Okay, we all seem to agree that squishy supports = good thing. After all, it shakes up the meta and brings new things.
Now, what is preventing squishy supports from being in the game?
I think what's preventing them from being used is the fact that the tanks that do sport are more of a kill lane, and offer peel. The only squishy supports (IMO) are Aphrodite and Hel. Buth of which have no kill potential, except burst, and no peel. So it's a kill lane versus a sustain lane. And I think the kill lane would win because they can just dive everything and take on damage.
I don't think the problem is the kill vs whatever Hel or Aphrodite do, I think the problem is how things are stacked in favor of the kill lane.
Technically speaking, Hel is more of a mage with sustain than a support, and Aphro does have some peel in her stun.
(Also, kill lanes usually win against sustain lanes. The problem is that poke supports don't exist in Smite, which means the holy trinity of supports doesn't exist.)
