Introduction

Welcome to my guide on Hades, King of the Underworld. I've been playing Hades quite extensively, in mid and duo lane, but primarily only in the damage role. It's a popular misconception that Hades is a tank and should only be played that way, but when played correctly and built correctly as a damage mage, Hades will become one of the most powerful and useful carries on the team.

Warning/Disclaimer

Just by following the item build won't make you invincible, you still have to play smart just like any other god and know when to attack or to capitalize on enemy mistakes.

In terms of items, with the defensive items that I've listed, those are the recommended ones as they usually also result in you doing at least some more damage. They are situational and it's up to you to recognize which one you need more. Don't try to force the extra magical power from void stone if their Anhur does too much damage to you to even get close to him.

Lore

Inevitably, death sends eveyone to Hades, God of the Underworld. In the end, he always gets his way.

Eldest son of the Titans Cronus and Rhea, Hades was swallowed by his father as an infant along with five other siblings. Zeus, the youngest brother, escaped this fate and freed them once he'd grown strong enough to battle Cronus. Together, the six siblings defeated the Titans and banished them to the dark realm of Tartarus. Now the reigning Gods, Seus, Poseidon, and Hades drew lots for dominion. Hades drew the Underworld.

Of the few that have entered the Underworld and come back, all speak dismally of the place, never wishing to return. Yet Hades, himself, rarely leaves the subterranean realm, constantly seeking ways to grow the numbers of the dead.

When he desired a wife, Hades captured the radiant Persephone, daughter of the Goddess Demeter. Concealed in the Underworld, none could reach her, so Demeter cursed the land with great famine. The other Gods pleaded with her to end it lest she destroy mankind, but she would not relent until her daughter was returned. Hades finally let Persephone leave, though not before feeding her pomegranate seeds. Having consumed the fruit, she was required to return to her husband once per year to eat of the seeds again. This, it said, is a time of mourning and the cause of winter.

While many fear death and view it as evil, in truth, Hades endeavors only to keep balance. He is stern but fair. As God of the Dead and the Underworld, he views his authority on this matter absolute, forbidding anyone to leave his realm and growing wrathful when disobeyed or when someone tries to cheat death or steal from him.

For everyone, death is unavoidable and service to Hades inevitable. Even the gods.

Hades' normal staff attacks apply a debuff to the enemy, called Blight. This debuff stays on the target for 5 seconds and can be refreshed. If an enemy is affected by Blight, each of Hades' other powers have an additional effect.

How to use Hades' skills...skillfully.

Using Death from Below:
Engaging your enemy can be done in a few ways. As we know, Hades' basic staff attack will apply Blight, but so will his Death from Below ability (#1). However, if you apply Blight before initiating with Death from Below, your enemy will be slowed, this is incredibly useful for allowing your lane mate to either catch up, or if they're melee they can even get a few swings off on them, which makes it more likely to secure the kill.

I also suggest using this ability as an escape, even better if you can cast it through a wall of sorts. This ability will save your lives in more ways than one in your time playing as Hades.

Using Shroud of Darkness:
A lot of people swear this ability off, and even neglect putting a single point into it until they're forced to. I find this ability to be life saving, game changing even. I can't tell you how many times I've laned against an Anubis in Mid and have silenced his cone attack before it even did any damage to me at all. I like to initiate with Death from Below and then silence my enemy (Which will fear them too since my Death From Below will apply Blight), usually they get feared in my direction as to which I embrace them with open arms with the ultimate ability, Pillar of Agony.

Using Devour Souls:
I pour as many points into this as I can, as it is capable of basically clearing a lane by level 4ish. It also gives Hades a ridiculous amount of sustain and does some pretty amazing damage. The support offheals to your creeps and fellow Gods is more than welcome too.

Using Pillar of Agony:
I usually use this last after I initiate with Death from Below and Devour Souls. If it looks like they're just a hair too far from your radius, use Shroud of Darkness to fear them if they have blight on them (being feared makes them run slower, usually towards you), this will send them stumbling into your grasp and helplessly at your mercy. This ability can be a GAME changer in team fights, and can even net you a double, triple, quadruple or even a deicide if you're incredibly lucky.

Items

I'm hoping to make this section rather short and sweet, but still give you an understanding of why I chose the items that I chose for this build, aside from they fact that they seem to work really well.

The first item, Boots of the Magi, are a must-have. Every god should have boots, and when in doubt, it's always best to start off with boots, because just a movement speed bonus can be the difference between life and death. Also, they have the stats that we need to do damage. What's not to love.

The second item I get is usually my defense item (Either Wall of Absolution or Void Stone). I usually find myself going with Void Stone most of the time as it offers Magical Protection, but it applies a debuff to the enemy as well as buffs my Magical Power, which eliminates the need for Magical Penetration items. Wall of Absolution is my absolute favorite physical protection item as Hades. Not only does it have some of the highest physical protection in the game, it gives magical power as well. When you're midding against a physical god, they will weep while they do very little damage to you. This is also useful if you're in a lane that has high physical power damage.

The third item can be bought second if you're doing really well, the Polynomicon is a must-have for Hades. Your abilities will do enough damage to maim your opponent, but in conjunction with the auto attack buff that you gain after using an ability with Polynomicon, you can do insane amounts of damage with your auto attack. It will make people rage SO hard, watching you spend your abilities and they think that they can limp away when all you do is hit them with one basic attack and all the sudden they lose their last 348 health. Also, magical life steal is what makes the world go round and round.

Chronos' Pendant, the fourth item, gives enough magical power and MP5 to make anyone happy. THe cooldown reduction is excellent because... well... do I even have to explain why shorter cooldowns are good.

The Rod of Tahuti, or Rod of Tha Booty as I like to call it, is one of the best magical damage items in the game. And this is an excellent item to do damage with as well. The +25% bonus of Magical Power is well worth the cost.

And finally, The Book of Thoth is another high ticket item for insane magical damage. The additional mana that your stacks will accumulate is excellent as well, even though it's unlikely that you'll be mana heavy in the later levels. The 3% mana conversion to magical power on top of the +125 magical power that the book gives you is a no brainer.

It might seem silly to put a stack item as the last item, but I find that the amount of gold that's required to get for the Book of Thoth early on may gimp your stats if you go for it right away. It's entirely up to you, I have no place telling you how you play best with Hades. This is simply the way that works for me best and the stacks accumulate quickly towards the end anyways.

Creeping / Jungling

Creeping and jungling might be a bit slow at first because even after you use your #1 and your #3, the actual buff creep will still be alive and it will take some auto attacking. After getting rank 3 Polynomicon, it'll go much quicker. Once you're a higher level with more items you'll generally clear a neutral creep camp in one devour souls after a #1.

Only creep or jungle if you're ahead and your lane is pushed comfortably. Cooldowns or speed is recommended. Mana if you're having mana issues early game.

Other than that, it's really situational.

Team Work

Just as a rule of thumb for whatever god you play, always communicate with your team. Communication is key. Always. Familiarize yourself with the emote commands, they're pretty basic and they can save you time without typing, and it broadcasts to your entire team. Some players don't watch the chat much, but they'll hear that narrator let them know what's going on.

Unless you know for sure that you can get the kill in your lane without your lanemates help, don't do it without letting them know that you're ready to attack.

Hades is AoE friendly in the sense that if there is an enemy nearby, they'll all take the same amount of damage, making you an absolute powerhouse in teamfights, especially finishing everyone off with your ultimate.

Pros / Cons

+ High sustain
+ High damage if built correctly
+ Versatile #1 ability (initiates/escapes)
+ Can clear lanes quickly at around level 4 and above
+ Can heal self and allies
+ Silence/Interrupt
+ AoE oriented and still high damage

- Escapes won't help when crippled
- Can be mana hungry early game if you're really aggressive consistently
- Won't be a tank

Summary

All in all, lots of people underestimate the power of damage Hades. His amazing sustain and damage can keep him in a lane and really start to stack up the kills. Every item in this build has been tested and used to ensure that Hades will be doing as much damage as possible while still having the ability to take a hit (but not too many!)

I have no idea what else to write in the summary.
