Ares is not a peeling tank his main purpose Is just to gather up a group of enemies with your ultimate and to slow them down and stop them from using their escaping abilities. Keep this in mind when your allies are picking their gods.
Greaves are important because all tanks need greaves, even if you want to hybrid ares with damage and protections, mainly because if you build aura item you get both (due to his passive) and also you could use the early protections.
Bracer is a good early item because it's cheap and gives good health and protections along with the fact that it will give you am aura so this item will be your first damaging item due to his passive.
Sovereignty is your best protection item that gives off an aura because it gives physical and magical protections.
Witch stone helps your teammates the most and it helps to make sure you get people in your ult. This also helps you chain people because hitting your chains is the most important part of ares.
Mystical mark is good for the protections and aura.
Breastplate of valor is nice to have for the cool down reduction.
Idol of concentration is their for the cool down.
Another item that can be good is rod of ascpelicous (I can't spell it) because if you lane with someone who has a heal then you can outlast your opponents. Also it's good for the aura.
Blink is how you can get the upper hand on your enemies with your ultimate. It is also good for chasing an enemy. Combat blink is not as good as regular blink for ares. Using regular blink makes you able to ult quicker.
Hand of god is good for clearing minions since your 3 doesn't do a good job of clearing.
Enfeebling curse is good to slow your enemies and with witch stone they will not be able to escape you.
Girdle is good to have for a team fight, if you use girdle before you ult in a team fight then you will be sure to get a kill.
1- shackles- your best ability for taking down an enemy you get all 3 chains on someone and you have your partner with you they will most likely die because it slows them and silences them from using leaps,and sprints (so chaining a fenrir is the perfect way to make sure he doesn't kill your teammates)
2- bolster the defenses- a good defensive buff helps your minions when they go under the tower and can help ares if he has to take out a minion wave and keep his alive. You want to max this ability last.
3- Searing flesh- a good combo with your 1 and your only minion clearing ability but even then it's not that good at clearing waves. I use it after i have used my ultimate and after I have chained a few opponents.
4- no escape- use this to give your allies kills or if the enemies have beads use it to damage them and kill them because it is the most satisfying thing to see an enemy almost get away and then you take that hope away from them. BEADS are your worst nightmare so hit tab and if you see enemies itch out beads try and get them in your ult. Even if all of them have beads still ult for the chance you might get the a me the damage.
When picking a god try and get your partner to be someone who you can have a good ult combo with. Cupid is your best bet if they are going to go a physical adc which they probably will. And your second best partner for an adc is anhur and Artemis. If you have an Ao Kuang on your team the ult combos will wreck the enemy team, if they don't escape it. Ra is also a good person to ult near because his ult will do a lot and if they use their 3 under the place your going to land you are most likely to kill them.
