin to start out a bit tanky, but then build into a bruiser. If Odin is on the offensive, and the enemy is constantly wary of his Ring of Spears then they don't have time to be attacking you. An aggressive Odin means more kills for you both. If you can convince him to pick up a Frostbound Hammer, you're even better off.
Cons:
  • Odin can be a squishy god against magic type characters if he isn't built right. Against physical damage characters he'll start out strong.
  • Rang can be leapt out of similar to Hades Ultimate. The difference is that they cannot get out of it with Prayer Beads.
  • In the current build, you cannot fire chain lighting from the outside of the ring.
  • Against an aggressive team and/or an inexperienced and impatient Odin he can get you inside the ring, which may mean your doom if you were trying to flee.

Pros:
  • Ice Wall this is especially useful in jungle ambushes. If Ymir can close them in with the wall on one side and your storm on the other, this and a Chain Lightning will finish off everything but the toughest foes.
  • Frost Breath is great for keeping them in your Lightning Stormlonger. Also, Ymir can typically pair this up with his Glacial Strike
  • Glacial Strike is best when followed up by, or preceding a Frost Breath. These two tend to keep the enemies in your storm long enough for 3 or more strikes. Also, most people don't buy or use Prayer Beads to counter this combo. Some goes (like Zeus!) have movement powers which will get them out despite the slow.
Cons:
  • Ymir's Frost Breath can be harder to land on multiple foes than some of the others (which are larger, AoE effects). Also people seem to have more experience fighting him and are more wary of his CC, even though from my experience they don't buy prayer beads against him.
  • His Frost Breath lasts 1.5 seconds at the lowest level, and 2.5 at the highest. This is typically enough time to milk what you want out of your Lightning Storm, but you have to be right on top of Ymir or else you miss your chance.
  • He is a magic based character, so you have two magic gods in the same lane. This makes you vulnerable to gods getting magical protection earlier in the game.

Pros:
  • No Escape has the awesome ability of catching as many gods as you can and putting them right where you want. This works great for using both Lightning Storm but also Chain Lightning (especially when the latter is maxed). If you're good at knowing where he's going to end up, you can place your storm just as he pulls them. The stun will mean they're there in the middle of your storm enough for 3 hits (if multiple gods) plus if your detonate doesn't kill them, they're grouped nicely for a level 5 chain lightning to finish them off (without the creep there to absorb bounces, this attack REALLY hurts).
  • Bolster Defenses This can be a life-saver, and can even make you fairly tough when you have your Aegis Shield up. I put it here because it can drastically increase your survivability in group fights, which is when things can get a little chaotic for Zeus.
Cons:
  • Intelligent players get Prayer Beads right away. Any player can buy immunity to this CC, where as others require certain characters. Many times you can't tell if someone is going to be grabbed by his ultimate until you've already got yours up, which can mean a miss fire. You really only get a couple of kills with this combo before the entire enemy team wises up.
  • Stun does not last as long as the first two, especially if he only gets 1-2 gods.
  • He is a magic based character, so you have two magic gods in the same lane. This makes you vulnerable to gods getting magical protection earlier in the game.

Honorable Mentions:
Anubis for his Mummify and Grasping Hands (but he probably won't need you)
Ao Kuang Squall slows, as well as Tornadoes which is a slow and mean in its own right.
Artemis is a great finisher, has Calydonian Boar for stuns, and Suppress The Insolent for a slow/AoE damage.
Arachne for her Cocoon to pull them in/back in, and her Tangled Web/ Broodlings which can slow the enemy down. Her Drain Life silence can help too.

Know who you are going to be laning with, and try to make that as optimal a decision as possible. I have lots of experience with all of these combos, and they all work wonderfully (hopefully once Ares is a little less Flavor of the Month people won't so readily buy Prayer beads.

Items

I borrowed the starting purchase order from TailNguyen you should go read his guide as well. He and I have a similar philosophy (put charges on the enemy as fast as possible) with a bit more of a Zeus solo in the mid lane style.

Start out with 2 ranks of , and the reason for this is beautiful.

Spoiler: Click to view

tl;dr it gives you enough MP5 to be able to spam Chain Lightning and not run out of mana, allowing you to stay in the lane longer and not have to go back for mana. You don't need to buy Meditation nor Mana Potion.
