God Introduction

Cu Chulainn is a very interesting god as he does not have mana, but instead he has a unique resource named Rage. He is also a very damaging warrior and has good disruptive capabilities, which make him a formidable opponent to lane against and to play against in general. Cu Chulainn is able to be played in two roles successfully: solo and jungle, which this guide will cover.

Addressing misconceptions

Cu Chulainn's passive, Berserk, has a conversion feature that converts 10% of any mana gained into health. The conversion feature of this passive is not huge so there is no point in putting heavy focus onto building items with mana. You should treat this part of Cu Chulainn's passive as a "passive bonus" instead of something that you should always think about.

Avoid building too much physical power on Cu Chulainn. His abilities have low scaling, as most warriors do, and as such you would be better off building into physical penetration items, if you want to be a damage focused warrior (which I would not recommend going for Cu Chulainn in general and especially in the solo lane), or defensive stats such as health, and protections, if you're going for a defensive build.

Builds focused on basic attacks aren't viable on him since such builds requires him to be close to his enemies, which isn't ideal when he lacks the same amount of survivability as other warriors have and the same amount of DPS as gods such as Kali and Bakasura have. Cu Chulainn only has a 10% movement speed boost, and a small leap that cannot go over most walls- while in Berserk form, he has a small health shield, and a short dash. At the end of the day, he is a warrior, not an assassin, and you should build him as such.

Build Explanation

Starting Build

Bluestone Pendant is a good starter item to pick up on Cu Chulainn. He has 4 abilities in his normal form that can proc the item's passive, and another 4 abilities in his Berserk form that can proc it too. Cu Chulainn doesn't have any cleaving or AOE basic attacks, making Death's Toll a less favorable option, but if you desire the sustain from it over the extra damage of Bluestone Pendant, you may build it.

Cu Chulainn does not have mana, instead he has Rage. Any mana gained doesn't go to waste, but instead is given as health, albeit at a low amount. Because of this, you will not want to build any Mana Potions. Multi Potions are okay since their healing will apply together with Health Potions, instead of increasing the duration of the healing, as you would with another Health Potion.
Core Build

Warrior Tabi is the optimal choice of footwear for Cu Chulainn. The extra physical power will go far since not only will it contribute to his basic attacks, and 4 abilities in his normal form, but it will also contribute to his Berserk form. Ninja Tabi isn't an inherently bad option but it doesn't fare well against Warrior Tabi. Cu Chulainn also doesn't have anything in his kit that would benefit from the attack speed or the ability to attack faster as other warriors such as Erlang Shen, and Bellona would.

Gladiator's Shield is a fantastic item on this god. Cu Chulainn essentially has 8 abilities, and will at minimum, be able to use this item's passive 8 times. Now take into account that he can hit multiple targets with his abilities, and he will be able to have insane sustain throughout fights. This item is also cheap and grants 10% CDR, which is a valuable stat on Cu Chulainn.

Cu Chulainn is a warrior primarily, and as such, you will want to counter-build and adapt to your situation. This is why I have only listed this god's core items instead of showing a "cookie cutter" build or a cut-and-dry build. Also the situational items listed are only a few of the many you can and would build- don't be afraid to experiment too.
Relics
You have differing options for relics at level 1 for Cu Chulainn, both in the solo lane and in the jungle.

Hand of the Gods is an excellent relic of choice in the solo lane, for exerting even more pressure onto your lane opponent. Early on, you will be able to steal your opponents Mana buff very easily thanks to this relic's ability to secure jungle monsters. This can be very harmful to gods that rely on the mana buff and also players who are too careless with their mana. You can also use this relic to secure your own mana buff if the enemy attempts to steal it. Late game, this relic, with the upgrade, gains a stun on the gods it is used upon, so it is not as if this relic is completely useless in the mid to late game.

Heavenly Wings is a good option if you find yourself facing gods with strong slows, such as Nemesis, Chaac, or Osiris, as not only will you speed yourself, and your team up, but also grant yourself and allies a slow immunity effect. Late game once you upgrade it, it becomes a strong tool for buffing your hunter as they will gain the Haste effect, which can be very strong in late game fights. If you didn't pick this up at level 1, you can still consider it as an option at level 12.

Horrific Emblem is a much more aggressive relic choice, and can allow you to gain early kills and pressure, since it reduces your opponent's movement and attack speed by a large amount, which can really hurt them before they have leveled their mobility tool, or if their mobility tool is on cooldown. Once upgraded, it becomes a strong relic that allows you to reduce the damage that enemy gods will deal- very handy against hunters and mages. If you did not choose this relic at level 1, you can still build it at level 12, if you desire to have it.

Magic Shell is a good option in general, as the extra health shield can make or break fights in the solo lane, as well as helping you survive ganks and early team fights. Late game, this relic especially once upgraded, will help you and your team soak up a ton of damage. Magic Shell is still a great relic choice, if you did not pick it up at level 1.

After you reach level 12, you can consider other relics.

Belt of Frenzy is a great pickup, as you can increase the total damage output of your team for a duration, and it also works on structures and objectives, making it great for sieging towers, phoenixes, and even Titans.

Cursed Ankh is fantastic for shutting down gods with a strong healing presence. Make sure to pick this up if your team, for some odd reason, does not build into any anti-healing items versus gods such as Hercules and Hel.

Phantom Veil is a great pickup for countering Odin's Ring of Spears ultimate mainly, but can also be considered if the enemy Ymir is amazing at placing down his walls. The damage mitigation is gives also makes it relevant, even if there are no walls or cages to counter for the moment.

Shield of Thorns is a fantastic counter to hunters, and other gods who rely heavily on basic attacks to deal significant damage. The upgrade to it makes it a good relic of choice versus hunter builds incorporating lifesteal now.

Tips and Tricks

Always be aware of how much Rage you have gained. You don't want to turn Berserk too early, or too late. If you have too much, use your abilities particularly Vent Anger, to reduce your Rage- you can also reduce your Rage if you cast abilities without hitting more than 1 enemy (enemies include gods, minions, and monsters). And if you have too low Rage, look for 3 enemy minions to use Barbed Spear and Salmon's Leap against, to gain rage quicker.

In solo lane(and in the jungle if you can manage to go berserk at level 2 at a good time), you have huge kill potential at level 2, since you will have enough Rage built up at this point, so that you can use both Barbed Spear and Salmon's Leap onto the minion wave, and transform into your Berserk form, granting you huge early kill potential. Even if you don't get a kill at this point, you will have the pressure advantage in lane. However don't be over-confident, you can still die if you aren't careful.

Another huge kill potential opportunity is once you hit level 5. At this level, you will have your ultimate, and if you have enough Rage built up, you will be able to dump your whole kit onto an enemy, and kill them. Do make note that you will end up losing more Rage than you gain if your abilities do not hit multiple people- keep this in mind before you jump into an enemy, use your ultimate on them, and end up not having enough Rage to go Berserk.

Spear of Mortal Pain, your ultimate, will grant you crowd control or CC immunity for 1 second, when casting this ability. This can be very helpful if you're in the middle of the enemy team and the enemy support is ready to stun you. HOWEVER, know that War Cry, your ultimate in Berserk form, does not grant you crowd control immunity.

Don't be fooled by Furious Charge, Cu Chulainn's dash in his Berserk form. It does not stun- it only knocks back enemies.

Cu Chulainn's basic attacks, similar to Awilix and Bellona when using Scourge, have longer range than most melee gods. This can be very helpful to know and can aid in trading or boxing in lane from a safer distance.

Take some time to learn where you can and cannot use Salmon's Leap from. Certain walls may be too thick for you to leap over. Knowing what walls you can and cannot leap over can help in escaping, ambushing, and ganking.

Once you go back to your normal form, Barbed Spear and Salmon's Leap will already be off of cooldown since your Berserk form lasts for 20 seconds. Keep this in mind as it can help you land a kill with the extra cast of Barbed Spear or you may be able to escape with Salmon's Leap, right after reverting to your main form.

Conclusion

Cu Chulainn is one of my favorite warriors in Smite due to his high damage potential while being very tanky and also his disruptive capabilities. I hope that this guide has helped you out with Cu Chulainn and I wish you good luck!

My biggest problem with Cu Chulainn is how to manage his rage. Would you put in a section about when to press for his rage and when to back off? Thanks.

I finally got around to updating this guide, and I'm pretty happy with the results. I'd like to thank the reddit user u/Trumpet_bear for his Cu Chulainn flair, which made me want to change the title of my guide!
