Introduction to Tiamat

That's a Lot of Damage (Mitigated)!

PS.: Above image is after match results for an Arena using this build.

Tiamat had her passive reworked recently to scale off of your magical power, up to 600 magical power, and provides up to 60% mitigation with max Hardened Scales while in ground stance. So, why not supplement such a powerful passive with a powerful build focused on damage mitigation and just not dying? You can achieve 74% Damage Mitigation with this build, which to me is absolutely insane. Hardened Scales mitigation applies multiplicatively (thanks Flareb00t for pointing that out).

Don't know how to play Tiamat? Here's a basic combo:
  • Start in Flying Stance.
  • Summon the Minotaur to Slow a single target (preferably a squishy target).
  • While they are slowed, cast Ruination on them to get an easier-to-hit stun.
  • Since they are stunned, you will have time to charge and cast Primordial Onslaught. You do not have to charge until the animation ends for the maximum shots, just until the bar fills up on the ground targeter fills. Left-click (or console equivalent) again to cast it early.
  • Leap in on the target.
  • Knock them up with Outburst.
  • Use Consume on them to slow them.
  • While in ground stance, try to hit as many gods as you can with your Ultimate at any time, but if you're chasing someone, prioritize them. It has a seriously low cooldown.

With this build, you will out-heal the enemy early game and out mitigate the enemy late game. Hope you all have fun with this build, I know I did!

Early Game

High Magical Power Early = Mitigations

In modes like Clash and Arena, I would suggest getting Blue Buff, and then Consuming Red buff whenever you can.

Your number 1 priority with Tiamat in this build is to get the mitigations from your passive early. That will keep you tanky throughout the rest of the game, and it will allow you to box early. Bancroft's has a max power of 200 when at 25% health, which is already 1/3 of her power needed to get the maximum Damage Mitigation possible. The healing which it brings also is incredibly beneficial, and you get an even further power spike after buying Typhon's Fang. With the first 3 items of the build and your starter, you will have anywhere between 346 and 486 power, along with 38% - 58% Life-steal (with 1.3x effective healing from life-steal as well thanks to Typhon's). What this means, is you can get around 50% mitigations from your passive with only 3 items while in ground stance, and also a TON of healing on top of that.

You'll want to summon your little serpents and Consume them before team fights to get some hardened scales as diving in and using Tempest of Undoing isn't entirely reliable.

Buy beads first if they have heavy CC that you don't feel confident cleansing with Tiamat's CC immune ultimate, and blink if you feel comfortable.

Mid-to-Late Game

God Mode Enabled

Even though Lono's Mask reduces your damage, it doesn't affect you too much when you can just stand in front of them and take very little damage. Being able to be present in the fight without dying is beneficial enough for your damage that you can cause lots of problems for the enemy team. Stone of Fal provides stacks of damage mitigation upon hitting basic attacks, and Tiamat's Flying stance has ranged basics. You can hit two basic attacks and then have a constant 6% mitigation. Then, when you want to fight, leap in, use Tempest of Undoing, basic attack a god, and get 12% mitigation and additional CCR for 10 seconds. Then, when you have to disengage because that buff wears off, just cast Rising Flight to retreat back to your team, and begin stacking Stone of Fal with your ranged basics again.

You won't need CDR to keep Gem of Focus stacked because of how many abilities you have to cast as Tiamat. Also, you can buy the 500 gold Power Potion to get additional Power and CDR.

Welcome at smitefire! It interesting. I preffer to experiment with full % mitigation tank tiamat because you can focus at tanking. But this build seems more dangerous because it has a lot of vampirism you rely on, and any antiheal items, paying attention to Tiamat' close range fights where she can be affected by a lot of enemy antiheal, and coupled with Lono's Mask healing reduction, might ruin entire build.

But if you would not build magical vampirism this build may seems not such tanky. Trying to build her more power instead of vampirism may give her more % mitigation trough passive, but hardened scales still fading fast without defensive items because scales is the only that reduces incoming damage in this build, which means that all damage she got before passive will not be reduced by protection and her armor health will get ~50% from 90% of enemy damage. Which still a lot, which will causes her hardened scale fading very fast. Which means you would like to escape close fight much sooner (this is where your no-cdr will be a problem with very high stance switch cooldown) and which more important is that this result is how her gameplay mentioned to be — even with that build her defence is just something that not allow her die too fast because of her need for close range fights to utilize all potential. So i dont see any specific reasons to sacrifice a lot of damage into defense that will not be so useful in most scenario especially when enemy get antiheal.

Devs fixed her passive realy well and closed some ways to abuse her passive, which means that you only build power + little defence, or full power or full defence. But not both, and i dont think this build may show good results at long distance. But surely this build may be interesting for fun or to learn something as player who gonna decide making her even more tanky, or more powerfull

I agree with your concerns about reliance on Vampirism! I think you can flex this to be a little more reliable with your damage and maybe giving you more items to play around. For instance, Book of Thoth/Book of the Dead could work well with Pendulum of Ages, but then you lack Penetration. You could make up for that with a Charon's Coin pickup late game, or even Obsidian Shard however.

There's certainly many options! Thanks for the reply! This is my first build so if I do another one, I will try to make it formatted nicer. Appreciate the discussion!

This is the reason - if you dont build vampirism you would get even less defence since her scales fading very fast without defence. And with no cdr after 5 secs of massive team fight you already losing all your protection but can not get back. When her damage in ground stance are very low she could not deal with enemy faster that they with her, she still needs a frontliner. You also will be forced to lvl her 3 first every lvl and will get lack of damage. If you do bot lvl 3 your stance switch is 20s cooldown
