Who is Sobek?

Ah yes Sobek, Mr. Stingray Whisperer-King of the Kaiju himself. Sobek is the Egyptian God of a lot of things, like a lot of gods, but mainly he's the god of the waters and the Nile River. He's kinda like an ancient Godzilla of sorts, a giant reptilian force of nature who doesn't bend to the will of others and is generally Neutral-Good in alignment.

In our battleground of the gods, Sobek joins as a melee Guardian who focuses mainly on CC and a little bit of sustain and damage thrown into the mix. I particularly enjoy him in the Solo lane, which is where this guide is mainly focused on.

Items

The Main Build: What and Why

Starter Item: Warrior's Blessing

Not much explaining I need to do here. Warrior's Blessing is just really good as an early game item. Gives you a little sustain, but most importantly, it gives you a nice boost to your protections after just a few minutes of boxing and trading with your lane opponent.

Item 1: Tyrannical Plate Helm

Tyrannical is a really underrated item in the Solo lane for magical characters. It gives basically 130 power for just battling and clearing in the laning phase, and also gives a good deal of tanky stats such as physical protections, health and CCR, which are all very valuable while in the Solo lane.
The real kicker with this item is the passive. When you're near your creeps, the creeps will gain increased, power, health and attack speed. This is again, a really underrated stat since you can easily get like 5 minute towers with one fat wave, and it will for sure help you outclear and outbox your lane opponent, considering the power and tankiness of enhanced creeps.

Item 2: Shoes of Focus

I prefer Shoes of Focus over Shoes of the Magi. Since it provides a lot more Mana than Shoes of the Magi, alongside the 10% CDR, you're given a lot of time to spam your abilities freely on the wave and the enemy. Combined with the mana sustain from your ult, and the health sustain from your 3, this just makes it even easier to stay in the fights longer and be annoying.

Item 3: Breastplate of Valor

I like this item on Sobek for the exact same reason I prefer Shoes of Focus. It gives a lot of mana and CDR, which allows you to stay alive in lane and spam abilities. It also gives a lot of physical protections, which will be useful in a lane dominated by the King Arthurs and Wukongs of the world.

Item 4: Void Stone

Void Stone is like Void Shield. Gives you both offense and defense and a kind of pen against protections. This item is good for your hybrid defense, as there's no way to tell when an enemy mid or even an Ao Kuang or Cabrakan Jungle is gonna come for you. Your opponents in lane might mostly be physical, but it's always good to prepare against both types of damage, and Void Stone is a generally good choice for that. You can also help your own carries when diving, since all nearby enemies will have passive reduced magical defense.

Item 5: Staff of Myrddin

Staff of Myrddin is kinda like a Spear of Deso in a way. Gives you 110 power, 10% penetration and 10% CDR. You probably already know how much this build likes CDR, so I won't say much else about that. The 10% pen is in my opinion good to have on any solo laner, as Warriors and Guardians often have really good base damage on their ults and other abilities, so the pen is quite helpful.
The double ability function is really good as in you'll have a lot of different options. The thing you'll want to do most of the time is to double pluck, be it to grab 2 people for your guys to **** up, or for a quick and easy escape

Item 6: Pridwen

Pridwen is just CDR and Protections. It replaces your starter item and is helpful when you're diving the backlines with your ultimate. The shield and its explosion are also useful while going sicko mode on the enemy mage.

Teamplay

As Sobek, when you play with your team, your main focus is to be a disruptive force on the battlegrounds. Get into the backlines of the enemy team, eat damage and just be annoying. Your ultimate is the epitome of this part of your job. You get extra protections from it, you slow everyone in a big radius around you, and you end it all off with a massive burst of damage that can punch huge holes in enemy defenses. Paired with Pridwen, you become essentially a tactical kaiju nuke coming in from below once you've gotten everything online. Then you just go sicko mode on everyone you see, antihealing them, knocking them up and tanking hits. Do not completely disregard your safety though, since the loss of a high CC tank is very influential during the late game. Know when to use your blinks and plucks to disengage.

The next most important part of Sobek teamplay is knowing when and when not to pluck people. Your plucks late game are extremely influential. Like you can for example pluck an enemy ADC into the open arms of your jungle and mid to easily take him out of the game at a deciding point. You can pluck an enemy jungler off a retreating squishy in a "Get down Mr. President" fashion. Your plucks can be either a deciding factor to win teamfights, or they'll **** your team over. Only pluck damage heavy enemies if you're sure your team can actually take them down. You do not want to be throwing danger right into your team's faces.

Your 3 has 50% antiheal secondary effect to whoever it hits. Even if healing isn't really a problem with the enemy's comp, it is still a very good idea to 3 the enemy ADC, as it'll prevent him from healing with his Devos Lifesteal. If healing is indeed a real problem, the 50% antiheal paired with Divine Ruin and Pestilence will easily top 100%, which is a very good thing to have against characters such as Hel, Anubis and Aphro.

Big damage (17) | December 1, 2020 1:46am
I would definitely re-evaluate Mystical Mail as a core Physical Defence for Sobek, really helps with his poor wave clear, not only in lane but proxy farming is a lot easier. You get a lot of confirmed damage with Sobeks play style as it is really hard for him to just be burst down and also prevents enemies blinking while trapped in your ult to escape.

My personal build order is Warrior's Blessing > Shoes of Focus > Mystical Mail > Void Stone > Pridwen > Ethereal Staff ( Divine Ruin for anti heal) > Mantle of Discord / Gauntlet of Thebes > Swap boots for Soul Reaver ( Ethereal Staff if you picked up Divine Ruin earlier).

Obviously I don't expect you to copy my build piece by piece but thought it might be helpful to take note of.
