Skills

Don't knock it until you boot up Smite and try it. I've tried every other Ares build on Smitefire, and a dozen custom builds. This one is the best I've found.

When ulting, these should be your steps:
1. hit VVVR to chat "ultimate is ready"
2. use ability 2
3. press G to activate Girdle of Might or Girdle of Support
4. press F to blink into as many enemies as possible
5. ULTIMATE!
6. IMMEDIATELY USE 3-SEARING FLESH AND GET IN BETWEEN THE ENEMY AND THEIR BASE! They will be running away and you want to block and intercept them! You will mop up an extra kill or two by getting in between them and their base.
7. Use shackles to pick off any stragglers.

With Ares, your chains slow and damage enemies, so if you are getting chased down, don't hesitate to turn around and shackle your pursuer, them hit them with searing flesh!

The default Ares skill tree sucks. It prioritizes Bolster Defenses and searing flesh, but Shackles are best. My build ignores Bolster Defenses, as putting points into it really does not help much.

Introduction

Ares's passive is one of the strongest in the game. For every Aura item you complete, Ares gains +20 magic power! Thus, this build focuses on aura items until the last item: Ethereal Staff. I tried a number of other items in its place, but the staff give you the lategame health you need, a little extra magic damage, some mana.....oh, and what am I forgetting? IT TURNS 2% OF YOUR GODLY HEALTH INTO MAGIC POWER!

This Ares build is the result of dozens and dozens of games of tweaking, trial and error, raging, and eventually complete success! I have roughly an 80% winrate with this build, and my average K/D is around 15-5-25. Several times I have managed about 25-2!

I chose +HP Aura items over items like Witch Stone due to the bonus HP and the Passive 2% MP increase from Ethereal Staff.

Don't knock it 'till you try it.

Pros / Cons

Pros:
-High engage-to-killrate
-High HP
-Some magic and phys protection
-Lots of aura items
-Can 1v1 nearly any God

Cons:
-Long cooldown on ult.

Team Work

Without teamwork, Ares sucks. EVERY TIME before you ult, hit VVVR to chat "Ultimate is ready" AND make sure your 3-Searing Flesh is off cooldown.

As a tank you want to prioritize assists over kills and also on saving your team mates even if it means that you die. You also want to focus building protections rather than health and build to counter the enemy team. Getting kills as ares takes away kills from your carries and damage dealers which means less gold for them and then they fall behind.

1) If they're getting away after being ulted, that's not a build problem, that's your teams. They are stunned on pull in. If anyone on your team follows up, that's a kill. That just reinforces the ineptitude of low level play.

2) Aura items are not an end all be all for ares. Never think that ever. The heal is near negligible, it gives you bonus to healing which you don't have, and it gives zero protections as a tank. If you have a Hel or Ra or such and they won't pick it up, sure it'll help. But the biggest problem with a lot of Ares players, is they feel obligated to pick up aura items just for his passive. It's just not your priority.

3) Ares doesn't need magic damage. He has ridiculous base damage and his fire scales off their max health. You will literally kill anyone in the game ever, especially 1v1, without building a single damage item. His skillset is just built like that.

4) It's bad for a tank because you're shutting down your carries. You're getting gold that they need. They scale MUCH better with items than you do, because you're simply not gaining the same stat value as them. You get tankier, but if you're in the lead, you don't need to be. You need much more damage or it'll fall off. And you can't afford to be the one building the damage. It's not as....efficient. It works for now, because at that elo someone who does really well can carry well. Take that from me, I main Loki and I know how useful it is to fight an uncoordinated team. But that'll be the downfall as Ares later on. Once you are both ON a coordinated team (where every ult is utilized well, meaning CDR is amazing) and are facing coordinated teams (even in normals...you don't need to be in league to just stick together and be semi-smart), a damage Ares will start doing badly.

I'm actually really sorry if I'm coming of as rude or offensive, I'm just trying to provide advice for both you and the people reading the guide. I haven't stepped into league at all since the resets, all normals. And yet this is still what I observe. This build simply won't perform efficiently at level 30, no matter how 'casual' of a game it is, both literally and descriptively (did that make sense? Casual queue, but also the game is descriptively casual...)

"You'll no doubt notice the difference against competent players."

I can't wait for level 30... It's getting kind of sad in Arena. My girlfriend prefers playing Arena as Zeus, so when we play together it's just sad. She has a 90% Zeus winrate, I have an 80% Ares winrate, so our Ares+Zeus means we faceroll the entire enemy team.

UPDATE: I tried the CDR build several times, and while I agree it is probably best in League, it's not working in Normal. 80% of the people caught in my ult end up escaping (bad teammates perhaps). So, it doesn't matter that I can ult 40% more often, we're not getting kills. They run home and heal up.

Rod of Aescelpius is an Aura item, gives you health (this build prioritizes health over protections), +90 magic power, and gives you a slight buff with the passive of Ethereal staff.

I tried Pestilence, Rod of Tahuti, and Breastplate of Valor, but Rod of Aescelpius gives you the Aura, magic damage, and health Ares needs late game.

It may not be BEST in normal, but I have tried dozens of other builds. This one consistently gives me a massive winrate, and I almost never get below 20 kills in Arena. Usually with <5 deaths.

Also, how is it bad for a tank to have half the Team's kills in Arena?

Also, it's generally bad for a tank to have around half the team's kills. You're shutting down your mage/hunter carries. Later on, that'll come back to bite you.

I still don't think it's best in normal. I don't get the Rod of Asclepius choice. And how would people escape with low health? In a competent match, if you get gripped, you WILL die.

It's definitely not the best in normal, as we aren't even talking about league. Just wait until you're level 30, and play a few matches. You'll still do well, no doubt, but you'll notice the difference against competent players.

Update: Played this build on Conquest for the first time and got 15-4-20. Played arena again and got 24-2-28

Other builds may be better in League, but this one seems best in "Normal".

Other builds may allow you to ult 40% more often, but I find that most of the enemies escape with low health. With this build, you kill them all.

I tried it, and it seemed good, although I didn't get quite as many kills. I'll keep playing it out and see what happens.

The advantage of my build is that your other abilities are strong enough to go 1v1 vs 80% of the gods you encounter.

And after the ultimate, I have 3-4 people clumped in the center. Searing is DEFINITELY better in order to do AOE damage. By the time I get chains off on someone, the group will have dispersed. I usually don't even need chains because I kill 2-3 of them with the ult and searing flesh alone.

I did try Witch stone for a long while, but in the end, this build just works better in terms of K/D and team winrate.

Even if low levels don't use beads. Having full CDR will allow you to ult 40 percent more. Which means 40% more efficiency? So there really is no reason in not building it. Also, once you hit 30. Almost everyone will buy beads. Trust me. I've seen it with my own two eyes. o.O

I know a build used by xypherior the no.1 ranker in arena competitive silver. He takes Shoes of Focus to start with and Breastplate of Valor as the fourth item!. I figured out the reasoning behind this from playing experience. If Ares has very low cooldown on ulti early game, it usually doesn't go well with the team because other teammates doesn't have such a low cooldown. So either Ares would get killed or some of the teammates while attacking.

Literally no one will not use beads if they have them...you're simply low level. Like, I don't doubt you're really good, but the majority of people you're playing aren't. Beads are always bought against ares at level 30, and they are always used. Ares is in general very bad at max level...in arena he's slightly better, but...he's still ruined by one single active. ESPECIALLY without CDR. Beads will be up for EVERY ult.

I would suggest not making a guide until you're level 30, have a very strong grasp on the game, and see how the *average* player reacts to it, not just low level, non-experienced people.

I'm assuming you are new to the game, which is fine, but tricky as the people you encounter are also low level and don't know how to counter Ares. If people buy beads/aegis, you're done for. So what you actually want is as much CoolDown Reduction (CDR) as possible.

Also, after you ultimate, use chains before Searing. This is because of 2 reasons. The first one is that you will slow and CRIPPLE enemies. Many gods have some sort of leap/dash and your shackle will prevent them from using that. Second reason is that searing pain gets a buff against targets affected by chain.

As for a support item, my advice would be to get Weakening curse/Enfeebling curse, depending on the enemy team composition. If they have a healer or gods that can heal either through abilities (Tyr's 2, for example) or lifesteal, use Weakening curse. Enfeebling curse reduces enemies' attack speed, which, combo'd with your 2nd skill and Sovereignty, you will allow the rest of your team to dish out a lot of damage while receiving very little back. For that very same reason and mobility, Witch Stone is a great item on Ares, too.

Now about the guide itself, it lacks a lot of work, but the first thing you need to get straight is the content.
