You will want to start with WAR FLAG so that you can survive longer in the lane.
After that you should work towards the SHOES OF FOCUS so you can get that *10% Cooldown Reduction.
The next staple is going to be grabbing the GAUNTLET OF THEBES for the immediate Health and HPS. Once this item is evolved we get +50 Magical/Physical Protections and start building our Aura Stack.
Ares passive thrives on Auras. Each completed Aura item that Ares owns will grant him +30 Magical Power, so we want to build those next.

Blink Rune
This final build is w/ Boots. If you want to replace them, it is easy to do with another Aura Item that will better suit your match.
Here you will have Maxed out the following:
Cooldown
MPS
CC Reduction
Your Physical & Magical Protections are both 240+
Your Health is at 3185
Your HPS is at 71
You have 5 stacks of Auras, each giving you +30 Power
Your Power is at 290

Our next items are really dealers choice and depend on who you are facing, but this is what I usually run with more or less.
SHOGUN'S KUSARI will give us MORE COOLDOWN as well as give us another Aura that helps our Carry, as well as other teammates, by boosting their attack speed by +25%.
SOVEREIGNTY gives us another Aura that helps us keep our team alive longer by providing them +15 Physical Protections and +35 HPS.

Your last items are really able to be tailored to your play style as well as who you're up against, but here are more of what I'd suggest:
Pestilence
Contagion
Mystical Mail
Void Stone
Heartward Amulet
Tyrannical Plate Helm
Emperor's Armor
