Introduction

Hello, this is Gandimeraa and this is my Mercury guide. The reason I made this guide is that I had a very hard time learning to play Mercury, and most of the guides on Smitefire only include an item and ability list and no explanation on the actual god. I hope this guide will help you skip the steps I had to take to learn to play Mercury.

Mindset while playing Mercury.

You must be aggressive

My biggest shortcoming while playing Mercury was playing passive, if you play passive you will not be able to get enough gold, fall behind, and eventually feed.

Pros / Cons

Pros

Mobile
Good re position
Passive AD from bonus move speed
Guaranteed crit from passive

Cons

Bad early game
Ult doesn't stop when it hits an enemy.
Bad ability damage
Item dependant
Squishy

Items

Why Fatalis over Golden Bow?

I pick Fatalis over Golden Bow since Mercury gets a bit of attack damage from it, he gains a massive amount of attack speed, and movement speed which will assist you in landing your special deliveries.

Why put in the shield?

It's just simple, late game there are too many other mages and assassins that will take you down, you just can't survive off pure AD. In joust I was playing Fenrir vs. He Bo I rushed magic defense before damage and i won 10/0.

Why build the jungle so tanky?

Think about it, if your jungling then there is probably already damage on your team the best way to help your team is to be the initiator, and you need health to initiate.

Actives

Take this if there is an Ares or Hades on the other team, otherwise you can get much better actives for Mercury.
Take this upgrade from HoG. This helps you gank, and you can combo it with special delivery to get a throw + stun.
Get this if your playing a Freya, Zeus, Thor, Loki, or Thanatos.
Get this if and only if you are ahead don't get it just to get it. If you fall behind with this upgrade it into support instead.

Skills

Fastest God Alive

This passive makes speed items like fatalis more viable on Mercury, while also giving you a crit when you return from base. Don't worry about saving up the bar in lane, it will give you a bonus either way and you'll probably die while trying to save it up.

MADE YOU LOOK!

This is Mercury's bread and butter skill, it gains a little base damage each rank, and a larger radius each rank. To make this skill effective you need either a golden bow rage or deathbringer for on-hit effects or late game it does absolutely nothing. This skill has a very long delay, so make sure to lead your opponents. You can combo this with special delivery to get a guaranteed hit or use it when you needed just one more basic attack.

Maximum Velocity

This is a steroid and also a escape in certain situations like vs. Artemis or Arachne. This is very good in the jungle as it increases your single target damage significantly. You can max this second or last depending on whether you need more damage or a better escape. I usually combo this with special delivery to do increased damage while they are in your range. Early game this has a pretty long cooldown so use it wisely.

Special Delivery

This ability is very good when ganking or trying to throw an enemy out of position. Although this does very little damage, I max this second because of its importance in escaping and re-positioning, but again, you can choose whether to max this second or last it depends on your playstyle. This can be combo'd with either your 1 or 2 for some significant damage.(couldn't find a picture sorry)

Sonic Boom

This is arguably Mercury's most useful ability. This ability does an outstanding amount of damage, but also disorients the enemy making them face in a random direction. One thing to worry about is that mercury doesn't stop when he hits another god, he keeps going... I have died countless times by going for a kill with Sonic Boom and running into a turret. Use this either for an execute, to save a tower, or to initiate. Try your best not to use it as an escape since its one of Mercury's strongest abilities.

Creeping / Jungling

Starting Items

As it says in my cheat sheet above jungle Mercury needs to start with a Bumba's Mask and a Hand of the Gods. If you have help try and save your hand of the gods for later, if you don't go ahead and use it.

Learn How to Jungle

Before I played Smite I played League of Legends, it seems that the Smite community has no ideas about the basics of lane prescence and ganks and stuff like that.

Lane Prescence

Don't just camp one lane and let all the other lanes get stomped by their enemies. Go in between the lanes that need help, you don't even have to get a kill you just need them to be afraid of you ganking them.

Counter Jungling

If you know that the enemy Bakasura for example is going to go to red buff, then wait for him and then just HoG the buff and steal it.

Counter Ganking

If you see the mid Posiedon going to right lane, go to right lane also. It is most likely that you will win the gank since the enemies are probably chasing your allies and over-extending.

Aggresive vs Stupid

Aggressive

Jumping in on a squishy in lane
Attacking someone who is at/above your damage
    Ganking
    Chasing

Stupid

    Tower diving
    Going in 4v1
Counter jungling (Mercury isn't a good duelist)

K JararoNatsu thanks for your input i'll try and improve my guide based on your input. I'm adding in some stuff into the abilities section, and my mindset while playing Mercury. Thanks for your input, the guide will be better off for it. Also, I'm having a little trouble on making different sections, if you could name some of the sections from your guide, that would be wonderful.

I'm glad that you said that "most" guides on here lack info. However...

This is hardly in-depth. You have little info on the build, as if you expect the players to know what you're thinking. While that would be nice, they can't...

Your abilities section basically says "This is good, it basically can do this". You give no explanation on how to use them, what the goods and bads are, and you have a picture of the passive but nothing on it etc...

Your aggressive vs. stupid section is, well, probably the only useful thing here, because you're absolutely right there.

I won't say much on the build because I try not to judge a build unless I've tested it myself.

If you want to call a guide in-depth, give some info. This guide looks like it took five minutes to make. Mine took four hours, and look at the difference. This guide is nowhere NEAR informative, so if you want to keep the name you should add a considerable amount of info.

One more thing: You'll want to check the guide more often than 3 times a week. In suggesting that you'll check it that infrequently, you are further showing the lack of effort you put into this guide.

It seems like Mercury isn't really built for grabbing kills or soloing in things like arena.
