In the old ranked system I played a lot of support, and then I lost like 500-1000 elo in one day (yes that was a sad sad day). And I just wasn't really good at other roles, but it killed me to see my adc miss like 5 autos on ppl with 2 hp left while I was doing everything I could (tanking tower, bodyblocking the enemy so he couldn't move etc).
So I started going Bacchus and Sobek and just roaming and invadeing making chaos, it was fun and work kind of, it was a lot better than getting killed by my ****py *** adc at least :P
Truth be told I only played ranked for like, 11ish times. Did end up with a 2700 ELO tho, but I played ADC every time. All my competitive knowledge, somewhat self proclaimed, comes from playing 5v5 clan wars.

I am/was in the same boat. Even had a big discussion with some clueless forum troll about it. The problem with playing support solely is that you can't carry a team. It doesn't matter how many body blocks, initiations, or perfect set ups you throw your team...if they suck they won't get kills and you'll lose.
Now...if I find myself first or second pick at top of elo I highly consider going mid or solo to at least be able to carry the team more.
Sadly, ELO doesn't seem to take tanks into consideration...which sucks.
About supports not being able to carry... just build power and get the kills yourself. Trust me its awesome you support well and you have fire to fight back with.
