Introduction

I've been playing Guan Yu for quite a while and decided to make a guide for his revamped version. This is my first guide ever, I want to share with you what I've learned and what has worked for me in games past. This guide is very much so open to any suggestions, I will take them very seriously.

Pros / Cons & Team Work

Pros
+ High Damage whilst tankable
+ High Sustain
+ Decent Speed and Mobility
+ Fills multiple roles
+ Supports minions well

Cons
- Very squishy early
- Also mana hungry early
- Can die easily if not supported well (IE your team sucks)
- ****ty jokes (Do not invite to house parties)

Good Coordinated Partners

When playing duo lane or when working with multiple other team mates in a lane they look to you for guidance. You are the tank, initiator, and healer. Learn the voice commands, and pray your team will follow them when you call out.

Some good partners for Guan Yu are;
- Athena: Ults (4th moves) stack well together (When giving room to gank with. EX. Not much room in a joust map because towers are so close) Also, Athena draws enemies towards her helping with their demise. Athena also will tank, making the couple not as easy to die. Also a perfect initiator.

- Neith: When sharing a lane with Neith, during fights, if the enemy starts to run, both ults of Neith and Guan Yu will help chase them down and kill. Also, Neith's rooting and Guan's slow down helps immobilize the enemy.

- Aphrodite: When kissed by Aphrodite, her passive can help a lot with Guan Yu's mana hunger, and also increases movement speed of the couple. Aphrodite has a great stun and her 2 slows down the enemy, as well as Guan Yu's 2.

- Freya: If you can keep her safe, she will do outstanding damage. Both of your ults allow you to be on top of the enemy while doing great damage and not letting the enemy get away. Also, Freya will do magical damage opposed to your physical so the enemy will have to choose which of you to be protected from.

Skills

Painless

Passive: Damage increases force of will, after 20 hits, the healing done by your first move is multiplied 2x.

Conviction

1: Heals himself and allies as well as increasing physical protections for 3s. Healing allies also reduces all cooldowns by 2s.

Healing: 50 / 80 / 110 / 140 / 170
Physical Protection: 10 / 15 / 20 / 25 / 30
Cost: 60 / 70 / 80 / 90 / 100 mana
Cooldown: 14s

Warrior's Will

2:Guan Yu charges forward, dealing damage and slowing all hit enemies. Hitting enemy gods reduces Guan Yu's cooldowns by 2s.

Damage: 80 / 135 / 190 / 245 / 300 (+50% of your physical power)
Cost: 60 / 70 / 80 / 90 / 100 mana
Cooldown: 14s

Taolu Assault

3: Guan Yu spins his sword quickly, doing damage to enemies he hits every .3 seconds, for 3 seconds total. Each hit debuffs the enemies' protections, buffs his own protections, and immunes Guan Yu to knock back.

Damage Per Hit: 15 / 25 / 35 / 45 / 55 (+20% of your physical power)
Protection Buff/Debuff: 10
Buff/Debuff Max Stacks: 3
Buff/Debuff Duration: 3
Cost: 60 / 65 / 70 75 / 80 mana

Cavalry Charge

4 (Ultimate): Guan Yu mounts up on his warhorse and attacks for 4 seconds. He clicks to attack, is immune to crowd control, and damage increases each hit. Enemies are slowed when hit and on dismount, stunned.

Damage: 75 / 100 / 125 / 150 / 175 (+30% of your physical power)
Damage Escalation: 20% per hit
Slow: 25% for 2s
Stun: 1.5s
Cost: 80 / 90 / 100 / 110 / 120 mana
Cooldown: 90s

Mean review? I find it, as with most, to be informative. You're definitely right on the builds and I think if he added both of our suggestions he would have an excellent guide going.

If he added cheesecake, it would be much better though.

Ah yes, cheesecake. I could go for some right now after typing that essay to the OP.

But I agree, I think the guide can be a very promising one covering new Guan. I was just making sure I didn't become harsh at the end - I type up comments in a review as I read the guide, only editing what I write if I notice a different part of the guide eliminates the need for what I had previously said, so I was making sure I wasn't extreme in any point of the review. I try to remain as unbiased/emotionally involved as possible when giving factual suggestions to a guide. Outside though, in regular forums, I'll be my eccentric, wild, cheesecake loving self. :D

I would definitely consider the effectiveness of Jotunn's Wrath. Guan yu is interesting in that two of his abilities reduce the cooldown of other abilities. As such, you want a decent amount of cooldown reduction, so you can activate these CD reducing skills, which reduce the cooldown of each other, and it's just a cascading reaction of cooldown resets. The mana is amazing as well, as Guan Yu is 100% an AD caster, and the penetration is useful as well, since you don't take Warrior Tabi over Ninja Tabi.

I'd advise against Executioner as well...as great as his progressive chain is, you will NEVER be autoattacking before using your abilities (Literally every initiate should be either through his ult, or his charge), and the penetration is therefore wasted on his opening combo. Titan's Bane is much more effective here - since his auto attacks are the END of his onslaught, the Titan's Bane helps his abilities penetrate more. The attack speed loss isn't as important.

I'd also be careful with Qin's. The idea of attack speed on him is iffy...sure, the progressive chain is great, but he should still be build as more of a bruiser than a survivable assassin. Perhaps make this the item you swap out for Jotunn's.

Note that I'm basing this review off your 3rd build. Tank Guan Yu doesn't exist anymore, and Tank DPS Guan Yu simply doesn't make sense, as it's based around auto attacking really fast, for nearly no damage, and his ult/dash/taolu assault do next to no damage.

All in all, good skeleton guide. Please add an item section, more to the skills than just their info (we can all read the god for ourselves, tell us WHY they are important, HOW to use them, and HOW they combo together).

Literally no guide is a guide if you don't reinforce your item choices though. It gives no merit to what you say. It means there's no difference from my saying Voidblade on Guan Yu (100% always take, no exceptions), compared to saying take Winged Wand on Guan Yu (Horrific idea, obviously). Give us a REASON to use your guide.

Still. I can't in good conscience give this a downvote, but it won't be an upvote until it's more than a skeleton. Please don't view this as a mean review, I just want your guide to do well! :)

I'll be honest, you could add a lot more information here. What you have is good, but is minimal.

With your skills section, give insight on the abilities. What are some good ways to use them and what are they good for is some good questions that readers love to have answered.

An items section lets your reader know why you picked the items in your build. Not letting people know that can leave them questioning the effectiveness of your build.

Do you intend on adding a gameplay section? Adding four match-ups does not count there. I would like to see your tips and tricks on gameplay, which is the main thing that readers want to see besides the build and you don't have it.

As for the builds, it ruins your credibility if you make a build and then say "not recommended". If you don't suggest that the player use it, then remove it. It's that simple. The other builds are questionable, so I would really like to see that items section.

Thank you very much for the reply. This guide isn't actually done at all. My friend and I worked on this for one night and I decided to publish it so people could see it, and possibly use it if they wanted. This guide is still very much so open to change and we both appreciate your comment. We will be adding changes so keep your eye on the this guide c:
