Gods of Fear & Terror

Cultivate dread in your victims. Torment their mind until tension escalates, and terror is unleashed.


The divine union between the god of war and the goddess of love birthed twin gods- Deimos and Phobos, fear and terror incarnate.

The twin brothers, Deimos and Phobos loyally serve their father, riding by his side to battle. Following the death of Zeus, Deimos and Phobos served as enforcers for the god of war. The two had previously exerted their might exclusively to the battlefield of mortals but emerging conflicts between the gods has given them a newfound desire to instill fear and terror to anyone in their path.


Deimos & Phobos are stance-switching assassins that stalk enemies, patiently instilling dread into enemies up until the perfect time to unleash terror.


I have prepared a god design summary section at the very bottom of this page. I recommend it if you are in a hurry or as a reference when reading the concept in full.

Passive Ability

Fear Incarnate / Terror Incarnate

FEAR INCARNATE



After leaving the fountain, Deimos becomes invisible indefinitely. Deimos can break out of invisibility whenever he performs an attack or receives damage. If Deimos breaks invisibility by striking first, enemy gods around him are feared away. Deimos regains invisibility when he is no longer in combat.


If Deimos kills an enemy god, he instantly becomes invisible again, becomes untargetable, and cannot be revealed.


Fear duration: 1.5 seconds


Fear radius: 35 units


Untargetable duration: 1.5 seconds



TERROR INCARNATE



Passively, Phobos drains and consumes stacks of Dread from nearby gods. His next attacks deals bonus physical damage based on an enemy's missing health, per stack of Dread consumed. Additionally, Phobos gains increased movement speed in an area around gods afflicted by Dread.


Missing health damage: 3% missing health as physical damage per stack


Dread radius: 35 units


Dread drain rate: 1 stack per second


Movement speed: 15%

Primary Abilities

Hallucinate

Deimos creates a dormant Hallucination in an area. Deimos may recast this ability at the same location to manually activate the Hallucination. Casting Hallucinate does not break invisibility. Enemy gods cannot see where Hallucinations are placed nor when they are being cast. Dormant Hallucinations will build up Dread to an enemy gods in their line of sight, if Looming Dread is toggled.


Active Hallucinations are presented as Deimos breaking invisibility and performing a basic attack.


Upon manually breaking invisibility, Deimos causes each dormant Hallucination to present the same action, fearing enemies near them.


Cast range: 55 units


Dormant Hallucination limit: 8 hallucinations deployed at a time


Fear duration: 1.5 seconds


Cooldown: 0 seconds


Cost: 0 mana

Horrific Presence

While invisible, Deimos gains significantly increased movement speed and emits a global audio cue that can be heard at high intensity regardless of distance.


Movement speed: 75% for 5 seconds


Cooldown: 30 seconds

Deimos channels an attack that increases in distance the longer it is channeled. While channeling this ability, wailing and screams are emitted at Deimos' location. Channeling this ability does not break stealth. Upon releasing this ability, Deimos dashes forward and attacks all enemies in his path.


Damage: 100/170/240/310/380 (+90% of your physical power)


Minimum distance: 35 units


Maximum distance: 60 units


Cooldown: 18 seconds


Cost: 50/55/60/65/70 mana

Delirium

"Your mind DECIEVES YOU!"




Phobos selects an area in front of him to teleport to. Phobos may target dormant Hallucinations from a longer range and teleport to their location. Teleporting to dormant Hallucinations causes them to fear all enemies near Phobos, consuming the Hallucination in the process.


Range: 30 units / 60 units


Fear duration: 1.5 seconds


Cooldown: 18 seconds


Cost: 70 mana

Ravage

"RAVAGE THEM!"




Phobos performs a devastating cleave in a cone in front of him that damages enemies and creates a lightning charge on enemies struck. After a one second delay, the lightning charge will seek nearby enemy gods afflicted with Dread and consuming the stacks of Dread, damaging enemy gods for the same damage. This ability's cooldown is fully reset each time this ability consumes stacks of Dread.


Damage: 85/135/185/235/285 (+80% of your physical power)


Cleave range: 35 units


Lightning range: 55 units


Cooldown: 14 seconds

SUPPRESS

Phobos channels an attack that increases in distance the longer it is channeled. Upon releasing this ability, Phobos dashes forward, damaging and stunning the first enemy god in his path. The stun duration is based on the channel duration of this ability.


Damage: 120/190/260/330/400 (+110% of your physical power)


Minimum distance: 35 units


Maximum distance: 60 units


Minimum stun duration: 0.5 seconds


Maximum stun duration: 1.75 seconds


Cooldown: 16 seconds

Looming Dread

Looming Dread is available at level 0.


TOGGLE: While invisible, Deimos stalks all enemy gods in his line of sight, inflicting them with Dread gradually.


At maximum stacks of Dread, the afflicted god has their vision reduced, cannot see information from allied gods, and become Deafened. Afterwards, afflicted gods lose all stacks of Dread accumulated and cannot gain anymore for a brief duration.


Dread buildup rate: 1 stack every second, up to a maximum of 20 stacks


Dread impairment duration: 15 seconds


Dread immunity duration: 5 seconds

I hope that you enjoyed my god concept for the SMITEFire Halloween 2023 God Creation Contest!


My personal interpretation of Deimos and Phobos are that of a pair of twins that work in tandem, during battle. Fear and dread are the feelings that are accumulated while terror is the culmination of those feelings finally being released. Because of this, my interpretation of these twin gods required Deimos to "go first" in terms of interacting with gods. You have to build up the fear in enemies before striking after all. Therefore, Phobos is the follow-up to all of that fear and dread that has been building, leading to a devastating release of power. Admittedly, these two gods have very little veritable sources to draw from. What is agreed upon is that these two are the sons of Ares and Aphrodite. Information that is inconsistent is in regards to what domain Deimos and Phobos preside over. They are both attributed to being gods of fear, particularly fear during battle but some sources simply attribute them to solely "gods of fear" while other sources are more specific and cite Deimos as representative of dread & Phobos is strongly associated with terror; this is even his name in his Roman equivalent.


Deimos and Phobos concepts have been done before by different community members across different platforms but they way they go about implementing the two gods, wasn't satisfying for me. I think partly that is due to the challenge of implementing a stance-changing assassin but a lot of designs felt like they weren't using the full potential of these two gods.


One strong influence for my god concept is another video-game, Dead by Daylight. Specifically, the killers known as The Ghost Face and The Wraith. I love this game a ton and have put too much hours into it, and when exploring Halloween god concepts, I of course had to draw from this video-game as well as other horror influences. I particularly wanted to implement a "stalking" mechanic into a MOBA but the problem was that Dead by Daylight is very different from SMITE. In SMITE, you can't really afford to have a "stalking" mechanic unless the payoff is appropriately huge, due to the fast paced nature. All things considered, I am happy with the design I landed on.


The premise of my Deimos & Phobos concept is that you play as an assassin with very high map traversal without revealing your position until you decide to finally make a move. However, your damage is very dependent on the Dread you accumulate on enemies which rewards prior preparation and punishes recklessness. Deimos & Phobos double-down on the idea of the assassin as this patient malicious force that makes enemies uneasy whenever their location isn't known. These two are weaker in direct combat and any gods that can exert dominance over them directly will have an easy time denying Deimos & Phobos from becoming a threat too soon.

God design summary

This section is meant to be a quick break-down of my god design, to help better understand it or if you are reading this very quickly.



The passive allows Deimos to be invisible unless he breaks it manually or takes damage. It can be regained when no longer in combat. When Deimos breaks his invisibility manually, he will fear all enemy gods near him.


For Phobos, this passive drains stacks of Dread and these stacks empower his next attack with %missing HP damage.


The first ability lets Deimos place dormant hallucinations which appear like clones, but can't be seen by enemies. He can recast this ability at the same location as a dormant hallucination to activate it, causing it to imitate Deimos as if he broke invisibility.


This first ability lets Phobos teleport a short distance like Ao Kuang, but this ability can target dormant hallucinations from a longer range. Upon telporting to the hallucination, they will be activated and fear enemies near Phobos.


The second ability is a massive movement speed boost to Deimos BUT it makes a massive global audio cue.


For Phobos, this ability is just a cone attack in front of him, with a lighting effect added on that bounces from the initial targets hit. The lightning spreads to enemies with Dread, and its cooldown resets each time it does.


The third ability for Deimos is a channeled dash attack that makes noise and does not break his invisibility during the channel. The distance of the ability scales with how long it is channeled.


For Phobos, the third ability is a channeled dash attack that damages and stuns the first enemy it strikes. The stun duration and the distance of this ability scales up with how long it is channeled.


The ultimate functions as a toggle whenever Deimos is invisible, that lets him stalk enemy gods in his line of sight and cause them to accumulate stacks of Dread. Toggling this function also works on the dormant hallucinations, causing them to build Dread for any gods in line of sight.


However, if Deimos is visible, this ultimate changes to a standard stance switch ability that lets him swap places with Phobos and vice versa.
