Split Tunneling on iPhone VPN

I started looking more closely at VPN settings on my iPhone because I do not always want every app to behave in exactly the same way when the VPN is active. Sometimes I would rather have more control instead of simply turning the whole connection on or off. While checking iOS VPN options, I came across https://toggle.org/vpn-for-ios and noticed that split tunneling is listed among the features. That caught my attention because I had seen the term before but never really understood why someone would want this option on a phone. Is it useful for ordinary everyday browsing?
